It's interesting that what Azula considers her best fighters are non-benders. It was her saving grace for me and made me believe that she's not 100% bad.

This comment contains spoilers for Book 2 and 3. You have been warned. I honestly think Azula was testing Mai's loyalty in this episode. Mai joined her immediately, just to kill some boredom, not like Ty Lee who was harder to recruit but is FAR more loyal to her than Mai ever will be, and I think Azula KNOWS it. Ty Lee was always on Azula's side, even when they were teasing Zuko and Mai as kids, while Mai liked Zuko better. Mai was shown to, occasionally, refuse Azula's command. Like in "The Drill" or letting Basco go without a fight in the Book 2 finale; but only if Azula herself wasn't present. She knows how to play this game. We also see her side eye Azula in the episode "The Headband" after she interrupts her and Zuko's....make out session. In "The Beach", Azula was the one Mai lashed out on first (I'm not counting Zuko). I honestly think she wanted to do that for a LONG time but couldn't. The trade situation forced Mai to choose between her brother and Azula; if Mai refused Azula's disguised command to call off the trade, Azula would know Mai didn't fear her enough to be loyal to her, but if she complied, Tom Tom would be in danger with the resistance. Or so it would seem. When Azula told her the trade wasn't fair, Mai glanced at her brother for a split second, seeing him unharmed, in good hands and seemingly happy and content....she knew he wasn't in danger, so she agreed. Mai is a complex character and my favorite female character and I wish she got more time to shine. But I think, deep down, we all suspected her to betray Azula one way or another. That's why her eventual betrayal doesn't feel sudden, but build up to me. Not like Ty Lee's. That was a shocker. Thank you for reading
I kinda hope the Netflix version is dark and aged up with a GOT vibe. The animated show will still have its place but the potential to bring in more audiences is huge

Man i'm loving your reactions of this season. You guys are enjoying this one soo much and with good reason. For me, the 2nd season it's the most well written of all of them. The director did a marvellous job with this season, it's the one i enjoy the most, despite the fact the 3rd season has much more action and drama, but the 2nd season is much more authentic and solid, gives a much more realistic vibe than the other two. @@SeanTanktop All those previous times of strife eventually died down though. It’s difficult to have hope now, in the moment. Maybe i’m just too weak to be optimistic right now.
