Zidane was not an attacker, he was a midfielder, scoring wasn't necessarily his main function in a football match. The beautiful game is not only about scoring, it is obviously the most important thing on it, but that ain't it all
IMO better to call him a playmaker. He did attack but he was masterful at involving everyone around him and brilliant with timing and his weighted touches.

I remember I was 13 and I was watching the World Cup, this was a big game, I told my friend that France was going to win, he just laughed and said that there was no way. When we saw what Zidane did in that game, there were no words. I think that was the moment that I fell in love with football. I could not believed someone could play like that. As Barca fan now, I can say that Zidane is one of the best player I have seen in my life. Obviously, I’ve seen Messi, there is no one him above him. But Zidane was the first super talent I saw.

I have seen in slow replay what he does at 4:44. Here you can barely realize how amazing is what he did (that's what is Zidane all about, making amazing things look simple in the flow of the game). While he puts the ball up, he actually uses the bottom of this foot to control the ball as it goes down...but the ball just stopped right under his foot, it does not even do a bounce, Zidane litteraly asked the ball to just stand below his foot after he trowed it high...and the Ball said, OK you are Zidane, I will obey. Pure magic! If you have the occasion to watch this on slow motion from a close angle, it is worth it.

I often think what is it that Zidane so good. I’ve boiled it down to a few things: 1) of course his ability to control the ball as he wishes. First touch 2) his ability to read the game and control the pace of the game 3) his absolute confidence in his abilities 4) his ability to read other players weight transfer and move accordingly with no wasted movements. He works out where the player can’t go and that’s where he goes 😂 5) his composure, no matter the pressure. He’s never looked flustered 6) his vision, his ability to see where everyone will be in 2 seconds, 5 seconds later. 7) his creative movements that makes him unpredictable. I remember I was 13 and I was watching the World Cup, this was a big game, I told my friend that France was going to win, he just laughed and said that there was no way. When we saw what Zidane did in that game, there were no words. I think that was the moment that I fell in love with football. I could not believed someone could play like that. As Barca fan now, I can say that Zidane is one of the best player I have seen in my life. Obviously, I’ve seen Messi, there is no one him above him. But Zidane was the first super talent I saw.
I still remember watching this match live. I was absolutely shell-shocked as to how any player can dominate this Brazilian side with full authority. Though I was supporting Brazil, Zidane was all around the park and tackling every Brazilian with his brilliant playmaking skills.

I have seen in slow replay what he does at 4:44. Here you can barely realize how amazing is what he did (that's what is Zidane all about, making amazing things look simple in the flow of the game). While he puts the ball up, he actually uses the bottom of this foot to control the ball as it goes down...but the ball just stopped right under his foot, it does not even do a bounce, Zidane litteraly asked the ball to just stand below his foot after he trowed it high...and the Ball said, OK you are Zidane, I will obey. I often think what is it that Zidane so good. I’ve boiled it down to a few things:
1) of course his ability to control the ball as he wishes. First touch
2) his ability to read the game and control the pace of the game
3) his absolute confidence in his abilities
4) his ability to read other players weight transfer and move accordingly with no wasted movements. He works out where the player can’t go and that’s where he goes 😂
5) his composure, no matter the pressure. He’s never looked flustered
6) his vision, his ability to see where everyone will be in 2 seconds, 5 seconds later.
7) his creative movements that makes him unpredictable. If the defender commits, he just pulls something out that you would never expect.
8) his strength and stamina

Never seen anyone put as good weight on the ball as Zidane. It made him the best player I’ve ever seen.

You know some people ask “what’s one moment that changed your life?” Well for me this was it. I was 11 yrs old with a slight interest in football. I cared about it but enough. This game changed my life. Please think about who Zidane is doing this to: Cafu, Ronaldo, Kaka - some of the best in the world in their position. What an incredible footballer I was lucky enough to watch live on my tv.

This guy is actually the most underrated player of all time.. he is considered really good, but still that's underrating him.. definitely top 3 player of all time..
i imagine most see him as the greatest midfielder of all time, so not sure if that is really underrated.
The pecking order was Pele, Mardonna, then Zidane. Now Messi is no.1 and Ronaldo is in the top 3.
