I bought this watch a while ago. I love the retro styling. Always precisely accurate as it syncs every night with the atomic clock using the radio transmission from Anthorn in Cumbria. Radio syncing continued to work perfectly on a trip to Belgium. Mineral glass crystal is a nice touch, too. Display very easy to read, and backlight illumination effective with a subdued greenish glow. Plus, solar charging means no worries about changing the battery.
The multi-band feature and solar charging are the main points for me - absolute accuracy for both date and time, and a battery that lasts and lasts, no matter how much you use the backlight. I also have an older solar Waveceptor with just the UK and German frequencies but that covers almost all of Europe. The UK signal stretches out way west into the North sea / Atlantic, where few of us will spend much time but the German signal overlaps well into the UK and covers more of Europe ( Southern Spain across to parts of Turkey and Greece etc.). GPS might be even better because the watch will automatically switch time zones, but watches like that cost much more and ultimately are only more accurate when there's no radio signal. Having said that, at an accuracy of +/- 15 secs per month, watches like the 5610 are rarely more than a second or two out anyway before they manage to sync again.
"The only watch you will ever need" is true even for the base models. I have a base 5600 without solar tough that is 6 years old and still ticking - not a single batterie replacement. These little demons will still be used as timepieces by giant cockroaches when the world ends.
i’ve owned a number of gshocks and other mechanical timepieces throughout the years but never the square… that was until a few weeks ago when i bought the updated module of this model… i never knew i missed so much… thanks Casio!
Had mine for over 10 years now and it has not failed. It actually keeps the time more accurately than all the other radio controlled watches and clocks I have. I'll never get rid of it.
My first watch I bought at 17 was a Casio calculator, 1980 and currently have 8 Casio including this one , other round G shocks are to big for me cheers , Shane uk 🇬🇧
I can vouch for their toughness. My GWM-5600 hasn't let me down in the 13 years I've owned it. After 10 years on my wrist working on a building site, I retired it to my collection. Of course with a new bezel and strap. Never used a battery in all that time. Great video man. Thumbs up!!
Same here. Mine is over 13 years old and counting. I don't wear it in winter, I wear a slimmer watch that goes under sleeve layers easily (I work outside). Comes back out in spring, battery indicator always on high. One replacement strap. A few scratches on the display which adds to it's appeal. Copes easily with dust, sweat, water, dropping from height, you name it. Unbeatable watch.
I've been wearing G-Shock watches for many years. These watches are terrific performers for the money spent. Most of the ones I have are solar powered. These watches look very good, and at the same time they are an excellent time keeper tool.
Perfectly crafted piece of history on your wrist, and amazingly, still outperforms most watches even today. There's no reason not to get this little legend
I know a man who is rich. He loves to travel and I have observed him wearing a digital Casio. After he gets to his destination and when he goes out to dinner, he may put on his Patek automatic watch. He knows which is an adornment and which is functional. Obviously the Casio keeps better time than the Patek. I like Casios which have a traditional face with hands for aesthetic reasons.
This has been my work watch for years! It's had the lot thrown at it including concrete, paint and God knows what else and it's still going strong never missing a beat!
I'm still 100% satisfied with my GW-M850 that I bought nearly 8 years ago. Love it's solar capabilities. It's my E.D. watch. Not one issue with it at all. I wish I had purchased two of them that day. Im going to purchase this 5310 in it's steel version. I'm not a watch snob. I'm a G-Shock snob. Once you own one you'll understand. Great video 👍
Few people know that the G-Shock is actually based on an ancient Japanese self defense weapon used to repel Ninjas. The watch function is just a bonus Kikuo Ibe implemented because he was often late for dinner after all the hand-to-hand combat.
I bought this watch on Amazon, I've been wearing it daily for over 6 years, it's worked flawlessly. I won't wear any other, it's perfect. I do have the non- solar base model, bought at Walmart 7+ years ago, same battery on that one going strong. This is the best watch, there are better looking watches out there, but this is in a class of its own.
I’ve had this watch for 2 years and worn it everyday. I love this watch. Just purchased the new titanium square g shock. Steep price but I have no regrets. It’s definitely a premium square. Next purchase will be the newest frogman model!
I was issued this watch in the military some years ago and it lasted every day of rigorous training and tours for six straight years until the battery gave out. I wouldnt doubt had I changed the battery it wouldve lasted my entire enlistment to retirement
Just bought one recently. The solar and multiband is worth the extra money. No batteries to worry about and it usually syncs with the US tower every night on the first attempt. Try the 16mm adapter and a Nato strap. Much more comfortable. I own other G Shocks and love them but, this one has become my EDC. Good luck with yours!
I have the original. The screw back DW5000. Amazing, decades old, backlit with a miniature incandescent bulb. It's been through many new cases and straps but only 4 batteries in all that time, I even used to scuba dive with it, and operate the buttons underwater! Crazy to think that a 1980s digital watch will become a still working heirloom.
I too have the original, bought in Ibiza in 1983. Have dived with it and abused it all for this time. Many straps and bezels purchased but only 4 batteries in 41 years. I don’t think that I would like to scuba with it now but I am tempted to give it a 6atm pressure test one day. The only thing that has gone wrong is one of the bezel fixing screws has sheered off, but the remaining three keep it in place without a problem. The incandescent bulb is still working and lights up the display quite well I think. I have many Casio watches and have just ordered this one reviewed. I do however have some issues with Casio. Some watches have only a 60 min countdown and others a 24 hour, why? Some have a 60 min stopwatch and others 24 hours and in some cases much more (1000h with the Rangeman!) Why the restrictions? Please give us the option to change the date format on all Casios, not just the odd few. I do wonder if all of these inconsistencies are supposed to make us keep buying different models. Listen up Casio, we would still buy them! Maybe even more so, as I’ve elected not to buy some models because of the decision to omit certain features, which, at the end of the day are just programming restrictions and nothing to do with the limitations of a given display.
And another amazing thing about this watch. When the LCD took over from the LEDs on watches, the life expectancy of the display was quoted as just 15 years. And here we still are!
I remember as a child my 'local' watch shop always had shiny sparkly Casio watches when I walked by at Christmas, even the calculator ones. I've always wanted one since then. Now I have a "AWG-M100SB-2AER" and I love it!
As a kid, my family went on a trip to Hong Kong, and the watch shop windows were filled with colourful G Shocks. This image stuck with me. Even though I own some high end watches, G Shocks squares are what I wear these days.
"This is my first G-Shock. I REALLY don't think it will be my last." You are correct. I started with a GA-100, which I am wearing as I type. You cannot just buy one G-shock.
Thanks for another comprehensive & excellent review. A few weeks ago I bought the GW-M5610-1ER after deliberating over the many G-Shocks, I'm pleased I got the right one. I agree with all your comments & it really is a cracking watch. Everyone in the immediate family is wearing a Casio although we all have at least one expensive watch! My Wife is wearing a F-91W, my Son, who has a large high end watch collection, is wearing a DW-290 in preference to all his other watches. I also have, and am currently wearing, a W-800H-1AVES, another excellent Casio watch. Thanks again for the review.
A couple of years ago, I was looking at getting a Japan only GW-5000 1JF, with atomic time, tough solar, steel case and screwdown caseback. I ended up with a GW-B5600 bluetooth square on combi bracelet and the full metal IP blue GMWB-5000. They are superb watches, and I enjoy them even more as I continue to wear them.
Great choices, one day I’ll get the GW-5000 1JF…..to go with my DW-5200 from 1984 and my recently purchased GW-M5610 (bought, used from a Grenadier Guard)
I was gifted a Casio youth watch (module 2747) back when I was in high school and it's going strong for the last 14 years. Had to change the battery only once. Kudos to the engineering of Casio watches.
Today i ordered this Watch😍.That's my second G Shock now.I started with a GD-X6900MC-1ER 5 Month ago.Since i saw the 5610 in your Video for the first time 5 Month ago too,I can't forget this sexy piece of retro.
@@LastWatch No Problem:D Great watch but i would change some stupid things. But for now i'm happy.I was shocked how smal the 5610 is on my wrist compared to the GD-X I was waring round about 5month.Very unfamiliar
I just used it for three weeks in Africa and it was the perfect travel watch. I put mine on a couple of adapters and wear it on a Nato strap. Much more comfortable than the stock rubber strap.
You can turn off the auto-light (and have it button-enabled only, like in the G-Shocks in the 90's). Have mine since 2017 and the charge never dropped below "H" since then.
I have it from more than 7 years I think. It is in perfect condition, only I replaced the strap once. I wear it everywhere, including when I swim in salt water.
I've heard you can adjust the backlight between 2 and 4 seconds. I think you would be happy with the 4 second setting. My old watch broke and I've been researching and had just about decided on this one. You video helped me decide on it. Thanks. Thanks for a smooth, informative and understandable presentation.
I have the honor to own this masterpiece. and now I can't. and I don't want to buy another watch. instantly felt in love. year and a half full of torture. indestructible.
I have an 11 year old Casio Pathfinder PAW1500T. It has survived 100's of summits, 5 years in an engine machine shop, and any form of abuse an active adult male can dish out. I've gone through 3 watchbands and will tommorow replace the CTL1616 rechargeable lithium ion battery for the fist time. It's one of the few devices that never ceases to amaze me.
@@LastWatch and it still looks amazing... 2 barely scratches on the sapphire crystal bezel, and about 20 percent evenly distributed paint loss that frankly makes it look like Indiana Jones should be wearing it...
I have this watch. I can't put the radio control function to good use, since I live among tall buildings far north in Finland. However the quartz accuracy is insane. Two weeks ago I set the time to an atomic watch manually, and it's still on time to the second! Awesome watch and nice review!
For those who don’t already know, there is now an updated module (from the 3195 here to the 3495). It’s official designation is the gmw 5610u. Updates include: Much better GMT features when travelling; reversible day/month which European and other non U.S. regions will appreciate; current time always visible from each mode; LED backlight which uses less battery; stopwatch improvements. In other words, it now has exactly the same functions as the $500+ metal G-Shocks minus the Bluetooth connectivity (which requires faffing around with a ‘smart’ app on your phone/tablet anyway). Wisely, Casio left the look identical. Well, almost. The observant among you will notice it now just says “LIGHT” on the top right border of the screen instead of “EL. BACK LIGHT” UPDATE: It also has a slight bezel change making the “A” button (top left) in particular easier to access.
@@dsfgasdgqweq3456t534 Well, I don’t know about “awful”. It’s a matter of taste and practicality. The LED is undoubtedly brighter (less easy to see this on video compared to real life as it were). On the updated version it can be set to 3 seconds. But yes, the EL screen is more even from all viewing angles. Eventually though, it does deteriorate and even at full strength looks a little looking through a swimming pool at the digital numerals. Side note: The LED isn’t exactly the same on all models - at least subjectively. For example, I also own a black, full metal square with the STN negative display. The LED on that is close to perfectly even and, because of the negative display, it makes the numerals a sky blue over a midnight blue background. Quite a classy look.
@@dsfgasdgqweq3456t534 LED consumes less energy and it lasts much longer without any issues than electro-luminescence. LED was used in the first generations of G-Shocks. Casio is replacing all EL with LED for a reason. There are many YT videos why LED is better than EL.
ENJOYED YOUR LOVE OF G-SHOCKS, BUT BE AWARE COLLECTING CASIO G-SHOCKS ARE HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. HOW DO I KNOW MY COLLECTION JUST HIT ONE HUNDRED FIFTY G-SHOCKS WATCHES, BUT COLLECTING THE BEST, TOUGHEST, LONGEST LASTING TIMEPIECES EVERY ENGINEERED IS JUST FUN! THANK YOU CASIO!!!
I remember G shocks in my middle and high school days were the most unpopular watches. In my school days no watch was popular. Now as an adult this is my absolute favorite. This is so perfect for me. This will never replace the new apple watches. I’ll die with this attached to my wrist. I just replaced my databank with the basic Gshock I got from their website.
Had this watch for nearly 10 years never take it off I'm a manual worker so it gets some abuse I've only had to replace the strap in all that time the only thing I would change is the day and month I think they should be the other way around the date first then the month
This is the exact model that I've owned and worn every day for the last two years and the best watch that I've ever owned. It never needs adjustment and keeps perfect time, I just put in my north facing window of my London flat every night and it adjusts itself according to the long wave time signal transmitted from the England / Scotland border. The power reserve has never shown anything but high, and I almost never need to press any of the buttons, the only exception being the back-light button sometimes when I'm in a cinema.
@@LastWatch Clever though it is I found the auto backlight irritating, always going off at the wrong time and not warranted in my case by the very small number of times I use the backlight, so I deliberately disabled that feature.
I have the very same watch and was wearing it watching your review. It's a great watch. It's perfect for travel and also for any outdoor physical activity. I recently retired from a career in law enforcement and this watch has been battered, rained on, splattered with blood and mud, cleaned with harsh disinfectants, etc, and still works like a charm. The only time I switch it out is for occasions with a more formal dress, or my Apple watch if I need heart rate and step-count capabilities. Great review.
The “G-Shock octagon”!😁. I had one of these for many years. Eventually, I just couldn’t stand not being able to tell time while a stopwatch or timer. I gave it to a buddy who uses it every day to set his automatic watches.
I had this watch for a few years then did a six year prison term and it’s still going and has been worn every day for the last couple years since I have been out. Amazing
Nice video. I almost bought this model, but decided to splurge and get the GW-S5600 for about twice the money. It has the same module, but has more subdued graphics, a titanium caseback and a carbon fiber strap. I had to buy it from Japan, so it had extra shipping time. I am very happy with the watch.
@@teecchnoboy Still in perfect condition. I wear this watch for bicycling workouts (4 times a week). I prefer straps for exercising, since I sometimes wear the watches over thin layers of clothing.
Not sure if it's been said but this watch recently got an updated module. You can now set the date to MM.DD or DD.MM for all other countries that differ from the USA format. Also the new one uses an LED for backlighting that uses less energy, is more reliable, has a cool white blue color and can be set to last from 1 to 3 seconds. So you can flick the wrist less... or more if you like the new color better. 🙂
Just got mine today and I absolutely love it. Got it to use for fieldwork and on my motorcycle rides. My other watch was my grandfathers 1982 Rolex Datejust (now mine) and I was a bit worried about vibrations from my bike messing with the movement not to mention getting beat up when I do fieldwork. This looks great and it’s nice and light and not too large, or too small. It’s just perfect!
I've had one or 2 cheap Casio watches and the only thing seems to go wrong with them is the strap because the 10-year battery seems to last forever however I think you just talked me into buying this G shock. Thanks for a great review
I’ve owned the M5600 for 11 years and it’s been on my wrist almost every day. Works like the day it was new. Strap looks a little shiny now and the bezel has a couple of nicks in it. I’m tempted to buy a full metal version in chrome, but the price is a bit silly, so I’ll probably buy a M5610 if mine ever dies. Oh, and I have skinny wrists but this has never felt too big.
Bought the updated "U" variant last month, wears great, and I couldn't be happier with a watch where I can "set it and forget it". I've always been a sucker for atomic timekeeping as I hate having to manually correct watches, even with the budget Casios that is technically more accurate than a Rolex. Given the renowned durability of G-Shocks, I hope to have many adventures with it!
I got the $40 version, had it for 6 years, just replaced the battery yesterday. The watch looks extremely worn down but still functions perfect, nothings broken.
I have this G shock and I really like it. I find it doesn't attract too much attention because most people at a first glance think it most likely one of those cheap F91W Casio watches. I also have a G-Shock Riseman G-9200MS but that does attract attention because of the big size of it. I do enjoy G shocks and I think they are excellent value for money. Great video by the way.
I was looking for a beater watch and was thinking of some entry seikos, or even cheaper analog watches, but I somehow landed on g-shock. It was your video that helped me chose the model. This is excellent watch and unlike most g-shock, it's not bulky. Love it.
@@Myrslokstok what do you mean? i wanted a "beater" with a budget of about 150$ max. I have 3 other (nice) watches but currently wear only this G-shock, the initial idea was opposite - have a watch to wear when nicer watches could be damaged.
Lost my old G Shock while scuba diving. So now the fish know what time it is.
For at least 3 seconds then they need to check again... sounds like a good excuse to buy anew one

They have a ten year battery life at the least. It's a investment in time ,so is your 5600 without solar tough.
That's the dilemma. I also have a 5600 and can't justify the upgrade...
Yes don't use the light or alarm and trust me the battery will keep going for many more years...
I have a G-shock from about 1990, and it is still running, it was a gift from a Japanese company when I did some work there.
Banzai... Lucky on all fronts
i’ve owned a number of gshocks and other mechanical timepieces throughout the years but never the square… that was until a few weeks ago when i bought the updated module of this model… i never knew i missed so much… thanks Casio!
Had mine for over 10 years now and it has not failed. It actually keeps the time more accurately than all the other radio controlled watches and clocks I have. I'll never get rid of it.
Question, when it hasn’t been powered by solar, does it readjust the correct time in its own when it gets power?

My first watch I bought at 17 was a Casio calculator, 1980 and currently have 8 Casio including this one , other round G shocks are to big for me cheers , Shane uk 🇬🇧
I can vouch for their toughness. My GWM-5600 hasn't let me down in the 13 years I've owned it. After 10 years on my wrist working on a building site, I retired it to my collection. Of course with a new bezel and strap. Never used a battery in all that time. Great video man. Thumbs up!!
Tough watch for a tough job
@@corac4 👍 Unbeatable 👍
I've been wearing G-Shock watches for many years. These watches are terrific performers for the money spent. Most of the ones I have are solar powered. These watches look very good, and at the same time they are an excellent time keeper tool.
More accurate than any automatic
I bought this about 12years ago and it still runs very well. Tough Solar battery is still powerful as first time I got. Super durability.
I thought it was supposed to have a 10 year battery, how did yours last 12

I know a man who is rich. He loves to travel and I have observed him wearing a digital Casio. After he gets to his destination and when he goes out to dinner, he may put on his Patek automatic watch.
He knows which is an adornment and which is functional.
Obviously the Casio keeps better time than the Patek.
I like Casios which have a traditional face with hands for aesthetic reasons.

The steels are gorgeous
Few people know that the G-Shock is actually based on an ancient Japanese self defense weapon used to repel Ninjas. The watch function is just a bonus Kikuo Ibe implemented because he was often late for dinner after all the hand-to-hand combat.
You are definitely on my friends list
:D
I never thought I will ever get excited about a watch, but this video did that. Thank you amazing video.
Wow, thanks!
Its hard not to wear it
Do you still wear that watch?
@@ardianha5346 yes, everyday. 10 years now.
I’ve had this watch for 2 years and worn it everyday. I love this watch. Just purchased the new titanium square g shock. Steep price but I have no regrets. It’s definitely a premium square. Next purchase will be the newest frogman model!
Luxury price for a G, you must be smitten
I was issued this watch in the military some years ago and it lasted every day of rigorous training and tours for six straight years until the battery gave out. I wouldnt doubt had I changed the battery it wouldve lasted my entire enlistment to retirement
Supreme H I bet that watch could tell a few stories
Just bought one recently. The solar and multiband is worth the extra money. No batteries to worry about and it usually syncs with the US tower every night on the first attempt. Try the 16mm adapter and a Nato strap. Much more comfortable. I own other G Shocks and love them but, this one has become my EDC. Good luck with yours!
Joe Momma Thanks, I’m not keen on NATO’s but hey you never know
I have the original.
An absolute classic
The best watch I ever had... Got mine in 1987... and took it scuba diving!

This couldn't be more true. I've had this watch for years and it is simple and perfect.
10 years and the battery of mine still says "High".
Case got beat up and cuts over the years at work but that just adds character to the watch.

I've owned one of these for almost 3 years after finding this video. It's still on my wrist.

I have this watch. I can't put the radio control function to good use, since I live among tall buildings far north in Finland. However the quartz accuracy is insane. Two weeks ago I set the time to an atomic watch manually, and it's still on time to the second! Awesome watch and nice review!
Lovely Finland, I visited Tamperer a few years ago. I can understand why the multiband 6 might struggle
I also live in Finland about 150km north of Tampere and my Casio 5610 takes an atomic time every night. Great watch!
They must have an excellent engineering department. The new GWM5610U addresses EXACTLY all the drawbacks you mentioned.
They listen to their customers
BACK LIGHT”
UPDATE: It also has a slight bezel change making the “A” button (top left) in particular easier to access.
Thank you for this, I have been replying to comments for some time explaining to viewers that this module has been upgraded since my review
The LED looks awful compared to the EL. You just can't beat that retro green glow

Just roll your wrist in the Cinema and the watch should light up automatically
Its the perfect watch to get you thru the Apocalypse or a typical day in law enforcement
