Actually love how much Josh acknowledges Bernardo's grappling skill. It's a point that tends to get lost with a lot of the other instructionals on this channel.
@@Theo-dj7vs You're misreading the comment. Because Bernardo is both humble and curious, especially as an uke, many people watching the videos don't realise that he's a 4x world champion.
I really don't know the Bernardo' or how good he is but I am a fan of Josh Barnett since I am a big pro wrestling fan, but when Josh acknowledged his skill it made me laugh cause that was nice respect right there. So now I know he must be great
What an excellent teacher. I have watched Josh’s fights / grappling matches for years but never realized what a great teacher he is. Very articulate and explains the details incredibly well.
Yes, but there is a detail that he missed, the last step to pass the guard is a hook that he did not put and you do not release that hook until you pass the guard. Well it is a white belt who does this technique there and I understand.
Everything is painful while rolling with a fooking elephant like Barnett. He would be one hell of a coach, he is so damn well spoken and he teaches almost in a didactic pace, im blown away actually
Check out his podcasts with Joe Rogan and Lex Fridman if you havent already! Very smart philosophical thinking guy. Not what I expected from a mma heavyweight veteran but hes great to listen to
That's what makes him exceptionally geared for Catch wrestling specifically because of the emphasis on maximum top heavy pressure, smothering your opponent the entire time you're working, and making them as uncomfortable as humanly possible while making them suffer. If all done correctly, this will keep your opponent distracted and will kill their stamina and endurance much faster than usual
I love this hold. Its a technique shown to novice Judoka (Juji gateme) and I have long adjusted it to place the most pressure possible just like Josh is showing here. Its a hold where you have lots of other options to choose from. I love it :)
What the hell. I literally just got held in this position for 5 minutes, just to come home after and see theres a bjj fanatics video on it the same day.
The white belt version of this is my go to at the moment. Always had trouble trapping the arm and keeping the thumb pointing up, going to drill this method now :)
Great video like always! During grappling, make your body go limp (while fighting back) and you'll see it makes subs hard to get if not impossible. This is the key to fighting in real life and not with rules.
When I started training in Catch under Hartsell, back in 1992 or so, he emphasized pain, pressure, crushing in every position/transition you found yourself putting your opponent in. I don't see a lot of that in many Catch players these days. What I do see is Catch guys moving/transitioning like BJJ guys and submitting like Catch guys. What should be happening is the Catch guy should be moving/transitioning like a Catch guy and finishing like a Catch guy. There is a world of difference when that method is done in Catch. The difference between the two approaches can be heard very audibly if done right. That being said I love all grappling arts!
This just got me thinking. If you could have an individual fighters skill for every and any position or technique, what would it be. Eg. Barnett's scarfhold pressure and so on...
john danaher shows great details in his dynamic pinning instructional... basically most important detail i can relay is its about keeping control of the near arm. If you let their nearside arm retract, get the elbow to the matt, you lose it... thats when they can get out towards your back.
Tony Cecchine got sick of society and locked himself in his house. The guy never made another DVD or seminars whatsoever i follow his channel to this day. He just drops some serious educated truth bombs about American society. He's always great to listen to.
last night when I was rolling in bjj class, I had my training partner pinned with kesa gatame but the coach (Brown belt) kept telling me to abandon that position and advance to mount because my back is compromised. Im a judoka and new to BJJ, can anyone explain to me why that was a risk? I had my training partner pinned and I had side control. So I really didnt see a risk and just want to understand what I'm not seeing.
There is nothing wrong with Kesa Gatame. You were probably there too long and weren't really doing anything. Way before you go to mount you want to transition to side control and place all your weight and pressure as you go for a finish. Then and only then do you go for mount before using knee on belly first. By switching straight to mount you are missing out on about 25 submissions and tiring your opponent.
@Water Gun I actually ended up joining a different gym. its much more clear in my new gym bc my training partners are much better at defending by protecting their elbows so I cant sink into the position and tire them out or they give it up for a better position into a back take or arm bar.
I hate watching people get arm barred constantly in demonstration. Like, I get it. You don't have to keep hurting the elbow 🤕 From, A guy with elbow pain
You still need to use what you've got when you're smaller. I'm a middle weight but when I spar with heavy weights I try to make them carry my weight as much as possible to tire them out. Works for me.
@@shakazulu6512 I would love to see it brother, I roll with 250 plus and they are muscle and me being around 150 is no good trying to use my weight to hold them down! I need technique to hold them down not just muscle and weight but pure technique.

Josh is a great teacher. You two are able to clearly and concisely explain this in an easily digestible way.
I second that. I'm very impressed with how this is put together. Josh speaks and explains very well.

Kesa Gatame: Josh Barnett vs Dean Lister. Classic.

Barnett oozing that Catch wrestling knowledge. Great stuff. Keep it coming!
Went to a Josh Barnett seminar at CMMA and it was the best experience ever! His seminar was enjoyable af!
Love big Josh and the Scarf Hold is my favorite. Excellent details brother, thanks for sharing !
