Every so often someone says exactly what I've been thinking, and you just did it. Pedals are effects. Bingo. So glad I'm not bonkers. Give me a wah, a fuzz and an amp with reverb and tremolo and I'm done. No pedalboard, no power supply (just batteries) and no cables getting tied up in knots and tripping me over. I still like watching That Pedal Show though... :-)
Only more recently, I started to follow your work. High 5 man! Great guitarist, with a great sound, tone and feeling. Why do people need to make so many comparisons...!? You're top of top! Period.
Just got to see you for the first time at Pomeroy on the 18th. KILLER!! Best power trio rock I've heard since '75. Sure hope you same 3 guys stick together and keep blastin it out. I've been playing resophonic guitar for about 35 years but I was a rocker as a teenager. You guys take me back. Started playing electric guitar a couple years ago...better late than never! Hope to see you again soon!!
JD Simo has been my inspiration for awhile now.phrasing,technique,tone......too many admirations to list.id give anything to get one good hour face to face lesson with this guy.ive been playing 25 years and can't touch this guy.hes a powerhouse.and I also believe is far,far better than bonnomassa.
Phil X is a guitar player... This man is a musician. In other words, he knows all kinds of techniques in all kinds of styles, and can play them with feeling, regardless of what situation he is in...
Fabulous playing,JD. The problem with using only an amp for your Overdrive tones,as preferable as it may be,is that we’re not all playing venues that will allow/tolerate a loud amp, however small it is.I’ve played my Diaz-built Deluxe Reverb for 37 years,& have gotten the “turn down” the whole time. Hence, pedals.Fortunately,David Barber makes pedals that react as amp-like as possible,so the knobs on my guitars can work for tone & texture. And let’s face it;it’s in your hands first & foremost!
Some new guitars have names too. Mine is called Trixie McSchnookumheimerschmidt. Thanks for sharing, J.D. . Stay healthy, safe and keep doing what you do 👍
figured this out when i got my first 100 watt tube amp. i heard people talking about it but didn't get it with my earlier smaller amps, it all made sense.
JD , I think you're one of my favourite guitarist now. Great play , tone and feeling with EVERY guitar you used in this year , better than Bonamassa IMHO.
Smokes Bonomasa!!! Bonomassa is one of the most boring guitar players around!!! This guy is the real deal he just needs to write some better songs and he will. "I'd Rather Die in Vain" is brilliant but hes running into the same problem Jeff Beck had in the 60's: lack of great original songs. My god what a player though.
LOL im Italian too, thats great im gonna start saying that i swear in Italian all the time so nobody knows what i'm saying. I'm American-italian but all my people are from the old country.
I use FEW pedals on my Super Reverb, Radial Amp splitter. & on my 50 w mk11 (72) Marshall 0 Pedals. Tone Heaven ! Won't mention guitboxes. 2 attempted home invasions, were enough !! Thawartad via motion sensors & Superior Firepower & Addressing the situation like I MENT IT !! I Seriously can't stand when ppl: play through tons of Reverb ect. Ugggh. Thank you JD for keeping Rock ALIVE !!
Your superb ability to communicate would make for an excellent 2nd career choice if you ever wanted to pursue it!Excellent video!Btw, I live in Lex. Ky & have been to a few shows at Cosmic Charlie's;)
You mentioned the new Supro Dual Tone amp that you are using in this demo and I'm a huge Yardbirds fan too, especially Page era 'Little Games' and first Zeppelin album and I would humbly request a video on your take on Zep I amp tones with one of your Teles and maybe also demo your Supa Fuzz which is similar to Page's '66 SolaSound Tonebender in the course of said clip? Of course Zep I amp tones are loaded with Internet controversy...some are fairly straightforward like the "I Can't Quit You Baby", some are probably dependent on mid-range enhanced mic placement (like say the basic rhythm sound on most of the record-...rhythm tracks on "Good Times Bad Times", basic track on "How Many More Times", basic track on "Communication Breakdown", basic track of "Dazed"...cheers and I hope to catch Simo in Houston someday!
From the thumbnails i thought it was gary moore, after click on this video i thought it was ozzy, haha anyhow this video is just compact with great info for everyone ,thanks man,u r awesome, cheers
So this sounds like underwound alnico 2? Also you know what, you are the first person ever in a guitar demo, to mention the sheer awesome that is middle position and why. You can get more tones out of the middle position than any other. In fact I have used more or less only the middle position my entire life.
JDs phrasing is way more authentic but still personal ,than bonamassas. Bonams phrasing is more like a fusion of a lot of other guys styles. He's still a shit hot player tho!! And nice dude. But I prefer JDs playing for my taste. I think he's going to end up being a famous guitarist.
He already is....love this guy hes got an old soul. Speed dont mean dik , but hes got that too ...but his quest for pure tone well its second to none....and his phrasing ,his intonation his vibrato these skills are the foundation that jd built his house....gotta love jd
JD you're 20 something...I'm 48...but I love your music and playing...don't make the mistake I made thinking I couldn't make it as a musician and wimped out due to fear of where I'd be in the future....
Much better Boreomassa. I have been plugging straight in to my 71 Marshall JMP 50 watt lately. I have always used my vol/tone but when its played through a quality tube amp thats cranked you really get some great dynamics. I'm a P90 guy ive been running my old Casino with Lollar 50's Winds straight in to the marshall and it fucking sings. Or my SG Junior i love 1 pickup really makes you use those controls and alter the way you pick. I still love a strat with a good fuzz face though.
nothing like the older les pauls they sound very angelic when played clean, but when you get your amp to "break up" then stomp on a good germanium pedal.....look out!!!
Speaking of tone controls, you can use them to get a wah wah effect. I cannot atm remember the name of who was known for that but he played with Danny Gatton sometimes
I use my old sgs and my old les paul through my old Marshalls, got three 1972 marshall super leads 100 watts. And a 1970 Marshall major, some old cabinets and i think a 77' hiwatt 50 watt. No pedals, it's all in the fingers and how to control your guitar with these amps.. I never use pedals.. so much better and a real test to see how well you can play through these honest sounding guitars and amps! Sounds good Simo, good sounding burst! my 60' burst sounds quite alike!
A vintage amp especially Marshalls are like instruments themselves. All I use is a reverb pedal and a treble booster but depending what type of room im in I don't even use those half the time.
A 70 Major? That's a rare beast. Blackmore's amp one of my all time favorites. My 50 watter is loud as shit, that's really got to move some air. Nothing like the raw power of a dimed marshall. All you need is a volume and a tone control on the guitar. Yeah you are right those are honest amps but that's how you get the dynamics.
I understand where you are coming from in running the amp flat out and adjusting the guitar ! BUT it becomes very loud and if you play in small surroundings they want to kill you !! That is why OD pedals work as you can get near that sound at lower volumes ..
agreed in the '70's I used to play the clubs with a Twin at about volume 7... now days if I play a Blues Junior I can't even play it up to 7 otherwise the owners complain, audience too
Why so few views? Pedals are an addiction. They never sound as good as the studio manipulated dealer demos do. I got stuck at a blues jam one night without my pedals, no time to set them up, best thing that ever happened to me. Never took my pedals to the jam again. JD is an amazing player, I like his older videos that are more classic blues rock than the swampy stuff of late. Haven't seen much lately......Covid really messed things up for musicians.
i often thought of posting a vid that explains alot of what he's sayin but im just not that good. Alot of this stuff i have just naturally picked up on over 30 years or so....i really use the diff positions to pick on the guitar. i love on old fender amps just setting my guitar on the neck pickup with the guitar treble maxed out and the guitar volume on 6-8, but then diming all the amps knobs and setting the trem to slow and the verb low
What year is your Paul my friend? Both of mine are 2001 one thin taper and one baseball grip they both are over 9 lbs each I'm still wanting some original PAF's for my slim taper girl. The baseball man already has the 81 and 87s .Peace dude that's a sweet Paul ,and the tone is exCellent
great tips, but what he forgets to mention is, that when you have your volume on 7 or so. you can raise or lower the overdrive coming out of the amp with your tone control. at least to some extent.... works great
I love the new album. Amazing! I would love to see you get into specifics on that supro dual tone. Where you set your tone/volume? Do you use one or both channels or set them in parallel etc.?Thanks for the great vids!!
Every so often someone says exactly what I've been thinking, and you just did it. Pedals are effects. Bingo. So glad I'm not bonkers. Would love to see a practice routine vid - great stuff!
Like this guy's sincerity and style.
Very nice chops and tone. Superb playing.
Lovely guy, great video, beautiful guitar, fabulous sound, awesome playing
JD Simo has been my inspiration for awhile now.phrasing,technique,tone......too many admirations to list.id give anything to get one good hour face to face lesson with this guy.ive been playing 25 years and can't touch this guy.hes a powerhouse.and I also believe is far,far better than bonnomassa.
+boogieplex I whole heartidly agree. He blows Bonnomassa away.
Amazing guitarist and wonderful style of playing and instruction. Thank you for posting!
Damm... What happened to Phil ? He kinda Disappeared ??
Fantastic! Love this guys playing
Fantastic lesson! Thanks for answering several questions I had.
Phil X is a guitar player... This man is a musician. In other words, he knows all kinds of techniques in all kinds of styles, and can play them with feeling, regardless of what situation he is in...
Absolutely True Words! Wonderfull played and fantastic sound! Thank you!
Fabulous playing,JD.

Playing straight through the head is the way to go for me. Keeps me honest. This is a great demonstration.... great post.
Wow, great guitar. You really bring out the tone on that Les Paul!! Nice job.
That was a good demonstration and explanation of playing.
JD , I think you're one of my favourite guitarist now. Great play , tone and feeling with EVERY guitar you used in this year , better than Bonamassa IMHO.

I think the same! in Italy we call Him "Bona-merda" (merda = shit )
LOL im Italian too, thats great im gonna start saying that i swear in Italian all the time so nobody knows what i'm saying. I'm American-italian but all my people are from the old country.
walter schivo Music is not a competition.
+Dan L "IMHO"
I really like your honesty and courtesy Simo.
keep the videos coming! Love them!
Obviously, it takes some time to learn how and when to use all these tidbits.
Great video, thanks for sharing your experience!
I use FEW pedals on my Super Reverb, Radial Amp splitter. & on my 50 w mk11 (72) Marshall
0 Pedals.
I like your demo on guitars in the history of sound
Pure gold!
Thanks, man. Hope I can catch you near me
Amazing sustain!!! Great guitar and great playing!
that tone with the volume partly rolled off on the bridge pickup. such a sound.
super nice guy man...met him at a simo show with ace frehley
Your superb ability to communicate would make for an excellent 2nd career choice if you ever wanted to pursue it!Excellent video!Btw, I live in Lex. Ky & have been to a few shows at Cosmic Charlie's;)

great sounding guitar
The old Les Pauls have such great clean sounds. I think Gibson Custom has finally recaptured that sound.
JD keep up the good work
Nice tone demo :)
More soul than ive seen in a guitar player in a loooooong time
damn, this dude can play. got a pretty cool style on those standard meat and potatoes pentatonic licks as well. there's a real rhythm to them
From the thumbnails i thought it was gary moore, after click on this video i thought it was ozzy, haha anyhow this video is just compact with great info for everyone ,thanks man,u r awesome, cheers
Lol me too😂😂
Which knob controls the Cosmic Phase Inversion, aka the "Bonamassa knob"? God, he's good.
Lovely vid dude!!!
Great player and that burst is a monster. Holy shit, great amp also.
I love the video, but please flip your phone on the side next time!
A lot of great tips from .”a master player”
Hey I’m from Lexington Kentucky
nice...
Cool demo thanks
God damn that les paul sings holy shit
It's the player not the guitar, a great guitarist can make any guitar sound good
So this sounds like underwound alnico 2? Also you know what, you are the first person ever in a guitar demo, to mention the sheer awesome that is middle position and why. I was thinking exactly the same 🤔😉
JD you're 20 something...I'm 48...but I love your music and playing...don't make the mistake I made thinking I couldn't make it as a musician and wimped out due to fear of where I'd be in the future....
Great video. Please come to Charlotte! How loud are those Marshalls?
Dude you rock
Much better Boreomassa. I have been plugging straight in to my 71 Marshall JMP 50 watt lately. agreed !!.
Thanks 1967 Jim Morrison

Jace Meldrum Arlen Roth?
Youre good bro 🤘😎✨
I use my old sgs and my old les paul through my old Marshalls, got three 1972 marshall super leads 100 watts. And a 1970 Marshall major, some old cabinets and i think a 77' hiwatt 50 watt. You can't honestly say it's all fingers when you need a real burst and the rarest amps in existence ;)
Keep em coming!
Great, I will try this on my '58 burst (that I will never own) . ;)
I understand where you are coming from in running the amp flat out and adjusting the guitar ! BUT it becomes very loud and if you play in small surroundings they want to kill you !! That is why OD pedals work as you can get near that sound at lower volumes ..

What a super chap. Looks rather like Paul Kossoff. :-)
Great vid.
7:01 - the only Clapton solo I like better is his cover of Border Song. If only he had played it on PAFs instead of Lace Sensors.
geeze 240p and your guitar still sounds better than most records, past or present.
J D ..... THE KING of the online demo's. Luv Ya, dude no gay intentions implied .... :-)
Thanks J.D!!!
That guitar sings!
NICE DEMO !
IM IN
Be nice if he made these again, right?
great tips, but what he forgets to mention is, that when you have your volume on 7 or so. you can raise or lower the overdrive coming out of the amp with your tone control. at least to some extent.... works great
I love the new album. Amazing!
I would love to see you get into specifics on that supro dual tone. Where you set your tone/volume? Do you use one or both channels or set them in parallel etc.?Thanks for the great vids!!
any thoughts what he is playing 3:09 - 3:21 ?
He said more useful info for guitarists in this video than you will get out of 15 video's from one of the youtube guitar teachers!
Killer Guitar player
Just use an EQ. Program an EQ with several settings with foot switches to change it with.
JD.........yer the real deal man! the Bomb, the Beast, the Baron! lol.
As George Metropoulos once said.......You play like a man possessed!
Albert's shuffle!!
What clapton solo is that at 6:57
"I Feel Free"
my freind owned 2 of those old gibsons he said they are totally different to the new whats your result of that?
thanks mush.nice one .c.b. aka curriculum bluesae.;-)
Does anybody know what Clapton solo is played around 7:00?
I believe it's "I Feel Free" off the Fresh Cream album
JD you are very inspiring to many. Please don't be an E Hollywood story in 5 years!
Nice! Woof!!
Great tones. Which amp was being used ?
buddybeetle a Supro Dual-Tone. He mentions it in the video...
what gauge of strings do u use..???
You're fucking great!!!!
Yep most of the tone is in the fingers :)
What clapton song is that solo a part of?
I Feel Free by Cream
Dude how did you snag a burst? I know, 8 years too late haha
Was you taking a dump at about 4 minutes in?
GTFOH
How many is "lots"?
😍😍😍😍😎😎😎😎💪💪💪💪💪👍👍👍👍👍 yeahhhhhhhjh
Jim Morrisons' grandson?
