    Love the video. I have a MS660 I purchased new in 2009. I ordered the dual port muffler cover from Stihl and opened the stock port up more. I was told that it would gain .5 HP. I think it's important to scavenge all the heat you can from the engine for durability
    I also ordered the Australian high output control bolt and piston for the chain oiler. It keeps the 36" bar oiled nicely.

    2nd time watching this one...
    Totally cringed both times when the nose of the bar came near the forklift, camera angle had me scared!
    Good job with consistency! You bogged it in almost exactly the same spot on both cuts! Lol

    How long before the mtronic begins to adjust the mixture? One cut, or half a tank.?
    If you worked that saw for 30 minutes and then did the cut again, would it e faster as the mtronic has tuned it?

      It's an oak, we've a whole bunch of big oak logs right now. Were going to split it all into firewood, but with how much we have, and how hard it is to break down into manageable sizes, I believe a much larger tree outfit is slated to come in a few weeks with a semi-trailer mounted tub grinder and grind up/take everything we have in the lot right now. Boss said they're out of chips for mulch and asked if they could have it, hell yeah! lol Takes a large workload off of our shoulders.

    I have a 661 and the Sthil master mechanic I bought it from said not to do a muffler mod. He explained that the computer module is designed to make adjustments to normal operating variances, temperature, altitude etc. but not able to add enough gas to keep it from running lean if a muffler mod is done. Was he BS'n me? Maybe, who knows. I did a muffler mod on my 362 but I have not run it that long yet to know for sure if it will run hot. I did buy an extra muffler to do the mod so if I needed to take it in during warranty period I could just switch the muffler back. But as far as the performance gain goes, it seems minimal with the exception of the noise. It sure sounds faster. Have you ever owned a Harley or a 69 SS396 Chevelle? I have and they were both loud which added to the experience. Is it the same thing? I think so a little. For now I think I'll leave the 661 stock and start foolin around with it after warranty. The performance gains on the bigger saws are not going to be as noticeable as the ones done on a small saw just because they are so strong already.

    • @Human1337
      @Human1337  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're totally right in that I really just like the sound, and having fun fooling around with them. I've put quite a few tanks through all my mtronic saws, and they're all modded, and haven't had any issues yet. Other than they can be a bit tougher to start, often have to just hold them at full throttle.

    • @mattlewis9725

    Would you be able to make a video detailing how to tune the carb? I want to get a dual port muffler for my 044 but a lot of the youtube vids either use a tach or is someone giving limited detail and subjective descriptions of the process. If your chain sharpening and chain type vids are any indicator I think you would do a great job discussing tuning a saw carb.

    Hey so I just bought one used. It is extremely hard to pull the chord even when pressing the decompression button. Am I doing something wrong? Yours seemed to pull relatively smoothly. I'm thinking there might be something wrong with the decompression. I can get it to fire without a bar and drop starting it but even that is pretty hard.

    • @Human1337
      @Human1337  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Decomp valves are a known weak point on stihls, enough that many pros either plug it, or put in a husqvarna one. After pushing in the decomp, and pulling the rope slowly, can you hear air escaping from around the decomp? If not, that's likely your issue. If you can, then it might be a much larger problem with something binding in the drive train.
      Without a decomp, these can be quite the bear to pull start, does take a good bit of pull power.

      Not 100%, but from what I've read it actually runs cooler as it gets the hot exhaust gasses out of the muffler quicker. Don't have an answer for the longevity of the saw, but it's so common that I can't imagine it shortens its life, else it wouldn't be done so much.

      I'd love to get some husky's, just hard to justify as right now I don't actually need any more saws "can't believe I just said that, lol", also, as a former stihl salesman, I know their products pretty well and get a pretty decent discount on stihl products. The 661 is 2 or so months old, was brand new in the 661 review video. I love it, it's quite a bit more powerful than the 660 we use at work. With the muffler mod and an 8-tooth sprocket, it's a pretty fast cutting machine. Now just to get some more experience porting on cheaper saws, then doing the big guy =)

      Why yes it is, and I hate it. Not because it's a not a great machine, but because our boss insists that the door not be removed, and with it on, you can only open it with the loader all the way down, really becomes an inconvenience. Of course I don't take it off when he's not around or anything, lol. Also it has a seatbelt, which really sucks when you're used to a lapbar on a bobcat which is 10x faster to engage. It's a new holland c232, I'll be making a video of it at a later date.

      The mtronics have rev limiters

    • @kevinfournier8167
      @kevinfournier8167 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      to protect the saw ?

    • @Human1337
      @Human1337  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, keeps it from over reving. Though I did just rewatch the video, don't think it's that, would only hear that out of the cut and wide open. Not %100 sure to be honest, though after the mod the carb would need some cut time to adjust to the new running parameters, so it could be the carb adjusting.

  • @mjmtreeservicemaintenance2940
    @mjmtreeservicemaintenance2940 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you adjust the carb after the mod?

    • @Human1337
      @Human1337  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, this is the mtronic version, so it adjusts itself. On others I mod, absolutely.

    • @mjmtreeservicemaintenance2940
      @mjmtreeservicemaintenance2940 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Human Thank you. I didn't know that. I want to do this to my old 029 Super bit I never adjusted a carburetor before so I am a little worried I might fuck up and burn it out. The saw is like one of my kids.

    • @Human1337
      @Human1337  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely understandable. After a muffler mod, the saw will run lean, so you just have to back out the high side a bit. I'd hold off if you havent adjusted a carb before though. Maybe just grab a cheaper saw and play with it a bit. Back out the high side until it starts four stroking "count turns", and slowly bring it back to where it used to be while listening to how it runs at full throttle. Don't keep it full throttle long without a load though, not good for the saw, I usually just give it 1 second shots at full.

  • @bbigrocker1
    @bbigrocker1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's impressive, but my 661C has zero cuts on it and I'd be terrified to bust it open and do a mod on it....lol

    • @Human1337
      @Human1337  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, not doing anything more in depth for the time being. I've done enough mufflers to feel pretty comfortable with them though. By no means porting or anything like that, project for when I have more experience.

    That sort of messing around mufflers is for competition saws only in my opinion. Where every second counts.
    4 seconds better time is far too little to justify the noise coming out of her + I know it's two stroke only, but I think it still needs a bit of muffler pressure - I'd like to hear from someone who performed testing (stock, empty muffler), and can tell the difference in engine condition with and without mod.

    • @StevenWillmy
      @StevenWillmy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're cutting all day, 4 seconds several times adds up. With the right ear protection and heavy use, the mod is justified. But for light duty, noise is more important.
      Nothing needs muffler pressure for longevity, so long as it is properly tuned. That said, 2 strokes will make more power with the appropriate resonance pipe - not a practical mod on chainsaws due to the space it takes up, better to just use a bigger engine.

    The best mod you can do to the 661 is remove the junk m-tronic shit and install a carb off a 660 and a coil off a 660 then do the muffler mod and you will have a real saw that wont break down

    Unless you are a timber faller I wouldn't touch the muffler.
    The amount of power gained doesn't justify the noise.

    • @lozziiiiify
      @lozziiiiify 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dan Henderson well said, for the amount of time and effort and then the subsequent noise, all for a few seconds cutting is not worth it.

      Guys fucking around with their tools? It started when some asshole took his spear and decided to fab up another stick so he could throw it further. It will end when some asshole dials up his laser drill and gets everything banned, until then I'm of the opinion we let people mess up their tools however they please.
