Asus Transformer Mini T102h Review

  • Asus Transformer Mini T102h Review
    I recently stumbled upon this little machine while looking for anything new in the low cost stylus enabled tablet space. The Asus Transformer Mini, the T102H or T102HA, is a small 10" Windows 10 tablet that sports an active digitizer. In a surprising break from the norm, Asus ditched the usual Wacom for Microsoft's N-Trig pen. It runs Windows 10 Home 64 bit, and has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The system is at a very aggressive price point, at under $400. Of course, at this price point there are trade-off's. First and most notable is the Processor and Screen. To achieve better battery life there is an Atom X5 processor, which isn't a powerhouse by any means, but is adequate for most productivity tasks. The screen is only 1280 x 800, which sounds like a let down, but the display is very clear and has excellent color quality. The added bonus for this machine is it comes with pretty decent keyboard/mouse cover; something that's extra on the Surface line.
    Take a look at the review and see if it's something that you could use.

    I've had this since December it is really good for the money. When I got it, it was $280. It's my computer.
    Screen is fine, it is sub 1080p but the focus of the device is to have a lot of features that more expensive devices have, colors are great on this. Don't let the resolution get you down
    Stylus works great, it includes it
    Keyboard is decent for what it is, I can personally easily type on it, this is also included, something a surface and ipad pro don't include even though they claim to want to be computers.
    As for games, there's many games that it CAN handle. Windows has MANY games for every spec computer. What I have installed from steam is game dev tycoon, brawlhalla, burnout paradise, American truck simulator and evoland 2. It's gonna be a much better experience than mobile gaming, you can get many full fledged games for cheap on steam that an atom x5 can run.
    It's not a speed demon but it runs. 4gb of ram is a lifesaver. It's definitely the minimum you want, even the surface laptop starts with 4gb ram. The atom x5 has a low clock speed but with a quad core processor that helps it.
    It has a fingerprint reader which works really well, it's so convenient to use it to sign in.
    Overall it's an excellent device for the money, I am typing on it right now. It can be had for $250 on the Microsoft store now. That could change though as I think it's just a sale.

    Hi, great video really complete! I want to buy a t102ha but I'm wondering how the keyboard is? It looks much more stiff than a surface keyboard but, do you think it is rigid enough to type on your lap or should I go with the t101ha which has almost the same specs, but a more laptop keyboard style?

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've always found these small computers to be hard to use on the lap, but the keyboard on the Asus should be good enough to allow you to type on your lap. It's a good keyboard, it's more stiff and tactile than the Surface Pro keyboards. The nice thing about the 102 is you can pull the keyboard off and you can have a pure tablet experience. The pen is the other selling point, if you want a decent pen for the tablet experience than it's hard to go wrong with the 102. If you won't need those options you might be ok with just a standard laptop.

      The moment when you realize that your pentium is berely more powerfull than this yet consumes 55W while this consumes little to nothing in comparison,and it's way more portable then the desktop computer,well,that's embarasing,and sad,ouch :/ Don't worry I'll get my hand on components for my next pc with the i5 kabylake and all of the goods and then a big asus laptop at 15' with an i5(i know,quite the I5 lovers over here XDD) and then maybe this as a replacement for my tablet.

  • @alexnir
    @alexnir 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pretty nice review. My question is that if someone wants (for example lost the stylus) can buy a surface pen as a replacement? Although as you said on the video is not fully supported for the pressure sensitivity, can a surface pen replace the day-to-day work of asus stylus?

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually Yes, it's the same pen... What I was trying to explain in the video is what's missing in the Asus is the ability to control the pressure sensitivity. On the Surface Pro there's a tool you can get called the "Surface Hub", or it might have been renamed to just "Surface". That tool lets you customize pen pressure and button assignments. That won't work on the Asus. So, you'll have pressure in what apps support it, just like the Asus pen. I'm not quite sure why OneNote wasn't cooperating when I made this video.

    You keep saying the screen isn't HD. It is HD. High-Definition resolution is defined as 1280x720. That screen being 1280x800 means it is HD.

      Thanks Rafael, I was debating about keeping it, since the price was really good. But I was hoping the device had a Wacom pen. I like these little pen computers, and I don't find N-Trig pens to be as good as a Wacom. I also have the Lenovo Yoga Book, which I actually like more, so when it came to it, I decided to return it.

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The question I always ask in reply is what do you plan to run on the device? The Surface Pro will be more powerful in regard to processing power. The screen will also be a little bigger and have a higher resolution. If you are simply going to use it for email, word processing and web browsing, than this might work fine. It's hard to beat the price, since you get the pen and keyboard with it. The Surface Pro is also better built than this computer. It's a fun little device, but doesn't feel as premium as the Surface Pro's magnesium body. The included pen isn't as nice as the Surface Pro pen, but that's easily replaced by buying a Surface pen. Just for clarification, I'm talking about the Surface Pro 3 or newer. The Surface Pro 1 and 2 used a different pen tech than the later Surface Pro's.

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If that's the case, I would look into something that would have more memory and disk space. Something like the Surface Pro would be good. But I wouldn't limit myself to the SP line. These days, there's plenty of options, unless there's something specific you like in the SP. HP's Spectre line is pretty good, as well as Lenovo's Yoga line.

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This machine is at a great price range, and should run Python fine... Of course, it depends on how heavy the computations your Python will do. The CPU isn't a full i5 or i7 processor you would find on a Surface Pro, but I think you should be fine.

    Hi Dower Chin, do you think the T102h performs worse than other Atom-based devices out there? I don't really know much about benchmarking tests but reading online reviews it seems that some devices with older Atom processors actually out-perform the T102h. Any thoughts appreciated, thanks.

    • @dowerchin

      From my limited time with the device I didn't think it performed any worse than other Atom based systems. Being an Atom based device, you'll just need to set your expectations for what you'll want to do with the device.

    Hi dower, I know it's quite late but i really would like this for my birthday, to do school have some fun with drawing and use it as a tablet which is great, but I'm really worried about the graphics say if I got this for my birthday and bought a graphics card out my own money would that work?

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, this type of tablet doesn't have the capability of expanding the graphics. It's geared as a low cost media consumption device with pen capability. The pen itself is ok, but not as good as others I've used. For graphics expansion though, are you thinking about something like a Razer Core to add a gaming grade graphics card? In order to extend the graphics with an external card, you're going to need to find a laptop with Thunderbolt 3. The Dell XPS 15 9650 and the Porsche Design Book One can use a Razer Core, but I've had no luck with the HP Spectre x360 (some people seem to have gotten this to work).
      The question you'll need to answer for yourself is what your budget is, and what you'll be ultimately wanting to do with it. Another device to think about is the Apple iPad Pro, the Apple Pencil is excellent, and is a decent option if you don't need specific Windows based applications.

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically, Windows is supposed to detect if the keyboard is detached and ask if you want to go into "Tablet Mode", but it doesn't seem to do that automatically on this device (at least not mine). So, without the keyboard attached and NOT in Tablet Mode. the keyboard won't automatically come up. You will need to go into Tablet Mode manually. You can do that easily by swiping from the right site to bring out the panel, in there, look for a button called "Tablet Mode" and enable it. Once in that mode, anything that needs input will automatically bring up the touch keyboard.

      To be honest, I didn't have it long enough for that to happen. I'd be surprised if it did fail so soon though. I've had other Asus products that have held up well. But then again, to keep costs down they might have sacrificed quality. I did order a new one this week, since I've been very surprised how popular this system seems to be.

      There is palm rejection, it's as good as the Surface Pro 3 and 4, which is decent. The trick with palm rejection is the device needs to see the pen pointer before your palm hits the screen. Once that's engaged it's usually fine.

    I'm interested in buying this as the sale price is good. Can you please confirm if the One note app has speech recording capabilities similar to the surface one note app. The lenovo Yoga 510 14" i3-6100u has been reduced to the same price as the T102, so in terms of Cpu, would the lenovo be a better bargain? Spec wise, the lenovo comes with 8Gb and 128ssd. I'm looking for a compact affordable, portable notebook for on the move computing. Thanks

    • @mxmus08

      I forgot to add that i3 is 6th generstion, clocked at 2.3ghz with a 1080p screen.

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      OneNote is just OneNote, so it should have the same features. You could also just install the full Office365 version too. The T102 is a decent system, but the CPU is a little weak. It's a great bargain if you consider what you get, it would be closest to the regular Surface tablet. The biggest question you will need to ask yourself is what you intend to do with it. For a portable media consumption, note taker, it might not be bad. I didn't like the pen that much though; the tip felt harder than it needed to be. The good news is the Surface Pro 4 pen's will work on it. The con is there is no customization you get with the optional Surface Hub app. The Yoga series is nice, the i3 would get you more CPU and more memory should allow you to run more apps at the same time. As for storage, you could always add a MicroSD card to the T102 to get you more storage, it'll just be added as a D-Drive.

      Thank you for the response and feedback. My main uses fir this device would be emailing, Ms word, web browsing and some video consumption, so I don't need anything that's overly speced out as this is not a primary device. The specs of the lenovo and price point are very tempting, but not been able to remove the tablet from the keyboard, the slightly bulkier form factor and the spygate issue that plagued the company last year are swaying me more towards the Asus. I haven't played with the Lenovo yet, so I'll give it a whirl before making my final decision. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not quite sure. I'm not much of a DOTA player, but looking at the requirements for the game, it seems pretty accommodating. I did a google search for DOTA 2 requirements, and there's quite a few places that offer advice to hardware. Having said that, it looks like anything with a modest graphics card will run the game. The question comes down to budget, but it seems like going with an older system, packing a dedicated GPU like an NVidia 700 series GPU should achieve what you want.

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I prefer the 12" size these days, mainly because my vision is getting poor. Besides the screen size, you'll need to think about the keyboard size, since 10" tablets and laptops will need smaller keys to squeeze into that space. Of course, the larger size will demand a larger price, so you'll need to factor those in. This machine is a decent computer, and it's hard to beat the price for what comes with it.

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once the keyboard is detached, the keyboard won't work, since it isn't powered and it's not a bluetooth keyboard. It's similar to a Surface Pro keyboard. The computer itself can go into tablet mode (if you want it to), and you can then just use the touch screen or the pen.

    I've been looking for a good 2 in 1 laptop, preferably something that is a tablet and laptop and maybe with extra perks, for school that is not a chromebook under $400 do you have any recommendations for me I really need a new laptop!!

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Asus is a decent system for the price. Another option might be a refurbished Surface Pro 2 or 3. What extra perks are you looking for though, since a 2 in 1 under $400 will be rather limited in regard to memory and storage.

    • @stephaniejolynn7463
      @stephaniejolynn7463 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dower Chin I'm looking for something if I can something with a stylus pen so I can write or draw, I'm not really for much just something for school and will last for a couple years

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Computers these days probably won't last more than 3 years, unless you really aren't picky about what they do. Drawing and Writing will also vary too. The Asus pen support is ok, but it's an earlier gen N-Trig pen, so it's about as good as the Surface Pro 3. It won't be as good as the new N-Trig found on newer tablet computers like the new Surface Pro, or the HP Spectre X360. Surprisingly, the Apple Pencil is an excellent stylus, if you wanted to look in the Apple direction. I think if you wanted something to last a little longer, you might look for something that has a bit more horse power (real i5-i7) and memory (8gb to 16gb). Of course, that all costs more. A good option might be to look for a refurbished Surface Pro 3 from the Microsoft Store.

    • @stephaniejolynn7463
      @stephaniejolynn7463 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dower Chin do you think there are some hybrid convertible 2 in 1laptops with backlit keyboard because im sometimes going to work in dimly lit places maybe with a few extra perks, I'm also trying to stay away from refurbished products just because of personal reasons

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think one of the better options out there now is the HP Spectre X360. If there is a Best Buy store near you, I recommend going over and touching a few of the 2-in-1's. If the pen is not important, the Lenovo 910 is also a nice machine. I'm staying away from Dell now, since I'm questioning their quality and support with a recent string of issues I've experienced. I know we're now moving into a much higher price point, but you'll get more for your money, and these more expensive systems might serve you longer.

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really like the Windows version of the Yogabook, it's a very unique tablet, but it's also less practical than the Asus. The Asus is a much more practical device (it's a little cheaper than the Yogabook). Specs are similar, but the Asus has a full size USB-3 port and has a finger print reader. Both have digitizer pens, the Yogabook is a Wacom and only works on the Halo Keyboard size, whereas the Asus is an N-Trig (like the Surface Pro). The Asus is also a little cheaper than the Yogabook.

      Probably not well. Solidworks recommends 8gb of memory and a decent graphics card, neither of these are present on this system. The processor isn't very powerful either. Solidworks might install though, since this unit runs Windows 10 64bit, but without more memory, GPU, and more powerful processor, it might not run very well. The resolution of the display is also only 1280x800, so I don't know how well Solidworks would run in this resolution.

    • @dowerchin

      It's the same type of pen so the same functionality is there. I didn't care for the tip on the pen that comes with the Asus, the tip is just a little too stiff and hard. The only thing you can't do is tweak the pressure sensitivity. If you get this, I would still recommend getting a Surface Pro 4 pen, since you can at least change the tip, and it has an eraser end.

    and does it also have a webcam at all I didn't know if you said that or not thank you and have a nice holiday

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, I'm not familiar what's needed for Drone work. It does have a MicroSD card, and a fill sized USB3 port. Those are nice options to have. The CPU may be weak for video work, especially if you plan on doing any type of editing and re-compression work. If you need more video work you might need to spend some more money and go to a Surface Pro 4 or something like a Lenovo Yoga 910. The T102 does have a front facing camera, just not a rear facing one.

    Excuse me, Capt'n Obvious. But why would you compare this to an I7 bench mark? That's like comparing the buying power of a 5 dollar bill to that of a 100 dollar bill isn't it? I mean it is plainly obvious these processors won't keep up with a full on I7 but to do that kind of analysis is disingenuous. With the Pen, the thickness of the line is like other pens and that is determined by the pressure you place on what you are drawing. This Pen technology is no different.

    • @dowerchin
      @dowerchin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll confess I'm not the best when it comes to benchmarking. I essentially used whatever was the top of the current list and showed where this device lands, which, in hindsight may not be a good measure, nor is it really a fair comparison. In regard to the pen, I didn't care for the feel of the pen, the tip was harder than what I've used on the Surface Pro. It worked, but lacked the quality feel of the Surface Pro pens.
