  • In today's video I review the Invicta Pro Diver Ref. 8926OB. An automatic watch from one of the most divisive Swiss watch brands out there. I also share a used book haul of some wonderful books on the history of watches as well as a new book about Oris, one of my favourite Swiss brands. I also discuss the importance of the history of horology to understand appreciate our hobby of watches to a deep level. I end the video with an unboxing and giving my initial impressions of a new military inspired Navi Harbor watch from Timex.

    Brilliant unbiased review and I couldn't agree more with this statement.

      Raymond Foster - Why are you generalising? It may have a terrible rating but that doesn't mean all watches that come out of the factory are faulty, nor does it mean that the Seiko NH35 SII movement in this specific model should be discredited just because it sits inside an Invicta branded watch when it is actually one of the most robust entry-level mechanical self-winding movements out there.
      I don't agree with Invicta's marketing strategies of faux price discounts and am also not surprised by this information. Perhaps I've been lucky to never need to contact their customer service myself. Additionally, I really dislike their huge and ostentatious models.
      However, there is no denial that Invicta gets such a bad rep because it's mainstream to give it a bad rep especially by arrogant watch-snobs. Squale, dozens of other micro brands and even famous Swiss Brands like Tag Heuer have completely ripped off Rolex design at some point in history but when Invicta does it with an entry level model it becomes treasonous and unacceptable.
      "They are the opposite of robust & reliable" - Strongly disagree. You've probably never owned an Invicta, especially the model reviewed in this video. I've had mine for almost 2 years and have gone scuba-diving with it and use it as a daily beater on all sorts of situations without any issues. So don't try and lecture others on something pretending to be an authority on the subject if you have no personal experience with it.

      Allan Ribas The quality control is suppose to be bad and i heard of a few not working after only three months and that is besides the ugly logo and the name wrote on the side which looks really tacky, personally i would not have one for free.

      cmon...........don't know anyone that wouldn't take the 8926 for free. good gosh! Im not a big invicta guy, but I do have 2 grand divers, and not a thing has gone wrong, holds up brilliantly, and is approx. +15 sec per day. Stunning for 99 DOLLAR WATCH!! Not to mention solid end links, decent lume, and not so bad scissor clasp bracelet.

    "People think that cheap or more affordable watches are not horologically significant." One of the reasons I've come to appreciate this watch channel. I like your attitude, TGV, and your understanding and sensitivity to watches of every kind whether they be costly or affordable. Your argument goes much deeper, of course, in to the very idea of horology and its significance.

    This invicta pro diver was my first automatic watch! I beat it to hell and back for 5 years! Took it in the ocean, pools, shower, hiking and a little bit of everything else! The only reason I don't have it anymore is cause I broke it moving heavy music gear! Their pro diver and grand divers are actually great watches! Of course that price point is insaneeeee for what you get. I think they are great little watches for what they are! They 100% created the passion I have for watches now which is why I'll always have one on my collection.

    Great job :) Two weeks ago the Invicta diver went on sale (Amazon) for $60 and I bought it on a whim. Took out the strap and am now enjoying it immensely with Nato straps - the best beater watch I own :) It's the honeymoon period but I got to say I love it. I'm also really happy to see Timex is getting back to its roots - great looking watch

  • @victorl.9569
    @victorl.9569 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Thanks for this excellent review! I never would have considered the Invicta 8926OB before watching this video, mostly because of the stigma attached to the brand and the blatant copying of the Rolex Submariner. I picked one up during the most recent Amazon prime day and I've been completely blown away. I also own a Seiko SKX009 and an Orient Ray II, and I'm having just as much fun wearing the Invicta Pro Diver. I particularly like that it features handwinding, hacking, and a display case back (a real advantage over both the SKX and Ray II). Its Seiko NH35A movement is terrific and definitely beats my SKX's 7S26 in terms of timekeeping. And what a crisp rotating bezel. For less than half what I paid for either my SKX or Orient Ray II, I got an outstanding new tool watch that really performs.

    That's what I love about your videos, no pretentious conceit, and willing to give any brand a fighting chance. I have no issue with the Pro Diver, but I must admit I sometimes watch that shopping channel just to laugh at the wall clock sized Invictas. I mean come on, some are so huge they'd overwhelm King Kong's wrist.
    I briefly looked at the Timex website while watching this, and ran across five Waterbury models that are 38mm. Darn nice looking time pieces, especially at the price, and I just might pick up one for myself. Thank you sir.

    You approach each watch with an honesty that is both informative and refreshing. You haven't "prejudged" the time piece but honestly and accurately look at it's merits and faults bringing both to the table to allow the viewer to reach his own conclusion. I'm brand new to the hobby but not to life. I'm 57 years old and I remember wearing Timex watches from the time I was about twelve years old. I remember when I was in high school Casio made keyboards and when they came out with their digital watches I bought one. I have been looking at and buying some Timex watches. I already have a weekender and will probably buy the watch you just introduced in this video. I think watches are fun and make me happy. Yes I am getting some very nice watches but I also want to have some that just make me smile because.... well just because and to me that in many cases is a Timex! Thank you again for a GREAT video. You make me want to see what you bring out next!

    I've had a prodiver for +10 years and it keeps great time and has been put through the ringer. Fantastic value... Invicta should do more back-to-basics watches like this rather than the garish monstrosities they focus on.

    Invicta brought me into the watch scene, and I am thankful for that. If it weren't for them, I either wouldn't be wearing a watch at all or I'd be buying watches from Wal-Mart or something. The watch that I've had for the longest time was one I bought at Wal-Mart, a Timex Expedition T45171.

      That is exactly why I think the Invicta haters are wrong about the brand. Don't get me wrong, many of their watches are too gaudy for me, but they are the gateway mechanical watch for so many men. The nh35a seiko movement is pretty amazing for a sub $100 mechanical watch. Timex is another brand that gets overlooked, and the weekender is a nice Quartz watch whose influence shouldn't be overlooked.
      For me Timex was my first, second, and third watch, followed by a couple Pulsar dress watches in my 20s. I was in my 40s when I got my first mechanical watch, and it was an inexpensive Seiko.

    I didn't even know watches had a community. I'm not surprised, I just didn't know. I've always had a thing for pocket watches. I own a few cheaper ones ( all walmart ) I bought an invicta pro diver a few years ago. I love it personally. I don't really know anything about watches but I love how I feel when I wear it. Its a nice looking watch, I think so anyway. I have no confidence issues what so ever but when I wear my watch I feel like I have a little something. I can't explain it I guess. Anyway I keep finding myself drawn to watches. I had to learn to maintain and how to store it. Its become a hobby. I recently just purchased another invicta. I was just looking around and the I noticed the brand gets a lot of hate. It doesn't bother me though lol. I've never had anyone call me out for my watch, and if I did I would have to laugh at them. There's really point in my rambling I guess. Just wanted to say I think I'm one of those people you were referring to. Its definitely been a gateway watch to me. Granted, I don't have much money. I have two children so buying a watch for myself just isn't something I do often. I love the watches invicta makes :)

    I appreciate your honesty and lack of watch snobbery in not only your review, but in your channel overall. Most channels like The Time Teller bash on brands and the people that wear them if it's something they don't like which unfortunately leads to incredibly biased reviews and may cause people to miss out on a good beater watch or gateway watch to get them started. I was blessed with a beautiful Rolex air master by my uncle, and I have a Tudor black bay as well as several Seikos and Citizens. I also own several Invicta watches, and, for their price it's very difficult to beat them. Especially if you are trying to get into watches or if you need a good watch for doing yard work or something you don't want to get your nicer watches dirty doing. Again, I appreciate your content and your dedication and love for timepieces and the watch community, good on you sir. You've got a sub from me!

    Great video! Yes, you really can't beat that watch for what you get for the price. Most people like the look of the Sub and that's why that particular model and related models are so popular. I've had my 9937 for 14 years now. It has the 2824-2. It's still going strong even after a pretty nasty motorcycle crash. Had to be repaired because it took quite a shock from initial impact but a watchmaker had it running great again in no time. That was back in 08 and it's been running great since then. The bezel is all gashed up but it has battle scars! The lume is still working really well. Not Seiko strong but I can still read it easily in the middle of the night and until morning. That Invicta was my everyday watch for a long time. I have so many watches now that I don't wear it much and I also have it on a leather strap but I still get it safe in my 'watch" drawer lol. Cheers my friend!

    Great review of the Invicta. You're spot on, the brand is tarnished. And I'm shocked that this review was not only positive, but almost glowing as far as the quality. So it's clear that the company is well within its capacity to be like an Orient or Seiko in terms of refinement and overall quality control. The real question is - what does the company want to be? Does it want to be the oversized, glam watch "Bro" company, or the quality homage watch company it's clearly capable of being? Is it feasible to be both?

    • @eddyborges2075
      @eddyborges2075 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CrampedStyle I think his shock of Invicta doing what the Japanese did to eta Swiss movements. Hacking and handwinding at a super low price point. I'm slightly impressed myself considering you need to spend a few hundred to get that on a seiko watch is almost laughable. The brands stigma will keep this piece relegated to obscurity.

    • @stevef1840
      @stevef1840 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see Invicta as more of a "gateway" brand. Sure they make tons of gaudy pieces, however they also get people into mechanical watches via the fashion angle. As far as fashion watches go they tend to use quality steel instead of base metals, and use quality movements like Miyota, Seiko, and in some cases various swiss movements. I know if they didn't offer the 8926, I wouldn't have a mechanical on my wrist right now, opting for a Casio Duro. I'm not at that point in my life where I can spend much more than $100 on a watch at a time.
      My biggest grudge with them is their pricing games. If they didn't pull that crap, they might have actually been a big brand by now instead of a niche brand.

    • @watchscentsny-2150
      @watchscentsny-2150 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      CrampedStyle Orient and Seiko are in-house. Invicta owns no production facilities, save for the recently acquired Glycine. So, that means souced movements of Swiss and Asian quartz and mechanical movements. Invicta uses contract watch case manufacturers and uses various final assembly houses in various parts of the far East.

    • @ZesPak
      @ZesPak 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing is, as far as oversized glam watch "Bro" companies go, Invicta is top dog. Someone has to cater for them. Just look on youtube, a number of channels with Invicta guys having several $500 Invictas.
      As a brand, they are probably not doing bad.
      That said, I love the Diver Pro. Mine is over 8 years now, if it ever goes, I'll buy a second in a heartbeat. For me it's the definitive beater watch. I often get comments when heavy lifting/working in construction that I should be careful for my nice watch.
      As TGV points out, it looks worth well over the 75 EUR I paid for it. Oh, biggest downside for me is the cyclops. I'm no fan, and it's the only part of my watch that has gathered some marks over the years.

    20 years ago, Invicta made some nice, tasteful, fairly original designs. I still wear some of their older watches. I appreciate your giving the Pro Diver a fair review, judging it on its own merits. I've seen comparison reviews where it's being judged straight up against a Rolex Sub, which is a silly premise. Your videos are great fun and very educational.

    I think you could also add to pros that it annoys watch snobs :-) I think that is a smart choice for those who like a watch that looks like that and don't want to invest in a high end piece. Being offended about mimicing the Sub look should be left to Rolex lawyers. It is a multi million company perfectly capable of defending itself.

    Just getting into watches and have watched so many channels and yours is the first I've sub'd. The attitude of "whatever brings you joy" is a great watch is so inviting in a community that, so far, seems to be very snobbish. You're the first to evaluate watches on their own merits and not compare a $100 piece to the standards of a $1,000+ piece.
    Invicta got me into watches just recently when my uncle who collects them gave me one. That night I ordered another online and I just ordered one tonight with "orchid" (purple) and gunmetal finish. I enjoy the wide range of sizes, colors, and so on. As a bigger guy (6'2" / 240lbs) I like having the larger 40-50mm range of watches that don't feel flat, miniscule, and dainty on my arm. I'm not a fan of the giant russian divers but the pro diver and such I do enjoy. I've recently went and pulled my grandfather's watches out and my son (9yo) and I cleaned them up and started researching them. One of them, and the name slips my mind, is from the 70s and is made by the company who, if I read correctly, invented the battery powered watch. That blew out minds and was so cool.
    Anyways, enough rambling, just wanted to say that, from a noob, thank you for your videos. You are an excellent ambassador for the watch enthusiast community.

    Hey TGV,
    I work for INVICTA currently in NY. I totally agree with what you said. Especially the pros, cons and their history. They have also Purchased 3 other watch companies to create the INVICTA Watch Group Inc which expands their selection. They purchased S. Coifman, Glycine and Technomarine. The watches I have purchased so far working here is their S. Coifman watches. They are absolutely beautiful and unique to their design. Also Vintage Invicta line is also something different. I love your channel, you taught me so much about watches that really help me sell the watches in my store. Plus also being the head of Service allowed me to open and look at each invicta and enjoy watches even more. Thank you again for reviewing INVICTA and thank you for being neutral and being thorough.
