    There is no one on youtube that puts so much effort in saw testing as you do,

      Agreed as well. You're the only chanel I've found that puts consistent effort into saw testing and comparisons that matter! And they're aren't ridiculous comparisons of two different port jobs on two different size saws cutting for time. It's one saw, one test, with different variables. Keep this going!

      Graham Deere yea, lots of data and consistent testing is what matters.

    Can I ask exactly what you did to the final mod-tri port. I assume the ports were on the side as you said that was best for the 661

    Real data. I agree. Dual ports with the side port is the best combo. Bark box's and strait shots are junk.

    That sure is a smooth cutting saw, you've got her tuned just right.

    • @timorum
      @timorum 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You know it tunes itself aye?

  • @bplotts1
    @bplotts1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    By changing the exhaust and freeing it up you should re tune the saw because you may be to lean and by adding fuel the saw will run cooler

    • @jackylsmith8138
      @jackylsmith8138 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is an M-Tronic saw, it tunes itself.

    Hey where did ya get the black handle side support? Thanks

  • @jsmathey
    @jsmathey 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Where did you attach the T/C lead? On what part of the saw is it measuring temperature? There are some cheap T/C meters that could be easily attached to the top shroud to monitor engine temp while milling. If your willing to share your experience it would help pinpoint a good spot.

    • @jsmathey
      @jsmathey 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a follow up, my idea is to use a type K wire somewhere near the exhaust port on the jug.

  • @andrewotero1972
    @andrewotero1972 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just curious on the on the temp is that cylinder temp or cap coming out of exhaust muffler been trying to source info on exhaust temps can never find anything For chainsaws great video keep them coming keep chips flying

    Hello, could you please tell me where I can buy the port openings you installed on your muffler? Great educational video. I have a Ms661 and would like to modify the muffler like you did. Grat example of what can be done.

    • @augustrose9143
      @augustrose9143 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it's a husky 2nd port. Most saw shops carry em. They're about 30 ish$ at least where I'm at. Or check out west coast saw's bark box. They're about 80ish delivered. Don't have to cut your muffler and they look and sound mean!

  • @drdreas
    @drdreas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video. Did you do the 90 second M-tronic recalibration after each successive mod?

    • @Redbull661
      @Redbull661  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've tested that idea a lot over the years and the only times I've seen it needed are entire carb change, solenoid change, coil change or if your messing with the timing.
      Scott aka tree monkey has done all sorts of changes to port timing and the mtronic always tunes itself right away. And I mean if you think about it, it has to be able to adapt to all these various conditions or the saws would burn up in no time. So I guess it makes sense that the mtronic can account/retune for a port timing change or a change to the air filter or change to muffler.

      @Redbull661  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      well no idea for sure. but I would guess that by running cooler that is more eff. and may be better than stock? I can tell ya this. It's a heck of a lot better than my old 660s!

  • @arthurstone3103
    @arthurstone3103 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Seems like just removing the stock screen and leaving everything else alone is the best mod for the money. You picked up over 2 seconds on the stock average with that alone. Wish you had been able to do a second cut to see the consistency. It was only about 1 second off of the best time for the dual port.

    • @Redbull661
      @Redbull661  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yeah a very valid point. If it were me I'd open up the stock hole from 5/8" to 3/4" and use a wider weave screen. but that's me.

    Really should have done reset between every one so it gave 100% unquestionable result the gains may have been better

    • @Redbull661
      @Redbull661  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      tree monkey and I have done so much testing with that idea. With the older 4701A coil and reset it would have been in my opinion counter productive to do it. Because the reset actually resets to factory specs on the carb and the carb has to relearn and IMO it takes more than 5 cuts to do so. Now with the new 4702A coil gen 3 "calibration" I think it would be good thing to do a calibration after each change because the calibration procedure calibrates the saw for the best tune based on current inputs...thus the new inputs (changes to muffler).

    Instead of adding all the extra ports can I just open the stock port all the way? Would it flow the same?

    • @Redbull661
      @Redbull661  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no. port would be huge to have the same amount of surface area/opening and then you would lose your back pressure.

    • @stihlms
      @stihlms 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just thought of this, do a test between Stihl motomix and pump gas. Curious to see if there is any difference in power and running temp.

Can you tell me if any of that is true, and is he still working. He ported a ms660 for me, and was interested in getting another possibly ported? Thanks, Ronnie, East Tennessee,

    Hello there. Have you found that a 390xp prefers a side port instead of a front port as well?

    • @Redbull661
      @Redbull661  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      don't know sorry. never tested it. but that would be my guess.

    • @gerbutt
      @gerbutt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. I got an aftermarket exhaust which didn’t have the port on the top and I made it into a duel port on the front. I still have the exhaust that came with it with the single hole on the top, so I’ll have a dabble at making that one larger. How much bigger would you go with it?

    • @yotaismygame
      @yotaismygame 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Side ports are always better. You don’t want exhaust shooting straight out of the muffler from the cylinder. You want it to hit the front of the muffler and push out the side

    • @gerbutt
      @gerbutt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saw Greater, hello bud. I made the muffler with just the outlet on top and made it bigger. The saw defo seems to go better! What would you do to the saw to give it more low down torque?

    • @yotaismygame
      @yotaismygame 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      gerbutt porting. Base gasket delete would help some.

    I see a lot of different opinions on doing a muffler mod on a 391, so would I have to redo the time on it with a muffler mod or no?

    • @wizzylizzy69
      @wizzylizzy69 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve got a 391 with a dual port, made a big difference but I am still selling it and buying a 661

    • @wizzylizzy69
      @wizzylizzy69 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And he’s you had to re tune it

    • @TheWoodsmanMilling
      @TheWoodsmanMilling 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wizzylizzy69 I've already got a 661. I'm just wanting more power from my 391, but I might sell it to get a 462 or 500i. It depends on how my funds are doing when I make that decision.

      The black marks indicate there is iron in the wood. Most likely from old nails or fence.
