Less Than Jake reactions
Less Than Jake - "The Science of Selling Yourself Short"
This.
I was getting ready to suggest the same thing
Such an awesome song 🎵
So good
So much good stuff tbh. Time and a Hald, Wish Pig, Liquor Store, Sobriety is our business and business isn't doing so well, Jay Frenzal... Jesus I could go on LOVE Less Than Jake
I love how he compliments the singer and bass player and he doesn't realize they are the same person. So cool. Love this video.
Lima is a beast!! 🤘🏼
I can barely believe someone is reacting to Less Than Jake, let alone someone this educated and accomplished. Love it!
Need more LTJ reactions on this site
@@MySackSweat Eh one is enough lol
True love you and I. I got you if you ever come this way.
This was a very pleasant surprise. Keep em comin
He should do more of their songs. Such a great band! I remember playing GTA III and replacing one radio station's audio files with only Less Than Jake MP3s, man what a great game it became!
Roger Lima slaps that bass SO HARD while singing like an ANGEL! He is an amazing talent truly
Roger!!!!!!
Roger that!!!
this is an old comment, but yeah, Roger cooks. But we all know SK is full of amazing bass players. Joe Gittelman, and Matt Wong, just to name a couple more.
he's also singing the lead vocals for this one too :D
Look What Happened, that Less Than Jake song always makes me want to grab my skateboard and pretend I’m not an old man. Always puts a smile on my face.
yes!!! Definitely Look what happened!!!!!!! And last time I grabbed my skateboard I broke my arm, they still make me feel like I am not an old man too
I second "Look what happened" - but it HAS to be the one on Borders and Boundaries, and not the one on Anthem.
Grind.
@@drty09brd that movies soundtrack is perfect.
Same! My fave LTJ song 🤘
The whole album "Hello Rockview" is basically perfect. Although I've been listening to the album since it came out and have a lot of fond memories associated with it.
First album I ever purchased. Love it.
Any song on the record just instantly transports me back to the bus coming home from high school
Such a good cd!!
Amen
First one I purchased also and it's a masterpiece
For more ska, try Streetlight Manifesto next! Probably the song "We Will Fall Together"
I second Streetlight Manifesto!!
Perfect song
Dude, I’ve been trying to get every reaction channel I can find to react to Streetlight Manifesto for years. They are one of the best bands I’ve ever heard and they’re truly under appreciated.
I’m just commenting to give streetlight some love
How about Catch 22?
Kudos, Mr. Geebz. Less than Jake is a reminder that music can be fun. That musicians dont all play for the dollar. "The Science of Selling Yourself Short" and "9th and Pine" are great tracks also
I agree
But LTJ definitely have a serious side to them in some of their songs
- The rest of my life being 1 example
And then they have “I don’t give a flying f*** music” with tracks like Plastic Cup Politics
@@Ober1kenobi totally, the seriousness comes in their lyrics that in this case as he's stated he's ignoring. Even this song has some pretty serious lyrics about not judging people by one aspect of their personality and being more open minded.
These are both perfect picks and I was coming here to say the same thing. Honestly though for me, so.much of LTJ is about experience, for the past 20+ years they have been every where with me and I can tie seeing them live from coast to coast to other important parts of my life. The records are just keepsakes from amazing live performances.
107 and my very own flag are my favourites but Scott farcus takes it on the chin and history of a boring town showed me as a frustrated bass player that bass could be fun and enjoyable.
If you want fun I recommend the aussie band Troldhaugen. Start with BMX Terminator and if you manage to avoid cracking a smile I'll be mightily impressed haha.
Not only does this song SLAP, but it has a great message: "Don't judge anyone before you get to know them, because you might miss out on a friend."
Brings me back to middle school. Ska and punk were mainstream. Different times.
Lol I was thinking the exact same thing!
Kids now days will never know such good music.
@@drewp.weiner5708 I've seen their taste in music. It's not good.
@@VidmanBarca89 Ik it's a late reply, but it's kinda hard to generalize a WHOLE generations taste of music, and from what I've seen usually they listen to most genres across generations. So unless all music generally sucks I doubt that's true
I’m almost 52 years old. Grew up in Orange County CA. I love SKA. I think it’s the Brass instruments that I like most.
I also can't help but smile when listening to Ska music. If you enjoy Ska, I hope you check out Streetlight Manifesto. "Kristina, She don't know I Exist", "Point/Counterpoint", "A Moment of Silence", and "A Moment of Violence" are some personal favorites.
seconding Streetlight Manifesto, would love to see that on the channel
My favorite band! Probably listened to Everything Went Numb more than 50 times
I third Streetlight Manifesto. The song I would recommend is Down, Down, Down to Mephisto’s Cafe
YESSSSSS!!!!!!
Would looove to see a streetlight reaction, I’ll throw their tracks The Three Of Us or If Only For Memories in the ring for something later in the catalogue
Known a couple of the members of LTJ since high school. They moved up to Gainesville thereafter and the rest is history. They've been crushing it for going on 30 years and they've earned every drop of their success. Ridiculously caring and down to earth bunch of guys, and every member a huge talent unto themselves.
I’ve followed you mostly for Tool but LTJ was one of my favorite bands in high school, they’re just so much fun I love them
Its impossible to listen to Less than Jake and not just smile. They are so much fun.
I'm 40 years old and I LOVED these guys when I was a kid. Almost booked them for a show once. Keep doing what you're doing Geebz. Love to you and yours.
42, following since in high school in central Florida. 🤘
I love your expressions from 1:31 to when the horn kicks in
"the intro seems cool". Then the lyrics start and you're like "wtf is this?" and then its as if you notice the bass "whoa, thats cool.". And then the horn kicks in and you smile, realizing you love it.
After my first initial comments I thought I'd give some insight on the band. Something that makes Less Than Jake interesting is that they actually have two vocalists. Roger Lima is not only the vocalist on this song, but he is also the bass player! Chris Demakes is their other vocalist and also plays guitar. A song that I would check out with him as lead vocal is Nervous in the Alley. Another interesting fact is that the lyrics are from the drummer on most of their songs except for the newest album. His name is Vinnie Fiorello. What I think makes Less Than Jake very interesting is that they are somewhere between pop punk and ska punk. I think the album that shows this the best is Anthem. I think both Hello Rockview and Anthem are my two favorite albums by them and it depends on the day which one is my favorite. As someone that listens to ska almost daily I'm really excited for more. I think it'd be really interesting if you looked at ska through the years. When most people hear ska they just think of the third wave Ska punk scene from the 90s and early 2000s, but ska originated in Jamaica in the 60s. The second wave of Ska is very fascinating. There's some really good two tone second wave ska coming out of Britain in the '80s that would be fun for you to look at. I really hope we get more of you going down the ska rabbit hole.
Thanks for this man. Agreed, metal heads is a great song but would have preferred something that showcases Roger and Chris’ formidable harmonising talents, maybe Goodbye Mr Personality or something like that
Have you been checking out Chris Demakes a Podcast?
@@MarshTheDarsh I've checked out a couple of episodes, but there's just so many things to listen to I have not been keeping up with it. Thanks for the reminder I should definitely listen to more because I enjoyed it
@@FluidAsTheRiver yea I hear that, would take more than this lifetime to listen to everything you wanted lol. Good episode the other day, Chris and Jim Atkins from Jimmy Eat World discussing The Middle (a band Geebz should definitely react to if he hasn’t already)
The Ghosts of Me and You is one of my favourite tracks off Anthem. I remember seeing them play live and Roger climbed the rigging and hung upside down for an entire song while he sang.
For more ska punk stuff, Goldfinger "Here in Your Bedroom", "Mable", and "Answers" of their self-titled album... Also "Superman", for the Tony Hawk Pro Skater Fans.
Edit: The cover of "Take On Me" was actually Reel Big Fish... Getting old.
Take on me Ska Punk cover came from Reel Big Fish
@@kurnhurin4118 yep, edited my response. Thanks man.
I'm all in with your selection here still... thinking about what the Geebz does for the kids, his taste for catchy songs and his enthsiasm for ska music we must not forget about the Aquabats (Shark Fighter anyone?) or the so powerfull Toasters and songs like Weekend In L.A. and Talk Is Cheap! Man Geebz gotta give'em a try, sure he'll appreciate!
@@fonkypouley5759 totally agree with the Aquabats... "Super Rad" literally has the characters from Yo Gabba Gabba in it.
@@mbk337 That's what i frlt too, this is so obvious!
Do Streetlight Manifest! Somewhere in the Between!
anything by streetlight would be great
Agreed! If he liked the layers in this song, he'd get real kick out of pretty much any Streelight Manifesto song.
If you wanna talk composition, I'd lean towards 'If only for memories". personally, i think "they broke him down' has the best breakdown i've ever heard, but overall, IOFM has a great complex melody that could be properly appreciated by a composer.
So happy you dig this. LTJ are legends at this point. They have many great records, but Hello Rockview is my personal favorite. Roger Lima is a bass god and he’s the one singing on this too. Hope we hear more and more Ska. Ska now more than ever!
I should also mention if you want to geek out about horn arrangements, bands like the Blue Meanies (Jazz, punk, metal, ska) or Streetlight Manifesto (Ska punk with classical Eastern European influence in the arrangements) are amazing.
@@zatransis Streetlight is fucking incredible, and sadly nobody knows who they are lol
@@drysiftwizard3469 Haha... yeah. In the Ska world they’re royalty, but it’s true. Outside of that no one knows. That goes for most Ska bands, tbh.
@@zatransis Love the Blue Meanies. I lived in Atlanta in the late 90's early 2000's. I remember seeing the Blue Meanies a few times in dive places in Little 5 and the Masquerade. Back in those days, before/after they played they just sat at tables around the place (were no more than 100 people there) You'd offer to grab one of them a beer and it meant nothing but just appreciation since you only paid a few dollars to get in anyways. The quality of that band is so unreal. I haven't listened in a while and I'm blown away again listening to the Full Throttle album
Awesome to see this! Glad you enjoyed it! You just happened to pick a song from what is arguably Less Than Jake's best album. Another great one from them is Gainesville Rock City!
Love your facial expressions in this one! Super fun song! You might dig Mighty Mighty Bosstones too
And Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
“The impression that I get“ is the one to go with!
The Science of Selling Yourself Short - Less Than Jake. Another great song with really heart felt lyrics
Man what a great day to be a follower. Doomsday and All My Best Friends Are Metalheads. Great tunes and great commentary as usual.
These guys are so fun live! Also just cause you mentioned how good the bass is. The singer plays bass too, he rocks. Do Streetlight Manifesto “Would You be impressed?” Awesome song and music video!
I absolutely love Less Than Jake! I am so excited that you are finally taking a look at them! I have some recommendations. Nervous in the Alley, Best Wishes to your Black Lung, The Ghost of Me and You, and the Science of Selling Yourself Short. This is just a jumping off point. Some ska punk related bands that I would highly recommend include Streetlight Manifesto, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Mustard Plug
Great reaction!
You should check out Mad Caddies, songs like Road Rash, Villains, State of Mind or Drinking For 11
I see a lot of people recommend Streetlight Manifesto, and you should totally check out "The LIttlest Things" or "They Broke Him Down"
Great Video as always!
You just made my day. LTJ is my favorite band of all freaking time and I don't think I've ever seen anyone do a reaction to them.
I'm seeing a lot of recommendations for Streetlight Manifesto and I completely agree. They probably have the most epic horn section in ska and their bass player is an absolute monster. "We Will Fall Together" or "Would You be Impressed" are both amazing.
The bass player is also the singer (for this track). I've seen them live twice, and it's astounding how he (Roger) just runs that bass, while doing vocals, like he's not even thinking about it.
Absolutely, I’m a bass player and just getting this bass line up to correct speed is a chore, I couldn’t even imagine singing while trying to play that.
Roger is the best!
I've always wondered that myself. I can't even play chords on a guitar and sing together and I graduated with a degree in music performance (not on guitar)🤣
roger lima is definitely my favorite bass player, he sang this song too and watching him shred the bass AND sing this song live is crazy!
Such a good video! You bring such a lovely energy to your videos, and to react to one of my favorite songs as a kid really a treat. Thanks for the video man! Keep it up!
PLEASE DO MORE SKA!!! I loved watching your expressions when the horns come in. Take a look at Streetlight Manifesto - We Will Fall Together
Some piers of these guys are the mighty mighty bosstones, goldfinger, voodoo glow skulls, reel big fish.
Each have different feels within the modern ska genre that was big back in the day.
There was even a nu-metal band called the urge that used horn section..
Thank you for that!! Recently found you videos and im really enjoying them
you would be pleased to know that Roger Lima, Brazilian punk rock bass and vocal legend, and longtime member of LTJ, actually plays that insane bass line while singing this epic tune.
It is also cool to notice that the band's original drummer and founder Vinnie Fiorello is the founder of Fueled By Ramen, one of the most iconic alt/emo record labels of the 00's. He sold the company to Warner a few years ago, and left the band in 2019. I had the privilege of supporting them with my band in Brazil on their last tour with Vinnie, their all amazing guys.
Roger is a monster player all around. His voice is so unique and inimitable, and his basslines are SICK.
This is my go to album when I'm feeling down! I started listening to this album when I was 14. Your channel is the coolest.
Man this was great! You know your stuff and it’s fun watching someone hear one of my fav bands for the first time
Hey, man. This is the first I've heard of your channel. Glad you like it! It's probably one of my top 10 favorite songs ever.
This video made what was otherwise a bummer of a morning into a much better one. Love LTJ and ska, and I used to play this track all the time on my radio show in college back in the early 00s. Thanks for this and all your videos!
EDIT: Wasn't able to finish the video earlier, and you asked for suggestions for LTJ tunes - "Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts", "Dopeman", "History of a Boring Town", "Look What Happened" (two versions of this, both good, but my preference is the one off of Anthem), "The Science of Selling Yourself Short". And if you want to continue down the checkered road of ska, I would love to see you tackle some Reel Big Fish. Awright!
So stoked to see your reactions during the song! Been a while since I've listened to LTJ but this vid has brought me back!
Roger's bass lines are absolutely magical. Incredible to think he also play that at the same time as singing!
The soundtrack to my late teens :)
This whole album kicks ass. So glad you enjoyed it. One of my favorite bands, hands down.
I love seeing a song that's made me smile so many times make someone new smile. Thanks, Geebz!
Thank you for doing this. LTJ was the first band I ever got to see in concert back in 98. They have remained one of my favorites for a long time. Great video.
If you want some great bass check out Maxwell Murder by Rancid. Matt Freeman is amazing.
Or Journey to the End of East Bay.
Rancid is epic live
Hell Yeah! This song was a big part of me growing up glad you enjoyed it!
Dat Digimon soundtrack is underrated af
I would love, love, LOVE to see you do a reaction to The Decline by NOFX. It's THE punk rock masterpiece.
I couldn’t agree more!
THIS!!!
This is awesome! I haven't listened to these guys in a long time. Awwwright!
"The Science of Selling Yourself Short" gotta be next. loved this type of reaction on the channel!
The live version with the horn section from RBF, The Bosstones and LTJ....
LOVE me some Less than Jake! So surprised to see this pop up on the channel and thats so awesome. Please do "The science of selling yourself short." Another great band is Reel Big Fish!
That little horn breakdown at the very end always gives me chills
Def memories of Jr. High.. been into these guys since about '94.. they still kick ass.
Ive had the privledge to catch these guys live several times they are very much worth evey penny of the ticket price. You will not leave dissapointed Less Tan Jake is the rel deal SKA PUNK !
Thanks for taking the time to share this amazing band.
Punk Ska is so fun live!!! I saw LTJ the first Time on Warped Tour 1997 and since then maybe 20 times... An old LTJ classic is Johnny Quest think we're sell out. Other Ska Punk classic is Reel big Fish - Sell Out and Goldfinger - Superman.
Just took my son to his first proper concert, we saw Less than Jake a couple weeks ago. They have been one of my favourite bands for a long time.
Never could understand how the bassist was able to play that bassline while still handling lead vocal duty aswell 🤯
I second Streetlight Manifesto! We Will Fall Together. Or do an extra long vid on With Any Sort of Certainty with the full band and acoustic versions from Streetlight and Toh Kay respectively.
Aloha \o/ Never heard about this band but I love that song. I'll definitely go for more. Thanks for introducing 🎸🤘😍 Oh, the link for the original video points to Architects - Doomsday. Cheers from Germany 🍻
I'm really enjoying the diversity of genres you are now covering. I'd love to see you react to more Ska Punk, It always puts a big smile on my face!
Fun review, great vibe on the channel, excellent song choice. Subbed!
This is a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 classic 👌
I've seen LTJ live more than any other band I follow. They always bring an amazing show and there is a surprising amount of depth and heart in their music.
Roger from LTJ is such an underrated musician, he lays down those bass riffs while singing which is just insane. He also runs his own studio fyi, not sure if this was recorded there but I guarantee he had input.
To add to such a fun and energetic ska section is Reel Big Fish!
Reel Big Fish are amazing!
Better than less than jake in my opinion.
Yes!
Or Mad Caddies - Leavin also comes to mind.
Streetlight Manifesto
Not the band I expected to see pop up on this channel but super glad to see it here. Gotta love ska-punk.
As an arranger, Streetlight Manifesto will blow your mind
One of my favourite bands for sure!
The Bass player (Roger Lima) also sings this song, they have 2 lead singers, both the bass player and the guitarist share the vocals between their songs and it helps add variety to their songs.
I've seen them at least 15 times here in the uk and they are always a blast live!
This band is the reason I started playing trombone in high school, I love them deeply.
Wow, great to see so many comments on this kind of band and punk in general (big fan of hardcore punk) and not just metal (also big fan). It really shows that this community is diverse and respectfull. Just wanted to point that out and say that you people are cool
This one was the jam, you would hear it at every alt/rock/punk night in the early to mid 2000s in the UK and the dancefloor would be packed
Oh, man, got so excited by this. My fav band broken down by one of my fav TH-camrs. That being said, I suggest the Borders and Boundaries version of “Look What Happened” or “The Brightest Bulb has Burned Out/Screws Fall Out”.
Great choice. This is an important step towards not being just like every other channel out there doing similar content. Thank you for being willing to take chances and explore different kinds of music.
The Science of Selling Yourself Short by Less Than Jake would an a good one to cover. I'll admit I'm biased as those are my 2 favorite songs by them.
Yes!!! I love these guys! Their live shows are always a great time.
This was so much, thanks for taking me back to high school. Man I loved ska. If you feel like trying a different ska band some time, I'd love to see your reaction to "Here In Your Bedroom" or "Mable" by Goldfinger.
Great recommendations! I heard Goldfinger for the first time on the X Games vol. 2 soundtrack from 1998. The song was Superman. I'll still put that one on when im feeling nostalgic.
One of the songs that made my education. I'm a King Crimson, ELP fan but this is my jam.
Roger Lima is an amazing bass player, and he's one of the band's main vocalists also. I love your reaction to the first time hearing these guys man! I've listened to them since I was 14 or 15 ish.. I'm 38 now. These guys are still a huge part of my life musically. I'm watching your protest the hero one next after this I want to see your reaction for those guys too.. I've known that band for quite some time too since 2004. A few changes since thier first two albums for sure. Thanks for what you do I just found you in my feed randomly and subbed lol
As someone from their hometown: Gainesville, FL, and seeing them before they were huge, AWESOME!
Worth noting that Roger, the bass player, is also singing. I’ve seen these guys a million times and Roger does all those runs live at THE SAME TIME AS SINGING LEAD. Classic! Love the channel!
you need to see them live because they are so much fun. Good video.
I Effing LOVE this song and Less than Jake in general, Thankyou heaps for this one
Geebz! You got me dancing in my living room freaking out my cat haha. My introduction to Less Than Jake was when my band opened for them at Pot Of Gold festival a couple years ago and damn they put on a good show. We were having a blast that day and you just took me back there for a minute, and I've been really missing all my band friends lately....
There's plenty of killer punk and ska out there. Check out The Interrupters, a band of 3 brothers (triplets I think...) and a badass frontwoman, Take Back The Power is a banger and has a cool music video.
If you want some wild bass playing check out Maxwell Murder by Rancid, my band covers it on nights when I feel like I can actually play it haha.
As always, great stuff my friend 🤘
2021: Geebz discovers skate/mall punk. Is delighted. :D :D :D
Thank you so much for this! Sincerely!
I consider myself the biggest LTJ fan in Pennsylvania, anyway. 20+ years since the mod 90's, height of the Ska/Punk wave and resurgence.
Some others to check out by them:
"Short Fuse Burning"
"Motto"
"Escape From the A-Bomb House"
"Liquor Store"
"My Very Own Flag"
"Look What Happened"
Many more
Sorry so lengthy
Rob
Brings me back to Jay High School class of 2003 baby! Ha! One of the best live shows out of dozens and dozens ive seen over the years. What a nice surprise Geebz and now you want more?! Alriiight!!! Id say anything off of the Hello Rockview album. That was a high school soundtrack of mine FOR SURE. Thanks man, spiral out 🙌
This was a pleasant surprise! My personal fave is Nervous in the Alley. also check out The Mighty Mighty Bosstones for more ska.
If you're looking for other genres, I'd love to see you do some R&B or soul music. Maybe something by Bill Withers.
I'm so happy to see this. I never expected to see Less Than Jake here, they have been my favorite band for over 20 years. They still tour to this day and are great live. This particular song Roger (Bass) is the main vocalist, but most songs the main singer is Chris (Guitar) with backups/harmonies from Roger. Here are a few more recommendations from a few different "eras" of LTJ (they've been around since '92) -- "Lockdown," "Scott Farcas Takes It On the Chin," "Plastic Cup Politics," "My Very Own Flag," "Escape from A-bomb House," and "Does the Lion City Still Roar?". You'll get the most clicks from "The Science of Selling Yourself Short" and "Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts" though.
Amazing song amazing band. Had many of bands like this on repeat while we were all out skating 🤟🤙
Other Less Than Jake songs you should check out are: Gainesville Rock City, Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts, Science of Selling Yourself Short, Nervous in the Alley, Magnetic North, and Sugar in Your Gas Tank.
This was exactly my first listening reaction! I could literally tell what you were thinking by your facial experiences haha.
Definitely puts a smile on your face!
love this reaction dude. have my sub
Wow!!! So awesome to watch someone listen to Less Than Jake for the first time and love it so much. Great band. A similar, but less jolly version is King Prawn, a UK band that do kind of Ska Punk with Drum and Bass mixed in and cockney accent - really unique sound! You should check those guys out too. 'Someone to hate' is excellent, as is 'No peace'.
This has been one of my most favorite songs for over twenty years. I love your review. One thing to point out: the guy playing the awesome bass line is also the singer for this song.
Would love to see you check out some more of this. LTJ really defined my late 90's college experience. Check out their Tracks Is This thing on?, My own flag, The science of selling yourself short, and history of a boring town. Streetlight Manifesto are a great ska act too.
Ska came in several waves, less than jake were part of the 3rd wave which is were punk came into it and was when the US got involved, the 1st wave happened in Jamaica in the 50's with the likes of the skatelites, then it came to the UK in the 70's and we got the 2nd wave or 2-tone ska with bands like the specials, madness, and the beat. I think it would be very interesting to see you react to something from each wave to see how it has progressed over it's lifespan.
Some more 3rd wave to check out though would include;
Less than jake - the science of selling yourself short
Streetlight Manifesto - Would you be impressed
The mighty mighty bosstones - someday i suppose
Goldfinger - superman
Discovered your channel and this video from r/ska today. Always love reaction videos on one of my favorite genres of music. If you plan on doing any other Ska style of bands in the future, I highly suggest checking out Streetlight Manifesto like so many other comments have suggested. Their technical skills will absolutely blow your mind.
some of my all time favorite hits of theirs include
-Here's To Life
-Keasbey Nights
-Somewhere In The Between
-One Foot on the Gas, One Foot in the Grave
-A Moment of Violence
Roger, the bass player also sings this one. Seen them playing live several times and watching him play and sing this is amazing.
I'm a year late, but here I am. This is the song that got me into Less Than Jake 20 years ago. They are still my favorite band. They bring an energy that I rarely see from other artists, and the live shows I've been to have been insanely hype, even though I don't like how they sound live. Their stage presence is just that good. And would you believe Roger, who plays bass and does back up vocals, learned to play just for the band? And they've had a different number of horn players over the years, and normally have two that are able to play multiple horns, so they get a lot of variety in there. And don't worry about the lyrics on this one. They don't make a whole lot of sense. And the intro soundbite is bleh.
I have seen them 4 times in central Florida. They are not studio artists and put on a hell of a show.
