Stevie Wonder could do no wrong during this period of the 1970s. And this song is a perfect example of that ... one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking ballads you'll ever hear. A masterpiece.

No, Stevie wrote every song on the album. Another beautiful gem from the classic Innervisions. Love the way this segues into "Don't You Worry 'bout a Thing" on the album. One of my all-time favorite albums; this would go that proverbial desert island with me. Great choice, thanks.

The song "All is Fair in Love" is a reflection on the complex nature of love and the challenges that can arise in a romantic relationship. The lyrics suggest that love is a "crazy game" in which two people vow to stay together, but the future is uncertain and the road ahead is full of mystery.
The idea that "all is fair in love" suggests that even though love can be unpredictable and difficult, it's still worth pursuing. The singer acknowledges that they had to leave their partner at some point, but they regret that decision and wish they had stayed by their side.
The lines "all of fate's a chance, it's either good or bad, I tossed my coin to say, in love with me you'd stay" suggest that the singer took a risk in pursuing the relationship, but ultimately it didn't work out. The lyrics also suggest that love can be like a battlefield, with a winner and a loser, but the singer acknowledges that "all in war is so cold" and that losing can be painful.
The final lines of the song suggest that the singer is a writer who is using their pen to reflect on the nature of love and the lessons learned from their experiences. The phrase "all in love is fair" is repeated several times, emphasizing the idea that even though love can be difficult and unpredictable, it's still worth pursuing and cherishing. Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the highs and lows of love, and the importance of appreciating and valuing the people we love.

Stevie Wonder did the original. However, it was covered several times. Barbra Streisand, Cleo Laine, Billy Eckstein and Nancy Wilson did it in 1974. In 1975 Dionne Warwick and Shirley Bassey covered it. In 1976 Brook Benton covered it. Carmen McRae covered it in 1982. Slide Hampton did an instrumental cover in 2002. And, most recently, Michael McDonald covered it in 2003 for his album "Motown." Stevie Wonder had this song as the "B" side to his single "Too High."

Stevie Wonder is one of only three artists in GRAMMY history to win Album Of The Year three times in his career. The albums were: Innervisions (1973), Fulfillingness' First Finale (1974) and Songs in the Key of Life (1976). When Paul Simon accepts the GRAMMY for Album Of The Year for "Still Crazy After All These Years" (1975) at the 18th GRAMMY Awards on Feb. 28, 1976, Paul Simon said upon winning his award, quote: "Well, I'm very happy to win this. I want to thank Phil Ramone, who co-produced this with me. And Phoebe Snow who sang along with me on the album. And Art Garfunkel who sang with me on "My Little Town." And most of all I'd like to thank Stevie Wonder, who didn't make an album this year."

Naw, you made perfect sense. And yeah, that feeling of I've never heard this, but it just feels like it should have been in my life all along. Well said. And I do also love that combination of just beautiful and romantic but also tragic and he's just got so much soul in his voice and he's just such an amazing character.
I'll tell you what my favorite one of his is which is just a huge contrast, and I mean I like tons of his stuff. I think it's because it's the first one that I really fell in love with on the radio as a little kid. Well maybe I had heard Signed Sealed Delivered before this, but he had one in the early seventies that was a big hit and I absolutely love it to this day. And it will make you want to dance so badly. It's called, Boogie on Reggae Women. It's got the most intense synth bass on it and piano and all the layers just kill. And really to me it's kind of poignant because it talks about wishing he can see people nude under the stars above or wishing he could see people move across the dance floor and fall in love, and of course he was blind. But mostly it is just funky as hell and it just makes you want to move your body.

Its a shame for The Spinners, Try Jah's Love for Third World, Tell me something good for Rufus, not to mention his classic albums Music on my Mind, Talking Book, Fulfillingness First Finale, InnerVisions, Songs in the key of Life, and Hotter than July. Not only this song, but this entire album is a MASTERPIECE! And then he followed with yet another masterpiece with the album "Fulfilling His First Finale." And his career reached his peek when he released his 3rd masterpiece album in a row, "Songs In The Key Of Life!" Don't get me wrong, he had great albums before these and continued to have great albums all the way through the 80's but these 3 were his absolute best and of course those came out early to mid-70's - the greatest decade of music, everything from A through Z --- AL (GREEN) through to (LED) ZEPPELIN!
