Over a decade with the Spirit. Tried many others along the way, but always back to the Spirit. It isn’t perfect but it is the best compromise of all things imo
Per te. Per me leatherman tutta la vita
Best knife channel for real-life perspectives on ownership and usage.
The Spirit is my favorite because my dad found one on the ground where he works and gave it to me. Been carrying it for a few years now. Honestly it sucks for whoever originally lost it but hey I've taken good care of it.
😂 for real. That sucks for the looser. All celebration for the winner 🏆
Classic multi-tool addiction presents with proclivity towards friendship with a brick.
I’ve been using the Swiss tool for over 20 years now. It’s certainly the best multitool I’ve ever used. Very durable! I occasionally use it as a hammer and it is not harmed.
I used to have a job where I did lots of machine maintenance, and I carried my SwissTool X on my belt every day. It served me extremely well, way better than any of the handful of Gerber and Leatherman multitools I tried. My current job doesn't require me to have a multitool on me, and I kinda miss carrying it all the time (it's hard to justify having the bulk of it on my belt if I don't need it...even though it certainly does attract the ladies! lol).
My SwissTool differs from yours in that it has a curved serrated blade instead of the file. I am really torn about which tool would be better there! I could see a file being really useful, yet I kinda agree with your point that you should just grab a hand file. But if I'm out away from the house and my tools, having a file at the ready could be really good. However, that serrated blade is probably my most used tool on it. It's perfectly designed for strap cutting, zip ties, etc.
Honestly, my ideal SwissTool X would keep the serrated blade, but delete the regular blade and put a file there instead. I always have at least one pocket knife on me, so why would I need one on my multitool? I'd use a file a LOT more than that blade; hell, the blade pretty much never gets used at all. I think it would be cool if Victorinox and the other guys would consider offering this as an option, since so many of us now are total nerds about knives but we may want to also be nerds about multitools, and the knife on a multitool will be useless and redundant to us.
Very good points, Taylor! If V was still making the Swisstool Spirit XC, that might have been an alternative for you as it has a serrated blade & the file with a saw...you could then just carry a dedicated folder & you'd be all set...btw, your tool is the Swisstool RS(Rescue - Safety) aimed at rescue response personnel...hence the reason there is not a file...I believe they stopped making them in 2017....
I've NEVER used either blade on mine, if I'm ever in an emergency where I need to cut a seatbelt or something I'll have a factory -sharp blade for the job. I carry and use a pocket knife so there's no guarantee it'll be razor sharp in a life or death situation.
Rewatching this and spotting that beautiful moment with you and Cedric at 16:40, rest in peace Good Boy.
I think all 3 are great choices. I have a Spirit and it's perfect for my medium sized hands. More edc than heavy duty. Able to handle all small edc tasks while looking good.
My swisstool had 5 drivers and included a chisel and two wire strippers on the side. It's the one without scissors but included the serrated blade.
Swisstool X Plus (ratchet) 3.0339 L .it is it, the definitive Multitool.
In its leather sheath you also can add:
1 adjustable wrench 4"
2 adapter ¼hex ¼drive for sockets
3 sewing nails (medium-large) for repairs, pierce alcohol bottle, compass, windscreen wipers, lpg nozzles, splinters removal
4 a magnet to retrieve objects.
5 some spare cash in small changes
By side you can also carry:
1 ¼drive socket set 6 to 13mm
2 indexes with more ¼ drive standard bits implementation especially Torx and Allen but also anti-tamper.
A separated ratchet that fits in everywhere is the biggest advantage right out of the box because of course it will fit where a multitool mounting proprietary bits in a screwdriver manner not; and, moreover, because most of fixings are made by 2 components (a nut and a screw or bolt)in order to work proficiently you also need two devices, one retaining and the other fastening or undoing.
Great review. You've got an informative, interesting style in your presentation.
The Spirit MX Clip just joined my collection… wonderful upgrade from regular Spirit. And the tools pull out so much easier (apparently this may be a recent improvement).
I EDC a spirit several years now and it’s still my favorite. Got Leatherman’s and a Gerber but I like the quality and style of the spirit better. Especially the slime size and weight are a plus to me, having it at the belt every day together with a flash light.
The Swiss tool also has a fairly accurate set square function, which I’ve put into use in the past. I have two multi tools, the original leatherrman and the Swisstool the original Leathermam is still a lightweight and useful tool, probably not the most comfortable, the Swiss tool is a heavier more comfortable but no less useful tool. It’s a case of horses for courses.
A very nice, comprehensive review of these tools...most useful for old hands as well as those who want to find out which is best for them...thanks!😊
I enjoyed your video.
I have the swiss tool with no scissors. I prefer to have separate scissors with my rambler or compact swiss army knives
Enjoying your multicool kick. Thanks for bringing us along 👍🏻
Hahaha I’ve used the pliers on my Swiss champ for the same thing, helping the wifey get hers earrings in.
Those small pliers are a fantastic tool in thier own right.
I forgot how much I like that music!
Thanks Peter for another informative video. I have only used Leatherman multitools, but I have 6 Victorinox knives. Got to love their saws. 🔪🎸
A much needed video. Brilliant!
Thanks for the well-thought out comparison. I also own both, but both without the scissors (since I usually carry a VIC SAK with scissors in addition or a LM Style PS, and the scissors particularly on the Spirit are 2nd class). On a multitool, I like serrated blades quite a lot as a complement to the straight edge on my knife. I think the Spirit is a bit more advanced, since it's newer and they had some time to develop it further. Generally, I think a MT is something of smaller size, since if I know what I want/need, I take a dedicated tool with me, e.g. for pliers. (and there are no pliers on any MT in the world which can compete with Knipex pliers - which are competitively priced in Germany.
I lol’d at the beginning, nice job. Just putting this out there because couple beers, thankfully I haven’t gone down the rabbit hole of multi tools like I did knives, leatherman super tool was first one in 96 or so,yeaarrs later, rebar and wave plus. The other brands just couldn’t break the hold the super tool had on me I guess
I have the Spirit with one hand opening on the knife and aerated blade. It is a little upgrade on the basic Spirit. I like it a lot.
The Cybertool M is fantastic. I only wish they switched the pliers and Cybertool layers so the screwdriver can be centered.
I have a Swiss tool x. I use it alot. Very useful
Pretty darn good review, thank you
I have the swisstool x and have been for 3 years. The one thing I did want is a pocket clip, so I been looking at the spirit for a while too. I did pass up an opportunity to buy the Spirit clip, but I didn’t.
Love the reviews pete but really missing the cut testing!
does the Swiss Tool pinch the hands? I have the Spirit X with serrated blade.
I hooked my fair share of parcels with those hooks. So I’m not one to wonder. 😌
This is literally the video I needed this week! Whilst I appreciate your school based A and B+ ratings, where would the swisstool X and Spirit X fall on last month's leatherman Teir list??!?!?!
If the handle curve on the Spirit is more comfortable using the pliers, for everything else it would be a disadvantage. There is also a way to use the Swisstool with the handles at quare angle, which on top of the ruler, adds an actual external square angle, and holding one of the handles (upward or downward) together with the closed jaws in the hand for an awesome grip using some tools.
Original Swisstool for me, no question.
I’ve got a swisstool for my kit. Good quality, but after carrying it around for a while I find I need the pliers too often and the rest of the tools too little for it to be worth it. Probably going to swap it out when I find the right pliers.
Yeah I have a small pair of Knipex pliers that I carry in my EDC pocket organizer on days when I don't want that bulky multitool on my belt. They've saved my ass several times!
Thanks Pete! What are your thoughts on these vs. Leatherman’s lineup?
Leatherman should make a land surveyor centric option. I'm not exactly sure what would be best but I'm sure a couple gimmicky things would be neat.
I have what I think is the larger one but I never use it because it's so stiff. I can barely get the tools out. I always just grab my P4 or Surge or Rebar instead.
Cracking video Pete, I seen a victornox Swiss tool in my local cash/crime converters, might go grab that sucker this weekend
Did you?
Lol dude the sheer amount of ear-related things you get up to with your tools
Also, do they have Leatherman Multitools in Australia?
Since I got the cyber tool - the one you showed - I have not carried neither of my three Leathermans. Well I do have a squirt p4 in my pocket. But who's counting.
But, that spirit would be a nice addition. 🤔
I may also be a MAD. Multitool Addicted Dummy. 😅
5:56 my intrusive thoughts makes me consider cutting an aluminium bicycle frame with that saw/file 🙊😱😲🤷♂
I love my spirit tool mx. But i don't use it much. Because i don't want to ruin it. Such a nice looking multitool. But i always end up grabbing my Leatherman.
Victorinox best quality multitool!
Super excited to this video!!
So I'm sitting here in Alabama USA thinking about this and bam! Some guy in Australia is too!
If you went for the crazy scientist look is was spot on 😃 as for the multitools ... i have only the Spirit, and I'm kinda disappointed, one of the internal springs jumped off, the one wich keeps the tools inside the handle, and yes the scissors are really lame , I'm considering to switch to Wave+ 😊
I love the elegant Swiss Spirit, but the scissors are a disgrace and really knock it down from being what it deserves to be.
Hilarious as usual. Thanks for the uploads.
Did you get the Arc yet or do you plan to?
To your opening line, I do all three
Which multitool did the chooks prefer
Very good information👍👍👍
The spirit x is the better one I had great difficulty getting blades out of the Swiss tool , breaking nails getting blades out , I carried the spirit x for five years , great item in your pocket , I used a leather man wave but it's a bigger item to carry and not as good ,
I saw those prices and nearly keeled over. Both are MUCH cheaper in the US. I just bought both of mine for around $125 each.
What is the music of have playing? Sounds like fire emblem/ some random JRPG lol
Which one to get? Swisstoll X for 118 USD or Spirit XBS for 144 USD?
If you're getting other multitools, please consider the powerpint! I've heard it's really good
As someone who doesn't need to carry a full size multitool every day, the Powerpint is the sweet spot between being functional while very compact.
Shoutout Chrono Trigger 👏
I would choose spirit for its lightness, but i so dislike the )( shape of folded handles, and scissors are also not typical victorinox quality. So swisstool x it is.
They look pretty solid 🇦🇺 🇳🇿
Wonder what my old swisstool is, it has no scissors.
……Is that the music from chrono Trigger?
Oh great, now I'm browsing yet another multi tool...
Right, I've ordered one. I hope you're happy now @cedricada
Both are great tools, personally I prefer the original Swiss Tool.
G'day Pete, well the first step with any addiction is .... admitting you have a problem ; )
I will say an awl is a very worthy inclusion IMO, especially with an eye, since there aint many other things that can do the same job(s) and fair to say I reckon, most folks dont even have one in the toolbox or garage, ...... at awl ; ) Cheers Duke.
That...was "awlful"....😅
I think I'm also part of the weirdo multi tool buyers cult since I bought and even occasionally carry a Swisschamp XXL.
The Spirit is hard to beat…very hard 🥇🎃
I love my Swiss Tool dearly but the pouch is complete garbage. Victorinox are aware of this yet they have not issued a recall or offered warranty replacements. The UK Victorinox agent Burton McCall have got some of the worst customer service out there. I don't know why Vic still deal with them.
I got one of the first swisstools that came out, and the large phillips driver is absolutely useless, cams out of everything, very bad design, hope they changed it, the wire cutter is also soft steel and dints unlike the leatherman. The tools are soft steel which makes them great for prying, I broke the large driver on my leatherman wave, steel is too hard. Sometimes soft steel is good.
16:54 looks like my dog
The Spirit ended up being the winner for me, but the scissor choice has me baffled, they could fit the standard 91mm in there but instead put these stubby rubbish ones in…?
you must be a fan of Chrono Trigger, best snes video game ever made ahaha
Cracking music choice
The little splay in these two when they're closed just offends my visual sensibilities for some reason. I do like the Swisstool having the ruler, and I'm annoyed that Leatherman quit stamping those on.
Comment for engagement
Obviously not a diamond file you wouldn't be using that on wood😮
Accoutrement count: 2
I have yet to handle a Spirit, but the one main thing that always bugged me on my SwissTool X is how bloody uncomfortable it is in the hand compared to Leathermans
I have something similar to the Swisstol, with outside tools.
Comfort using the pliers are great, comfort using the knife for more than small tasks are terrible.
Dude that soundtrack! WTAF I can’t watch it all
Lol that screw rant...
first!
No you were sencond.
Aaannddd lost me with they have the same steel as pocket knife
