    Coming back to this video a year later, it's so refreshing for someone to see this game the same way i had. I loved this game with my soul, from the progression to the exploration, and it just felt so demoralizing to see others judge it so harshly. Im glad that there's at least 1 good analysis in it on youtube. Thanks.

      I had this on my Wishlist b4 it came out, Because its release was so harshly Judged I lost my excitement for the game, And kind of forgot about it. Stumbled upon it being on my steam wishlist, at the same time I stumbled onto "Fooster" who is doing a playthru RN. watched 40 min episode, and said I have to play this game before I watch too much and know too much. Not knowing anything about this game Is the way to do it, and dont understand why people didnt enjoy that aspect

      Man oh man, it plays so much like AC, but it's way better too. I've read eons ago from one Nintendo dev. The story in his games has to do with gameplay. It's there to prod the gameplay. This one is a perfect example. It's all gameplay beginning to end. The only thing is, it's extremely addictive. Be ready for it. You save by building a nest and laying down to open skills. That lets you save in the wilds anywhere. The game doesn't explain it, so I thought I should.

    A lot of the people who didn’t like it were just impatient, this game really shows how evolution happened. A lot of the reviewers expected to be done with the game in the span of a few hours and move on, but they were disappointed when they found out that’s not how evolution works, it takes time. I completely agree that the game was treated unfairly and I hope it gets more respect.

  • @itsClaptrap
    @itsClaptrap 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    for me, I was a bit bummed that I couldnt discover fire in the way we theorize early hominids could've acquired it first, visiting a lightning strike and taking tree limbs or branches that have been set on fire
    however the lack of fire did not detract my enjoyment at all, in fact I've played this game 5 times from start to finish, I've likely seen every interaction with every animal and tool at least one time in my playthroughs. And honestly I've probably missed a couple obscure ones (like having an Otter fight a Elephant) but that's why i fell in love with this game, I always felt like there was something for me to discover and something for me to do. Nothing was ever a waste of time, and you could always come out on top if you were perceptive and understood the world well enough to defend yourself
    A GREAT example, tools/weapons have range! Sticks and Bones have long range, rocks have short range. These ranges only really effect if the target animal is likely to hit you and break your limbs, cut you, or poison you. Longer weapons, way less likely to get hurt. However, Sticks break but deal a lot of damage and are capable of killing animals. But bones never break but cannot kill animals. However, rocks cannot break but they _can_ kill animals!
    So what I did is carry a basalt chopper (they sharpen sticks faster than obsidian scrapers in my experience) and a sharpened stick. So anytime a tiger would attack me, I counter attacked with my stick, if they lived, I chased them down with my rock until I eventually killed them. And heck, wounding an animal makes them flee slower! So if you used a stick to injure them, theyre not likely to get away from you and your chopping rock, eventually theyll succumb to being chased down, and your repeat assaults will easily land you a whole banquet for your clan 😁 (assuming you can consume meat without getting sick)

    Just got done playing for the first time and I love it. I have never experienced something like this and it is a shame this game didn't get more praise. I'm not gonna lie though, my first like hour ish I wanted to be 100% immersed so I tried for the first time with no HUD and no tutorial at all but I just couldn't figure out how to do things. Like I knew what I had to do and the materials needed but without the HUD for the button prompts I just could not for the life of me figure out how to do anything lol. I started over with the entire HUD and no tutorial and now I figured it all out. I had no idea how in depth something like having to switch a cut stone to the other hand to make the stick in the other hand sharp just to make a pointy stick hahaha. Once I learned what the buttons actually do I turned the HUD back off completely. I love this game. Only played about 3 hours of it so far and I'm hooked. Before the make someone mates task I just couldn't stop grabbing things and studying everything it's so addicting and satisfying when you figure something out on your own. I can't wait to figure out a fire lol but don't spoil it for me. Awesome game and awesome review.

    My friend convinced me to buy this game… I was up for the next 72 hours playing this game. It’s meditative and addictive. The scenery and music just draw you in. Not having a map forces you to immerse yourself in the environments and after a few hours you begin to remember landmarks like trees, rocks, hills, etc naturally. You truly evolve while playing this game.

    @ethankennan212 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I loved this game. I definitely notice a theme with it, about facing your fears to discover something new. I shouldn’t get too specific so as not to spoil it for people, but certain tools are difficult to create without destroying their base materials at first, but they are pretty effective and satisfying to discover once you pull it off. I had a fairly easy time with “fear of the unknown” as a game mechanic, but I still had my own hesitation to experiment in certain ways because of the cost of messing it up and not knowing what to do. But it was very satisfying when I finally got over myself and figured out how to do those things. I also really like trial and error gameplay in general, especially when it comes to survival games like this and Rainworld. One thing this game does have on Rainworld, which is still a pretty good game in my book, is a lighter penalty for messing up. It does still penalize you since losing too many of your apes can cause certain evolution progress related consequences to happen, but it’s possible to breed/recruit more and make up for lost progress. You also have more chances to mess up or succeed before your ape dies too in many situations. This makes it safer to experiment, explore and learn from failures and mistakes, while still having enough punishment to make it a tense experience to do so. That’s probably one of the most important parts of making a good Trial and Error game, survival or otherwise. I also love how it ties so much of it’s mechanics into a timing mini-game, to tie it all together and make it feel coherent and similar. The combat cutscenes also feel pretty cool to watch.

    I sincerely hope this game gains some sort of cult classic attention. I respect the creators for going hard on the "fucking try and die" method but it has alienated many (especially youger) gamers from appreciating how great it truly is. Perhaps in a sequel they should include a "hold my hand" options or atlease give advice and drop hints when the game murders all your tribe sans one adult male and a baby. My son and I nearly gave up a couple of times when it all seemed so hopeless and we didn't know how we could recover. It's brutal, and I think that level of brutality should be optional for people who are willing to forego the gratification of figuring it all out on their own. Key word...optional.

    You're evolving along with your ape. I like to see it this way that the people who didn't have the patience and left the game early on actually didn't have what it took to evolve, just like the many apes who died and couldn't survive to evolve.

    Ok so you know the sound and effect that happens when you alter and fight, well, the sound that plays now was different before and it didn’t have the effect. The alter mechanic wasn’t different before the new click sound but the fighting mechanic was, based on which animal you fought you had to hold down the “action” button to strike them or you would fail the attack and I remember the time you had to wait before letting go of the action button was really long when especially fighting the miocene pelican so I would always get the feeling that I was about to die making me let go of the button to just fail the attack and have to leave the area to wait and come back to try again. Ahhhh, good memories...

    I jumped into this game feet first without any prior research and after many many many hours of playing I am still nowhere near finished. It's brought me out of a gaming slump and taught me again how to simply play and explore instead of "completing" or "finishing". I love the soundtrack, it's an under-appreciated part of the game and evokes a massive feeling of curiosity and wonder, similar to how I felt watching Jurassic Park for the first time as a child. 10/10 would double dip into this game if it ever gets released for the Switch and would definitely buy any future releases from the studio just for going against the flow of current video game industry trends and staying original. Fuck the reviewers. This is an important game that is actually quite educational. Can't stop thinking about it even when not playing.

    I really can’t make my mind up about the skill tree in this game. I’ve never been so conflicted. On the one hand I think it genuinely can be somewhat boring or off putting as a lot of the skills are just smallish improvements in what you already have available (obviously right, I’m not expecting to evolve fire breathing and wing). On the other hand tho I absolutely love it. Because you’re not handed a crazy new mechanic every other time it’s unbelievably refreshing and exciting when unlocking something like bipedalism. Essentially everything you can unlock you can already do from the start, you just get vastly better at it which I think is so much better than say spider man for example, heres your electric webs, and now your sticky webs. It just diminishes how great it is to be able to do something new.

    Love the review ... thoughtful, insightful, and funny. I also love the game for pretty much the same reasons you've outlined here. I'm sick to death of the dumbed-down, hand-holding, "follow-this-bouncing-ball" approach to questing and video games these days. Ancestors is a breath of fresh air on that score. And the payoff is amazing, because once you start to figure things out, you have a sense of accomplishment that is extremely rare in other games. For my first entire day of playing this game, I was scared out of my wits of that big green "starter snake," as any good primate should be. But when I eventually got good enough to dodge, and counter-attack, it did feel like a world-changing victory for my little primate.

    This game was everything i imagined for. I like apes monkeys and all that stuff and here we are a survival game were u play as an ape. Then another reason why i loved this game was IT WAS ABOUT HUMAN EVOULTION. I love studying human evoultion even tho im not in high school yet. They even added austrilopithecus afarensis playable and that was one of the most famous species! Im really young to be playing this game and to be learning about human evoultion. But nothing can stop me from playing this beautiful game! I looked at the reviews and i was like SKIP THIS. Then i decided to buy it with the remaining allowance i had and what an experience this game was!

    I got this game and had zero expectations and I think that's why I enjoyed it so much.
    I particularly enjoyed that there was no hand holding. Also, I love games where the skill tree progression depends on the player doing certain actions that would realistically increase their skills in a particular discipline/field.
    I think prior to Ancestors, Skyrim did this. You could totally pick up a bow or twohanded weapon and you would suck at it for a while. But the more you used it then more XP and perks you'd get in that particular discipline. I think it adds a level of realism because that's how we learn anything.

    This game very much gives you the choice of the forbidden fruit. I’m at about 7 million years now, and Jesus fucking Christ, my journey has led me away from that luscious green Eden I started from, to a stark, rocky landscape, scarce of food and water, and teaming with life as desperate as mine. The human odyssey is one full of struggle and suffering, while coming out on top against colossal odds. This game, while not perfect, really captures that continuous struggle to survive and adapt to the environments that human curiosity has cruelly destined us.

    after a failed engagement and setting on to work on my self and my psychological challenges of OCD, BPD, ADHD and DID/OSDD, i spent years of my life shut in learning philosophy and psychology and i found myself extremely frustrated. thousands of years ago ppl thought these things and founded schools of thought about how to think, how to do science, how to communicate effectively and how to cope with difficulties. yet humanity hasn't still doesnt use any of it systematically and it's not even part of our education. if i were taught these things, i'd have grown up with so much less trauma and pain and caused even less to the ones i loved and failed to protect. it frustrated me and it felt like my efforts were meaningless.
    thats when i found this game and it opened my mind wide open to my place in the chain of events in this cosmos. im only one ape in a long line. im only here to do my part and evolve as much as i can and trust the coming generations do the same and eventually, we evolve together into a species of pure brilliance and intelligence and compassion. with the power to love and protect all things. this game changed my life and my philosophical journey. that's precisely what all art aims to do is to be something ppl learn from something meaningful. and by thhat, this game is a masterpiece that did something special that no other piece of art could ever do in its place. i really hope it's sequel comes out. i cant thank panache games enough for the INCREDIBLE work they've done with this game

    The only thing i like to change is combat, it get very dull of being sound quick time event. They could use the fear meter as a tine limit of how long we can fight before succumb to fear.
    Would have love a evolution update that allows us a bigger clan and fight other clans. Since as apes we have fought others for animal like warfare.
    As for combat again they kinda ignore our Ancestors punch alot too fight which is how we got these big knuckles.

    Completely agree, the game is underrated. It's AMAZING. But I do understand why it's not for everyone - in the beginning, it can be a bit slow and difficult to get the hang off and I could see how you would just give up. I had a few moments of frustration in the beginning too :) That said, I don't think you need to start as many lineages as you said - after my first one died I tried again and took that one to the end 😊

    This game looks a lot like what i wanted far cry primal to be. I think im going to enjoy this. Have you played the long dark?
    It does a similar thing. No map or markers. Just an open world u have to survive hunt and fish and craft in. Like minecraft survival for proper adult men.
    Ur basically trapped in the snowy wildnerness of canada. U can drop into any map and randomly spawn. There are caves that connect the maps so u can travel to another if u can make the trek. Its basically earth after a climate emergency. You have no one else. Just occasional animals. Some u can eat, some that will kill you.
    U can break ur leg. U can bleed. U can fish. U can learn skills by reading books. U can chop firewood and make fires if the wind isnt too bad.
    One guy on reddit survived several in game years before finally dying.
