Kudos for bringing up Lilo's behavioural issues. She went through some intense trauma, and needed Stitch as an example to help overcome it.
I'll say this, Lilo and Nani adore each other, but they're sisters. The dynamic has shifted. Saying they can barely stand each other isn't a constant, it waxes and wanes.

Even after 20 years, Chris Sanders’ animation style still holds up beautifully to this day and nothing ahead of its time like Disney’s Atlantis or Treasure Planet. As someone who grew up in the new millennium, I will still feel immersed with the watercolor visuals and smooth lined computer graphics with the spacecraft.

Speaking of which, now that we're currently in the year of the overall studio's centennial, I decided to generate this particular instance of the "except you, you stay" meme from what I recently noticed regarding that particular era, thanks to somehow noticing a seemingly strict set of policies regarding the animated features that was released during Michael Eisner's tenure, especially since he was on his last legs as such during the first few years of the Post-Renaissance Era that I feel could serve as an accurate representation:

That’s kind of a moot point, the story of Lilo and Stitch is of two siblings dealing with the loss of their parents in modern Hawaii, and the issues that come with it like social services and making ends meet.
The story of Frozen is set in a fantasy world and revolves around a princess born with apocalyptic ice powers who had to isolate herself from her sister in order to prevent herself from killing her.

The fact Lilo & Stitch was animated at Disney World (which makes only fitting that it was the first to get a Stitch attraction, called Stitch's Great Escape) is my favorite fact about the movie, because it's something people don't expect since everyone automatically thinks California. But this was back in the day when Disney's Hollywood Studios (then Disney-MGM Studios) was an actual working studio...Brother Bear and Mulan were animated there too. Unfortunately those days are long gone as the theme park has moved from taking people behind the scenes of movies to INTO the movies.

Stitch is my personal favorite Disney character. I love his design that makes him both badass and adorable, his personality is a ton of fun, and he does go through great development where he went from a

This was a really good movie. One of the things I really liked about it was how Mr. Bubbles was never evil. He's not out to make Nani look like a bad guardian nor does he want to tear the sisters apart. No, he's just concerned about Lilo's safety and well being and if you were in his shoes witnessing everything going on, you would be too. That, and of course the relationship between Lilo and Nani is very strong and heartfelt as well. Sure, they argue sometimes, but that's what siblings do. They both have a lot on their plate after having to deal with the loss of their parents, so of course they're going to have their moments where they snap at each other. But even with those arguments, they still love each other very much and want to be supportive of each other during the tough situation that they're being faced with. I can understand how the alien stuff might feel a little distracting to some people, but I don't mind it quite as much since they can bring some entertainment value to the movie as a nice counterbalance to the drama.

I think what I love most about Lilo and Stitch as characters is that they really relate and empathize with each other. They're both outsiders who don't fit in with their respective worlds, but Stitch grows to genuinely care about Lilo in spite of the fact that Jumba created him for destruction. There's also the theory that Lilo is coded as autistic and I can definitely see aspects of it. What's nice, though, is that Lilo feels like a real kid.
So yeah. Your comparison is apt. The story of this movie may not make the most sense, but the emotional drive of the movie is what makes this movie compelling.

The reason why it's called "Lilo & Stitch" is because of the deep meaning of Lilo's name, which means "lost."
So together, it's subtly called "Lost & Pulled Back Together," representing the theme of both stories.

Fun fact: Chris Sanders, the director of this movie, was actually supposed to be the director of Bolt. The film's original name was "American Dog" and it had a much more science fiction vibe.. apparently though, everyone who saw the test footage didn't think it was all that good, and Sanders didn't want to change it, so he ealked off the project and worked for DreamWorks on How to Train your Dragon instead.

20 years later now since its original release and still holds up, man do I feel old now saying that. If Disney does another L&S movie in the 2D animation format, I'll watch it. You got a point of retiting the movie like that since that's where the heart and drama is at.

  • @brianlevine871

I can't believe one of my most favorite Disney movies is now 20 years old. And honestly, I'd say this is one of the best examples of combining real life issues with something fantastical/sci-fi, mainly with how Stitch's struggles reflect Lilo being an outcast and how he grew to love his newfound family. The animation is also breathtaking with the watercolor backgrounds, beautiful colors and unique character designs.
Also, how fitting that your next Classic Review is both another sci-fi Disney film and a perfect tie-in with Pixar's summer blockbuster. That, and something I enjoyed in my later childhood years.

Fun trivia-2 major scenes had to be altered or deleted. One was in direct response to the September 11th attacks and one after bad audience responses when Lilo was literally chased by a chainsaw tearing the wood floor and Stitch enticing Jumba to blow up the family house by using a gas hose. Yeah, this movie has its dark moments, and more darker than you think. The water color backgrounds are also a cool touch.

As much as Lilo and Nani make up the heart of the movie, I feel like Stitch himself is just as important in being the backbone or second half of the heart of Lilo & Stitch in the same way that Donkey was the heart of the first Shrek movie. Lilo and Nani's lives hadn't changed for the better until Stitch came into the picture.
You can even see it in the meaning of Lilo and Stitch's namesakes: "Lilo" being a Hawaiian term that can mean "lost" and "Stitch", well like the function of the actual stitch, meaning to pull something back together

This is one of my favorites! Nani and Lilo are one of the best sibling pairs in general! Lilo is a fantastically-written child character, and Nani is a heroine who deserves way more recognition as a strong female heroine (who doesn’t even need to title of “princess” to affirm how kind and capable she is)! But I do have to say that Stitch is one of my favorite male Disney protagonists with one of the best arcs, where he becomes good through different methods than say The Beast-and the way Lilo brings out his good side because she sees herself in him, is a big factor as to why !

Great job on this film. I love this film especially for its bond with Lilo and Nani but Stitch himself is strong too. Another cool aspect is that the title actually has a double meaning in that it’s about the relationship between the title characters but Lilo means lost one or quiet one and stitch means to patch up or pull together. As such, the title can mean lost and pulled together. That hits even harder when Stitch says “I’m lost.” at one point.

When it comes to Lilo and Stitch, I remember seeing it a few times during my childhood, and while I don't consider it one of my Top 10 Favorite Disney films either, I still appreciate it for what it offers, with the heartwarming story about the two sisters, the creative sci-fi elements like the aliens, and the message about family. I also remember seeing the TV series and some of the sequels afterwards, which were also really fun to watch from time to time. Something that I'm surprised didn't get mentioned in the review, though, was how Disney marketed the film by having Stitch high-jack iconic sequences from other Disney films and using those gags as trailers for the film. Those were pretty interesting to see.

Yeah, I was apart of the crowd that was super into Lilo & Stitch when it came out, I was around 10 or 11 at the time & I remember the McDonald's toys with the character on a surfboard & seeing the movie in the theater & everyone, I mean EVERYONE quoting Stitch saying "blue punch buggy!" Of course in his voice. My Disneyland trip was in 2002, when this movie was still new, I remember begging my mom for a Lilo & Stitch pin during our trip but it was a bit on the expensive side so she had to think about it for a bit. The sequels & TV series are also good, could be I was young & swept up in the craze but when I think back on it, I think of it as a whole, I remember when the TV series was brand new & catching each episode as it aired, this show did in fact help to build up the Disney expanded universe given the crossover episodes with shows such as Recess, Kim Possible, & American Dragon like it still blows my mind today that they did that. The movie that started it all is great but I do adore what the sequels & series added on, 625 is probably my favorite character in everything & without having a sequel that introduced us to there being other experiments & launching the series, we would of never had 625. I love what this movie started & the fact that it's all still talked about today.

What I like about this movie is just the fact that there’s two movies. One for children and one for adults. I rewatched it a few years ago and saw that whole other movies that I missed as a kid.

I remember that the final chase scene involved Jumbaa and Pleakley hijacking a jet plane and flying uncontrollably through a big city and a lot of tall buildings and skyscrappers. However, that whole sequence had to be reworked in light of the aftermath of 9/11.

One thing I like about Lilo and Stitch is its unique take on the class struggle. Here we see a working class Hawaiian woman looking for a job and trying to take care of her sister, and the jobs she takes seem to be based on Hawaiian tourism. It shows the contrast between them and the tourists. If this movie came out today, it would get called woke by the right. It’s a good movie, I honestly agree 100% with Doug Walkers review

It’s a miracle that Lilo and Stitch turned out so great even during Disney’s “Dark Age.” Being that it just tells such a compelling story about the meaning of family and actually explores childhood trauma and familial issues in a way I’ve seen no other Disney movie do so. You’re correct in that it doesn’t balance this perfectly with the most humor-oriented alien storyline, but for me both are juggled well enough that it barely brought the film down for me. As someone who grew up with this film and holds plenty of love and nostalgia for it, it’s by far one of my favorite Disney movies. And I’m glad that Chris Sanders’s animated tenure didn’t end here due to him going on to direct How To Train Your Dragon. Which then lead to the birth of one of Dreamworks’s best and most beloved franchises. And it makes sense, since Toothless even has plenty of the same quirks and mannerisms that Stitch does.

I like how the hawaiians have a slightly closer visual to the aliens compared to the tourists since one of the aspects is that they feel out of place. That slight difference kinda hammers it home.

I really love this movie as a kid. The story is heartwarming, the animation is cute and well made, the characters were funny and relatable, and the songs were very catchy. Me and my siblings enjoy this movie a lot and I still fond memories watching the sequels, the tv series, and playing the games online. Lilo and Stitch is one of our favorite Disney movies and it’s still a fun watch for all of us. And heck yes, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins is next! Can’t wait!

I love this film and franchise so much, coming this June on TH-cam, I'm going to begin a new podcast series dedicated to the franchise called "The Lilo & Stitch Experiment Pods-cast", where it's a weekly or biweekly podcast series that discusses about any topics related to the franchise, from it's movies or tv shows or individual characters or theme park attractions or more obscure stuff. Would you guys be interested in checking out my podcast series when it premieres?
Happy 20th Anniversary to the Lilo & Stitch franchise, and here's to many future adventures featuring our beloved blue alien and his ever expanding ohana.

Zurg points his laser gun towards team Lightyear: All right. *That's it!!!* I had *enough* with you!!!
Buzz: For Star Connand's Lord! What is it now Zurg?
Zurg: *Who did suggest Animat to review for next time our movie?!* Speak up *now!!!*
X-R: Finally!! We are gonna get some needed recognition!!
Zurg: *Yeah!!!* Recognition for AniMat's Seal of Garbage!!!
Buzz: What are you talking about?
Zurg: I can already see it!! He is gonna say that our story is just as deep and sentimental as the Hotel Transylvania franchise...
Booster: I actually liked those movies.
Mira: We are gonna pretend that you never said that. Please continue.
Zurg: Our humour is just as bad as the one from the Boss Baby movies, the animation as _good_ as the one from the Emoji Movie. And as for us being characters... He will describe us as shallow as the ones from those horrible Live Action Disney Remakes. *SO!!! WHO... DID... THIS?!*
Warp smiling from ear to ear: I did it!!
    Everybody together: *Warp Darkmatter?! Why?!*
Warp: Oh come on, you guys! In a time in which Disney kicks out Johny Depp, is completely woken, praise concentration camps, supports police violance and glorifies money more than anything else...
Buzz ironically: Look who is talking against money and power!
Warp laughing: Yeah... About that... Well! As I was saying! I think it's a nice time for the masses of people to remember what made Disney so wholesome in the first place and not being corrupted in such a disgusting degree. And also I did it to myself. Because with the only exception of Kylo Ren I blew up all the Star Wars Sequel Characters combined out of the water! :)

In my opinion Lilo and Stitch is the only good Disney movie that came in the middle/heat of the Second Dark Age, here is why in my opinion..
Fantasia 2000- The true end of the Disney Renaissance in my opinion that I think is superior to the original Fantasia and the previous / final three Disney Renaissance films.-9/10
Dinosaur-The book of Exodus told through Dinosaurs in the most boring way possible.-4/10
The Emperor's New Groove-David Spade being sarcastic the Disney movie.-6/10
Atlantis: The Lost Empire- The Disney movie that feels like it is directed by Joel Schumacher.-5/10
Lilo and Stitch-Disney doing their take on The Iron Giant and making it about family.-9/10
Treasure Planet- Treasure Island with a galactic twist and annoying and misused comic relief.-6/10
Brother Bear-A cliched story with underdeveloped characters and an annoying comic relief.-5/10
Home on the Range- The reverse retelling of Charlotte's Web that has a Ph. D. in annoying the audience.-3/10
Chicken Little-THE. WORST. DISNEY. MOVIE. EVER.-3/10
Meet The Robinsons- The true beginning of the Disney Revival Age which is a very heartfelt Disney movie about the importance of family and does a time travel plot very, very well, and I think is superior to Bolt. -9/10
If I could rank the Second Dark Age of Disney, it would be from worst to best.
    10. Chicken Little- 3/10
    9. Home on the Range- 3/10
    8. Dinosaur-4/10
    7. Atlantis: The Lost Empire-5/10
    6. Brother Bear- 5/10
    5. The Emperor's New Groove-6/10
    4. Treasure Planet-6/10
    3. Lilo and Stitch-9/10
    2. Meet The Robinson's-9/10
    1. Fantasia 2000-9/10
    I personally give this movie,
    Story: 8/10
    Animation: 9/10
    Characters: 10/10
    Overall: 9/10
Also Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is next.

I recently saw a video (by Vailskibum94 I’m case anyone wants to check it out) where it was about how the director of L and S was upset at Frozen and I definitely understand why; you see, Frozen is very overrate, yes, but many people see it as “the first movie Disney made that focuses on a sisterly bond instead of a romantic one” when in reality this isn’t true at all. L and S tackles this with Lilo and Nani. Like, this movie in my opinion does do a nice job showing us a sisterly bond where one is older and the other younger (while Frozen tackles the relationship where Anna and Elsa look like they’re close of the same age) and so hopefully more and more people will realize this if they hadn’t before.
    Ok, bye
