  • Back to 30 years ago, April 1991 at King's Cross. It's a Sunday and several charter trains depart north, a MkI rake hauled by a class 91 (very unusual), a Generator 47 on another and a regular 47/8 on the last. Also seen are normal timetabled Inter-City workings with Valanta powered HST's and a class 91 MkIV set. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

All excellent - very interesting workings of IC charter stock. Thank you for posting.

Thank you...... There must have been some sort of event on in London to have so many charters at the same time. The class 91 on one was rare although i have noticed i have also caught another one on a charter working at a later date....

Ah great memories thanks!! Yes interestingly, ex Gateshead 47413 was withdrawn from traffic the first week of April '91, re-instated the following week back to Imminghams IECA pool for further Intercity ECML work. Although what most of them IM ECML 47's actually done, is a mystery to me hehe. Generator 413 was given the splendid LL blue livery around june 1986 at Crewe works and i have a '110' snap of her at Bristol with a generator coach/mk.3 stock in tow in june '88. Same day as 47401 there!
I see SF's 08833 in GE dark blue on the LHS in the background there too, it was always at Liverpool usually eh!
And 47810, an interesting one too, as ex 47655 with scottie dog motif on LL blue, was first given IC 'swallow' livery 11.89 at either BR, LE or OC depots, with the slightly rare non-standard red buffer-beams, only to be repainted again at Donny works during CEM 12.90 where-by gaining black buffer-beams.
And the mighty ex GD 47477, been in that blue since 7.84, one of the longest lasting 47's without an overhaul by this time and by now moved from Trans-Pennine to parcels work.
Loved the silver roofs of IC stock, surprised the idea wasn't taken up by BR eh. Cheers for todays delights sir hehe!!

It's like playing a game of tag with trains. Each light loco in turn becomes the haulage loco for the next service.

Back before Kings Cross was messed about with and hemmed in by construction. Sad to see the 91s ousted by those awful Hitachi kit built things.

It was even better before the 1978 rebuild. I don't remember the Moorgate links still running, but the tracks were there as were the motorail terminal and whatnot. The loco shed was also run down- it was a bit of a grotty hole, to be honest, but it was a lovely grotty hole.
There was something special about travelling out of Kings Cross; there always was.

Although my BR modelling preference is normally 1948 to 1968, I'm fast loving the 80s and early 90s - my teenage years - even though I grew up in a different part of the world. Therefore things like Intercity Swallow livery and Railfreight livery, along with "Large Logo" livery are becoming increasingly fascinating to me!!! 😍

Almost everything was interesting in this video.
Even one of the HST's, because in 1991 43072 and 43050 were Midland mainline powercars to St Pancras!
You must have filmed this at the end of the morning peak, because the Class 91 at 7:20 was one of the Pullman rakes, which was a 9-coach (10 with the DVT) rake with an extra 1st class coach. at this time, standard Mk4 rakes were 8+DVT length rakes.
And finally, the last train behind 47810 was one of the Mk2 was one of the two mk2 commuter rakes from Peterborough or Grantham.
By the end of the year, a pair of newly overhauled and modified Mk2 rakes took over this work. These were the 68xx series coaches which were Mk2f TSO's converted from former Mk2f FO's with mostly airliner seating and just three tables.
I'm a railway modeller, and I'm doing one of these commuter rakes, with a formation of:
    BFK(a)+FK(d)+8x 68xx TSO(f)+Mk1 BG.

@@tobys_transport_videos My modelling period is the late 80's into the early 90's (which is why I love so many of these videos!), with the core period around 1992/93.
I have some earlier stuff which means I can go down to 1986/87, such as a Class 33 plus five Mk1's as seen on Cardiff to Portsmouth, Weymouth or Manchester/Crewe (before Class 155's took over)... or the end of the Class 45's on the Midland Mainline.
I also love the Class 325's, so I'd like a trio of those around 1995.
Of course, these are things I grew up with, so I have first-hand knowledge of these.
Incidentally... I make model railway videos here and there, so feel free to take a look at my other channel.

Laura, just for reference, at this time the ECML and MML shared a common pool of HST sets. They could quite easily be allocated to the EMCL 'racetrack' one week and then slumming it along at 80 on the MML the next.

    • @Cliffjumper24
      @Cliffjumper24 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Ah yes... one of the commuter rakes were used to Leeds on saturdays.
On weekdays, these Mk2s would be hauled by 89001 or a class 91 (blunt end first when heading south!) and just before they were displaced to the Great Western and Anglia routes, they were also hauled by a class 90 (90021-25) when 89001 finally broke down and was stored/withdrawn.
Originally, these commuter trains were planned to be push-pull sets with an ex-Scotrail Mk2f DBSO, but that plan never emerged and all 13 of them went straight to Anglia after being refurbished at Derby Litchurch Lane works, via Devonport Dockyard to have TDM fitted!!
