The two sentences just told them the date. Then the fox led them to the planetarium. They entered the date into the dial. They saw that it was a solar eclipse. Toph is legit one of the strongest earthbenders in the world, her technical and invented skills does make her the best but Bumi may beat her out on raw power. Though both pale in comparison to Kyoshi who literally caused plate tectonics but she was an avatar so does not count.
Age is also relevent here toph is only 13 right now and hasn't had the opportunity to go out and fine tune her skills with different fighting situations like sand, she's mostly used to a stadium. Bumi though is 112 and Kyoshi was like 200 years old as as well as a fully realized avatar
I can see Wan Shi Tong perspective, but at the same time he is incredibly proud, condescending and just not willing to listen. like here comes the Avatar link between the spirit world and humanity, protector of the balance. Wan Shi tong, being an incredibly knowledgeable and wise spirit could have listened to him and given him advice. Instead he immediately insults Sokka´s intelligence and devalues practical knowledge like the knot he shared. We get the hint that Zhao got the knowledge here about the moon and ocean being mortal in the library, and used it for evil, and that a lot of humans have misused their knowledge, but he has already categorized all humans to not be trustworthy and just closes himself to any point of view that opposes that view. And in the end he sinks the library forever, meaning he doesn't have to share the knowledge, but also stopping any new knowledge from ever reaching him. With all the stuff he has read, he should be the most open minded, wisest, most knowledgeable character in the whole universe who can see the value even in the smallest bit of knowledge(like the knot), instead he choses to be a jaded, close-minded, condescending douche.
The motivations of the spirits are entirely divorced from those of humans. As an ancient, incredibly intelligent being who's been curating a private library for god knows how long, imagine if a bunch of impetuous kids broke in to your place, lied to your face, and tried to use your knowledge to wage war. Whatever patience it had for humans is long gone.
Knowledge =/= wisdom. The Owl and Professor both loved learning but tons of trivia doesn't correlate to making good decisions or having good interpersonal interaction. @@silvsevie To be fair, there was no bigger picture to be seen for him, since the world of humans is really not something any spirit really has patience for. If he can retreat back to the spirit world and leave it all behind then he has no real need to care. Spirits have a lot of heavier stakes tied to their own affairs than humans do, as seen in future series. It's really their choice to live as they are and not bend to human ideals. Hell, humans won't even bend to the "positive" ideals of other humans a continent away. Old men from two different countries can have completely different world views based on similar wealths of knowledge.
I'm loving the StarWars tropes in this episode. Sand Benders were a terrible cross between the Jawas and Tusken Raiders. Filthy creatures. They probably thought Appa was one of their Banthas and were stealing him back. And the butthole in the desert was the Sarlaac Pit. I'd keep an eye out for Boba Fett.
That’s speciesism. Only colonizers believe the prejudice against native folk like Jawas and Tuskens. You must be a Vader cultist. Oh how much you must hate sand....
I mean, yeah, by the standards Wan Shi Tong set for himself, he did nothing wrong. But I also can't feel any sympathy for beings who are so "above" human squabbles that they take no sides in a war in which the lines are undoubtedly drawn between good and evil. The same evil side that nearly destroyed the flippin' Moon by stealing his knowledge. But oh yeah, the sides are all equal. Get bent, ya damn bird. Not to mention that he's not exactly above base violence anyway. "Your species is violent... now stay still so I can peck you to death."
Meh, there's still a bit of self-righteousness in that line of thinking. "Good", "Evil" and "morals" in general are always subjective human terms in pretty much every context, and whether or not all spirits overtly care about one over the other remains to be seen. The world of avatar is more about keeping balance, the natural order of things, chaos versus harmony, etc. etc. I wouldn't try to apply those concepts of "good or bad" judgement directly to non-human entities.
Wan Shi Tong did do something wrong. He seriously mislead the Gaang about his neck length. BTW - Sand Butthole was the name of my high school covers band.

Old men from two different countries can have completely different world views based on similar wealths of knowledge.
thus begins the appa's gone arc
I'm loving the StarWars tropes in this episode.
Sand Benders were a terrible cross between the Jawas and Tusken Raiders. Filthy creatures.
They probably thought Appa was one of their Banthas and were stealing him back.
And the butthole in the desert was the Sarlaac Pit. I'd keep an eye out for Boba Fett.
That’s speciesism. Only colonizers believe the prejudice against native folk like Jawas and Tuskens. You must be a Vader cultist. Oh how much you must hate sand....
Shhhhhhhh. Boba Fett the bounty hunter doesn't come in until later in the series.
Don't Take Appa! #StoptheSteal
omfg
Now there's a #StoptheSteal campaign we can all get behind!
OMG CLIPPY. 😩🤣
Oh they are in for a ride if they think they are getting appa back soon...
yall aint ready for the appa episode
Appa is fine... He's fiiiiiiiiine.⁹
Get ready to not see Appa for a while
Wan Shi Tong, Librarian frm hell
Wan Shi Tong is the creepiest creature in this show. Even more than Ko😖
Both Koh and Wan Shi Tong got me nightmares as a kid! Wan Shi Tong even got me afraid of owls for some time...
''aAPpa wOULd Be FiNe''
i mean your right to a degree i do believe he is right to take his knowledge back because of this but they do need it so there are two sides to this coin
Spoilers!!!!
Ultimately they didn’t defeat the Fire Nation with that knowledge. So no they didn’t need it.
@@blackflagsnroses6013 However they could have if it were not for Azula. Had the fire nation not known about the invasion, they would’ve gotten clapped.
@@ishmaelwilliams842 But the point is. In retrospect this episode was a complete failure for them
1) They lost Appa
2) Broke the trust with the Owl Spirit
3) The invasion didn't even work
SPOILERS for Lok
4). It comes back and bites them in the butt with Jinora
