  • Steven Universe was one of the biggest animated shows of the 2010s, but when it comes to the movie, can someone who has never seen the show like it as much as fans do? In this review, I’m about to find out, since I do consider myself a Steven Universe newcomer and will be using the movie as a gateway to the universe of crystal gems.

Spinel has one of the saddest backstories of any cartoon villain. Dark fact: Rebecca explained why Spinel's gem flipped, was because she felt so many emotions in the moment she realized the truth, almost being on the verge of a "s***ide" of her light form.

Here are some pieces of trivia:
    1. Rebecca Sugar stated that what she wanted people to take away from the movie and Spinel's character arc was that it's alright to be a 'work in progress' and it's you who needs to want to change and get better.
    2. Rebecca Sugar based Spinel on a favorite stuffed rabbit that she once carelessly abandoned in her backyard as a child. Upon rediscovering it six months later, she found the toy had permanently changed after exposure to the elements. This same incident also inspired the 'Everything Stays' segment in Adventure Time.
    3. Garnet was originally meant to sing the entirety of True Kinda Love, but when her voice actress Estelle first read the lyrics, she suggested Steven should sing the verse starting with "Hey, you, show me that solvable problem," as it fit in with his goal throughout the movie.
    4. The film received a theatrical release internationally and was scheduled for a one-night sing-along via Fathom Events on March 23, 2020, alongside Homeworld Bound (2020) (which was to premiere that week), but the event was canceled as movie theaters started closing the previous week due to the 2019-20 Coronavirus pandemic.

Spinell’s inspiration is also very interesting, it comes from one of Rebecca’s childhood toys that she one day lost in her garden and finding again several weeks later. The side that was facing the sun lost almost all of its color, it changed despite not moving an inch. It also inspired the Adventure Time song « Everything stays » that she wrote:
Let's go in the garden, you'll find something waiting
Right there where you left it, lying upside down
When you finally find it, you'll see how it's faded
The underside is lighter when you turn it around
Everything stays right where you left it
Everything stays, but it still changes
Ever so slightly, daily and nightly
In little ways, when everything stays

On the one hand, I can’t fathom a newcomer watching the movie first since it’s basically takes place *after* the series and expects you to already be familiar with all these characters. On the other hand, the movie does basically give a recap of the series and retreads each character’s arcs due to them being “reset” by Spinel, so it’s not as if it’s not newcomer-friendly.
I’d overall give the movie an 8/10 as well, since it’s not the best the series has to offer, but still a great, wonderfully animated musical with flat-out the best antagonist to come from the series. And all the songs are definitely huge bops, especially Here We Are in the Future, Other Friends and Drift Away.

14:30 I always saw Spinel as if you take Pinkie Pie from Mlp and make her a villain but that works too. Also, You know who Spinel also reminds me of a lot? World from FHFIF movie Destination Imagination. Think about: all they want is to be friends, but both can be very toxic in different way, and they both tried to attack the main characters. However, World suffers trauma from being alone in his own world because he was selfish on not letting his kid go, but learns to get out and make some new friends. while Spinel was more like a clingy younger sibling to Pink, whose purpose was to just entertain and doesn’t take things seriously, but learns not to let one tragic destroy who she really is.
But as someone who’s seen the show, With an engaging character driven story, beautiful animation, songs that great to listen and going into more depth into the characters we know and love, Steven universe the movie is greatest CN movie since Ed Edd n Eddy’s big picture show. Plus, it honestly works well as a stand-alone movie. I definitely give it a 9.5/10.

I was a Steven Universe fan ever since the beginning when the first episode came out and it still stands as one of my favourite CN shows. You know, maybe it's best for Animat to not be familiar with the show before the review, because not everyone is familiar with the show, so having the movie review be from the perspective of a newcomer will make the review more assuring to anyone watching it. Anyway, my guess for the next review is Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. Because he said that the next review is a smart sequel and I remember him mentioning in his top 10 animated sequels review that the film had a lot of messages and philosophies. What's also interesting is that since he is older and smarter now than he was back then, I wonder if after he sees the movie again, he would place it higher on his top 10 animated sequels list if he chooses to revise it.

Three things about my thoughts as a recent fan of Steven Universe (circa 2020):
1- I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like the series is stuck in a loop of appreciation nowadays; being loved, then hated for one reason or another, then going right back to being praised. Am I right? Probably not, but that's what I feel.
2- I get being mad at a fanbase for what members of it did in the past (i.e. sending death threats towards a fan for drawing a character wrong to the point of said fan contemplating suicide), but-- HEY! Blame these idiots, not the show or the whole fanbase. Especially because this kind of action goes against the very moral of the show itself.
3- F**K the journalist who accidentally doxxed Rebecca Sugar. Taking in mind the toxicity and aggresivity of members on the internet who either love or hate the show, even if it was an accident, this stunt of this person could've put her life in DANGER.

I'll say I used to enjoy this movie highly as fans would, and I'm actually impressed that this does have more of the capability to introduce newcomers that even a little more could be explained to prove it's actually possible they can enjoy this. I was a bit concerned it was going to be 'heavy' even for new people to handle or not enough context to understand it all. I guess Steven is strong enough to make an impression as much as he made an impact!

What are you talking about? Cal-Arts is absolutely a definable style. Simple lines, soft curves, a mixture of old-school western animation (Betty Boop days), and Moe anime character designs, usually uses the "bean mouth". It's also incredibly overused and it would be nice if we could get animation that uses something else.

    • @moviemaestro800
      @moviemaestro800 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Calling it the CAL-Arts style is part of what makes it technically undefineable, since every Disney Renaissance and Golden Age Pixar movie was also animated and directed almost entirely by CAL-Arts graduates, but the "style" described isn't applicable to those films.

You hit the nail on the head about higher priorities, for those not drawn straight to Steven Universe, things we'd prefer to watch that don't have such a heavy emotional emphasis that would put some people off or the amount of sad episodes I hear it has (I watched a few episodes but wasn't hurrying back to it ever, I was with shows like The Loud House, and still do with that one)

My favorite two characters throughout this franchise is easily the title character Steven Universe and of course the fan favorite spinel because Steven is a great main character that is brave enough to face any journey that his friends ask him to go, and Spinel is a fantastic, redemptional, emotional, and yet a lovable character thanks to the wonderful performance by Sarah stiles where she let it all out her moments of this picture hands off to Zach and Sarah for this picture they really show a lot of this movie.
    Spinel 11/10 🩷
    Steven 10/10 🩵

Well to explain the animation this was a made-for-tv movie which means it was outsourced to Korea or different countries that explains the animation and there was also some guests animation by takafumi hori who did other friends and I can make a change songs I may be young but I've been studying animation for 5 years straight so that explains the production value😊

Same goes for the movie because why not.

I feel pretty sad that this movie was followed up by a rushed final season, heard that so many people really disliked the last season!! I don't wanna put the blame on the show runner or crew, it's obvious that the heads at CN studios wanted to rush a product out oppose to taking its time. Praying that Rebeca Sugar is doing well as a song writer until she creates a new show in the future, hopefully

    • @SianiLane
      @SianiLane 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I actually LOVE the final season. It is rough, definitely. and I get how if you were watching in real time with years of neverending hiatuses etc it must have seemed like a shock, and not the story fans wanted, but as someone who came to the show later and watched it all at once, the events of SUF are foreshadowed all the way back to season one of the original show. It's actually an ingenious piece of storytelling- Rebecca Sugar hides Steven's trauma in plain sight, but it is cloaked in jokes, or Steven brushes it off, or we pass it off as part of the child hero trope, and then in SUF she turns it back on us and says "Haven't you seen?? Hasn't the story been telling you all along how traumatic and messed up this all is? You can't just skip merrily away from that $h!t, and if you try to you will ruin your own life." And like, that is an amazing message to put on television, much less children's television?
SUF legitimately made me look at aspects of my own childhood I had been attempting to skip merrily away from, and go get some therapy. Steven Universe as a whole is a primer on healthy VS toxic relationships, and how to recognize and navigate through trauma, and how and why you have to feel your feelings and take care of your mental health. My little ND self is very grateful to Rebecca Sugar for creating it, and I think people who hate on it A) haven't actually watched it in good faith, B) are so amazingly well-adjusted they have no need for it, and good on them, or C) would rather call something cringey than admit they are uncomfortable feeling their feelings.

love SU and this movie came out on my 18th which was an interesting present on cartoon network's part.
i have my issues with the series. from pacing issues, annoyingly quick resolutions, and often having the allegories the series is meant to represent being better and more depthful than the actual plot (eg. the entire diamond plot being an amazing allegory for reconnecting with an abusive and unaccepting family as a young lgbt person after time apart from them but being incompetent as a finale for the show's original run because how you deal with abusive families is a lot different from how you deal with genocidal warlords it turns out) and the animation is incredibly hit or miss, especially for like.. the first half of its run, which is the half most non-fans remember, hence why it got sort of a reputation for bad animation, despite prolly being the most solid looking mid 2010's cartoon network shows.
The show overall was still great and i think the massive ammount of hate it got in the late 2010's was a pretty reactionary mix of people not understandimg the term "mixed bag" and mid 2010's culture war BS not being able to accept a show with complex themes implicitly about introducing kids to complex concepts of identity and relationships that cartoons had largely failed to explore prior. plus people getting angry at a show not being what they wanted a show to be. which.. it clearly wasn't from the beggining so idk what they where here for ngl.

If I want to catch up on this series, but avoid the fillers, I posted such a list on my blog, along with an indication of where to stop, for example, I divided season 1 into parts to make it easier to find time to watch it.

One thing that kind of bothers me about this movie is that it’s a musical, like I get that the show has songs, but it’s not a musical series, if it was an Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, I would get, but not really a Steven Universe one, it’s true that the series has some bangers like “Stronger Than You” but I feel that the only reason why they have a good number of songs is to just extend the runtime, not to actually progress the story, which okay they do, but I feel that they could’ve done them better than forcing in a song.
