Very thankful I happened to watch Lesmiz 10th anniversary and noticed Lea which led to other discoveries and then Miss Saigon. All outside the Philippines in the era when musical theatre isn't popular where I came from.

something.great she's still singing. She started when she was what 6, now she's 44, took care of her voice well and she still sound as if she never aged. You can search her name here on YT.
We are a witness to her actual genius as she flits and scans the notes of a song she had never practiced before. She could read and identify notes in a single moment with precision and perfect pitch. Her talent goes beyond just the art of singing, and into the art of music itself. She is an underrated treasure.
Rehearsing a score prima vista is one of the primary skills when you're taught music. That's not to say she's not exceptional, because for someone her age she performed this score prima vista to a degree that's performance-worthy for others. The skill itself however is a novice skill.
Not too sure about that. This is most likely a staged part of the '89 audition to Miss Saigon and the earliest performance I can find with Lea playing Eponine anywhere notable is Broadway in '93. It appears she was Eponine in London in '95/'96
Mistake? You dared to mention mistake? She just heard the song for the first time, was able to sing it perfectly for her third try and was able to finish the whole song just buy reading it from the music sheet. He doesn't even have to teach her everything, she got it. After that, they gave her a new piece to sing and she sung it perfectly without them having to teach her. She's a genius.
What this video cuts out is how the creators searched high and low for their Kim - the US, UK, Thailand, Vietnam, before landing in the Philippines and finding a spectacular young woman named Lea. Their reaction here speaks volumes. It's like they knew immediately in that instant that a star had been born.
Would it be wrong to say I am so glad she didn't pursue her pre-med studies when she got the role of Kim? Because hell yeah I am. This voice deserves to be heard by the world.
I dont think that she only has that amazing voice but she had to memorize that lyrics on the spot infront of judges which if it was me id already forgotten the first word.
Here are some remarks from the people behind Miss Saigon after Lea auditioned and got the part of Kim. “We all welled up with emotion because we knew, for the first time in a long audition process, that Miss Saigon could be done. She unlocked the door to the show.” - Vincent Liff, one of the show’s casting directors “Until we went to Manila and heard Lea sing our songs, we never thought that we would find Kim. She is the most amazing and intuitive professional of her age that I have ever met.” - Alain Boublil To familiarize Lea with a song(just not sure which particular song), Schönberg played it 3 times. There were alterations in each version. Lea: “Which version do you want me to sing?” Mackintosh: “She remembered all 3 versions! That’s uncanny! I’ve never come across it in a performer before. It’s a gift!”
If I could sing like that I would give up college too! She was on her way to being a pre-med student, but played Kim in Miss Saigon instead. And then went on to sing in every concieveable musical in all the world! She was the best Eponine in Les Miz. Her voice is always pitch perfect!! How can she do that in every performance?!!?! Talent from heaven is the only explanation.
I did. We did Miss Saigon in our musical theatre back in high school. Since the time we’ve watch this, up until now, I still love it and always go back to hear this masterpiece💕
Her calmness and confidence is incredible. I thought she is with Mr Schonberg but as the video panned to other, there were 3 other guys staring at her. How could she able to sing that piece without getting intimidated is something to admire. Could the Philippine government make her a national artist?
A lot of people seem to be (pleasantly) surprised with her accent. Prior to being cast in Miss Saigon, Lea had been performing with Repertory Philippines since she was 7. It's the country's premiere Theatre Company that do mostly American and British plays and musicals. I've watched quite a number of their performances and when it's a British play, they use British accent. The same goes when it's American. So it comes as to no surprise that a lot of Filipino theatre actors can easily adapt to different accents.
Dear God what a GIFT - her voice, her smile. She's the total package. How the panel kept from bursting into tears or jumping up and down I'll never know. They were thinking "SIGN THAT GIRL UP! WE FOUND HER!" Breathtakingly beautiful - false starts, errors and all - pitch perfect :)
Now i know why lea salonga is a legend. She's not singing with her vocals, she's singing with her emotions. And her emotions are able to connect the listeners to the story inscribed in the song
With their search for Kim worldwide and a few hundreds or maybe thousands had auditioned, their last place to land was the Philippines. Although, maybe they didn't intend to search / go in the Philippines (they did anyway) luckily, they found the right petite girl who is fit for broadway. Truly amazing young girl with a lot of talents at tender age. I guess original Kim is incomparable. Miss you Miss Lea. She looks very simple here, just maybe a Johnson's baby powder on her face.
From what i know.. They search in London then in the US.. And most of the ladies who auditioned that passed their standards were either from the Philippines or has a filipino blood that's why they decided why not search directly in the Philippines & that's where they found Lea. You can watch the making of miss saigon, while looking at the resume of the ladies who auditioned, one of the makers, i think that's Cameron who says she's also from the Phil.. That started it all.
Ann B. You're absolutely correct. I have a copy of the making of Miss Saigon and I know what you're talking about. They auditioning hundreds of girls in London, NY, LA and Hawaii and saw that a lot of the really good ones are either from the Philippines or of Filipino descent. In the Philippines, they not only found Lea but 15 other members of the Original London Cast were flown to London including the original Mimi and Kim understudy (Monique Wilson), Gigi (Isay Alvarez) and the current Engineer in the London revival (Jon-Jon Briones), among others.
Exactly! i mean i don't think they'll look too far if they already found Kim nearby.. and the Philippines is one country that almost everyone can sing, according to David Foster "The land of great singers" ..and let me quote Patty Austin " The greatest singers that I hear around the world, always tend to be from the Philippines" Even the revival cast of miss saigon are full of Filipino talents including the main cast Kim, alternate & understudy KIm, Gigi & engineer and the ensemble. after the cast changed, the new Gigi also a Filipino. Lea Salonga opened up the door not only for Filipino's but to all Asians.
+Nayomi Hokaido At the height of Coup de Etat back in the 80s when the country is trying to oust the Marcos tyranny, the Philippines had a share of fame across the globe just because of that and that was matched with a song or 2 songs about Freedom sang by local celebrities. It was shown on TV news around the world. After their failure of looking for the perfect Kim in Miss Saigon, they were told to go the Philippines as they have heard great singers from that country and that "freedom song" gave them an impact to a such recommendation. The rest is history.
@@SgtSplatter782 That's right. They went to Manila after noticing that most of the good singers have Filipino blood (half filipino) so they went straight to the place.

TITLE: SUN AND MOON Audition lyrics: You are sunlight and I, moon Joined by the gods of fortune Midnight and high noon Sharing the sky We have been blessed You and I You are sunlight and I, moon Joined here brightening the sky With the flame of love Made of sunlight, moonlight. 2:00
Such a high stakes audition. They were not only watching her perform. They were also watching how well she took direction. Scrutiny on two different levels!
Gifted, just gifted! Sight reading and what a musical ear! Her brother,Gerard Salonga also graduated Summa Cum Laude at the prestigious Boston College of Music. I read an article once about Miss Saigon, way back then. They were having a rehearsal, and everybody started singing, the orchestra started playing. But everybody was surprised that Lea started at a different note. It turned out that, everybody was wrong including the orchestra, who started at the wrong note. It was only Lea, who was correct. So talented and amazing!
How they found her is just amazing. It was meant to be. They searched for a longggg time to find someone to play Kim. They went to different countries. Thousands auditioned. Then they visited Philippines and Lea was in the last batch of girls they saw. It was as if faith and destiny waited for her to arrive. She was more than perfect for the role.
This never gets old. I can watch this over and over again. Not only do I love hearing her sing the high notes but the low notes as well from "we have been blessed you and I." Oh to be blessed with such a crystal clear angelic voice. Her tone is just the prettiest out there.
Crazy to think that in this audition she meets the incredible composer of Les Mis - and neither knows that in the future she would be both Eponine and Fantine, giving some of the most amazing renditions of On My Own and I Dreamed a Dream.
Lea's voice has this amazing quality about it that always makes it feel very real, very tender, and very emotional. She always sounds like she's singing from the heart, and like she's singing right to you. There are plenty of "great singers" whose voices are technically perfect but are boring and easy to tune out, but when I hear Lea's voice, I drop everything. It's a voice that could stop me on the street. It always makes me emotional. I love her.
2:00 is the real life equivalent to Christine’s “Think of Me” moment from Phantom of the Opera. You can see a star being born and she captures the music and takes over the whole song!
How was she possibly this amazing at such a young age? This is a score that is not intuitive and takes so much wisdom and personal growth. What an amazing performer.
Every year or so this song creeps into my head and I have to go down the TH-cam rabbit hole listening to all things Lea Salonga. Nothing compares to her early years. What a uniquely delicate yet powerful voice. I could listen forever.
I've been watching Lea TH-cam videos for years, but I've been playing them on repeat consistently throughout the pandemic. I just don't get tired of listening to her sing.
I would be paralyzed in awe if I sat next to Michel and Shonberg. You can see it in her eyes when she's looks at him singing like, "Omg, no focus.....omg.....crap, pay attention!'
good person, now you gained a tiny insight into my mind (disclaimer: being a better singer because she trained so much does not mean she is any better as a human being; I do not believe anyone is better than anyone, but I do recognize effort and hard work)
Salonga is 17 years old in this clip of the auditions held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. She was 18 by the time "Miss Saigon" had its world premiere on the West End in September 1989.
I know that Lea may be offended by me saying this, but I have always thought that this recording was the best rendition of this song that I have ever heard her perform. I don't think that any future performance (from anyone including Lea) ever captured the innocence and vulnerability. Sometimes the first take steels it. Such an incredible artist. I hope we can see her in the Bay Area one day.
I grew up listening to metal, gangsta rap, and classic rock. Now I am 43 and appreciate Broadway musicals which I have never been into until now. I started to sing Lea's Disney princess songs to my own daughter. I hope my half Filipina daughter will develop her own singing, and appreciation for all kinds of music to🤗
Had the pleasure of hearing her sing live recently. I've never heard such a pure and extraordinary voice. Her voice is as clear and perfect at 48 as it was at 17! Rare talent and wonderful lady.
How old was she in this...nailing that bottom note?!?!?! I've been a fan since the early 90's, and this video is just another example of how amazing she has _always_ been.
It was like a “eureka” for the team after her first try. You can see their smiles of excitement as if wanting to listen more of her runs...and the rest is history, indeed. She’s just shown them a glimpse of what she is and could become-a package known. Her enunciation is one that makes her distinct, captures audience, and makes us all believe in all her portrayals. What a talent. I could watch videos of her here in YT again and again, still in awe. Thank for uploading.
what's great with lea's singing is you can really feel and hear emotion in her voice, she's clearly interpreting the message in the song's lyrics through singing.
I've watched this several times -- and other Miss Saigon audition videos of Lea -- and will do so again and again. Ms. Lea, thank you. Ang galing mo. Grabe!
I have been following this thread for many years and I'm glad to see how it has progressed. Not only is it well preserved, but it should be archived for future auditions

But everybody was surprised that Lea started at a different note. It turned out that, everybody was wrong including the orchestra, who started at the wrong note. It was only Lea, who was correct. So talented and amazing!
WOWW! thanks for sharing. :) Love Lea, she's our country's treasure..so proud! can you send me a link to this article? Thank yooouuuu. ;)

YAHHHH
Hahahaha same🤣
Well hello there!
Filipinos oddly enough tend to be natural singers. I don't know how. Same with Pacific Islanders.
Jessi Tj 👍
Jessi Tj exactly man chills. Her performance in 25th gave me goosebumps. The consistency 🙌🏻
She even speaks beautifully. At the end you can see how excited the team is...
2020 anyone? Lea indeed has a voice of an angel ❤️

WHAT THATS CRAZY
2:26 that low note, wow. Piano player has an nice voice too.
+sean craig that's Claude Michel Schonberg on the piano to you!
Kindve a huge deal of a piano player
+sean craig That piano player composed Miss Saigon and Les Mis
Impressive low note for a soprano, and a very young one at that.
Lea was so young when she auditioned but her voice was already crystal clear back then. Such an amazingly talented human being.
I love her.
Oh my god her voice is literally perfection.
Kiwimations she's sounds just like she is now, beautiful 💖
The three gentlemen reactions say it all. Beautiful. Beautiful.
Lea Salonga didn't just raise the bar for singing Miss Saigon, she shattered it.
2:00 is the real life equivalent to Christine’s “Think of Me” moment from Phantom of the Opera. You can see a star being born and she captures the music and takes over the whole song!
Perfect comparison, gave me chills
I watch this clip every now and again because it fills my soul with happiness
How was she possibly this amazing at such a young age? This is a score that is not intuitive and takes so much wisdom and personal growth. What an amazing performer.
Damn... Her voice so pure. So magical and mythical voice! No wonder why most of her songs are Disney's.

Same here! This video is part of my lifetime favorite videos, videos I’ve been visiting every year for so so long
I would be paralyzed in awe if I sat next to Michel and Shonberg. You can see it in her eyes when she's looks at him singing like, "Omg, no focus.....omg.....crap, pay attention!'
OMG...This iz beyond my thinking
Sammy Joe;
I thought she thought "lol, this is easy; I sing so much better"
@@melc7516 da fuq 😂😂same though
good person, now you gained a tiny insight into my mind (disclaimer: being a better singer because she trained so much does not mean she is any better as a human being; I do not believe anyone is better than anyone, but I do recognize effort and hard work)
Beyond beautiful voice. She deserved to get that part.
totally. the timbre of her voice is beautiful.
I love their reaction at the end. They're probably thinking, "Damn. This is the one. The one we've been looking for."
Damn this is what we looking for to throw at garbage

Omg her voice is beautiful, it's so musical and the way she immediately corrects her mistakes!
I'm such a dork I could listen to this a million times. She sounds so beautiful and soothing.
Salonga is 17 years old in this clip of the auditions held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. She was 18 by the time "Miss Saigon" had its world premiere on the West End in September 1989.
This brought tears to my eyes. Gosh, she is outstanding. Such clarity in her voice.
Her voice is the epitome of PERFECTION
Agh even when she was young she was so good and she still is :)
She's been singing PROFESSIONALLY since she was 7... that's how good she is, still is.
That angelic voice.. Very pure.
The autograph request gets me every time. I wonder if it ever even occurred to her that she might be cast in Les Mis one day
I grew up listening to metal, gangsta rap, and classic rock. Now I am 43 and appreciate Broadway musicals which I have never been into until now. I started to sing Lea's Disney princess songs to my own daughter. I hope my half Filipina daughter will develop her own singing, and appreciation for all kinds of music to🤗
To all Lea Salonga fans, this is a true gem we all shall treasure. 💎💞
Had the pleasure of hearing her sing live recently. I've never heard such a pure and extraordinary voice. Her voice is as clear and perfect at 48 as it was at 17! Rare talent and wonderful lady.
The weird thing in this comment section is the heart reaction of uploader to the recent comments, the fact that this was uploaded 14 years ago
I like how everyone is so stoic but after they're all grins and giggles

Awwww the fact that she asked him to autograph the Les Miserables poster and then played in this musical in main roles is sooo amazing!
How old was she in this...nailing that bottom note?!?!?! I've been a fan since the early 90's, and this video is just another example of how amazing she has _always_ been.
She was only 17 years old.
@@johnp213 Every so often, when I start thinking, "I'm pretty good," somebody posts a TH-cam video that puts me in my place...like this one.
A LEGEND was indeed born that day... thank you God for these amazing people who touches lives to this day with their music,
TH-cam algorithms brought me here. And I'm loving it.
I'm not exactly a musical expert or enthusiast, but I'm so deeply moved by this video ❤ thank you for sharing
Her voice here is actually magical
Thumbsup if you are watching this september 2019
She is a legend!
This was way too old but i never get tired of listening to this song especially lea's voice. Her voice alone is revolutionary! 👏👏
She's one of million with an exceptional talent
what's great with lea's singing is you can really feel and hear emotion in her voice, she's clearly interpreting the message in the song's lyrics through singing.
Watching this August 16, 2019. So inlove with Lea ❤️
