Appa and Bumi are basically the only friends he has left from his life 100 years ago. Their connection is very strong. 14:29 The moment you realize that Toph is holding an entire building not only from sinking but dimensional travel between worlds. Wan Shi Tong is one of those beings you do not want to cross...is scary
I think Aang is taking things pretty seriously, but you're not going to see him sulking over it 100% of the time because that's just not the type of person he is. He knows the weight of the situation, but he does not have tunnel-vision. Zuko is in a different headspace because ever since he was a kid, he never experienced the love of his own father.
Every time I hear Spartan break down why he gets frustrated with Aang vs Zuko, all I hear is that he just prefers Zuko's personality. Which is fine, but has nothing to do with Aang not taking his work/role seriously. Not to mention, Aang if anything is a bit TOO mature for a 12 year old.
Pudgey: This owl is kinda evil. I mean, the Library is kinda his house. The Gaang was welcome despite Sokka’s lying to its face and stealing stuff. Then, they beat the Owl up when they’re the ones trespassing.
Aang not taking things as seriously comes up a lot, and I think that while a big part of that is because he's supposed to be a 12 yr old kid, I also see it as an aspect of his upbringing as an AirBender. Like Iroh said, Airbenders are nomads who aim for detachment and I feel that even the humor he mentioned is a part of that because humor is something we can use to separate ourselves from the dark moments in life. The fact is that Aang has lost more people in his life than any other character and I think part of his behavior is using what he learned from Gyatso in order to not delve into just how dark that is. It's most definitely unhealthy and its possible that things would advance faster if he didn't maintain his lighthearted nature but we also see how stifling being too far at the opposite can be through Zuko. The writers did an amazing job of paring the stories of Aang and Zuko and it works for multiple facets.
I think Wan Shi Tong provides a very interesting spiritual perspective. He’s something of a lawful neutral nimrod but you still get the feeling that he’s kind of right. His passion is hoarding knowledge for the sake of learning and preserving it, and humans consistently use knowledge to fight and kill each other, and he’s tired of it. If humans are going to do that anyways, he doesn’t want to be apart of it under any circumstances. The forest spirit bear and the moon and ocean spirits have a vested interest in maintaining balance and peace, but Wan doesn’t really. He’s completely content to be disconnected from the world, knowing that he’s something of a preserve for any potentially lost knowledge.
He just wants to collect knowledge, not use it. He scoffs at Sokka's gift, but there's a whole world of knowledge to be gained from knots. True, Sokka just giving one knot is more symbolic than actually useful in understanding them, but I think a truly knowledgeable spirit would have appreciated it. That makes me think he doesn't really understand what knowledge is, or that there's always more knowledge to be gained. And leaving the world means he will never gain more knowledge. It's kind of self defeating.
@@Lightning_Lance I mean yeah that’s his whole deal. He doesn’t need to use knowledge. What does a spirit who is disconnected from the world need to use knowledge for? He hoards it because he likes collecting and cataloging, and learning just for the value of learning. It’s hypothetical to him, to an extent. He might recognize the impact of it, like he knows what the ramification of the comet and eclipse are, but he doesn’t have the will or desire to act on it. He can recognize the use of familiarizing himself with even Foggy Swampy Style water bending for the sake of defense. In some way, that might make him a hypocrite, but the scale is vastly different. And I think he’s aware it’s self-defeating. It’s something of a sacrifice. He’s protecting what knowledge he has from ever being misused at the cost of ever getting more knowledge. The world moves on without him; people will advance and will kill each other with or without his help. He’d rather it be without.
@@Lightning_Lance he doesn't want it used for base purposes, not *at all*. I bet he'd be cool with someone wanting to improve farming methods or rediscover a lost legend.
@@Sinewmire depends, remember he doesn't like anyone who wants to over pass others knowledge for advantage so I don't know if that falls in that category
I think why everyone connects with zuko more is because we can relate to his struggles more, aang has problems & issues but they're not something we can relate to.
Aang is a lighthearted, peaceloving 12 year old tasked with the incredibly overwhelming and naturally quite violent task of saving the world from an evil army. In the second episode, he says that he never wanted to be the avatar, and all throughout the series we can see that he just is not the kind of person we naturally think of as some incredibly powerful person who will ruthlessly bring down the bad guys. We also see it with his dislike of the avatar state. The whole situation and his role diminish his humanity, he is essentially supposed to be an unstoppable weapon etc., while his personality is more or less the opposite of that. So one of his central struggles is reconciling his self-understanding with the very demanding expectations of him, expectations that seem to go opposite to who he is as a person. I think many people (especially when growing up) can relate to such a situation. While we are not routinely tasked with saving the world, many of us do often have to find their own way of relating to the demands set for us. Demands that seem overwhelming, or threaten to compromise our values etc.
@@SpadlRAang's core tenet is importance of freedom, which reflects in him relishing fun and games and in trying to be more carefree (as well as his pacifism and even vegetarianism, respecting the freedom of other living beings in that regard). Kid is trying to latch on to whatever he can that is still him to center himself from a literally global and extradimensional burden. Zuko forces himself down a path in life because it's the one he's been groomed to think is the only way to get what he wants, even if if isn't who he is like his mother wanted him to be. Aang, like in many other ways, is the flipside of that coin - he unlike Zuko, as the Avatar, *is* given only one path to walk on, but constantly tries (like an Airbender and with his personality) to find a different path, even just a small turn or detour while still going in the same direction, to try to still be himself at the end of the road.

ah Spartan, much to learn you still have. Katara isn't weak nor practices the "weak" way. There's philosophy behind this show that can be very much profound. Remember what Bruce Lee said "be like water my friend. If you put the water into a cup, it becomes the cup.If you put water into a kettle, it becomes the kettle. Water can flow or it can crash. Be like water." Katara is a waterbender specifically to show this. Where air and water align is the ability to adapt and flow. They can find a solution where no one else can see one. Water and air can find a weakness and a way out even if it looks like you're trapped in. Air is playful, imaginative and fun. Water is deep, emotional and adaptive. Fire is ... well you'll learn about it in the next book. Toph is Earth and designed to be the essences of Earth. Stubborn, direct and forceful. They can be destructive even to themselves and their own goals by being stubborn. Uncle Iroh explains why like the avatar a balanced person is like balanced elements, when you have too much of only one element, you become biased and blinded to the world around you. Remember, weak can be view many different ways. A man who won't back down is weak willed and easily manipulated. A man who to backs down has weak convictions and easily discouraged. Both are true and yet neither are truth. It requires wisdom to know what course of action is best and to able to think clearly requires self actualization beyond the Passion of Fire, The Directness of Earth, The Cleverness of Air and the adaptiveness of Water. This is where men can learn the difference between toxic masculinity and it's failures from Healthy Masculinity. There's lesson to learn about the human condition in such a great way to educate young people that it's a shame not many people experienced it.
I’m so glad to see this comment in here, I think a lotta these reactors who mainly watch shonen miss that brute force isn’t the only kind of strength. patience takes strength. restraint takes strength. negotiation and cooperation takes strength. it’s these qualities most men tend to be weak in because toxic masculinity teaches them to blast their way through any obstacle. Zuko’s arc is so beautiful because of the way in which we see him disconnected from his humanity and how’s he’s weaker for it; only from finding balance within himself can he begin to be a positive force to himself and others.
Chinese fun fact: the owl called himself Wan Shi Tong (in simplified Chinese: 万事通 wàn shì tōng) and he translated it to “He who knows 10,000 things”. That’s a more literal translation but there’s a cultural meaning to the number 10,000. In ancient China, having 10,000 of anything is inconceivable. So the meaning of the number 10,000 (wàn 万) is synonymously associated with an inconceivably large number. So his name should be taken as “He who knows everything.” (So much you can’t even count).
The idea of Wong Shi Tong makes a lot of sense...To an all knowing spirit who cares about his library and knowledge...No war no matter the justification really makes any meaning to him...Humans and our wars don't really matter to him cos what does it mean to him if Ozai takes over
When I was a child I loved this episode so much. Something about the library, the owl and the planetarium and Toph and the sandbenders did it for me lol rest of the season is complete fire, can’t wait
I think Iroh does realize he treats him like a son to fill that void. He has stated it more or less like that to Zuko in previous episodes. What he didn't realize is maybe he has the right to say to Zuko that he's important to him and ask him to stop being so selfish and careless. I think that was Toph's actual advice to Iroh.
Spiritis actually have a lot less respect for the Avatar than humans, and we have humans trying to snuff him out. Some spirits are much older than the Avatar. It's not as impressive for them.
Yeah I mean literally of the only two other major spirits we’ve been shown in the show (aside from Roku and his dragon) one of them attacked Aang in a rampage and one had stolen the face of an Avatar’s lover and wanted to steal Aang’s. Not a lot of respect from those guys.
Great time for the Aang discussion at the beginning. He doesn’t take things to seriously most of the time part of that is his up bringing some of it is his age. Toph holding the library just shows how strong she is. Look how quickly it goes when she lets go to try and trow some sand. Great episode and reaction as always. ❤
I think one of the coolest things that this team did with their animation is they intentionally made Toph's earth-bending a different martial arts style to the rest of the kingdom. "Hey look at these lion turtle things!" oh Aang... you crazy guy, always distracted by unimportant things. You better get serious. Being all distracted like that won't solve any of your problems.
3:10 i find it odd how you said the emotional moments from aangs side of the story dont hit as hard right before you go through the emotional wreck that losing appa is.
The beauty of this show is that every single episode even the goofy ones help with WORLD BUILDING and that helps soo much later on for the ending season and korra series to be more amazing
Aang's storyline at this stage hasn't been intense at all because he's always had (as an air nomad) a defined mindset, no spoilers; but you'll love his story once he starts to grow as a character and start to find cracks on his view of the world and himself
While Aang can be lax I don't think he was this episode nor do I think he doesn't take the Avatar job seriously. The reason they were taking vacations were because all of them were training and they were tired and it was a group decision, not Aang's. Yes he has a big role but the fact is he is 12 and he can't be on every battle field because he is learning the elements....a lot of which is off screen. I don't think Aang being a pacifist is the same as being lax about his job as Avatar. That isn't the reason the Avatar shouldn't know who they are until their 16. Lastly, Zuko having more drive to something he is personally invested in versus Aang not wanting to do what equivalates to his 9 to 5 are 2 different situations. The fact is Aang is childish because he is a child with no background of abuse like Zuko.
I think your feelings toward all the characters, including Aang is pretty spot on for this point in the story, bc you’re right, he is still not taking this as seriously as he should. I am sure you will absolutely love how the whole show wraps up! One line from the first episode to always remember about Aang is when Katara says, “Aang brought us something we haven’t had in a long time, fun.” Sokka replies, “You can’t fight firebenders with fun!” Aang says, “You should try it sometime.” This was said about him in the very first episode for a reason, it’s who he is down to his core. Never underestimate someone like that :) loved your reaction!
"As usual Aang off topic" you have no idea 🤣@11:52 Edit: I can't wait for you to come full full circle with Admiral Zhao. He had the worst fate of them all in the end imo.
i see it coming a mile away. you gotta give Aang more slack. think about what he brings to the mission everyday (he saved everyone btw). And never forget where he comes from. Or Sokka.....Sokka is the way he is because of his childhood, tribe, and experiences.
Also please keep in mind to keep realistic expectations for Aang 🤣Mans is 12 and was born in a totally different time period. Not to mention he was raised by monks, are known pacifists and to avoid conflict/fights, as well as in episode 2 he mentioned he never even wanted to be the Avatar. That's a LOT of pressure for one kid lol. I know yall wanna see him "mature" fast, but just keep all of this in mind lol. I do get it though, cause he isn't just a regular person, he's the Avatar so he has to acknowledge and fully accept that. So it's a tight rope to walk on. Edit: Zuko's scene was so GOATed in that last episode!!! And I love this episode. Watching the reaction now 🙏
man i remember when this episode and the next episode came out. i was with my family dropping my brother off at college (university) it was marketed as a huge event.

oh Aang... you crazy guy, always distracted by unimportant things.
You better get serious. Being all distracted like that won't solve any of your problems.
0:18 no, it's Earth rn next season's Fire.
I had to do this because it's such an obvious joke lol
3:10 i find it odd how you said the emotional moments from aangs side of the story dont hit as hard right before you go through the emotional wreck that losing appa is.
The beauty of this show is that every single episode even the goofy ones help with WORLD BUILDING and that helps soo much later on for the ending season and korra series to be more amazing
Aang's storyline at this stage hasn't been intense at all because he's always had (as an air nomad) a defined mindset, no spoilers; but you'll love his story once he starts to grow as a character and start to find cracks on his view of the world and himself
11:56 Oh c’mon now, you gotta cut my big Aang some slack! Lol
“You think you’re the first person to believe their war was justified?” One of my favorite lines from this show.
Ahhh i was just checking to see if you guys posted another avatar reaction!! Made my day ❤
11:56 Spartan, this one is for you.
That's all I'm saying. Just be prepared to accept this L later.
He’s always wrong
"As usual Aang off topic" you have no idea 🤣@11:52
Edit: I can't wait for you to come full full circle with Admiral Zhao. He had the worst fate of them all in the end imo.
why?
i see it coming a mile away. you gotta give Aang more slack. think about what he brings to the mission everyday (he saved everyone btw). And never forget where he comes from. Or Sokka.....Sokka is the way he is because of his childhood, tribe, and experiences.
Poor aang he trains everyday really bard yet everyone has all the pressure on him a 12 year old boy including spartan and pudge
Watching the reaction now 🙏
To be fair Wan Shi Tong was right.
UK snow day again, perfect timing! Thank you ❄️👍
First people that remember the general mentioning his discovery of the moon spirit weakness at this library.
man i remember when this episode and the next episode came out. i was with my family dropping my brother off at college (university) it was marketed as a huge event.
Calling it now. By the end of the show Spartan & Pudgey will be having ATLA march/figures/posters/etc. added to their collection.
That "I'm sorry Appa" always breaks my heart😭💔
The Avatar has a special bond with their spiritual animal/partner.
11:22 Ay to be fair people don't just walk around with fuckin books on them or stuff like that. Idk what that owl thought 😭
I love that Toph is so powerful and perceptive with her abilities that you sometimes forget she is blind.
LMAOO yall kept talking about unserious Aang, well... let's say you've got some great timing 😁
We saw already 2 sprits before that attacked the avatar, the panda and the one that stole face. So its already said that its not just good and evil something they have they own reasons, like the library
Yees more avatar content😍😍😍
11:53 I greatly disagree with Spartan on this. Not at all off topic.
6:35 They're prairie dogs.
Those prarie dogs are 1 of a handful of animals that stayed one species.
"Yeah, I didn't think that that's where it was gonna wrap up. So Appa will just be gone for another episode."
Uh... yeah. One more episode...
Seems like it's going to wrap up really quick, just a very appa focused episode then we're back to normal right ? ? ? 😬
LOL oh toph! lol, i think we at times forget that she's blind, gotta love her sense of humor haha!
getting avatar two times a week is a dream
12:00 sorry, but the lionturtles are so not off topic.
i love how they didnt realize it was a fox since every animal is some sort of a combination, so a fox doesnt exist in this world :D
They are from the south pole. No land animals live there except for pets so every land creature will look odd. Regular or hybrid
@@TheMrPeteChannel so toph is from the south pole. ok.
slight spoiler for Book 2
its because they only know hybrids. "normal" animals only exist in the spirit world. there is a similar reaction to the earth kings bear. the bear is one of the few exceptions.
You may want to check again how long a usual solar ecliplse lasts in our world. The entire day seems a little bit long :D
Sokka is one of the smartest characters in the whole show.
The last few episodes weren't fire, they were earth 😂
3:05 oh boy, famous last words. Appa T-T
Appa also appears to be vulnerable from the sides
will you guys react to Dominion 2018 and Seaspiracy?
Even the Australians fear a giant owl.
Sokka honestly drives most of the show for the protagonists.
Depression has started...
Prepare yourselves for feeling true emotional!
I love the predictions of when appa is coming back
I can't wait for u guys to react to next episode🥰
I just love your reactions.
but what would have happened if wan shi tong had talked about spiritual portals to bring back airbending to the human world
After can you react to Avatar The legend of Korra :D
Nice reacts guys, new sub
🔥❤️
It feels like you two and the others all forgot Toph was blind lol.
It's getting serious now
Toph blind jokes never get old. 🤣
Yoooo 💛
poor appa :(
first?
You guys may want to do 2 episodes at a time. This is taking forever.
2x14 is where it all gets serious
Can't wait
Stop hyping everything up just let them enjoy every single episode
Its already been serious for a bit now, theres nothing else to hype up dude
@@KenwayDACR okay sorry

I‘m coming home from an exhausting work week and the first thing I see is your new avatar reaction! And just like that, my worries are gone for a while 🫶
