Not a sleeper. That was a super popular hit that was all over the radio back in that day.
Fun Fact, saw him perform here in the A in Feb. 2020 with my then 29 year old daughter. Sitting in a room amongst other fans yet vibing off his music live with my daughter was like otherworldly. I’m a music head of epic proportions! She has heard him her whole life! We were singing and having so much fun not knowing the world was going on hiatus in March of that year!
There's a 12-in long version of this my homegirl played it a few weeks ago but this is one of her favorite songs by him her grandma used to play it I guess for parties
dude... dude! 😀 the significance of this record can't be overstated. it's been sampled to death and is probably roy's biggest dancefloor release. it still blows up dancefloors. especially amongst house music heads.
This and Lonnie Liston Smith’s Expansions were MAJOR floor rushers
At New York City’s Paradise Garage dance club (1977-1987)
And by Floor Rushers I mean folks would almost literally break their necks rushing to the dance floor to put in hardcore WORK dancing to this Classic tune
The legendary Garage had a roof deck where there could be 50/60 people up there taking a break from putting in serious work dancing
( the club opened at midnight closed at 10am the next morning )
And when the first notes of Running away or Expansions cane threw the roof deck speakers no lie every single one would fly down the stairs to get some of those jams
Even though the deck was big enough for everybody to put in work up there
But legendary Dj Larry Levan was so respected that folks wanted put their work in-front of him
Let him known the circle of art was complete
Meaning the art of the musicians who created the track, Mr. Artistry as a Dj and the creativity of the 200 plus people dancing freestyle to the tunes he spun
In a symbiotic relationship all three’s creativity Musician, Dj and Dancer!!!
I meant to say Mr Levan’s Artistry as a DJ and the Dancers creativity dancing to the tune

To let him ( Dj Larry Levan ) know the circle was complete

the bass line is bumping... i saw Roy in Mansfield PA in 1978 and he put on a great show. after the show i met him and he was high ass a kite. he was buying some food in town for the tour bus. the munchies had set in for all of us.. good times lol

I have loved that song forever and never knew the Ramp sample until a few years ago.The song is called Daylight.. check it out too! You can also hear parts of Searching from Roy Ayers... My Life by Mary J. Blige too. It will blow you away!
Had this album back in the day. Roy Ayers was definitely underrated.

This song just grabs your emotions with the despair and longing in the lyrics and just takes you on a trip with the music. "Gotta find a lover" does the same thing, just quite a bit more sensual.
Roy Ayers was so underrated. He and a handful of other artists, successfully built the bridge to connect RnB with Jazz at the hip. Sam him in concert with Lonnie Liston Smith and Tom “Funkin for Jamaica “ Brown. They great artist. This is a great cruising in your car song.
