It's not about the whiskey, it's the people you share it with!
#bourbon #whiskey #whiskeytube
The JD Single Barrels are fantastic, and their Rye is surprisingly even better. I was blown away when I picked up a Barrel Proof of it
Those JDSBBP are quite possibly the best value in whiskey right now. That age, proof, and quality of product from a legacy distillery for 60-70 is hard to beat. Great blind!!
Originally I would say ECBP but it's not always findable, so I'm starting to agree that JDBP might slide into that #1 spot with WT rare breed in third place.
What is the age of JD SB BP?
The black label is 2yrs, at best & as far as I know TN whiskey has no minimum age time (same as bourbon). So the way it's labelled, it kind of implies that it's the same stuff as JD black, just right out of the barrel (maybe filtered).
If it was going to be aged longer, (than 2yrs) or in any other way be higher quality than Jack Black, you would think they would want to do more to differentiate the product by including that on the label.
@@motohead077 did you watch this video? lol Jason said 7-8 yrs usually.
Facts
@@systemtrend3194 Yes, watched it. If it's not on the bottle, JD can say whatever they want about it, the age, etc, as they wouldn't be held to any legal standard or TTB approval for off label claims.
7-8yrs may be true for some, but don't see why they wouldn't put that on the bottle, if true for most bottles. They have to make a different label for every barrel anyway, so why not include the age or age range on it, like Baker's & ECBP does??
Those JD single barrels are top notch for the price. I was never a JD fan until they stared releasing these and the 10 and 12 year olds.
That JDSBBP is 50-60$ up here in Wisconsin. I always pick up another bottle after I run out. Probably my favorite barrel proof shelfer along with Rare breed. Cheers 🥃
Brown Forman is where its at! love their flavor profile
Jack Daniels SBBP is a great value! Can always find them. Favorite for me...
Agree that the JD is a great value and the OFSB just drink young and hot. The Woodfords are delicious but too $$$.
Just had a chance to see this one, ended up grabbing the Woodford yesterday, haven't cracked it open yet, but now I will make sure I grab the Jack, didn't know what I was missing, thanks
Glad you picked the JD. One of my favorites.
Just bought a bottle of the Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof regular and rye and they're both delicious! I enjoyed the rye a little bit better than the regular.
I have three open JDSSBP bottles. Love it.
Listening to your tasting notes I thought it would be JD, OF, Woodford. Which off of my own experiences is how I think I would rate them. Ive only had Woodford batch proof once and it was from like 3 years ago maybe and I was completely underwhelmed by it and at 130 bucks at the time was an immediate pass. Ive had some really good and really bad OF SBBP picks so with that one it really depends on the single barrel but I also agree that the proofed down ones are generally better. I love JD SBBP as it is one of my go to barrel proofs. I love the profile on most of the ones I have ever had. There are a few that I wasnt a huge fan of but the majority have been hitters. Matter of fact I believe that JD SBBP was the first barrel proof bourbon/whiskey I had ever had and loved it.
They came out exactly as I predicted. I have watched enough of your videos to know your palate is similar to mine and I guessed them also by your tasting notes. My palate is most like yours and Josh’s from Stuff and Whiskey and least like the Bourbon Junkies. Keep up the great work.
May be repeat this same blind with 2 or 3 different single barrels of the same one. I would love to see in one of your streams. Great video !!
As you were describing it totally jived with my experiences with these. I also usually get a dusty red wax licorice on WRBP. JDSBBP are hard to beat in a lot of match ups. Great triple bass, Jason.
Great show!!
By the descriptions, they came out just as expected. JDSBBP is a delicious beast. Include the price and it's practically unbeatable.
Just want to say thanks. Have used your reviews to make purchases of whiskeys and never disappointed. Even the ones you don’t necessarily like because you give such good tasting notes that I’m able to know it may be one that I like. Thanks so much.
Well, I’m glad the Woodford did better than I expected! I have all three but have not opened the Woodford yet - now I will hafta do my own triple bass! The OF I have is a major hitter though so it might do better. I have had several of them that are way too hot but the current one is just right! Thanks Jason
For the ones that are way too hot, have you tried adding water or another whiskey to it. Try adding water & some other OF whiskey (not together).
@@motohead077 thanks - I’ll give that a go next time I get a hot one. I honestly don’t remember if I tried adding some water so probably not.
Yeah, the nice thing about Barrel proof, is they let the consumer decide what proof makes it the best, so all options are available. Plus there is more juice in the bottle, being that it's all whiskey & no water added. So it's like getting 1L or more of a bottle that was proofed down.. Wish the straight whiskey law was changed to NOT allow any water added, so they would be forced to keep it uncut.
Nice Job. I started to pick up the Woodford at a Walmart store in Florida. They had it at SRP.
thanks for the informative video!
This is hilarious as I did this a couple of months ago! My Woodford Reserve Batch Proof is from 2023 and 124.7 proof and my JDSBBP and OFSBBP bottles are undoubtedly different bottles. However, the concept is the same.
For me, the Woodford Reserve BP trumped the others. JDSBBP was a solid second and the OFSBBP was an obvious third. The Woodford was way too expensive but it has performed admirably in all blind tastings. The Jack Daniel's are all such a good bottle at a great price. The OF Single Barrel Barrel Proofs are tasty but too young and too hot to compete. Thanks for the video!
Love JDSBBP...almost as much as their (usually) higher proof rye expression. Great video Jason!
I drink a lot of bottles of JDSBBP and the OFSBBS every year. And I think the biggest difference for me is the JDSBBP are always very consistent. You never get a bad one and the rest are always really good. The OFSBBS on the other hand very much more. You get some that are ok and others that will just blow you away some much that you can't believe that it's an OFSBBS. So I'm not really surprised by the results. As far as this year's WRBP I don't think it is as good as the last couple of years. I have all 3 of these bottles open so now I'm going to have to do a blind.
I've had some excellent OFSBBSs but I've never had a bad JD SBBP. Kinda crazy that the least expensive and easiest bottle to find wins the day.
I would have guessed the same order. JDSBBF are always phenomenal. Old Forester BF are like drinking liquid flames, and WR are very good but soooo expensive.
Those JD sbbp bottles are just fantastic
You're notes were spot on, it was like I could taste them. I nailed the blind off your notes. Great blind
I’ve been dying to get my hands on a OF SiB BP but my buddy grabbed one recently and we had some pours and it’s got such a Strange bitter pallet. 130p and I love higher proof stuff. It has a great nose, nice front pallet but quickly falls off and turns bitter like the char from the bottom of the barrel and not in a good way. Just a let down for $95. We both agreed that who ever picked it has a strange pallet. The Junkies mentioned the SiB are better at 100p and I’d have to agree since ice helped mine a quite a bit. Even tho I hate proofing down.
The key phrase is”if you like JD”…I don’t but it’s def good quality and value. I really wish i liked it.
So I have a modest bourbon collection of around 150 or so bottles. I do have quite a few allocated bottles, but my two favorite bottles are the Jack Daniel’s Single barrels, including the rye
"Modest".
Lol. Okay dude. Nice humble brag haha
I think ofsbbs are younger than when they first released it few years ago.
I usually get 375mL of JDSBBP so that I can get different proofs. I would love to see this blind repeated with the previous year Woodford Reserve BP 124.7 proof and a store pick of OFSBBP. Great video as usual!
Great review Jason. We combine old forester 90 proof picks with the OF cask strength picks 50/50 and it's fantastic. Even OF 100 50/50 with the cask strength is really good. I always say JD barrel proof picks are insanely good and overlooked. Woodford 121.2 is disappointing this year and extremely overpriced especially without knowing the exact age.
Ya that old Forester didn't stand a chance .. they are hit or miss on how good they are !! Definitely take a 100 proof pick !! Just listening to your notes the order was obvious 😂
JD single Barrel barrel proof bourbons and Rye are some of my favorite whiskeys. Amazing value and incredible flavors.
I get those JDBP in central Indiana for around $58 at Total Wine. The value is actually insane. I have found different batches of that WR, but theyre running $300+.
Interesting video, I've got a friend coming to visit from Dallas. She's bringing my Total Wine curbside order with a Jack Daniels SBBP in it. Also 2 bottles of Journeyman Corsets Whips and Whiskey...can't wait😍🥃
Great lineup Jason! I have each and may see how my Old Forester sbbp does against the others.
I haven't had Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof that I didn't like. Definitely a great value and always on my bar shelf. If i could get my friends to stop mixing them with coke.
Love this triple based blind! Nice work JC!! I have all 3…biased!
I have the Woodford BP from 2022 (118.4 proof) and that has really become one of my favorite pours. That being said, Woodford is fucking around with the prices on those releases (I paid $130) so the value is absolutely low despite the quality
I would love to see a comparison of the barrel proof ryes from Brown Forman. I have only had the J D sbbp but i think it would be real interesting! Cheers!
Three bottles throughly reviewed in ten minutes. That's why your may fave, J. I am a Brown Forman fan-boy but struggle to get a blend of them to play nice.
Good vid. My favorite bourbon channel.
So glad you did this. I was hesitant about spending that kind of money of WRBP, but glad I did. It’s so much better than OFSBBS compared side by side.
JD is, and has been, killing it
Those are all great ones. Not surprised the JD wins. I figured the OF would be second. I sure wish the WR batch proofs were around $100 instead of $150s.
Great series and the kind of comparison I was recently thinking of. So glad JD was tops. I can find it consistently and only $64.
Jason, you are the Mike Portnoy of whiskey reviewers! Always enjoy your content and tend to agree with your assessments. Keep up the great work!
It’s hard to watch the outcome of this…such an amazing blind…really big Kudos on this selection! $$$
I'm surprised WF didn't get first, but also happy to see JD take it.
I've had this name for a while, and now the jig is up lol
Think we might have the same single barrel of the JDSBBP. When was yours bottled?!!
French Oak Battle. Options:
Makers Mark 46 Cask Strength
Penelope Architect
Nulu
Old Charter
Dark Arts
RD One
Lucky Seven
Triple bass request.
Michters barrel strength rye
Bulliet 12 rye
Thomas Handy?
😎🥃🔥
Awesome blind! Hilarious how combined it was gasoline!!
If I ever knew which one you would pick this was the one. JDBP is tough to beat
Same order as me.
Double Bass idea: ECBP C919 vs. C923 🥃
JD BP was what I thought was in glass number one. Have not had a bad one.
OFBS Single Barrels are young, heat cycling or no, they're running picks out under 3.5 years old.
Correction: The TTB states ANY whiskey under 4yrs MUST have an age statement. Though apparently this is loosely enforced, if it all, and many bottlers violate it. The biggest offender is Jack Daniels, with the flagship Jack Black 80P being 2yrs & not having an age statement. So, what you said about 3.5yrs is very possible..
The 3.5 yrs can't be true unless it states that on the bottle (or you believe old Forester is acting illegally in bottling). If there is no age statement on a straight whiskey bottle, the juice inside is 4+ yrs.
@@motohead077 it said 3 YRs, 6 MOs on the sample bottle when my group was doing the pick. We went with something that was five years old.
how about Benchmark 8 vs Very Old Barton 86. call it King of the Swill.
JDSBBP is liquid gold!
How about a Bardstown Bourbon Co. Single Barrel pick vs a Green River Single Barrel?
Jason... "Whiskey 101" question for you (and I have asked this same question elsewhere, but have never gotten a very clear answer)....
What makes that JD SiB a "whiskey" and not a "bourbon whiskey"? The mash bill meets the "bourbon" requirements, yet it's not bourbon. Same goes for other bottles like Michter's (U.S. Whiskey vs. Straight Bourbon Whiskey, etc.). Is it simply a matter of the distilling process? The barrels used?
I've heard good things about these JD Single Barrels, but that Old #7 is some of the worst.... stuff I've ever tried to drink. So I'm a bit hesitant on JD in general. Thank you!
So in short jack Daniel's does qualify to be a bourbon if they wanted to be but for marketing and history purposes they brand themselves as a Tennessee whisky. I did a whole video on it which you can check out. I called it "jack daniels is bourbon." As far as Michters American Whisky, they age in used bourbon barrels rather than new which disqualifies them for being called bourbon since its not a new barrel
I would have guessed Woodford last, but I've never had the pleasure of tasting an Old Forester Barrel Proof
This ain’t your old no. 7, Jack Daniel’s is making moves that continually impress. No surprises here that JD would top Woodford and Old Forester.
It will be interesting to see a 10 year blind with Jack 10 vs Mckiney 10 vs Eagle rare 10. May be add ECBP A124 even if it’s 9months older than others
I'm definitely due for a premium JD.
Hey Jason, I’d love to see KC18 vs Hardin’s Creek Jacob Well (specifically 211 to be fair on age)
I'd take Jacob's Well Batch 2 all day against KC18.
@@Midfielder097so would I, but still interested to see Jason blind them vs each other
Not overly shocked by the rankings. The OlFo SBBP have been so hit and miss for me. The best ones would have a shot at taking first in this blind, but too many are easy 3rd places.
JDSBBP for the win all day every day... always delicious
I was sure glass 2 was the Woodford… darn it
I was rooting for JDSBBP!
I would have gone with "Jack's old wood". Giggity
All are good pours. I bought them knowing they would be.
Based on your taste notes I guess exactly right. The JD SBBP punch way above their weight. The WR is too overpriced to get their product at a higher proof and the OFSB it too high for 5 year old whiskey. I thought it was older.
I knew I wasnt crazy for thinkinh so high of jdbp.
Usually the most expensive bottle seems to win out in these blind tastings, but I'm not surprised by your decision. Single Barrel Jack is still one of the best values out there, however the proof does vary greatly from one bottle to the next! My last one was just over 138 proof and I had to air it out a bit to calm down. 131 proof like your bottle is more to my liking, but splitting hairs here on a great pour! Cheers!
I did not know Jack D was a Browns Forman product
Exactly how I'd rank them based on profile. Soon as you called out chocolate peanut butter banana sandwich, I knew which that was. I don't get how the Old Foresters are so popular, they're borderline undrinkable to me.
Ok - I replicated this. Jack Daniels for the win. Old forester in 2nd and 2023 124.7 Woodford in 3rd.
WHISKEY CHEERS 😎
I have those three I sense a blind tasting in my future 😜🥃
So I absolutely love the 2024 Woodford batch proof...but the only reason I purchased one was because I actually found it at $150...most stores I see it in mark it up even higher to $170 or $180. I just can't justify paying that for a non age stated bourbon and it breaks my heart! LOL
Got it at Total Wine for around 130? Cant remember but it was below 150! Fantastic bourbon
@@ClimbMitBourbon Wow that’s a much better price…unfortunately I don’t have a Total Wine near me
Value , price and availability? It's a no brainer, JD will always win
Where is the KoK and Coy Hill!!! Redo! LOL! Cheers Jason.
7-8yr for the JD BP shelfer!? NO WAY. JD No#7 is 2yr. be lucky if that's 4-5yr. Some picks maybe 6-7yr.
Feeding the comment section 😅
Jack's Old Wood?
OF, Jack, then Woodford is my guess
Appreciate the blind. JD all day for me
Jack, OF, then Woodford is my guess
Thank God I don’t get banana notes on any whiskey. I hate bananas.
Jack, OF, then Woodford
Feeding.
OF should win these all day but people dont know how to pick.
That was in the gift shop he said, so would guess all those are barrels that nobody else picked.
This is an unfair comparison. JD is Whiskey not bourbon, and is filtered (sometimes multiple times) to remove any off-putting notes. It shouldn't even be part of this comparison. Just my opinion. It's kind of apples and oranges.
@@footnotedrummer Jack Daniel's in fact does qualify to be bourbon. It chooses to not be labeled that way. The master distiller at Jack Daniel's will tell you that. There are multiple bourbon that use charcoal mellowing just like jack does.
