Farming Full-Time is a Million Dollar Business
Jordan Green has been on his farm for 15 years. He always knew he wanted to have a close to the land, regenerative farm. When he started out he thought he would mainly raise pastures chicken. When he tried to find feeder pigs, he couldn’t find any. He realized that he could do so much more than just chicken. After scaling back quite a bit over the last few years, he now has 90 sows throughout acres of woodland. He finished out feeders for his own farm store but mostly he sells the weaned pigs to people all over the country looking for real forested genetics. Our conversation then navigates the details of how a farm of his size can change and pivot to help his local community and economy while also balancing living a peaceful and fulfilling life on the farm and with his family.

    I’ve tried reading through all the comments to see if anyone else has asked this but….if you use hay versus straw do you not get a lot of hay seed sprouting that needs to be pulled out? I mentioned that I wanted some hay for my garden and a friend chastised me saying that won’t work.

    • @BreakingNewRoots
      @BreakingNewRoots 37 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      That is a common question. And the answer is mostly no. There are many factors. If someone is cutting hay timely, there shouldn’t be seeds, but that isn’t always the case. Also, as long as the cover is thick enough, you shouldn’t have much coming through. That’s not to say that you won’t ever have another thing grow, it’s just minimal. And you have to keep applying the cover as the bottom layer breaks down. The soil itself has millions of seeds in it waiting for the right conditions to germinate and sprout. The idea that we can have open dirt and the only thing that will grow is what we plant is kinda of crazy. I hope this helps. 😊

On a totally not-really-important-and-you-may-already-know production point, when you are speaking, it is mono in the video. I did this with potatoes last year. Unfortunately, it was going well till 115° hit. Got baby potatoes. Hoping for better this year though. When I lifted the composted hay and clippings I left over the winter, my soil was amazing and worms everywhere 😁... I sunk kitty litter buckets in the ground last year also and had bumper crops of tomatoes, peppers and zucchini. Water conservation was my goal doing the buckets with drain holes, along with layers of hay on top. It worked!! Only watered once a week in the 90° weather. Trial and error folks. Start small and watch what works. Every location will be different for everyone. But healthy food with no chemicals is the end goal 👍

    Interesting. I’ve worked in various industries and noted how each of them are run and are successful by cheating and not following regulations they themselves have set by their own managed associations. Embryonic businesses are often allowed to start and if it looks like they might be successful as competitors or innovators, they are clamped down on because of the unaffordable regulations or shortcuts taken (more recently hacked by the big boys themselves and exposed as not taking due care of client data). The businesses (and charities actually) are then absorbed into the big boys’ model. I’ve known of patented innovations of startups that were bought out in a tyrannical manner only for the patent to gather dust because if used would provide a cheaper, more efficient product for the masses; using less energy etc etc that would destroy the multi billion dollar business of the big boys. One example was 40 years ago. The lives of young entrepreneurs who were wealthy from birth were destroyed when their washing machine design business was stopped in its tracks. Didn’t require detergent, used very little water and only if the items needed to be ironed), 10 minute “cycle” (it didn’t cycle actually) and didn’t shrink nor colors run. We’d be at net zero by now.

If the small man really researched what’s needed to start a business before embarking on that road these days it could easily look impossible. Made me chuckle when Elon just decided one day to dig a hole in a car park without researching California laws and gave birth to the Boring Company.

My mom & i made a Ruth Stout garden when i was a young teenager in the 70s. It wasnt the best but by golly, we grew some things in that sandy Texas soil.. never watered, never thinned, never tended to. Amazing! I used it later in my own gardens and could put my arm up to my elbow in the soil afterca couple or 3 years.. Awesome farm! My hatsvoff to old hippies & Ruth Stout!

    Your homestead is beautiful. Your children are very lucky to grow up there and learn so many skills. I lived in Southern California for almost fifty-six years. Our last property, although just an acre, had sixty-two dwarf and semi-dwarf organic fruit trees, nuts, plenty of citrus, and full size figs. We had early, mid, late season trees. They provided produce the entire year. We had a ten thousand square foot organic garden in the ground, four or five 4' X 8' garden boxes, grapes, berries, herbs, and cactus. Our daughters loved it. We had an area for soccer, a large koi fish pond, a pool with a spa, grass, and a large playset. We were truly blessed. We are currently in Central Texas, with a few fruit trees, vines, and a smaller garden in raised beds. I'm hoping to move next year to a final food forest and try my hand at chickens.

    I cried when you made the comment about giving an elderly person tomatoes. That's food and a blessing not just tomatoes.

    Lorraine - 1st time to your site. No idea who you are but interested in listening to Joel. I'm going to listen and based on the comments, should be a good interview. I hope to come back and listen to future videos / interviews. In the future, don't be afraid to introduce yourself and especially for me being a 1st timer (New Viewers that I'm sure you want), I want to get to know you the interviewer. A small Bio in the description would be great and as listen more, I will know BY NAME who I'm following. Thanks, Ken

      @@BreakingNewRoots Olivia - Thanks for the reply. I have listened to Joel on a few of my regular channels talking about 'today' and what his take regarding food related issues vs. yourself going thru the history. Sort of the 'Story behind the Story' which is great !!! I don't know why so many content producers 'Hide' to some degree. YOU ARE YOUR BRAND. I'm sure you are interested in growing the channel and YOU are still and will be the common thread of your channel's success. I look forward to viewing further.

    Love this story. If she can’t eat grain fed meat, do they feed organic hay and alfalfa pellets? I know alfalfa is a grass/hay, but there are lots of chemicals used in its productions.

      Thank you so much!! Her story is amazing!! I believe they cut their own hay so they can control what goes on the field.

    I found this life saving tool on a short. With you having such a large herd and calves in born regularly this might be very useful. It's used when a calf is born not breathing. th-cam.com/users/shortsHWxJp8DAlp8?si=Cu3eOqJFM5o_iKAR
