This has made me consider my mess of a wardrobe. I've been in loungewear and active clothes for a year and a half - haven't touched my work wardrobe since March 2020. And honestly, I don't want to. It's not me. Because I was always working and then coming home and wearing loungewear, I never built a wardrobe of "me" clothes if that makes sense. It makes me feel icky. I want "me" clothes again!

That's how I ended up whit a MASSIVE wardrobe : keeping clothes for years and randomly adding an extra (thrifting) piece over the years. What's the point of throwing clothes if they fit ?

    • @thatjillgirl
      @thatjillgirl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Same. I am 32 and haven't changed clothing size since I was 16 (which I realize sounds like a humble brag, but I'm not blind to the fact that a lot of it has to do with the fact that I have never had children). I literally still own a few things I bought in high school. They still fit, and I still wear them. I only get rid of clothes if they are beyond repair or if I notice I truly don't enjoy them anymore. So I have wound up with a pretty huge wardrobe, but that's what happens when you are able to keep clothes for a decade or more.

I love having a seasonal wardrobe, its a great way to see everything in your closet regularly as you switch it out. I have so much fun with my spring/summer and fall/winter closet changes, and I always hang the items I'm bringing with the hangers the wrong way on the pole. I can see everything that hasn't been worn immediately to try to fit it into rotation, and at the end of the season I have an obvious tell on which items I need to consider getting rid of.

Something that I've heard that I also want to do is putting a label on all your clothes. If you have worn it, you can take off the label. Then, after a year, look at what still has a label. Then you have a selection of clothes that you have not worn for a year. If it was for a type of even that just doesn't happen as often, but you know will happen occasionally, keep it. If it works as a replacement for a piece that you currently have, you can put it in storage until that item needs replacing. Otherwise, you can get rid of it or sell it.

    • @blancabt
      @blancabt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I guess 2021 is not the best year to reconsider what you haven't worn in the past year... especially after gaining a couple of pounds 🙈 But I do see the point and I like the idea of using labels and reviewing your wardrobe after one year.

Honestly as a fellow spreadsheet nerd, use one. Create a spreadsheet with it all in and note how many times you wear it. So far this year I have stuff I used to wear so much a couple of years ago but found lately that I have other items I'm drawn too. Will hold my hands up and say that with Northern Weather being able to layer stuff becomes a must do making it harder. Or at least that's my excuse for having many jumpers and hoodies. 😂

RE: "what's the point if you already own it?" I think the idea isn't necessarily to do 333 4 times a year for ever more. I think it's a thing to do if you want to reset your brain with respect to clothes shopping, and then you go back to a bigger wardrobe.
so...the blue stripy shorts come back after the challenge, sit over winter and come out next year. at that point (if you want a smaller wardrobe going forward) you get rid of things you don't like and feel better about not replacing them than you would if you hadn't done this.

As a native German speaker I really enjoyed hearing you practise! I rarely see English speakers learn German so it was super interesting to hear your accent, I was quite impressed with your pronunciation btw!! :)
One tip for getting the long ü-sound right: say "ee" (like in "see") and then round your lips (like when you’re saying "o") without changing anything about the tongue position. The vowels are produced exactly the same, only the ee-sound with unrounded lips and the ü-sound with rounded lips :)

Loved this! Really interesting seeing your first time capsuling perspective. I do a seasonal wardrobe and am not strict on items but try not to double up if say I have two black jumpers and always reach for the same one because it goes with the same things but I prefer it. :) but I might say keep the other one in storage (which for me is my chest of drawers!) so if there ever is a situation where I want that one instead or if I use it more often in a different season so it can be part of that wardrobe it’s still available to me :)
Having only clothes that I love and that are seasonally appropriate in my wardrobe definitely removes some of that “what to wear” feeling, and when I DO get that feeling it’s normally a good indicator that either I need to do a clothes wash cause I’m running low OR that there is a gap in my wardrobe so then when I buy something it’s thought through with the intention of filling that gap.
E.g. I recently realised that my autumn & winter wardrobes are great, but my spring / UK summer wardrobe doesn’t really have any transitional pieces or clothes for the cooler days where you still want to dress nicely & in more summery colours cause all I had for those days was jeans and t-shirts. So I’ve got a couple of more summery tops and some long-legged cute dungarees which have filled the gap nicely :)

Gosh I wish I could do seasonal wardrobe, but S. Tx is quite impractical. You never know what season you're waking up to! I have paired down my wardrobe to things I really love (or at least think I do) and am going to do the tag it and re-evaluate it after a year thing to see if I truly wear everything in my wardrobe like I think I do. I know over the past year, I've really figured out I want to be comfortable over anything else, so that's what I want to keep in my wardrobe. Anyways... this is inspiring and fun to watch you go through. :)

    Yes for a seasonal wardrobe!!
I did this a few years ago, and because there are 4 very distinct seasons where I live, I basically did the challenge for each season (does that make sense?) I put everything that didnt make it in in a separate place and reviewed them at the end of the year to see if there was anything I really missed and wanted (there honestly wasnt much). I havent added much to my wardrobe since then and I recently put all my clothes back in one place. And honestly its overwhelming to me now to have all my clothes in one place, especially seeing like knit sweaters in the summer ... like why is it there 😂

I do something a bit crazy and keep track of my clothes and how much I wear them with a spreadsheet. I try to wear everything at least 30 times before I get rid of it even if I don't love it and I try to hit $1 cost per wear. This has helped me see what I truly do tend to wear and what I don't and buy future clothes accordingly.

I've been doing a sort of similar challenge for myself but looser. I went away to visit friends a few times this month and I found myself bringing clothes that I was really excited about and like had such a fun time putting together outfits with them. So what I decided to do when I got back is go through all my clothes and only have the ones in my drawers and closet that I'm actively excited about and want to wear in the next month. I've already felt way more interested in my clothes and creative with the outfits I've been putting together. My plan is that when I get tired of these clothes I'll make myself a new "capsule wardrobe" to wear for a while. I have a lot of clothes that I really like but don't know how to wear and this has been forcing me to bring them into circulation and experiment.

You're so cute. The woman who created Project 333, picked 33 as a random number. I LOVE having a capsule wardrobe but the number needs to be personal. I find it easier to think about mini capsules... like a capsule for workout, a capsule for day, a capsule for night, etc. Then consider there's about 91 days per quarter. If you repeat daily outfits three times a week, you'll need 30 outfits. So just work on figuring out 30 outfits. And you'll repeat some items. It takes time to perfect what works for you. Also, probably the first accomplishment will be just figuring out which colors are more your colors. So when you shop, even if you're attracted to a color, it might not be what you need, so you won't waste money. Great job!

I inadvertently ended up with a seasonal wardrobe. I also found that moving house to a MUCH smaller place with MUCH less storage made me have to be really picky about what I actually like and want to keep. I also, inadvertently, made my own challenge: wear ITEM until it falls apart and cannot be mended/ adapted, decide if I want to replace it. Usually, I either had something in my collection that would work to replace it anyway OR I just didn't want to replace it.

About the shorts - it's usually recommended when you have shorts you love so you put some away. The idea is that you get bored, so this makes you miss clothing and so you'll want to wear them in a year or two.
I used to be so minimalist with 27 pieces of clothing (excluding workout and pajamas). But now I have closer to 70 between loungewear (cus pandemic), workwear (cus office work), and all the winter/cute date/warm weather clothes. I wear everything but it does feel excessive. Personally if it's in good condition and relative stylish I'll donate it. Someone will likely enjoy it more than me and I have too much 😂

I was so confused because I got german ads on this video before it started! (used to ads in my own language) But given the sponsor it makes sense. Definitely caught my attention. But nice video, much enjoyed :D

Love a capsule wardrobe (I did a bright capsule for spring on my blog!), but don’t love arbitrary numbers for them. A guideline or suggested range, sure, but a specific number would be frustrating for me.
    Good luck!

ayyy, ich lerne Deutsch auch! btw, I recently discovered the joy of making your own clothes! I'm currently sewing my own dungarees from an old bedsheet and it's so much fun figuring out how clothes work! it'd be fun to see you give it a try! :D

I have one addition: Germans take things literally! When you say 'see you later' in English, you mean 'bye'. When you say 'Bis später!', you mean you'll meet the same person again that very day. Saying 'bis später' when you just want to say 'Auf Wiedersehen' or 'tschüss' can be very confusing to the recipient of said message. I know I'm a bit of a language/pragmatics nerd, but this is an expression all learners of German should understand. Hth 😊

I'm German and I was giggling the whole way through the German learning part of this video haha! First, you're doing great, Hannah! It's amazing to me how in some words you do not have the slightest accent. And I get it, it must be so difficult for an English native speaker to conjugate verbs! 💙 The clothing part was also great lol!

I definitely agree that if you really love a piece of clothing and know you will wear it, it's better off being with you than going to charity :) minimalism is great but sometimes it doesn't hurt to have a few extra clothes, especially if it makes you happy and stops you buying more!

  • @irenea819

I have recently been thinking a lot about all my clothes, I have the same feeling of "I have nothing to wear" even though my dresser is full. I've also been consicious of whether or not Im actually wearing all my clothes, or if there are a bunch of items in my wardrobe that I never want to wear. So what I've done is make a spreadsheet where I can make a note of what Im wearing everyday: I make a note of how many times I've worn a certain item in a certain month and calculate an aproximate cost per use. I want to make sure I am actually using the clothing I have, or if it would be better used by someone else (donating/selling).
Calculating an approximate cost per use, has also really helped me put the price of an item of clothing in perspective, I frequently think "a 20€ tshirt? - that is too much" when in reality if I wear that shirt 20 times (ideally more), its only 1€ a wear, and for a tshirt I love, thats a pretty good deal.
I love a good spreadsheet, so I took a basic template I found on google and am changing it to fit my needs. I want to add in extra data about how I feel wearing certain piece of clothing, ie. "does it spark joy?"
Also, I live in Spain, and here seasonal wardrobe is the norm, at least it is for the people I know! So every spring, I put away my jumpers and coats; and in late autumn I put away my shorts and summer dresses - it does wonders for actually being aware of what you own and not clogging your dresser with every single piece of clothing you have.

I love that you're learning German! Are you interested in it because of your German heritage?
As a German native speaker I can tell you that your pronunciation is really good. And just a tip: don't give up on learning the lanuguage even when it gets hard. I know German grammar can be excruciatingly complicated but it's worth it. One day you'll be able to read German poetry or literature and realise that the German language can be quite beautiful and flowery.
    Love from Berlin, Germany!

the grammar is SO complicated! I'm learning on Duolingo (224 days strong) and I'm stuck on a particular Conjunctions module. I just can't wrap my head around it. But yes, it's good to keep learning and if you hit a roadblock, to strengthen what you already know

Hannah’s ability to count her clothes is my ability to figure out how old I am. I was at 22 and then there was a bad job that took two years (so they don’t really count) I lived in that one ** rental for one year and then there was a year of nothing, so 22+2 😊

I’ve never managed to have a summer and a winter wardrobe. I’ve needed item which could have been easier considering summer or winter especially given the uk weather. Personally I will say I am currently sorting my wardrobe so the number items I have fit nicely in it and my draws. I would say as long as the space you have for clothes is functioning properly, you can see, access stuff, they fit and you love them the number isn’t important.

I didn’t do the 30 items but I did go through my clothes and all the clothes I’m keeping I have turned inside out so at some point I can go through my clothes and find the ones I didn’t were .

I do a seasonal wardrobe and put away the clothes that aren't appropriate for that season in vacuum seal bags under the bed, so they're never far away! my rule when switching over is to go through every item i own, and if i haven't worn it that season then it goes.

You can get in touch with On Loan and ask to buy the blue dress, you don't have to keep renting it! I think the reason it isn't up for sale is that you have it out, it seems like they only offer items for sale that they physically have at any one moment.

I'd love to make a seasonal wardrobe, but I wear T-shirts all year round with or without a sweater on top ^^ it's always too hot inside.
I need to declutter my wardrobe, but I'm having the problem that I can't find good clothes now that I try to avoid fast fashion... so my wardrobe keeps shrinking and my "spark joy" clothes are getting old and I'm left with the ugly but good quality clothes that I don't like.
