I’m a Mighty Mighty Bosstones fan from a early age; horns, vocals, guitar, bass… I loved it all but when I was introduced to ales Than Jake, I started paying more and more attention to how unique horns can be and how they can “play along” with a song, enhance a song or go out on their own and blow it out of the water.
I was expecting something spooky for Halloween. Nekromantix when? Lol but I will always watch LTJ content. Love that band so much. Great breakdown as always.
The late 90s were a really special time for punk bassists, as you've discovered on this show. Love your content, and hearing that you were a horn player too further explains why I feel ...understood? when I watch your videos.
Thanks so much for the kind words! I've played trumpet longer than bass and forever have a soft spot for great brass playing, especially in rock. I couldn't get enough of bands like Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire as a kid.
Love your enthusiasm for these tracks. When you dip into the ska/punk, it is my playlist. What do you listen to so that you are able to come at these songs with such a fresh perspective?
This song is pretty much songwriting perfection. You hit on all the points that I’ve been thinking for years, from Roger’s voice to the dense melody at the end of the chorus.

Songs like Dangerous by Mad Caddies really give that same simplicity in the brass line... But make me think of pep band or field marching. Something that would be great for a local high school to pick up.
Still holds up as an awesome song. Love the lyrics and powerful energy as the song builds. Amazing! Less than Jake, Mustard Plug, DHC all takes me back to my teens, I'm an old man now but still love listening to this stuff.
So true I think I have seen Less than Jake maybe a few times more than Mustard Plug. I tried to catch them every time they came to Chapel Hill,NC or Atlanta back in the day. They always brings a smile when you hear them.
I'm a high school music teacher, but I kinda fell into teaching it. School needed a teacher and I was an English/History teacher who played in bands on weekends. Your videos have helped me understand the theory that I teach. It's helped me as a songwriter as well. Thank you.
Yay I’ve been waiting for this! Saw them a week ago last Saturday (it’s Saturday here in Australia). They are playing the album Hello Rockview as part of the tour as well as so other hits. But that’s my favourite album. Maybe coz it was the first album I heard of theirs. I’ll be voting for it! 🏁🏁
@@LowEndUniversity There are a lot of ska bands touring these days, its been making a huge resurgence in the more "mainstream" avenues. What city are you near because I bet you get at least one ska-punk band passing through a year.
Great video! Always a good time when you react to Ska Punk on the channel. Nothing lifts the moods quite like a jumpy bassline, catchy melodies, and a little brass haha
Time to check out Slapstick!!!! Pete Anna (less than Jake), Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio), Brendan Kelly (Lawrence Arms). It’s like a Low End U all star team!
Losing Streak was my first. Hello Rockview was my favorite. Borders & Boundaries and Anthem probably tie after that. I stopped listening around that time owning almost every album that came out until GNV FLA. There were a couple rarer/ hard to get ones I never really pursued. It was much harder to find stuff like that back then. I just remembered something. LTJ were doing this Street Team type thing that I signed up for. Nothing ever came to my house. I eventually wrote to them (mail) about it and they ended up responding. They sent me a response letter and some stickers and stuff like that if I remember correctly. It was a very long time ago. I also forget because my parents threw a lot of that stuff away (not maliciously, they were moving and didn’t know) and I haven’t seen it in so long.
A band you should definitely react to is All, its the descendents but with a different vocalist. A good album to react to is either Allroy Saves or Mass Nerder. Specific song tho is Vida Blue or She’s My Ex
Classic. I still think you should do “Trapped in box” by No Doubt. The bass line is crazy on that one. Also, some classic ska anthems would be good. Off the top of my head “One Step Beyond” by Madness. The bass isn’t super special, but it’s good. The brass on that one though. Whew! It was so popular for a reason.
Back in '98 my band had the pleasure of playing 2 shows with LTJ in Gainesville FL. We hung out with Roger the following day and went to his house. My guitar player and I played master of puppets with Roger playing the drums ( I was playing his bass, totally out of my element as I was the sax player in my band lol) It was a God tier moment in my life I will never forget. As LTJ was one of my favorite bands at the time it was truly a dream, just very surreal. What an amazing guy he is, and what a musician!
That point about his scooped tone is so right on- as I go back and transcribe the ska punk classics I feel like it’s hard to know what actual note is played sometimes. Killer ear!
Such a great song! I have only seen them 1 time and I was blown away by their performance! Authority Zero were the openers and set the tone for the night!(Authority Zero is absolutely amazing!) Then Less Than Jake came on and somehow one upped them! Real Big Fish was awesome, but I think I would have had one of the other 2 bands be the headliner.
This song was featured on the soundtrack to Digimon the Movie, the English dub of 3 Digimon OVAs edited into a single theatrical film release, which actually had a ton of Ska and Pop Punk on it.
My fav video of yours so far! My first comment here, because it’s one of my favorite songs ever written. To me, the intro guitar is iconic, I can play it over and over again for hours lol. But horns definitely are up there too!
Favorite less than jake song of all time! It's so cool to watch you experience these songs for the first time (or rediscover in this case) and appreciate them so much. Keep up the great work 🤙
Love your appreciation for the trombone! I feel like for third wave ska, in particular, trombone was the "iconic" horn in a way that it wasn't as much for earlier waves of ska, which were more trumpet or sax-forward. And I think it's for exactly the reason you identified - the tone of trombone is perfect for peppy, melodic lines that serve as agile counter-melodies to fast, often shouty lead vocals. In addition, I feel like the timbre of trombone matches the driving distorted guitars of ska-punk in a way that other horns don't always. If you want more trombone-based ska, by the way, you absolutely have to check out MU330. Their album "Crab Rangoon" featured an all-trombone horn section that is one of the most memorable and unique-sounding in third wave ska. Highly recommend checking out tunes like "Tune Me Out" or "Ireland."
That Street Sk8er soundtrack is what got me into Punk rock. I am a very awkward nerd. The first time I heard H20's Everready, and I heard someone singing about not letting other people's opinions get to them... Like that was huge
Happy birthday Dude! So many good memories with this album. So many Jake shows between St. Pete and Gainesville. Good vibes all around. Excellent song choice today, I needed a pick-me-up. Raj is an awesome guy too if you’re still thinking about having a bassist on to interview.
Cool thing about this song is my favorite artist (Ken Band/Ken Yokoyama) is releasing an album full of covers this month, and this is one of the songs that are gonna be featured in it
this was their first album on a major label (capitol records). their sound is much more refined on this album compared to their first 2 (or 3 if you include "losers, kings, and things we don't understand") earlier albums. i like some of their more recent songs, but i really prefer they stuff they made pre '99 or so. another thought - my dad would always play the oldies station on the radio back in the 80's. those songs were 25-35 years old, and they sounded that old. but this song is over 25 years old now, and it doesn't sound like it's that age. this song could come out tomorrow and we would all say "that new song from LTJ is pretty good."
Don't know if it's been suggested before but it's a must for ska. You should give a listen to Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. Songs SOS (for a more familiar sound) or Te quiero con bugalu (for something more of their usual sound). Their sound ranges from punk rock with more horns to jazzy sounding to big band sound to dancehall ska. And the bass is always good.
They're so great! And what about KEMURI??? Awesome bass lines and horns melodies, among my top 5 bands of all times....fun fact, the TSPO have a song with Kemuri's vocalist, Pride of Lions...check it out!

After decades of listening to music I've always said a decent brass section makes anything better. Punk, pop, rock, ska. Just pops everything up a notch. I think I've mentioned The Heavy before. Just so much adding to western rock with a simple horn line in some of their stuff.

I love this song - this came out while I was going through my first bout with depression; finding my local ska-punk scene helped me a lot with managing it and LTJ were one of my favourite bands from that era.
Hey Mark, I think a cool video for you to do would be to try and show people how to replicate Roger Lima's sound with your bass setup. In general, punk bass players tend to use lower gauge strings. However, beyond that, Lima definitely wants to have the brightest, punchiest sound possible. I assume this is so his 1000 different notes are always heard through the guitar and vocals. It's definitely a unique sound to me - one of the most fun punk bass sounds I can think of. Edit: Haha okay I just watched to the end. You called it out
I've considered some videos like that - we shall see! In reality it's just sort of a scooped tone which many players do, but I don't know, it just has a cool character to it, definitely one of those things that come from his hands too.
@@LowEndUniversityI'll watch some of Lima's vides on his channel where he's playing songs and try to see visually what he's doing. I remember when I was young, I tried to replicate Lima's sound by tweaking things on my amp and guitar, but I wasn't sure what I was doing back then.
Next to check out should be The Bar Stool Preachers - When The World Ends UK band influenced by Two-Tone rather than Ska (same same, but different) Karl 'Bungle' Jeffery is sky high on my favorite bassists, and I'm so glad I got to watch them while they were playing small clubs
Horns and especially trombone always enhances the rhythm n melodies of the guitars and bass in a good way. Such a distinct sound I guess. I always associate a trombone slide with ska and ol’ timey comedy slapstick bits. Great accented sound.
Roger has another band where he plays guitar and sings called Rehasher. He also has his own youtube channel where he does some play alongs and some cool live stuff. GoPros on his bass etc.
This album had my favorite horn lineup in any band: 2 trombones and a baritone sax. It's such a rich sound. Going back to the Street Sk8er soundtrack (which also was a big one for me), check out some H2O. Eveready was the song on the soundtrack, but bassist Adam Blake really started showing his true form on the next album, F.T.T.W. Notable bass tracks: Faster Than The World, Fading, Forcefield. I mean, the whole album is great, but those are the song's that first come to mind.
Idk if you have heard yet Skankin Pickle! Going down the ska rabbit hole leads to The Bruce Lee Band which is a mixture of less than jake and skankin pickle...epic!
2 more Ska Punk Bands to throw out here: Mustard Plug and Skankin Pickle. Partial to Mustard Plug's Beer and Skankin Pickles' Missed the Bus myself, but lots of great songs by both.
I'm surprised no one has suggested Mephiskapheles yet. Super rad satanic ska that skews more towards the jazzy-side. Break Your Ankle Punk from their album Maximum Perversion has a killer bassline
Ive seen the majority of the punk/ska/thrasher/hardcore wahtever bands youve covered and I tell ya what Less than Jake isnt my favourite but those guys fking rock the stage. A MAZZZING live
You should check out History of a boring town or Roger’s side project Rehasher. Rehasher not as much for the bass but just because it’s good. Rehasher-1st album 10/10
It‘s a song of my youth and I failed the first 5-6 years of my bass playing until I managed to recognize, that this is not about talent. It is about feeling it. Until today i can‘t play it perfectly, because Roger feels it more than I ever will
if you love less than jake mustard plug is the closest to less than jake's sound both have that 80s anthem rock influence listen to 'beer' and 'something new'. very LTJ vibed also listen to the pray for mojo album. the whole album goes hard love the song 'away from here'
Haven’t listened to much LTJ but seen them live earlier this month. So much fun!!! I had to buy the guitar Pedal “ all my friends are Pedal Heads” by Oneder Effects
That game had some good songs. It had ordinary fight in it I believe and a against all authority song which was sweet. Suggestion; streetwalker by Time Again or gang control by leftover crack.
Need to Checkout Mustard Plug. Really any song is good but I will give a few from 1991 to present songs. Mr. Smiley, You, Grow Up, Freshman, Doin what We Do, Box, and Where Did all my friends Go

I've considered some videos like that - we shall see! In reality it's just sort of a scooped tone which many players do, but I don't know, it just has a cool character to it, definitely one of those things that come from his hands too.
You should watch a couple of his play through videos. He def has a unique style.
@@LowEndUniversityI'll watch some of Lima's vides on his channel where he's playing songs and try to see visually what he's doing. I remember when I was young, I tried to replicate Lima's sound by tweaking things on my amp and guitar, but I wasn't sure what I was doing back then.
Next to check out should be The Bar Stool Preachers - When The World Ends
UK band influenced by Two-Tone rather than Ska (same same, but different)
Karl 'Bungle' Jeffery is sky high on my favorite bassists, and I'm so glad I got to watch them while they were playing small clubs
If you like a bit of old-school ska-punk, check out Skankin' Pickle.
Idk if you have heard yet Skankin Pickle! Going down the ska rabbit hole leads to The Bruce Lee Band which is a mixture of less than jake and skankin pickle...epic!
Good horn playing on punk songs gives a positive energy somehow. Orchestral.
This song is simply the best of LTJ. Killer!
2 more Ska Punk Bands to throw out here: Mustard Plug and Skankin Pickle. Partial to Mustard Plug's Beer and Skankin Pickles' Missed the Bus myself, but lots of great songs by both.
Rogers a big stingray player, gives him a pretty unique sound in the ska/punk scene, same for mike of mxpx
Nervous in the Alley is my favorite of this album
FUN FACT: Hello Rockview was one of the first albums recorded directly to ProTools.
Love it. How about Still by Rufio next? Speed kills.
Ednas Goldfish another great 90s Ska Punk band who dont get enough recognition
Honey Peeps by All from that Street Sk8er soundtrack is phenomenal!
Roger might just have my favorite bass lines in all of music
check out Rehasher too - Roger sings and plays guitar 👍
Lost Again - Dance Hall Crashers
You should check out History of a boring town or Roger’s side project Rehasher. Rehasher not as much for the bass but just because it’s good.
Rehasher-1st album 10/10
It‘s a song of my youth and I failed the first 5-6 years of my bass playing until I managed to recognize, that this is not about talent. It is about feeling it. Until today i can‘t play it perfectly, because Roger feels it more than I ever will
if you love less than jake
mustard plug is the closest to less than jake's sound
both have that 80s anthem rock influence
listen to 'beer' and 'something new'. very LTJ vibed
also listen to the pray for mojo album. the whole album goes hard
love the song 'away from here'
Haven’t listened to much LTJ but seen them live earlier this month. So much fun!!! I had to buy the guitar Pedal “ all my friends are Pedal Heads” by Oneder Effects
If you want some fun, kinda strange ska stuff, check out the Aquabats. Great ska band
That game had some good songs. It had ordinary fight in it I believe and a against all authority song which was sweet. Suggestion; streetwalker by Time Again or gang control by leftover crack.
My favourite bass/horns combo is on “It Can’t Hurt” by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
This song structure also takes me back to America's Funniest Home Videos because that was a ska Punk intro very similar sounding
Need to Checkout Mustard Plug. Really any song is good but I will give a few from 1991 to present songs. Mr. Smiley, You, Grow Up, Freshman, Doin what We Do, Box, and Where Did all my friends Go
