    I bought my 5610U this week after going down a rabbit hole of Casio vids and forums. (It initially started as me hunting for a Casio for my nephew… ended up me buying a g-shock for myself 😂).
    I really do see the benefits of the strap and premium nature of the 5000U, but I think the face and price point of the 5610U makes it a better buy for the likes of me. I’ve also gone down the route of buying some bull bars, a grey bezel and strap for a D5600P-8. I’ve seen this grey mod for it online and think it looks so amazing!
    I’ve also bought myself a nice little combi bracelet for when I wanna keep the black bezel.
    Have you tried many mods on yours?
    Would be great to see a mod vid and a gift guide for youngsters (who haven’t been lured by smart watches already).
    Cheers for the great content

    Man, I've been pushing this thing for years! The original GW-5000-1JF came out in 2009 and it's been the premium g shock ever since!

    • @vmarsch
      @vmarsch ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you noticed the buttons are slightly harder to push on the GW-5000-1JF? I've had one for years, and my newer, cheaper squares seem marginally easier to press.

    • @derekwalter4238
      @derekwalter4238 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @vmarsch no I haven't noticed that. The gw-5000 is the only square I've got. I'd rather have the stainless steel case with the screw down caseback over easier to press buttons. If I am in the mood for something like that, I'll just put on my gw-6900 instead

      To me the BEST ever square G-shock IS the GWX-5600-1JF..

    • @derekwalter4238
      @derekwalter4238 ปีที่แล้ว

      @LUISMA Sanchez I can see where you're coming from. I considered getting that piece at one point. I decided against it because I don't like the glossy look of the resin they used for it and as I said before, the stainless steel case with screw down caseback basically outclasses any other feature in my opinion. And I've got a gwf-1000 frogman as well as a gwn-q1000 gulfmaster for the moon and tide graph. All that being said, the g-lide squares are still pretty cool

    I have the previous version of this watch, the GW-5000 with module 3159. The metal inner case and polished DLC screwdown caseback are nice and the softer resin band is comfortable, but a few years in my band ended up ripping clean off the watch right at the lug bar. Not sure what happened, but I didn't really treat it too differently than my 5600e and that watch's strap was fine.
    I still have the 5000 today and after digging it out of a drawer I charged it up and it still syncs with WWVB fine.
    I'll eventually get a new strap and bezel for it, but at this time I honestly prefer the lighter weight and look of my 5610u. Modern plastic cased G-Shocks are plenty tough enough for me. After all, it was a plastic cased DW-5600e that set a Guinness Book world record after being run over by a 24.97 tone truck.
    Great video as always. Keep it up!

    I've worn a gd-350 pretty much every day for the past 8+ years for work. I cook for a living and as you can imagine, my gd-350 has seen some stuff. Water, food, blood, heat. All of it. It has that same style "4 screw" case back and I can't imagine "needing" it to be any more tough. It has developed that beautifully well loved high polished resin finish along with countless dings and scratches. It just always does what it's supposed to do. And the vibrating alarm is irreplaceable. All of that being said, I desperately want a metal g square so that I can beat it up and give it all of the dings and scratches it deserves. Kind of like a better way to document my story than the resin.👍👍

  • @mattcameron9349
    @mattcameron9349 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    The updated module is not to be sniffed at!
    Firstly, losing the el.backlight and substituting with an LED uses much less battery power, and by losing the electro-luminescent film in the display 'sandwich' the display sits closer to the crystal, giving a crisper look and fewer internal reflections.
    Secondly, the updated module means that the time is still displayed in the top-right corner when using the countdown or stopwatch timers. I REALLY like that, and it is a really practical feature.
    Thirdly, the day/date can be formatted to european display (with day then date)
    I am seriously thinking of getting this watch. I see that lack of colour as being a plus, making it look more of a 'serious' watch. One downside (maybe I'm wrong here) is that it appears to be very difficult to get a genuine replacement supple-strap.

    Being heavy totally goes against the DNA of square G-Shocks. Square G's are meant to be light and AFFORDABLE.
    For a truly underrated, vintage - and affordable! - square G-Shock I strongly recommend the "DW-5610SUS-5", which could be best described as Casio's love letter to its large worldwide military fan base. It is 1mm wider than the standard model, has an excellent stylish (and highly legible!) negative display and throws all the solar/MB6 excess bullshit overboard. Instead of the usual tin box, it comes in a military style cardboard box and with an extra high-quality nylon strap plus fixing tool - all for 100USD/€. A true collector's item.

    1🇯🇵🇯🇵% I can vouch: the JDM models are better, even if it is in an unquantifiable way. Russ nailed it in this post. I felt a bit odd paying 200.00 USD+ for an imported G-shock square, 3x the cost of a 5600E on AMZN and with less nostalgic color & text. I then immediately got thirsty to re-up with another as soon as I got mine on-wrist. The upgraded strap is softer, the display is clearer (like all the 3495 Modules? Maybe, but I think this one's better) and the beefy screw down, laser-etched caseback (and steel core) gives the watch a pleasant heft. It's a secret handshake for watch enthusiasts: Shows you care but does so in an unassuming, no-flash way. To opposite of modern Invictas. Stealth wealth.
    ⭐IF YA KNOW, YA KNOW⭐
    (aka game recognize game)
    If you're on the fence, GET ONE NOW and "justify" the cost of it later, once you're honeymooning. 💯

    I have the GW5000 band and bezel on my DW5600e. Indeed the band is softer and more comfortable, but with use it does become shiny over time. The bezel compared to the 5600e bezel is a deeper black and the text is sharper looking. Also inside the bezel is apparent the 5600e is just molded while the GW5000 bezel has some other manufacturing process going on as it looks completely different.

Its a 35th anniversary LE from a a few years ago but its the most premium GShock square Ive handled. I was lucky enough to nab this one plus a couple of other 35th LE circles (black and gold, and the red) which are of the same quality. Really love it if you could review any of those.

      I own both. The GW has a more legible display, softer + premium resin, satin/matte buckle, all made in Japan markings everywhere, feels overall more like a special, neutral every day watch. The anniversary in comparison feels more bold and unique, a balance of rugged and jewelry, more colour + design with the brick and project team tough. Even though it comes with the gold buckle I prefer it on a combi bracelet (although the combi does scratch that beautiful caseback, so be warned). Accuracy + battery life on the 35 really debunks the need for solar atomic in the GW honestly. I just have both cuz I like them both - I prefer the GW for every day/winter cause of the neutral tones, whereas I like the 35 for summer/when I'm in a bit of a mood/ special occasions.

    I’ve seen many episodes of your show. I really enjoy them all. As a suggestion, since you mentioned exactly where you bought this particular watch, it would be nice if you would add a link in the description that points over to this exact model, so that we can purchase it as well. Even if they don’t necessarily ship to where I am located, it’s still will bring some perspective as far as what this particular model would cost shopping elsewhere. So, please put links in the description, even if you don’t get a commission for your time. The community will love you for it.

    I have a 35th Anniversary Origin edition square with a stainless core and screw in case back. It's a reproduction of the DW-5000C-1B from 1983 but it's battery powered and no atomic time. Not sure if I agree with you on that the heavier built G chock is better than a lighter one. Drop it from 20m hight. The plastic one will survive, not sure about the metal one. More mass more energy = more destruction. Maybe I’m wrong. That’s a nice video for you mate.

    • @StardustLegacyFighter
      @StardustLegacyFighter ปีที่แล้ว

      Both have survived a 40 footer truck driving over them, so I don't think the heavier watch is weaker.
      The first ever G-Shock had a stainless steel case, and it was absolutely tough as hell.
      The use of a resin case is simply to keep production costs as low as possible, not because it's a superior material.

    Nice review. I have all the squares featured here and then some. The GW-5000 is a watch I wear to the office indeed. It's a bit top heavy and the alarm sound isn't as loud as resin models (because of the metal case). I also have the GW-S5600U-1JF: the lightest G-Shock square for men with carbon strap -> this is my favourite square for activities since it's super light.

    Hey Mr. MWC, I'm a big fan...keep up the good work. It's pretty cool to see the 5000U get a little attention. I stumbled upon it a couple years ago when I was just getting into watches, and still have mine. It doesn't get a lot of attention though, because I have a titanium virtual armor (the actual "best g-shock square") and it's phenomenal. The 5000U is probably the best resin square though, I wouldn't argue that!
