Preserving Appalachia: Sharing Their Homestead Traditions on YouTube | True Grit: Appalachian Ways

- Meagan and Andy have deep roots in the Appalachian mountains. They started sharing their farming to TH-cam and have found a new drive for what they do and why they are doing it. They want to keep traditions alive, ones that would completely disappear if only one generation decided to do something else. They eat 80% of their food from their own homestead and share any extras with their neighbors, friends, and family. But they are building a new community through their TH-cam channel where they can treat strangers like neighbors and share what they can. @TrueGritAppalachianWays

It was so great to meet y’all! Thank you for allowing us to tell folks about our tiny corner of the world ❤😊
Thank you for being so great and having us out! Your place is so beautiful that we had to talk ourselves into continuing to travel and not buying a farm right now!
My favorite channel…. You show honesty everything you do …. You tell the truth…… and not make up stuff…..
shows real life …..
traditions !! Love seeing the whole family working together too !!! They let their kids be kids …. But their children help because they want to !!! So enjoyable!! Educational!!! Thank you !
Y'all have to know y'all are my favorite channel (my favorite you tube family). You are so honest and real. I so appreciate that you don't put the fear of this world on your videos, and that you leave out the politics. I've actually stopped watching some channels that I have watched for years for going down the "gloom and doom" road, and it breaks my heart, because I come to you tube to get away from that. I've had gardens, pigs, chickens, bees and rabbits for years, and watching channels like yours teaches me knew things with each video you post. Thank you so much for that, and I adore you guys!

🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Thanks for making us all tempted 😝🤣
Especially in the spring, it’s been hard to not just got find a farm today 😅
You built the base by being honest and genuine people. All positive and no negativity.
I discovered True Grit back in January of this year. I fell in love with these folks. And I became excited knowing that they are in a local familiar place to me. I love how they are raising their children, and yes, they do keep it real!
❤️❤️
I just recently found Megan & Andy. I have binge watched their past videos since finding them. I grew up doing the life they are living. I do what I can now. We only have 3 1/2 acres and not all of it is usable. We are getting chickens this spring and I always garden. But, the soil here is poor and I have had to do it in raised beds. But seeing how they have improved their soil using the chickens gives me hope. I have to do it all on my own because my husband is not able to because of his health conditions. He will be 61 in July and I will turn 56 in June. I love this couple because they are so genuine and down to earth.
We are fans of theirs as well! They are just very real which seems like an odd thing to say, but we know not everyone on the internet can keep to their true selves. Chickens will improve the soil drastically! When we farmed for 6 years, chickens was the biggest factor to improving our soil! We appreciate you watching and hope your garden and chickens all do well this year!
We love watching Meghan and Andy. They are real ppl. They don’t put on a show, they put themselves out there and we just love their honestly. No fakeness. It’s a breath of fresh air to see their journey and to hear them tell their successes and failures. 😊❤. Maybe someday we will get to meet them.
Absolutely!!! They are some amazing people! We were so fortunate to have met them and to do this video!
I found Megan and Andy about a year ago, by accident, and they are now my favorite channel. I watched 7 or 8 of their videos yesterday-some I had previously viewed. I live in NC and grew up with my daddy growing a huge garden and giving away food to friends. We always had chickens (and eggs, of course). We didn’t can much but we stored enough potatoes for the whole winter and froze about 300 ears of corn every year. We even had a few hogs when I was a teen. I always helped harvest but wish I had paid more attention to planting and caring for the food. I learn from Megan & Andy. Thanks for featuring them. (One note: they seldom , if ever, ask for a like & subscribe. And still, their channel is growing. They deserve it!) I just subscribed to your channel. Keep finding the good ones!
They were so great to us! They are inspirational to us to want to farm again! Their passion for helping people learn to grow food is incredible! We found out afterwards that they were our 50th farm done! It has been a whirlwind and we can’t wait to get to 100 visits done! We have learned so much already!
Two special people that are honest , caring & down to earth people , amazing talent , this brings back memories for us back in the 60's & 70' s , thank you !
Well said! We felt that they are inspiring and teaching the next generation or the generation that got separated from farm life! We learned so much by being there! They were so great they almost had us convinced to farm again on that day!
True grit is my favorite channel!! So happy to see this recognition.
It was such an honor to be able to meet them and have a conversation about farming with them!

I watch Megan and Andy because they are real.....True Grit for sure!
They are able to live the lifestyle that I would love to live, but I can't so I watch them and they encourage me to do what I can, as much as can on my little (big) half acre.
Yall remind me of my Maw and Paw. I'm 62 this year, and yall bring me so much joy to watch. ❤
I would love to come help you dress your chickens out so I can learn how to do it...maybe some day. I live in North Georgia, a little town called Chickamauga. You might have heard about it from the Civil War times.
Yall keep on , keeping on and enjoying your little family and farm and I'll keep watching and being blessed by yall!❤❤❤❤
They were incredible to meet and we loved their story with trying to show people their lifestyle and help others to do it!
Andy and Megan are so sweet, humble, and down to earth. They have a beautiful family. I love watching their day to day activities and how they never seem to let things get them down. They pull up their boot straps and off they go. 😊
Absolutely!! They are the sweetest people!! We are grateful to have met them!!
And you are making a difference too 💯

Such a down to earth couple sharing their life and teaching others while doing it!
They are truly inspiring! We were very blessed to meet them on this journey across the US. We know they are teaching a lot of people how to farm and the importance of farming and we found that so profound!
Megan and😢 Andy. You and them beautiful children take me back to a happier time and place in my life. We have a 89. acre farm. We have raised
tobacco, wheat ,corn, soy bean and hay. We've always raised a garden and canned our vegetables put our corn oakra squash in the freezer. You two remind me so much of me and my husband of 38 years. We worked side by side in the fields and log woods for many years with our children right alone with us laughing ,running and playing being kids. But they wasnt laughing when it came time to dig and pick them potatoes up lol😅 They sure hated that job. I want to Thank you for bringing back such beautiful memories and sharing your life's with us .Yall are great parents and hardworking people. We need more like ya in the world..

Y'all are blessed to have had the raising of homesteading and the passion to share. I was hoping you lived close to me but y'all are about 2.5 hrs away. I live in the upstate of SC. I love living vicariously through this couple.

What a blessing to live in a tight knit community. I have to say I do enjoy hearing a grown man referring to his Daddy. Their channel makes me feel young again. Vicariously of course. Andy and Megan are such a sweet couple. Theirs is the best channel I watch. And all this said I want to say you do make a good informative video.
Thank you so very much!! We loved meeting them and are really enjoying the journey we are on!
I think this is one of my favorite videos ya'll have made. Kind of sums up your life philosophy. I grew up on a family farm until I was 12. I'm 75 now and would love to be back there now. Keep up the great work!😊😊❤❤

Megn and Andy, I really enjoy watching ya'll. It's like watching a movie about family
and also informative about life on a homestead.
Megan you are an inspiration and I really admire all you do with taking care of your children and the animals and your skill at canning. God bless you and Andy
Hello... There's only one word for your channel. Captivating. Keep on going.
Thank you!!
I love Megan and Andy. You should interview his sister. Also, I’m enjoying your videos. I hope you have more gardening interviews. Also, Megan and Andy live close to the Farming Pastors Wife which would make popular content. Just saying.
Oh fun!! Thank you for mentioning the other people! Unfortunately, we are already to our next destination. We only stay in one place for about a month and are about a month behind schedule. But we will keep them in mind if we get back that way one day!
You asked them how they built their channel so I was thinking if you interviewed more TH-camrs this would build your channel. I subscribed to you because they mentioned that you had interviewed them. I’m from Garner, NC and love watching down to earth people. If you come back also consider Holar Homestead and Whippoorwill Hollar. Your great so grow your channel though other channels. The Farming Pastors Wife channel blow up overnight when Collard Valley Cooks mention one of her recipes.
Oh yeah! We are always open to more farms! Thank you!!
True Grit sent me! They're the best!!❤xo
That they are! We are so lucky to have talked to them about farming!

This is a wonderful video, I wish I lived close to you all!! I could learn more and buy fresh meat!! Your Ham looks amazing... I haven't eaten a ham like that since I was a child!! Many great blessings to you all!!!!

Your a lucky man
I love your channel and your family. You're so precious and I'm learning so much. I doie only ever had small gardens. And I love learning how to do things on a bigger scale. I've bought some acourage and don't know how to manage it or what equipment. I need to manage it and how to use that equipment.😊
That's so great ! Thank you for sharing, wish you good health and success.
Thank you so much!!
Clear blue skies and no Airplanes vapor trails................................ so nice.
eating your own grown food, you know what is in your food and no added ingredients and you are healthier by doing that. We are trying to do that here in WI I grew up in the country and my relatives live longer by canning there own food.
That’s awesome!! ❤️❤️
I enjoyed getting to know ya’ll a little bit because our life styles are so much alike. I understand wanting to live away from the worldly world. I don’t want the outside coming into our little world. By the way we live in Smithville Oklahoma in the mountains. But not far from here is a place that tourism has taken over and it saddens my heart because it was so beautiful but is nothing but a tourist area now and is slowly creeping into our area. We always lived so far behind everyone else and we love it that way especially in such a fast paced world that we live in. Thank you for sharing.
❤️
Thank you this video is very informative! Love you all ❤️
Thank you so much! They were such great people! We loved talking with them! We have learned so much!
I was grown this way, just wish I was blessed to have found a good partner who would be in the way to continue to make it work for me now 🙏 I'm 46 twice divorced with four grandkids my 2 adult kids I have been blessed with... I have family in the Appalachian area but our family migrated more than a hundred years ago with the cattle and southwest Florida has been home from then out lol so I'm waiting for God to send me the right man 😂
Well it’s never too late to start your own thing! You don’t need a man to have a thriving homestead. ❤️❤️
Beautiful couple
Yes they are!

Because of Sow the Land, I am a new subscriber to your channel. Just a backyard wanna-be-homesteader here creating an art project 😁

Thank you!! ❤️
Thank you so much for this video, and all the other videos you've been making on your journey lately! It is truly such a blessing to be able to listen to you while I'm doing my chores. I admit that once you do find that special place to make your own, it will be difficult not having these interviews to listen to. Hopefully you can continue in some sort of similar format. May God bless and prosper you!
Thank you so much! Means the world with this comment! We don’t have a set plan on life after the road yet. We do have a rough idea. Our personal goal is to take what we have learned and apply it to our own farm. There is no life without TH-cam and this community that has joined in with us! We are very lucky to be able to do this right now with our kids being little but we will farm again and bring TH-cam with us!
In my corner of Missouri I can put money down on a hog or cow and that animal becomes MY animal in a sense. They are raising it for me. My understanding is that it creates a different tax and selling rate. It works for both farmers and clients. I don’t understand the details like the farmer does, but it works.
What a great method!! I love that you’re able to use a system like that!
Pick your trees that you want to make number out of. Ban them (cut a band around the bark at the bottom). Come back in 6 months & they will be dried & ready to mill. They will not twist / warp & such because they're already dried before you cut them up.
Oh! Nice tip! Thank you!
Maybe try making pickled eggs...that would be something different...just an idea.
Where do you find your video on curing your ham ?
I think this is the one you are taking about.

Guineas will keep down small snakes too. Downside is, they're not smart enough to differentiate between a predator and human visitors. That squawking ALL THE TIME can be nerve wracking. They also multiply like rabbits. Overall useful critters
Haha. I guess every animal has its positives and negatives huh? 😅
Naw guineas been in nc around chicken forever
Stuck in the past my butt, these are 21st century media influencers 😅
Hey I got unsubscribed!!!!! But I am back for ya. I'd like to stick out my tongue but I won't.
