I loved this actress all my life her beauty and charisma and presence is always mesmerizing, but this role was something special she was perfection in it!
This show was awesome! Carla Gugino deserves an Emmy nod. Like Bly Manner this is a compilation of 10 of Edgars stories with each episode being titled each if his stories. It's not just the short story of TFOTHOU.
I’m so happy that you guys are watching this. I’m both a huge Poe fan and adore the Flanaverse. Carla Gugino is spectacular in this series, but then again, I don’t think there;s a bad performance to be found here. The series wonderfully incorporates Poe’s poetry and quotes. I love watching your reactions to this. Let the adventure begin! ❤❤❤
the book geek in me is always happy to see folks reacting to this gem based on Poe's work. Edgar Allan Poe didn't kill himself. He was found nearly unconscious and then died soon after at a medical center. You don't need to be familiar with Poe's work to enjoy this series but it's so much better if you know the stories.
I'm not super familiar with his work, but I'm surface-familiar enough to have picked up on a lot of the little details that nod to the stories and loved it for that much.
True! Some of the character and place names in TFOTHOU are "winks" to Poe's prose and poetry. It's fascinating how Flanagan takes existing classic thriller literature (aside from Midnight Mass, Midnight Club, etc) and tweaks it for a modern-day tale, still keeping things macabre and gruesome. This series was engaging, and just ghastly enough for my taste (I hate when a show leans on gore far too much and neglects characters and plot); I won't say any more so as not to spoil things for any noobs, LOL.
So happy you are watching this. You don't have to know Poe to understand what is going on but if you do know Poe, there are wonderful Easter eggs throughout the series. I hope you enjoy Mike Flanagan's most recent masterpiece.
As a mild Poe fan I really enjoyed all the nods to his work that I caught (I'm sure there's so many more 😅). "I feel like we know the ending..." If you know Poe, the episode titles tell you how every death arrives, which is part spoiler and part anticipatory fun. But the joy is in the journey, even when you know the destination 💀
Right? Like Dan & Sam's little joke early in this video of "oh we know the ending, show over" is such a great thing about this show. Kinda like the old Columbo episodes, where we know what happens at the end, but the joy is absolutely in seeing the execution of the journey there.
@@DavidGowers Yes--- Columbo was not a whodunit, more of a how-did-it. Good series, each episode is basically a movie unto itself. I loved the episodes that featured guest stars Donald Pleasance, Ruth Gordon, Martin Landau, Leonard Nimoy.
Mike Flanagan is genuinely a horror god. A true genius. I haven't seen Midnight Mass, although I'm starting to think I really should. Doctor Sleep? Not only a fantastic film, but through the brilliance of his filmmaking alone it healed a 40+ year old wound in the world of horror cinema. Haunting of Hill House was brilliant, and while I think I still like that better, House of Usher is...poetry. So fitting, given that it explores a lot of poems from Poe. This was the last thing Flanagan had to do in his contract with Netflix. What a phenomenal note to go out on. I don't think I've been so excited for videos from you two since Cobra Kai.
I'm so excited to dive into this one together! I can't wait to see you guys enjoy it. Your reactions are always such a great breath of fresh air with your commentary, and your appreciation of the little details. Love to you both and extra kudos for the work you put into these videos as new parents! Must be a very busy time with your little one. ♥
Current (older) Madeline is my favorite actress ever. I'm so hoping Flanagan adds her to his stable of actors. I actually got a tattoo of her character very recently and was able to show Mary (McDonnell, the actress) at a comic convention last weekend. She took a picture of it to send to Mike Flanagan - made my day/week/year!
Perry is the youngest Usher. His full name is Prospero Usher, Perry for short. I'm so excited to go on this journey with you both; this is my favorite Flanagan series, slightly above Midnight Mass. as a Poe nerd, it hit all the right buttons for me. enjoy the ride! 😃
"There's a Ouija board by their bed" Probably a little Easter egg from Flanagan's "Ouija: Origins". I know the mirror from "Oculus" makes it's own odd little appearances throughout Flanagan's work, it's in Gerald's Game and The Haunting of Hill House.
Hey guys! I'm glad u r watching this limited series. I know it was hard for u to notice because of how dark it was, but the mom really was behind DA C. Auguste Dupin. Dupin was an interesting character that appeared in a couple of Poe's works, a French Sherlock Holmes. I am going to give u the full names & nicknames for Roderick Usher's children from eldest to youngest: Frederick "Freddy", Tamerlane "Tammy", Victorine "Vic", Napoleon "Leo", Camille & Prospero "Perry". The actress that portrays Juno & the 1 that plays Prospero r from the Mike Flanagan series u haven't seen yet, THE MIDNIGHT CLUB. The actress who portrays Roderick's granddaughter is from Flanagan's movie DR. SLEEP. I think Carla Gugino is amazing in this series. In an interview I saw, Carla describe her character to be more like Karma/Fate rather than a devil. I've heard her character described by other reactors as a Crossroads Demon/a Djinn. U know the saying "Careful what u wish for." I have read some of Poe's works, & re-read the ones pertaining to this series since I have a book w/collections of his writing. Anyway, I really enjoyed this series & hope u equally enjoy it.😊👍
Thank you guys so much! I have seen this on Netflix and kept going past it! I’m like Samantha now, I could binge watch this right now. But I rather watch it with you guys!😊
Love you guys and love that y'all are watching this finally. Saw it at Xmas and had a blast. As a fan of Poe and flanaverse I was very pleased. And it got me watching Narcos " bloody brilliant" lol thanks
I am so excited to watch your reactions to this series! As a lover of Poe since I was 10, I thought they did an awesome job bringing his stories to life for this era. I would also like to mention if you enjoy Juno, she is a main character in Midnight Club and a wonderful actress. If you haven't seen the movie Hush, it is a Flannagan movie that I read was made to bring his wife into mainstream which, in my opinion, worked wonderfully! Love you guys and kisses to the little one 💜💜💜
This and Midnight Mass are my favorite Flanagan series. I'm so excited you two are watching this! I have a hard time keeping track of character names, too. Using the subtitles helps me.
So excited to see you guys doing this outside of spooky season. I'm not exactly a horror fan, but I like Edgar Allen Poe. This entire series is actually based on a series of short stories by Poe, but just presented in a modern format. It's great! 35:01 Perry=Prospero. Napoleon goes by Leo.
i was so thrilled to see that you're reacting to this. I adore MF and this series is my favorite body of his work, including his films (even Dr Sleep, which is right up there in Top 3). It is true that MF's story is an enigma, as you can watch it, love it, and most importantly, get it. But i have to say that having knowledge of Poe's works would make you see this show in a very different way. You''ll still watch it, love it, and depending on how much Poe you binged beforehand, you'll get it. There are SOOOOO many references, homages, and easter eggs, from the names of the children to most of the episodes being named after one of Poe's works. FYI: you are correct. Perry is the cocky youngest Usher, but what was throwing you off was that characters also referred to him by his full name: Prospero. Prospero is the name of a character in one of Poe's' stories. Anyhoo, love your reactions (esp;ecially love the one to Carrie, my #2 Fave Film of All Time
The Poe easter eggs are super fun, but familiarity with Poe's writings isn't necessary to enjoy this show. It's second only to Hill House imo. Gina..... is a treasure. The actors crush it. Flanagan is a master. As a Stephen King fan, I'm desperate to see what he does now that he's left Netflix and is doing some exciting stuff with Amazon. It's gonna be a pleasure to watch you guys enjoy this series. I'm 100% sure you will! Let's Go!
You're not super off timeline wise 😂 Edgar Allan Poe died in 1848 (of an unknown disease, potentially rabies actually) - and most of Jack the Ripper's 'canonical' murders happened about 40 years later in 1888. He's known for the poem The Raven which is worth googling for future reference. Yes, Perry (Prospero) is the youngest. The one who suggested the nightclub.
I’m so stoked about this. All your Mike Flannegan’s reactions are great. Watched Midnight Mass twice while editing my photography, sometimes in the background
Love this series! You are going to be blown away! Are your “out there” theories right or wrong? I know the answer but I’m certainly not going to tell you 🤣. Spoilers would ruin the experience. I like your guesses tho. Maybe…maybe not. Hmmmm..🤔 Well, just wait and see! Buckle up. It’s quite an extraordinary ride! My fav Mike Flanagan movies in order are: 1. Usher 2. Hill 3. Bly 4. Mass 5. Club Can’t wait for the next reaction!
Samantha: "I don't think she's there" (meaning Madeline, supposedly behind Dupin) 11:06 Madeline is seen walking in the background Yes, you need to adjust your monitor's contrast, brightness, whatever ... you wanna see *all* the spooky stuff, LOL
So glad you are both getting into this one and to me this is the best show he has done after Haunting off Hill house of course. Edger died in 1849 Jack the Ripper killed 5 woman all in 1888 and only in that time frame, so that was after Edger's time. This one is full of his short stories...every episode is a different short story he wrote. So many familler faces as always with his shows and also he has filmed a movie based off a short story of Stephen King and again he uses a lot of familler faces in that one as well. It was interesting to see Mark Hamill here that was unexpected. the actor of the lawyer that talks to Rodrick is Carl Lumbly and he acted in Doctor Sleep as the ghost that helped Danny as a kid to learn how to capture the ghosts in his mind also the actress of Lenore is the actress of Abra in Doctor Sleep as well. There are some actors from the Midnight Club like the actor of Prosporo/Perry and the actress of Juno also Camille's assistants are both from there as well. Carla's character known as Verna is not the devil or death she is more complexed than all of that, you will understand as the show goes on and in the final episode what I mean. I love this show so much and can't wait to see how you react to every episode and the final in the end when everything comes together.
Woo and Hoo! I was just bemoaning that some of my favorite reactors haven't been reacting to anything that interests me lately and now you guys are doing this. Each episode is a nod to a Poe story, but you don't need to know that to enjoy the show. Much scares and creepiness ahead!
As someone who's not familiar with Poe's work or most of the actors in this show, I really liked it regardless. Since watching the show, I did check out Masque of the Red Death and liked it.
Another great series from Mike Flanagan! Really hyped to watch your reactions to this show. Flanagan’s the man! Also, he tends to put little Easter eggs in his work for fans of his previous projects, for example you mention the Ouija board on the bedroom when the kids wake from the storm, that’s a shout out to his film Ouija: Origin of Evil, which starred Lulu Wilson, who plays young Madeline Usher.
Since you know Rahul from Funhaus TBR, you'll be pleased to learn that Rahul got Hamill to record a message for Jacob, who loves star wars, saying that he hates him 🤣
Hurray! LOVED this show! Also, Edgar Allan Poe predates Jack the Ripper by more than 50 years. Poe was born in 1809 and died in 1849. Jack the Ripper was in the late 1880s.
She definitely was standing behind the black guy in that scene where he says his mother is standing behind him. Fortunato pharmaceuticals is named after a character from one of Poe's short stories, "The Cask of Amontillado." There is a character named Fortunato who ends up in a very unfortunate situation in Poe's story which is ironic. The jester, also a character from The Cask of Amontillado & the raven are significant characters from Poe's work. Also the title of this episode is the 1st line in a poem titled The Raven... "once upon a midnight dreary while I pondered weak and weary"
I’m going to enjoy TBR trying to say The Fall of the House of Usher every week! 😂 The show is great too, still can’t decide if it’s my fave Flanagan or not but it’s high on the list at least.
Every episode is loosely based on a different Poe story. And for more Mike Flanagan, you should watch Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and Ouigie origin of evil. I misspelled the last one. The show is amazing.
Please check out Midnight Club it has Heather Langenkamp who played Nancy in Nightmare on elm street She also will be starring In the next Mike Flanagan project that will be a new Stephen King movie !
This is THE BEST series in the Flan-a-verse!! Hopefully you’ll do his movies too. “Gerald’s Game”, “Oculus” and “Ouija: Origins of Evil” (which is the pre-qual to “Ouija”. He uses a lot of the same actors in them also. WHERE’S EPISODE 2?! You should do two at a time because they are so short… and I really can’t wait to see more of your reactions to this!
Midnight club is, IMO, the weakest of the Flanagan work, but don't skip out on his movies. The movie Oculus is a trip fest, but his movie Hush, a movie his wife Katie and he wrote, is a fun romp. It is currently not streaming, sadly, but once it comes back you guys will hopefully check it out. All that said, glad you guys are hitting this now!!
I expected a horror show, but it's actually a dark satire (on that note, you should watch The Menu). Didn't you catch that the lady who "orders" girls for her husband is Bev from Midnight Mass? The zombie-drug is real. There's a fictionalized movie about it called The Serpent and the Rainbow. Scary, but good.
(Add Shōgun to your watchlist!) Flanagan definitely has a knack for creepy dread, subtle imagery, and interesting stories. He’s a bit too long on his monologues, but he’s turning out consistently successful projects and audiences have fun watching.
His decadence of the late Gothic Influenced Baudelaire one of the great French decadadents. Psychological horror. But it was 7 adaptations by Roger Corman that are most famous. Seems insane you've never heard of them they are considered classics mostly the great Vincent Price in the lead. I'd be surprised if this series is any where near them Including Corman's house of Usher! Very well we shall see.....
This is probably my favorite show that Mike did the performances are amazing and the stories intertwined with the poems of Edgar Allen Poe is just amazing
The music geek in me notices the song New York Groove in the background. 1978-79 the rock band KISS had a temporary split so everyone can go make their own solo album. Ace Frehley had to kost success in his. This song New York Groove was his song that ended up so popular that the New York Yankees baseball team used it as a intro theme song for so many years. I think it still gets played when they walk out onto the field.
I have a movie recommendation for you to react to: ALIEN 3 (1992), an interesting and underrated sequence, which was even directed by David Fincher, it's worth checking out.
First time I watched this series I watched the first episode late on a Friday evening before going to bed. When I got up Saturday morning I binged the rest because I couldn't wait to see it xD It is such a well made series and so cleverly intertwined with the Poe stories. I wasn't super familiar with them (I should have paid more attention in lit class in Uni), but I have read up a bit after the fact.
Regarding Midnight Club: it was planned by Mike Flanagan to be a 3 (or 4 I can’t remember) season story. Netflix cancelled it after the first season (classic Netflix🙄) After they announced the cancellation Flanagan released an outline of the entire Midnight Club series as he had written it, (on Reddit I think?) He then did this series for Netflix and finished out his contract with them and now has signed a deal with Prime. I hope Prime treats him better🤞🏻
The Midnight Club was meant to be two seasons long but, when Mike signed to Amazon they cancelled it after one. He did reveal all the Season 2 plans and spoilers on his Tumblr but I felt Season 1 can stand on it's own anyway.
People who react to this all seem to go straight to a deal with the devil but I always think she is more like an avenging angel. I can't say more until you have seen the whole series. 😊
Carla Gugino is mind blowing in this. Her recitation of The City In The Sea later in the series is perfection.
I absolutely LOVE that Juno's wardrobe is what an elderly woman would wear stylized for her youth

The crow you're thinking of is actually "The Raven." As in, "quote the raven, nevermore."
I have always wanted to get nevermore tattooed on me as a poe fan & a lover of literature
*quoth
It's "quoth the Raven, Nevermore"
@@thebookgeek87 Oh, that'd be good, a raven perched upon an old gothic headstone that's engraved "Nevermore" or "Beloved Lenore"

Ruth Codd who plays Juno, is sublime as the pivotal role of Anya in Flanagan’s The Midnight Club on Netflix

To clarify timelines; Poe died at age 40 in 1849, Jack the ripper was killing his way round Whitechapel in London in 1888
Raven. Not crow. Great reaction. Yes adjust brightness. Theres always something lingering in the back.
Each episode is based loosely around one of the works of E. A. P. and the character names are names of various characters in the works of E. A. P.
So glad you're watching this
We are so excited to view this with you.
omg. yes! this is a nice surprise :D
I’m going to enjoy TBR trying to say The Fall of the House of Usher every week! 😂 The show is great too, still can’t decide if it’s my fave Flanagan or not but it’s high on the list at least.
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😊
If you are a fan of Edgar Allen Poe this was such a good show with all of the references to his stories.
Haven't watched this show yet. I'll watch it with y'all though. I like Mike Flanagan's other stuff.
Every episode is loosely based on a different Poe story. And for more Mike Flanagan, you should watch Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and Ouigie origin of evil. I misspelled the last one. The show is amazing.
Please check out Midnight Club it has Heather Langenkamp who played Nancy in Nightmare on elm street
She also will be starring In the next Mike Flanagan project that will be a new Stephen King movie !
Another masterpiece from Michael
Loved this series so much
Such a crazy series. Enjoy the ride!
I can’t believe I didn’t realize you guys were reacting to this show. I love it. Gonna binge the reactions you’ve put out so far.
Can't wait for you guys to watch Shogun
Hurray! LOVED this show!
I tried twice to get into it, I just didn't feel it. But I'm sure it is some people's cup of tea 🫖 Mike's touch was in it ❤
If you want to figure out who "That" lady is... you'll have to think about Edgar Allen Poe and one of the major themes off his works.
Ah, I somehow missed that you started this! Time for a fun mini binge.
(Add Shōgun to your watchlist!)
Flanagan definitely has a knack for creepy dread, subtle imagery, and interesting stories.
He’s a bit too long on his monologues, but he’s turning out consistently successful projects and audiences have fun watching.
His decadence of the late Gothic
Influenced Baudelaire one of the great French decadadents.
Hi guys. Have a movie recommendation for you. Summer of 84 the actor that plays young Roderick is in it. It is an amazing movie!
Although Fincher himself might disagree.
The woman with the long grey hair and black glasses is Mary Mc Donald ( or McDonnell ) from Dances With Wolves !!
And Battlestar Galactica!! A series TBR needs to react to!!!
Don't forget, this is an 8 part miniseries, there's no season 2.
This series is one of the best hidden gems in recent times, in my opinion. 😊
This was a fantastic series, esp relating to Poe's work each episode
Yes the young one is Perry, aka Prospero. And if you didn’t know, the whole show is based on Edgar Allen Poe stories.
Edgar Allen Poe died in 1849. Jack the Ripper murdered between 1888 and 1891.
The mom is there... I literally jumped in my seat when I saw her
I can only recomend watching this show on an OLED TV. Preferably in a darker environment.
Based on the classic horror story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe.
The actress who plays Juno actually had her leg amputated in real life. She started out as a Tik Tokker surprisingly.
Great reaction i love it keep it up
Edgar Allan Poe (early to mid 1800s) lived before 'Jack the Ripper times' (late 1800s)
Don't worry, there is scientific basis behind missing the word "of" in a sentence. Look it up, it's quite interesting.
This is a great show. I still think Midnight Mass is my favorite, but this is very close.
