For sure, but they were made with certain materials and in a certain way that basically no one is doing today, and even if you had one made with the same materials and construction, you wouldn't be able to replicate the way the finish, woods, glue, electronics and hardware have aged that really effects the sound heavily. It's all personal taste an what you want to play and hear though.
Ole's Music I'm sure you are joking, but for this who might not know what what that device is (visible next to his right ear at 0:15), it's most probably a hearing device called BAHA (Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid). If you have absolutely zero hearing in an ear due to an injury, surgery or birth defect, a traditional electronic hearing aid won't do anything because there's nothing there to receive the hearing aid's amplified sound. The Baha is an amplifier that conducts sound through the bone of the skull.

My pops worked at Gibson back in the 50’s (Kalamazoo) I look at these and just wonder did he work on them? Did he test them? He is gone now, I close my eyes and listen I can still hear him play his Les Paul. It was a gold top. Color doesn’t matter much only the sound of the music that resonates from amps. Turn it up a little bit!
I just got a VOS ‘64 335 from Gibson custom. It’s a damn fine instrument. My old man has his original ‘65 335. Besides the obvious age and shit I can hardly tell the difference. I find that people that complain about Gibson just can’t save up the money to get one. It’s a lot of resentment and jealousy.
I have 5 of them. Goldtop, SG, single cut Jr and doublecut Jr. All with P90’s. And a killer Hummingbird. All top notch quality and sound. Saving for a ES next.
I tried to keep an open mind and not favor one year or another when watching this video. The 1959 stood out. As soon as I heard it I was "there's that sound".
I bought my first Gibson when i was 15 in 1984 a black SG i paid $750 new, i have bought and sold many Gibson's since but i still have my SG. i bought the EVH Frankie few months ago and i love it almost as much.
First I've heard of different neck angles on these 'bursts. Interesting. The first-year Les Pauls---1952---are the only ones I've heard players and collectors mention the (less than desirable) neck angle.
I played a 1960 for about 30 seconds before the owner said NO NO NO! Not that one! I told him I would never hurt it, and he gave me a couple more minutes. He was selling it for $100,000. I haven't seen him in years and don't know if it was ever sold.
i hope the 'investors' get their money back but I pray good sounding Standards with an 'issue' get into the hands of gifted professional players, or studios that make them available to an Artiste if it is needed. I mean this in the way that many of the World's of most beautiful orchestras( or some of their patrons) keep Stradavari available for those who are educated and gifted enough to let us hear the music that was intended to be played on them.

Pop passed on in 84' granny and grampa sold his burst and his 60s Gibson "V" with the bigsby in a yard sale for likely under $500 (U.S.) FOR THE PAIR... "Thanks Granny!" (Oh . He also had a strat back in 81, don't know the exact yr. But what's the difference.🙃)
Really, the only difference I hear in these old bursts are 1) completely unpotted pickups on the verge of feeding back, 2) moderately high action creating more sound above the fretboard, 3) 10 gauge strings. Other than that, I respect the fact they are 60+ years old and are still around. Can't buy into the hype though. I have played a few. Just lovely old guitars to me. Just my 2 cents.
Hey, you didnt include the '57 Goldtop, its the same as the '58 but not a burst. Also a rocking blues-ish guitar. I wonder if the '57 had a tonal differences from the '59?

The astronomical prices are justified, I think, because there is a finite number of these particular models. These prices should ensure that these guitars are REALLY looked after well. There are plenty of other options available for the performing musician. Although one of these Les Pauls might be considered the holy grail of guitars, for me, personally, it would be a custom coloured mid 50's Stratocaster, in excellent condition.
Russell Parratt I think if I was a professional gigging musician and could afford such an instrument I would play it live and ensure it was out there to be heard, I think it’s a shame that they have been largely resigned these days, I understand the importance and value but if they really are as good as the hype, why wouldn’t you play it as much as possible as often as possible?
I can’t tell the difference between these. I can tell the difference between my 2014 Gibson les Paul custom and my honeyburst les Paul standard the custom sounds perfect the standard... sounds ok

The endless cycle for me started when hearing Tejas, Fandango, and Deguello with Pearly, I have been fortunate enough to have 7 Paul's with no stopping in site, but as for acquiring and original 68 or below unfortunately us normal guys it's just out of reach!
I cringe a bit whenever I hear someone refer to a 58-60 Les Paul as a “Standard”. These were simply known as the Bursts. The “Standard” didn’t exist until 68 when the Les Paul was reintroduced with the Custom.
The custom had been around since 55, the gold tops and bursts where called standards when they were made. The only thing that changed in 68 is they then put the standard name on the truss cover but theyve always been known as a standard
I bought a 1971 Deluxe Dark Cherry Sunburst in 1988 for $375. Had it pro setup, re-varnish back of neck, converted to full humbuckers... the pots were dated 1969, and what the 75 yo music store owner sold as. The serial no was real low '71, who knows, but the color blending was smooth from a deep red to a goldish-amber. The biggest complaint is why Gibson delayed producing the Burst until '71. For many years after '73 they weren't smoothly blended as the late '50's and '71-'73. After acquiring I then sold my '78 Black Beauty. My ex made off with it in 2013. I'm finally looking, and it's gonna cost me a pile of money to replace. I bought the mint '78 Black Beauty from Seattle Guitar Center in '84 for $600, yeah prices are threw the roof anymore.
Just as England is returning antiquities to their countries of origin, they should return all Les Paul's from this guy's collection back to the USA. I will safeguard them.
Yeah nice guitars but the price is a joke no guitar is worth that kind of money. I would rather have a top luthier custom make one for me personally and for me would be a better instrument. Their sound isn't as unique as these LP guru's would have you believe

You are mistaken, as evidenced by the fact that this guitar IS worth that kind of money. The price point is not determined by their sound but in fact by supply and demand.
@@lovesgibson The made up mysticism behind old LP's is more like claiming no car drives better than a '67 mustang. The metal used in the doors was forged in siberia and aged 12 months so no other steel today is stronger, the radio was made out of military grade surplus parts so it's better than new radios today could ever be, this mustang was used by a famous guy in a movie so that means it drives faster cuz it just has somethin special to it. If collectors would just admit they like old stuff and feel a sense of pride acquiring rare things that's fine but it gets irritating when people claim they actually sound or play any better than a guitar you could buy new today for a 10th the price. Making it "not worth it" to the people who are not easily fooled into placing higher perceived value on something based on marketing and superstition.
Great to see a collector who can actually PLAY for once! This guy RIPS!
What I like about Phil Harris is that he's a collector but also a keen player, which is not always the case.

Those old Les Pauls have a hollow/chalky sound that's very difficult to reproduce on the newer models.
