This whole album is a work of art. Love 1970's Stevie. You're spot on with his work being real and raw for this time. He worked with some amazing musicians. Great reaction
This album is a masterpiece start to finish. The more you listen, the better it gets... Stevie played all the instruments. It's a very deep album all the way through. And you're right, there's tons of jazz influence in this track in the instruments, structure, and the chord voicings. Great reaction.
Every year 1968 to 1982, Stevie Wonder put out another great album! He's his own genre. He keeps making music, those are just my favorite ten or so records. SO GOOD!
"He's his own genre."😂 Love that! It's true. He also played most of the instruments on some songs, and all of them on others. Back in those days, junkies were known to leave their friends who overdosed in the shooting galleries they used.
Listening to this today as compared to when it was released, the musicianship sounds so complex, so creative as compared to today's popular music. Back in the day we were just like, "Well, that's Stevie."
In my humble opinion this is Stevie’s best work, his best album. And that’s saying something. Even in 2022 I’m still listening to this album like it’s brand new. Plus he was born in my hometown of Saginaw Michigan ,989 stand up!
This entire album is definitely a classic - best to give a listen to all tracks. Genius songwriting and at the peak of his creativity and powers. “Golden Lady”, “He’s Misstra Know It All”, and the hits: “Living for the City”, “Don’t You Worry Bout a Thing”, “Higher Ground”.
Asia & BJ, favorites include “Sir Duke”, “Superstition”, “Don't You Worry 'bout A Thing”, “ My Cherie Amour” and 28 more! Stevie is who the greatest of all-time call the greatest of all-time! Too High is from one of his 3 Grammy Albums of the Year!!
This is an amazing song with stevie playing everything on it (keys, bass synth, drums, harmonica) it's taken from an amazing album called innervisions which, imo, is his best piece of work!
Now this is a classic. I love the way he says her world's a superficial paradise. The way he says paradise. Will you please react to Don't Disturb This Groove by The System?
The master that’s Stevie Wonder… He’s very musically inclined, great musician, great lyrics… And one heck of a concert! I was lucky to see him twice in the 70s and 80s. A very talented man.
During the early 7o's, Stevie Wonder mined his best and career defining material after winning his battle with Motown to produce and guide his path away from the Motown Sound of the 196o's. He along with Marvin Gaye were wanting to grow and express themselves like musicians from the Woodstock era. To create music rather than be part of an assembly line. Stevie also made use of the Moog synthesizers sound and range to make the albums, MUSIC OF MY MIND, TALKING BOOK, INNERVISIONS, and completed his classic run with the double album SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE. With some help from Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouloff, Wonder played most the instruments on his records that highlights his genius. Checkout these diverse songs. BOOGIE ON REGGAE WOMAN, YOU HAVEN'T DONE NOTHING, YOU ARE THE SUNSHINE OF MY LIFE, SIR DUKE, I BELIEVE (WHEN I FALL IN LOVE, IT WILL BE FOREVER) & LIVING IN THE CITY. So much music, so much love, so little time. Better get started. Enjoy.
Stevie Wonder in early to mid 70's was just unreal, so much great creative music, just an outburst. Unbelievable. He played all the instruments on a bunch of these albums too, amazing. Right at end of reaction you said you haven't heard anything off Innervisions, so you really should do Higher Ground and Living for the City. Hard to miss off that album really.
Well yea Stevie is a true musician. He's recorded entire albums where he played all instruments I think. So yea I think you're right I think he can speak through instruments very effectively even without singing. Maybe to him his voice is just another instrument.
Wife here..INCREDIBLE MUSICIAN!!!...I feel like this song is sort of a "deep cut" from him...Sooo cool for U2 to react too..Jazzy for sure!!!..And that harmonica...Off the chain..The instrumentation is OUTSTANDING ON THIS SONG..
Stevie Wonder was a child prodigy who signed with Motown at the age of 11, where he was given the professional name "Little Stevie Wonder". He covered many genres of music such as R&B, pop, soul, gospel, funk & jazz. He has a lot of hits such as "Superstition", "I Just Called To say I Love You", "Uptight (Everything's Alright)", "I Was Made To Love Her", "For Once In My Life", "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours", "My Cherie Amour", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", "Higher Ground", "Living For The City", "Sir Duke", "Isn't She Lovely?" etc.
Another thing that was great back in the 70's besides the music were the radio stations! You would hear Stevie, Zepplin, Doobies, Temptations, Eagles and even maybe a little Elvis on one station. It's a pleasure to see you guys enjoying what we grew up with!
To really appreciate the music of the 70’s , you need to experience it the way we did. We had LP’s ( long playing) format. We listened to the whole album. It was to much to keep jumping up and down to move the needle. Plus moving the needle was a good way to scratch your record. I know I was too mellow to want to keep changing the song. By the way Stevie wrote, arranged and produced as well as played most of the instruments on his albums.
YES; the GREAT Stevie Wonder!!!! Please 🙏 react to his song “AS”; it’s R&B Poetry! So much great music from this man; Sir Duke, Don’t You Worry Bout A Thing, Boogie On Reggae Woman, I Wish, so much more 😊
I get what your trying to say Asia , I picture a smoky bar when the players on stage doesn’t need to sing just play what the music makes them feel, JMO.
If you're doing songs from this album "Golden Lady" is simply a MUST! "Living In The City" as well. "Higher Ground" is a killer track. Surely you've already done "Superstition"? Oh hell, this whole album is great, and a classic for good reason!
Asia you NEED to listen to his album “The Journey Thru the Secret Life of Plants” it is an overlooked gem of his the flew below the radar - listen to “The First Garden” harmonica so moving it wells me up when I listen to it ♥️♥️
Stevie! My absolute favorite.😎 If you haven’t heard anything from his “Music in my mind” release, that would be much appreciated! 🙏🏼 You 2 are GREAT! 😃
Hey if you two want to hear a lot of the vocal inflections that Michael Jackson incorporated into his style, then chcek out Stevie's song "Maybe Your Baby". Stevie sings all the parts of the song, including the backup parts.
Too High is about drug abuse, one of the few times Wonder dealt with the subject. While the songs on Innervisions are largely in the genres of soul and funk, "Too High" has a definite ring of jazz fusion to it. Perhaps garnishing the arrangement like a sprig of parsley, even a hint of Bebop. The song is driven home starkly with its menacing Moog bass, sinister distorted chorus vocals, nightmarishly surreal lyrics, piercing scat singing, shrill harmonica solo, frequent jazzy harmonic dissonances, a bleak Fender Rhodes interlude close to the end just after the woman dies, and its glacial a capella coda.
Try ‘Boogie on Reggae Woman’ or ‘Don’t You Worry Bout A Thing’, ‘Sir Duke’. He has so many greats. I grew up with this music - started listening at 11 (1973) - and I have never heard of ‘Too High’. Definitely not the one I would have selected for your first Stevie Wonder experience.
Stevie is another legend. I still suggest his "Ribbon In The Sky" and "Stay Gold" from The Outsiders Motion Picture Soundtrack. That's my movie suggestion yall :)
Innversions, Music In My Mind, Jungle Fever, Secret Life Of Plants, Characters are my faves Songs In The Key of Life and Talking Book get the acclaim but not my fave They have their moments but doesnt hold me for the whole album
Asia, BJ: I'm not sure "raw" is the correct way to describe this track. "Raw" in what sense? The arrangement? Instrumentation? Lyrically? Recording? Hearing Innervisions when it first came out in 1973 that was not the word that sprang to myy mind. Innovative, sure. Jazzy? Superb, certainly. BTW You need to listen to Innervisions as a whole. Too long to react to, but treat yourself.
I love me some Stevie but this is not one of my favorites of his. "I Just Called to Say I Love You," "Superstition," "As," "Happy Birthday" so many more.
“Innervisions” one of the greatest albums in music history 👍❤️

Every year 1968 to 1982, Stevie Wonder put out another great album! He's his own genre. He keeps making music, those are just my favorite ten or so records. SO GOOD!
Maybe the best pop artist ever. MJ and Stevie are on another level.

Inner Visions is a GLORIOUS ALBUM!
The master that’s Stevie Wonder… He’s very musically inclined, great musician, great lyrics… And one heck of a concert! I was lucky to see him twice in the 70s and 80s. A very talented man.
Genius...this is straight up jazz. Stevie could do it all.

One of the rare songs in popular music that makes use of 'whole tone chords'.
Memories abound on this album.
Top Shelf material .

His 5 or 6 albums from around this time in career are masterpieces. Thanks for doing Stevie Wonder.
Stevie Wonder is truly the “Master Blaster” & the legend of all legends 🤙😎👍
Ah man, I played the heck outta this album. He was a one man band. Yeah. Peace
To really appreciate the music of the 70’s , you need to experience it the way we did. We had LP’s ( long playing) format. We listened to the whole album. Check out "Living For The City" by Stevie on Inner Visions and you won't be sorry, that track is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I am sure Jay Kay would agree, but I can hear from this song, some of where Jamiroquai got influenced.

Definitely a FUSION jam. Also, one of the very rare songs on popular music that incorporates whole tone chords.
Master Blaster I think he plays every instrument on this track
If you're doing songs from this album "Golden Lady" is simply a MUST! "Living In The City" as well. "Higher Ground" is a killer track. Surely you've already done "Superstition"? Oh hell, this whole album is great, and a classic for good reason!

I became an instant fan when I first heard “Master Blaster” ✊️😁
Stevie's a true legend.
Stevie is a master at using jazz harmony and still be considered a "pop" artist...
Now you know how Jamiroquai was influenced 😉
Check out LIVING FOR THE CITY😀
Stevie Wonder is a musical genius IMO....

When Paul Simon won the Emmy for record of the year, he thanked Stevie for not releasing a record that year.
Lol

Could you please react to Stevie’s Ribbon in the Sky💕☮️
I remember smoking a big doobie with my uncle and listen to the song for the first time
He's really experimenting here. Taking the time to go to new places rather than trying to make a hit
I love me some Stevie but this is not one of my favorites of his. "I Just Called to Say I Love You," "Superstition," "As," "Happy Birthday" so many more.
That’s Stevie playing the drums…. No drummer
