This one is absolutely stunning. All may be fair in love, but is it really fair that Stevie can sing so amazingly well, as well as write such brilliant songs, arrange them, produce them and play so many of the instruments too? Outrageous talent. A gorgeous song.

Stevie says "I had to go away", and "I should have never left your side". Seemingly during his absence his mate has found another. That's pretty sad, and here his heart is clearly broken. In this song Stevie is saying the phrase may be a cliche, but if something happens repeatedly it's a truism, not a cliche. Especially if it happens to you. As one person below has said, this is a tough song to listen to after a breakup. For another achingly beautiful song by Stevie listen to "Overjoyed" the lyrics of which are more clever as he uses certain allusions and plays with them over this beautiful melody.

Thank you for sharing your insights on the song "All is Fair in Love" by Stevie Wonder. You are right that the song is a reflection on the pain of heartbreak and the regret that can come from leaving someone you love. The lines "I had to go away" and "I should have never left your side" suggest that the singer made a mistake in leaving their partner, and that they are now facing the consequences of that decision.
The use of the phrase "all is fair in love" adds to the emotional intensity of the song, as it suggests that sometimes love can be cruel and unpredictable. The repetition of this phrase throughout the song emphasizes its importance to the singer, and suggests that they are trying to come to terms with the complexities of love and loss.
As you mentioned, "All is Fair in Love" is a tough song to listen to after a breakup, as it speaks to the pain and regret that can come from losing someone you love. However, it's also a testament to the power of love and the importance of cherishing the people we love while we have them.
Thank you also for recommending "Overjoyed" as another beautiful song by Stevie Wonder. The song's clever lyrics and beautiful melody make it a classic in Stevie's discography, and a testament to his talent as a songwriter and musician.

I found Innervisions in my dad's record collection when I was 15. That shit changed my life. I battle between this one and Mistra Know It All as my favorite.

Probably my favorite Stevie song - I think the sound is intentional, it’s the way I’ve always heard it. “I Believe When I Fall in Love this Time it Will be Forever” is another good one.

No. It's both a love song and a song of loss. One of the most beautiful ballads ever within a masterpiece of an album. One of the greatest of all time, in my not so humble opinion.

Oooh Stevie's voice just soars to the sky. I saw him in London about 82 I think; obviously he was wonderful. In this song I think the voice was more important because of the lyrics. He makes it very melancholy and not a song to listen to if you just broke up though!

The song "All is Fair in Love" is a reflection on the complex nature of love and the challenges that can arise in a romantic relationship. The lyrics suggest that love is a "crazy game" in which two people vow to stay together, but the future is uncertain and the road ahead is full of mystery.
The idea that "all is fair in love" suggests that even though love can be unpredictable and difficult, it's still worth pursuing. The singer acknowledges that they had to leave their partner at some point, but they regret that decision and wish they had stayed by their side.
The lines "all of fate's a chance, it's either good or bad, I tossed my coin to say, in love with me you'd stay" suggest that the singer took a risk in pursuing the relationship, but ultimately it didn't work out. The lyrics also suggest that love can be like a battlefield, with a winner and a loser, but the singer acknowledges that "all in war is so cold" and that losing can be painful.
The final lines of the song suggest that the singer is a writer who is using their pen to reflect on the nature of love and the lessons learned from their experiences. The phrase "all in love is fair" is repeated several times, emphasizing the idea that even though love can be difficult and unpredictable, it's still worth pursuing and cherishing. Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the highs and lows of love, and the importance of appreciating and valuing the people we love.

I can't believe I'm going to quote Pat Benatar lyrics (but your conversation made me think of this and I can't stop myself) - she famously sang "Love is a Battlefield".

The bass was there too. The ‘blend’ seems appropriate, considering what the song conveys. I think the emotion of the song is related to how you’re affected. Passion is prominent in Stevie’s delivery. If he’s singin that song to you because he left you, might determine how sad or or not invested emotionally one is affected by the song.

Many cover Stevie's songs but the original just can't be beat.
There is only one other person who covered this that did a pretty good job, that was Nancy Wilson.

I don't agree... its the irony of that statement. In the beginning he is saying in that first verse that when you start out in marriage you just are so in love and its so present but as time moves on and the stress builds and each of you experiences changes you never thought about your perspective changes and you may grow apart. And maybe as you didn't see that coming you were not ready for it and lack the strength and understanding to deal with it and you grow estranged. Hindsight is always 20 20 folks and when you see that relationship at a distance you may realize you could have tried harder to save it. He obviously came to that conclusion long after they said goodbye. So to me this is a very sad song the irony of all is fair in love means when you are hurting and you believe the one you live caused it you will fight back with everything you have... damn divorce is ugly. When the vows are taken you are swooning but when it comes down to splitting it all apart it gets nasty.
