I agree. Eva is amazing and technically, Rachel is a better and more powerful singer than Isay. But in this particular duet, Isay's interpretation is spot on. Just look at the pain and anguish in her face. You can almost feel the sadness and bitterness of the life she's living. Don't forget that she won the contest as "Miss Saigon", an unflattering victory. Besides, Eva's and Rachelle's voices are somewhat similar but Lea's and Isay's voices display a beautiful contrast that makes their duet unique. IMHO, this is the best interpretation of this song. The second best is when Lea sang it alone in her audition with Schonberg accompanying her on the piano. Lea's voice just sends you to a different universe. She's out of this world.
i agree with you. Besides Isay is already older in this performance. When she did it originally in London she was a very powerful singer and it was an unforgettable performance as Gigi. The original London recording shows that Isay is still the best Gigi and Lea is of course the best ever KIM.

I think that Rachelle can belt this song out like no tomorrow and that’s great. But Isay emotes so much better and is so unique in the way she delivers each phrase. Rachelles Gigi is angry and acts before she thinks but Isay portrays a Gigi that has been beaten down so many times that she doesn’t wholeheartedly believe that her dream will ever actually come true but tries nevertheless attempting to start a new life even though she knows nothing will come of her efforts almost as if she has to convince herself that something more has to come out of selling her body to these strange men to keep going. She still tries and that to me is what makes Isay performance more heartbreaking

Some people do this and it really agitates me: They idolize the stars of the revival so much that they think it is okay to underestimate the original cast but if someone says that they don't like the revival cast, they jump into attack mode. Is it weird that the lyrics a little more materialistic in this version? Unpopular opinion: but the lyrics in the revival seemed more focused on leaving Saigon and having a happier life in New York instead of focusing on things that are IN New York. And I do think that the revival’s lyrics are better. That being said, I love Lea and Isay’s performances.

Voices and comparisons aside, I find the background so hard to watch. Just seeing Lea as Kim getting....... *that* done to her by the drunk GIs is just....... it’s so hard to watch..... then Kim is ushered to a chair by Gigi and the other girls and she’s still recovering from a scuffle that two of the GIs are having over her is.... must protect this child....

I think Gigi is in her mid to late 20's no older than 28. Gigi has been around for a while and she has that "No Bullshit 20 year old give me this now." attitude. Is it weird that the lyrics a little more materialistic in this version? Unpopular opinion: but the lyrics in the revival seemed more focused on leaving Saigon and having a happier life in New York instead of focusing on things that are IN New York. And I do think that the revival’s lyrics are better. That being said, I love Lea and Isay’s performances.
