I put 95,000 miles on a 2016 Prius in the span of 2 years when I had a 4+ hour round-trip daily commute (over 200 miles per day to and from work). It was a fantastic car for that mission, and I routinely averaged about 50 mpg in all freeway driving under some pretty terrible, windy, hilly conditions. The maintenance costs were the lowest of any vehicle I've ever owned. It was roomy, comfortable, and a great commuter & road trip car. I actually miss having a Prius. I appreciate your enthusiasm for the Prius...they're excellent cars.
The Toyota hybrid eCVT is great because it behaves like an CVT should. Linear, constant power delivery at any speed with no fake shifting. Drive a regular CVT and a hybrid eCVT back to back and you'll see how much better the hybrid system is.
Another fact for people who don't know is that Toyota's eCVT is much more reliable than the belt/chain type CVTs you find in non-hybrid cars. It's two electric motors and a planetary gear set, and it's about as bulletproof as can be.
@@e70_x5_guy4 believe it or not, speed is not the only thing that makes a car good. The Prius has no need to be fast, it’s just not what it’s built for.

Fantastic fuel economy, bulletproof reliability, very low cost of ownership, roomy and comfortable. I'm all about paying cash for used (not old) cars from private parties, but beware... The problem with buying a used Prius is that the battery doesn't last forever. Look for one that has had it's battery replaced recently, and make sure it's an original or high quality battery or else they won't hold a charge as well. Surprised about the handling. Our main car is a hybrid auris and it’s great in many ways but the handling is really vague and floaty. Will have to try the Prius at some point.
We have a 2016 Prius and the throttle response with the electric motors in the city is much better than several more powerful gas cars I’ve had like a Mk7 GTI dual clutch and Volvo S60 T6. Both of those cars were fairly fast but throttle tip in sucked on both.
My Gen 3 with combined 130hp has more power than my 1990 Honda with 140hp. The Honda struggled with AC on and going up mountains, the Prius is just a dream for an economy (somewhar luxury) car.
You're seriously underestimating the efficiency capability of the 4th gen prius. Hypermiling won't get you anywhere near 52 or 53 MPG. Try 70 or 75 if you drive conscientiously, and 80-85 in completely perfect conditions.
If you like the Prius, you'll like the Corolla Sedan Hybrid even more. It has the same drivetrain as the Prius, and looks like a normal car inside and out.
They do it to save money. It’s so they can sell it in the US market and European markets etc without having to change too much. Cheaper for Toyota, more annoying for potential buyers.
Have you driven the Corolla Hybrid? it's cheaper than the Prius, gets the same gas mileage, should handle as well (same platform), and is a more pleasing car shape. Can't help but wonder if it deserves more attention than it's gotten, which is basically none.
during End of Year Toyotathon I had a supersonic red unit MSRP at $31,554 for $25,446, but eventually bought the PRIUS PRIME LE (a plug in Hybrid). Toyota had $4000 cash back and there was an additional $4508 income tax credit remaining on this type car for 2020 taxes under electric automobile itemized. That car I got for MSRP $29,899 for $23,434, plus my trade in. Cannot complain. Only issue....it takes over 5 hrs to electric battery recharge first 25 miles next trip.
At $30,000 this would compete - for those not completely *obsessed* with fuel economy - with the fantastic new Civic Hatchback in an up-level trim. And even *that* would likely average well-into the 30-40 mpg range, with much more power, a nicely designed and outfitted interior, and much more cargo space (not to mention, a more attractive exterior). Toyota needs to up their game with the next Prius or let it die an honorable death and be replaced by the Corolla Hybrid.
My beloved 2008 top on the line Prius has started to decline. I am getting ready to test drive a 2021 "2020 anniversary edition." Would go for a 2023, but I'm told they won't arrive until spring or summer ...
The 20th anniversary NEEDED more done to it. It has a different paint scheme and badging, but in 20 years the Prius has done some incredible things. Disappointed they did not embrace the history more (like bringing the solar panels out from the third gen models that are pretty rare to find now).
It does not matter whether those Chargers or Mustangs was aware of that you are racing with them, because they will lose after two years, and you will not be seeing them in your rear view mirror anymore after five years.

We have a 2016 Prius and the throttle response with the electric motors in the city is much better than several more powerful gas cars I’ve had like a Mk7 GTI dual clutch and Volvo S60 T6. Both of those cars were fairly fast but throttle tip in sucked on both.
IMO the Prius’s styling is better than the Corolla especially with the touring package.
My Gen 3 with combined 130hp has more power than my 1990 Honda with 140hp. The Honda struggled with AC on and going up mountains, the Prius is just a dream for an economy (somewhar luxury) car.
And I would like to point out that anyone can replace a Prius battery for $1K only Telsa and Elcerfiied garage can replace a Telsa battery for $22k...
7:45 jeez, that seems like a lot of road noise on the highway
It’s like 121 horsepower if that it’s going to be loud
For some reason I absolutely hate the "Everything's in center" look. Just give a goddamn dash I can see through the steering damn it.
Best car for people who don't care what they drive.
I have a 2018 and I get 60 mpg, it's all in the right foot
I could manage low 40s
Topher, you should try to find a 2001 or 2002 Prius first-gen to drive and do a POV. They are interesting little cars.
I’m going to be taking my drivers test in this gen.
I was waiting and waiting but the "SPIRITED" diving section never played in the video...Was wondering if that was an oversite on your part?
It does not matter whether those Chargers or Mustangs was aware of that you are racing with them, because they will lose after two years, and you will not be seeing them in your rear view mirror anymore after five years.
My dream is to buy a prius, take it to a track and block everyone to a highway speed limit.
Watching this after the reveal of the 2023 Prius. That statement at 7:33 did not age well, and thank goodness!
Dealer: How ugly want your car?
Guy: Yes.
Wow, "old school" cruise control stalk like you see on some older Corolla models (my 2016 Scion iM has such a control stalk).
