The big difference between CACC and BJJ is unity. The CACC family has folkstyle/collegiate, freestyle, luta livre (the original "nogi"), shoot, etc., they just need to come together.
To an extent but even in BJJ you have sport vs self-defense vs 10th planet etc. Its not like we are all one big happy family over here either.
They could also just win ADCC events. But they don't because "CACC" is a fake sport for LARPers who want to play pretend
Dan Gable talked about how American Scholastic Wrestling was called Catch Wrestling in Iowa when he was a kid.

I like this. This is how I play jiujitsu. Our gym is owned by black belts who are wrestlers.
Yes, there are Gracie black belts that are pirating holds that Catch Wrestling was known for, but the Gracie's have to put their names on everything so they act like they invented it.
and those things you call "catch wrestling holds" are really pirated from japan. Japanese was doing this shit way longer than the existence of any catch wrestling. point is... who gives a fuck, go train.
Really they weren’t, explain to me how working class men, mainly miners from Wigan in the 1800s nipped over to Japan and attended a few ju-jitsu classes and stole their techniques? 6:39 Or did they secretly have the internet then?
@@BH-gh6qm nothing is pirated from Japan wrestling in all its forms predate any Japanese arts. Wrestling is thousands of years old as well as the submissions.

Barnett seems like a great ambassador for the art via both his combat resume and his spoken word. Always enjoyed watching him fight because to me he seemed like one of the most well rounded big men in the game.
I can't believe I even know this is out there but I came across cacc being a fan of mma. As someone who has never trained in a combat sport this one seems highly effective and almost entirely overlooked. Are there cacc gyms out there or where would someone go to learn/train?

In ancient Greece there were two kind of wresting styles. The Olympic one that was about takedowns. The second one that wasn't in the Olympics, the boring one, was about submission or pinning! This was 3000 years ago....

bjj has a leg up in marketing because it works exactly like a successful MLM business. the closest catch gym to me was three hours away and closed two years ago. if catch wants to grow, it has to have the ability to get people in the door.
there are five bjj gyms within 30 minutes of me.
Most adults don't want to wrestle because wrestling is hard.

Didn't mean for such a long comment. I guess I miss wrestling more than I realized.
I'd love to see a large scale, lasting CACC revival. I wrestled in my youth, but since I graduated high school way back in 1990, (no, the school bus was not a brontosaurus) it was still a few more years before even Brazilian pajama fighting was a thing in the US, so my grappling days came to a sad end. I got into boxing in the military, paid for the lessons by teaching the coach (another soldier) wrestling.
By the time I was somewhere i could at least do the jammie jam there was only one school, and I got kicked out for wrestling the first time I rolled with someone.
A second school opened a few years ago, but they're focused on the young guys that think they're going to get into the UFC.
I'd love to find a CACC gym, and show people what "combat" grappling really is.

Pinning is not exclusive to wrestling either. Any good grappling art worth its salt has pins. Judo and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as well. The problem is this aspect has been completely left out of judo now and BJJ for sport is right on its heels. The guys who taught Jiu-Jitsu and judo 50-60 years ago knew what they were doing and it was perfectly fine before all the "sport evolution" fucked it up.
pinning has not been left out of judo at all, it still is the main form of ne-waza winning. it actually has evolved from the classic pins to techniques that combine pinning and strangling. you see it a lot in the female division, they always go for a sankaku gatame and then pin.

Love this dude BUT: I let in maybe about 4-12 people in my online hema grappling group a day and they must answer group questions to get it and I ask what’s your fav. Grappling style. Even though Jiujitsu is #1 answer, CaCC is a very close second. Winning competitions is important but most grappling tournaments rules are favored toward bjj. MMA/Shooto has already proved that CACC is the better option. & last I believe education is even more important than competitions we NEED MORE SCHOOLS and we need to call out the BS bjj does in constantly renaming submissions from other arts. ADCC is not bjj it’s submission grappling it’s a combination of ALL grappling styles.

The unfortunate reality is that ADCC and other "nogi" (what a BS term) comps are slanted toward sport JJ rules. ADCC didn't have slamming til recently, and half or more of ADCC and IBJJ matches start with a sit to guard/buttscoot. All of Gordon Ryan's ADCC 2022 matches did. And he's the "GOAT"? What a joke.

Well there are a lot of ADCC opens and trails now. That rule set should theoretically play well to catch wrestling.
Let's see some catch guys go win tournaments. I don't care either way. The big issue for you guys is that bjj dudes are evolving faster than you can even dream of catching up.

Same here for Belgium...I like the no-nonsense approach of Catch Wrestling. Unfortunately I think for the time being you being in Vietnam and me being in Belgium we have to rely on YT videos or buy the instructional videos. I bought Tony Cecchine lost art of hooking a month ago and it got me even more interested in CW. Stay safe brother😉💪🏻

@@haddenindustries2922 there is alot of free folkstyle seminars and clinics on youtube and free jiu jitsu seminars and clinics from guys that are very wrestling influenced. Jiu Jitsu guys like Priit Mihkelson and Chris Paines.
Barnett has said in other interviews that if no catch wrestling is available near you, take whatever grappling is available and practice catch wrestling techniques from videos when you have the chance.

I wanted to do Catch. Not a single gym in my country.
So I went to the MMA gym and started 2x per week Cage Wrestling and 1x per week NoGi BJJ.
I got instructionals by Billy Robinson and Josh Barnett and I try to incorporate as much Catch in my game as I can.
This will do for now.
How many times I've heard "we no wrestling, we joojistoo" and then they slap a nasty face crank on me. I don't think Gracie was teaching that, mate.
No idea where adults learn catch wrestling.
Now I am traveling from Mexico to Argentina so I am really out of luck….
If you are in southern California, there Catch Wrestling Alliance in LA and then there is Erik Paulson teaches his Combat Submission Wrestling which is his own version of CACC. It just has other influences such as Judo, Sambo, Bohk, Dumog and of course, CACC. Snakepit USA has a large presence on the East Coast and Middle America to some extent. There is also Old School Grappling and they are based in Arizona. This is all assuming your based in the United States. If not, well you can always look at the aforementioned organizations affiliates and what countries they are located. Hope this helps. Lets keep CACC alive.

There are schools around in the USA. Just, a lot of them are not that good.

@@kommisar. Seems like the original poster asking about Catch Wrestling schools and where they can be found. Why would it be relevant to in mention Erik Paulson’s BJJ belt when that’s not the subject of discussion? It’s true, he is known for his affiliation with the Machados. And the Machados are well known to be affiliated with Catch Wrestling organizations such as Snakepit USA, not to mention Paulson. But that’s a different discussion. Why is Paulson’s BJJ black belt relevant to the original post again? So what it he knows both, that’s even better, right?

Sadly Catch will never be as popular as BJJ because of the wrestler super competitive attitude that is not great for beginners.
You can look at how many kids do HS wrestling and catch is even more aggressive, which I love but it's not for everyone.
MMA schools are where Catch can really thrive because of the wrestlers that come into MMA are more comfortable with idea in Catch than BJJ (the guard).
Unfortunately, BJJ gym etiquette gets in the way of progress.
@@renehinojosa1962 How does it hinder progress to keep your training partner healthy and uninjured? The drop-off rate for martial arts in general is already high enough. You're not going to improve that by letting your average martial arts practitioner get injured through stupid shit.
Well that's pretty funny considering how popular college and Olympic style wrestling is popular in the academic scene, but it's not as popular as BJJ outside schools because BJJ is catered to your average person's needs and desires. Many people still want to learn martial arts to learn how to defend themselves in a fight, not become a great athletic competitor. Trying to show soccer moms how to shoot a duck under is not nearly as appealing or practical as showing them how to stop a guy from strangling you.
@@kommisar. If. BJJ school is catering to soccer moms they are not teaching anything that will save you in a self defense situation either. Self defense is more of an attitude than a set of techniques and most people don't get that. Hell you can find woman saying they can protect themselves because they take cardio kickboxing
@@SwordFighterPKN If it's more of an attitude then how does that in any way invalidate them trying to cater to regular people like soccer moms as opposed to athletic, competitive people who probably already have that attitude? That doesn't make any sense, and, no, it's a mix of both attitude and technique.
No idea what the cardio kickboxing comment pertains to. The bottom line is BJJ schools are more successful because they provide viable self-defense programs for regular, everyday people, whereas these catch schools are geared for those wanting to learn how to win a competition match. They are not the same. Again, try teaching a soccer mom a duck under as opposed to how to avoid getting strangled by a large man and see how well that goes. See which one she is more interested in learning.
Couldn't have said it better: Catch is not submission oriented. It's top domination and control oriented, where submissions just play a part.
That isn't even true at all.
He does not know what he is talking about half the time. Old freestyle came from catch ad cstcb can. All the riding, nelsons, etc that he said was done by old freestyle wrestlers and is still done today. Unfortunatly the rules in modern freestyle has changed drastically.
Folkstyle wrestling IS cacc regardless with or without the subs. And I 100% agree that in MORDEN freestyle, they get stood up way to quick unlike OLD freestyle.

Feels like this rant is going to discourage people from doing catch rather than encourage them. Maybe that is why its smaller than bjj?
That's kind of the point... catch wrestling is for truly bad ass motherfuckers. Not "jiu jitueros" that want to "play". The entire art of catch is to dismantle WHATEVER YOU CATCH. CATCH AS CATCH CAN. Whatever position I'm in, If I can break a bone or tear a ligament, I'm gonna fuckin do that. Erik Paulson said in one of his videos, "Even in jiu jitsu gyms, you start wristlocking or cross facing the normal guys... most people are gonna tap." Catch is for people who wish to learn supreme violence in the art of body dismemberment.

Catch Can wrestling's roots are Lancashire wrestling and elbow and collar wrestling. It does have roots in folkstyle, but it is distinct from folkstyle. It is not simply folkstyle with submissions. You can't make up your own Catch Can style. I respectfully disagree with Barnett on this.
What I've always hated is bjj has not traditionalism they steal from EVERY GRAPPLING ART and call it jujitsu. When tjj exist
Do you actually think every style of martial art has to look completely different from one another and start from scratch? Get real. Even the Gracies have openly stated since day one now that their art was based completely on what they were taught by Maeda, whom they openly acknowledge was a judo practitioner. They simply said they refined his teachings into a different style of their own. They never claimed to have invented any particular technique. Your comment is like saying kickboxing is just ripped off from muay thai. Understand how martial arts styles develop. Even catch was not this completely original martial art that was made from scratch.
I guess josh didnt read the history that catch as catch can was in 2 olympic games then they renamed it to freestyle wrestling

Freestyle has changed a ton since then though, to the point where there isn’t much ground work. Folkstyle is much closer to CACC, and it also comes from Catch.
Freestyle changed so much unfortunately, while folkstyle does actually resemble CaCC more. When Dan Gable was a kid, scholastic wrestling (folkstyle) was still called CaCC in his region of the United States.
