Great start to your new channel Ken!! Love the camera work and wow, what spectacular scenery. Looking forward to your future adventures! Good luck in your shoulder recovery ❤️🩹
Looks like you had a fun adventure. The second half of the paddle is some of my favorite conditions. There is something magical about paddling through those conditions and being rewarding with flat water, beautiful shoreline, and an awesome campsite, The downside to the calmer launch site in the form of a jammed skeg. Would have be worth it to launch in your original spot. Also a good reason we drag the bow in the sand. The corrective strokes to correct the weathercocking - something I do and teach when paddling cross wind is to point the bow a bit more downwind - essentially aiming off course. The wind will then weathercock you back on course. Rather than corrective strokes to get on course, you let the wind correct your course. I find it easier to use strokes to push me downwind than to correct course personally. If nothing else, it's another option for a stuck skeg.
I've only done open sea once.. on lake huron using a paddleboard. Absolutely terrifying and it was a calm day. Knowing that a complete abyss is below you and the only thing that separates you from it is your boat is certainly something. This trip is definitely on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing your adventures Ken! :)
Watching from over in the UK - great content. Production values are awesome and you are so easy and engaging to watch. As someone just starting their paddling journey your channels are my go to.
Your videos are what got me into Kayaking this past summer and I am so happy I decided to buy a kayak. I have literally fallen in love with it. Thank you so much for all of these amazing and inspirational videos and for opening up a passion for me. As much as I love winter I am really looking forward to spring to get back out there!! I always enjoy watching your videos on your other channel. Was glad to find this new channel.
So happy to hear you're enjoying kayaking so much! Glad I could help! I understand what you mean about looking forward to spring... I love winter as well, and I don't want to wish any time away, but I sure am looking forward to spring! :)
Those swells looked exhilarating! Can't wait to paddle Superior, once I've got all the right gear. Primus makes the perfect can stove for frying, uses a lot of gas to boil in the wind though. I think I'll make a wind screen for it.
Hi Ken, this is Joe Stayman. I’ve been going to Lake Superior Provincial Park for over 25 years. My kids grew up there one week of summer. I purchased a 9 foot kayak 20 years ago and started kayaking protected areas along the shoreline. I eventually advanced to a 17 foot Chinook Perception Sea Kayak. Sine educating myself I have led trips from Old Woman Bay to Gargantua twice, Old Woman Bay to Brûlé Harbor, Gargantua to Catherine Cove and many smaller trips. Lake Superior Provincial Park is truly a jewel! I just finished traveling around Lake superior by camper with sea kayaks of course! It reaffirmed that there is no more beautiful place on Lake Superior!
Awesome paddle. Paddling Superior or Lake Huron is a lot different than the ocean. The waves are much shorter and less rhythmic, do to the quickly changing wind conditions. Then there are the rebound waves coming at you bouncing off the rugged shore. Can feel like paddling inside a cement mixer at times. Waves hitting you from every direction. Fun but tiring experience.
Ken! Thank you so much for bringing all of us with you! I have been to Lake Superior and camped in a few different campsites near it. The water roars at night and yes it behaves just like an ocean. I'm impressed with your cool, calm, and collectiveness despite the challenges. Wow! Great job, Ken!!!!!
I'm just glad that I was not not on lake superior on my 2nd or 3rd time out and I grew up in Duluth mn and I have been swimming in the lake and I experienced how fast the weather and the lake can go from calm and warm to 4 ft waves in a few minutes
Nice video! It's nice to see that section of the Lake. That is a section that I havent paddled yet, maybe next summer. I seem to be paddling around the Lake in 1.5-2 week chunks (then I don't have to deal with the logistics of resupply).
This was great! I don't really watch much besides kayak and canoe adventure stuff on TH-cam. Well shot and well edited content is kind of rare, so pretty happy to find this gem.
Awesome video! I love seeing other parts of the lake I haven’t been to yet. I live in Minnesota and visit the Minnesota side of Lake Superior every year. Was just there a month ago hiking. Similar scenery to the eastern side. I haven’t kayaked the lake yet but definitely will someday!
This is great to see! I love this kind of content and especially your “Paddle Tales” featurettes on your other channel. Good luck Ken and a swift recovery to you. I’m suffering a similar injury and so I literally feel your pain and frustration. Content like this keeps me going. Thank you!!
Well here goes with my unbiased review. Who am I kidding I am biased,Ken I have to go with the fellow Canadian. I wish you great success with the new channel. Look forward continuing to watch your adventures. Great work Ken hope you are healing well.
Well done Ken. Nice for us old timers but will be very valuable to newer kayakers. It will answer many of their questions before they think to ask them.
we are both in our late 60's hence doing it in sections rather than straight thru like most do. It was another great trip; we're already planning the next section lol. take care of those shoulders, Peter
I have hiked that section of the Coastal trail. Beautiful but quite challenging. The shoreline is very similar to the North Shore of Lake Huron from Thesselon south to Spanish. Breathtaking shoreline with real Group of Seven scenery. Thanks for the videos Ken.
Hi Ken, seems like a long way to find a perfect campground. At least you live in a beautiful country better than here in US. I don't think anyone can goes that far like you do. Unless they must have so many experiences like you.
Haven't watched yet but I certainly will. Just came over from your video on your other channel to subscribe to this one. Commenting for the algorithm. Best of luck on the new channel Ken!
Great video and great start to your new channel Ken. Wondeful Superior coastline. Cool to see how you calmly and safely approached and tackled this challenging area. A great example for others. Looking forward to Part 2 of this adventure when its released ! I bet the Pukaskwa Park shoreline is probs on you bucket list too. 🙂 Stay safe !
Thanks James! You're absolutely right about Pukaskwa... I was using this trip partly as a 'test' to learn the nuances of Lake Superior before tackling Pukaskwa in 2025. Can't wait!! Now I'm just hoping the shoulder is ready for it next summer...
Ken! I'm hooked on Lake Superior! Isle Royale is on my list and you may have just added another line item to it! Haha. Great start to the video, and the channel. I love your enthusiasm here. Can hardly wait for more. [Except, it does take me a couple days to get through these longer videos. Under 7 minutes is key ;-) ]. (Again, YT is wrong!)
I think many people do the same thing, and watch these long videos in chunks. I really like creating these long form videos, because it lets me tell the story that I want to tell, and not feel like I have to rush. Glad you're enjoying it... over time! :)
You are one brave dude going out on these trips alone. I know you have the experience, and it is good to hear your commentary on when your comfort zone gets pushed! What incredibly gorgeous country!!!! Thanks for sharing with everyone!
Scorpio with Corelight is a good choice for Lake Superior and P&H make great boats. I have a first gen Scorpio and my one complaint is the skeg but they’ve moved the control and improved it in subsequent iterations. Holds a ton of gear, fun to paddle and responsive. Nice content, my home waters are further west of LSPP and the coastline is a bit more rugged, plastic boats are well suited to the rocky landings and launches
@ I don’t think there is anywhere on Superior that isn’t amazing. Have a look at Lake Nipigon some day. So much potentially but such a treacherous lake at times. Hope you get your shoulder back into working order and healed up fast.
Heck Yeah! :) I actually did this route this year to learn the nuances of kayaking on Lake Superior, with the plan of doing Pukaskwa in 2025. The only question now is whether or not my shoulder will be ready for that mission. If not 2025, then definitely 2026! I'm guessing that you've done Pukaskwa?
@@KenWhitingAdventures yes I have. It's a stunningly beautiful isolated place. And much colder than LSPP so plan for cold water in the north sections. I'd love to see your videography skills show off how gorgeous that place is. However, I think National Parks don't allow drones. Perhaps you could ask for special permission.
Wow that was definitely some serious paddling. But I’m sure it was well worth it for all that gorgeous scenery. Superior is definitely one of a kind.❤️Thanks so much
Hello from Summerville Oregon USA. Love your content Ken and purchased an Aquaglide inflatable based on your gear review from Paddle TV. Thanks for sharing your adventure through this remarkable region.
😮 Dawn and I really enjoyed this video! Easy to understand why this adventure was the last straw for your shoulder issues. I also injured my shoulder playing competitive volleyball over twenty years ago, and it resulted in a frozen shoulder. I was visiting my children yesterday, and subscribed them to your new channel while I was there. Got each of the grandchildren kayaks for Christmas this year, so want to get them ready to go! Blessings
@@KenWhitingAdventures got it! The 8 year old found out what she's getting, but has promised not to tell her cousins. I got them all Perception Prodigy XSs, because the family has a place on flat water and they are 8, 7, and 5, but I have a feeling real whitewater kayaks are just a few years down the road.
Hi Ken, great video! Your adventure reminds me of my own summers spent camping and exploring many, many lakes in the BWCA. I hope to get out next year and have adventures like the ones you’re sharing. Thanks again.
Lake Superior has captured my heart. The coastal views are spectacular! Not a kayaker or canker so definitely enjoying this experience through your eyes and videotography. Thank you!
Awesome! I was on. Lake Ontario...and ended up saying ehhh not today...and it was calm Lol....great to see how a great co fident paddler handles those swells...only the best should be out there...loved watching....from land haha
Absolutely love the Lake Superior Provincial Park Coast. Haven't paddled it, (yet) but hiked many sections of it a few years back. Watching this is bringing back many great memories thanks Ken! Absolutely gorgeous area!!
This really was an epic trip. The Canada side of lake Superior is absolutely beautiful. I can't wait to get that new aquabound paddle. I got the orange whiskey that you have used in a lot of your videos and it is fantastic. Can't wait for the next video.
It is a beautiful part of the world. I can't wait to check out the Apostles on the American side of the lake... but first... I've got Pukaskwa in my sights for next summer - as long as my shoulder is ready for it.
How beautiful! I subscribed to both channels. I'm hoping to kayak Lake Superior next year. I did some backpacking along the trail - fell in love with the lake. I'm looking forward to more adventures! Gotta say, though, I can't bring myself to pay $16.00 for a meal when I can buy Alessi soups and/or risotto for less than $5.00 and get 3-4 meals out of every pack. I'm sure Pinnacle is great, and the price point is in line with most backpacking meals.... but that price is painful for me anyway.... Safe travels!
Thank you! Stay tuned for Part 2 of the trip - I'll be releasing it this weekend. I hear what you're saying about the cost of dehydrated meals. I've been getting canned tuna salad for my lunches. They only cost around $3, and they're full of energy and good stuff. :)
What a beautiful and incredible adventure. I live in Minnesota USA and occasionally go to our parks along Lake Superior. Someday, I want to take a longer trip and see it from Canada. I don’t kayak, but there’s plenty to enjoy from the shore, too.
Excited for part 2! My son and I are starting to plan a Superior adventure for next season. You gave me a great idea for doing a trip exploring the Gargantua Islands which apparently is also called the Devil’s Warehouse!!!! We don't have the skills you have, so a more sheltered trip would be better for us. We have battled some pretty big water in Georgian Bay, but nothing like what Superior can dish up! You're a wealth of knowledge Ken. we have learned so much from you already. Good luck with the shoulder 😀
I live at the baltic sea and most time it is quite calm like a lake, but never underestimate when the weather change quickly and is going rough. Nice adventure, always nice cutted, love it.
Fantastic start to another adventure Ken. Have to say that's one bloody big lake really, does look like you're on the ocean. I completely agree with you at how strange it is, you're sitting in a kayak for hours and hours, but when you finally take a break Even sitting on a hard rock feels like luxury 😂 Looking forward to part 2. By the way that pizza looked bloody good. 👍
I liked your old set up but like this way just as much. Looking for to the rest of this adventure! I'll go to PaddleTV for this trips gear review. I'm a gear nerd. LOL
Weather conditions a bit beyond my comfort zone but man, what a trip it is! 🤩 Nothing like that to see in England! Maybe in Scotland around Hebrides but I can't go there yet - got too little experience. Thank you Ken and I look forward to part 2. 👍
@@KenWhitingAdventures, consider Poland as well. I know there are 2 videos from Poland on PaddleTV already but there's so much more to see. Who knows, maybe we'll meet on the water one day. 😉
What a beautiful adventure! Thank you so much for sharing. I wish I could paddle that without the rough water..lol.. We plan to kayak and camp next summer too at a local lake. We've only been kayaking maybe 3 months but already hooked! Thanks for your videos. We really enjoy them!
The great thing about summer on Lake Superior is that you get a LOT of calm days. Definitely worth the trip, although I would highly recommend going with Naturally Superior Adventures, as they know exactly where to go based on the weather.
Thanks for watching. To let you know, you'll also see some canoeing adventures on this channel. I LOVE a good canoe trip. FYI: This is my new channel. My other channel @paddletv is dedicated to paddling instruction and gear reviews, and so you might find some helpful information there as you start your kayaking journey. Cheers!
You're right, but it's not realistic to do that in rough water for over an hour. In this situation, I was edging the kayak with my sweeps to make the corrective strokes more effective.
@KenWhitingAdventures Lol- well, as I watched this I actually thought, "Ken could definitely help me up my game in the whitewater/big waves department!!"" 😅🛶💪
bloody nice . man what an amazing place to paddle . nothing like wind and waves to put you on edge when so exposed . definitely not my favorite paddling conditions smooth as glass is what i like :) at least you didn't have a headwind as well . Subbed ofcourse . Great content . thanks
Thank you! Just watched day 1 of your 4-day adventure on the Myall. Nicely done! Subbed right back :) Glad I never thought of saying "Good Pythons" on my trip!
Fantastic video Ken! I did this same solo trip a few years ago; thanks for helping to rekindle those memories. Been a long time fan and looking forward to more!
@@KenWhitingAdventures Not yet, but it’s on the short list. As is the Slates. I have been to the LS National Marine Conservation Area on the north shore, and highly recommend it.
Well done. I enjoyed watching. These adventures are in places that I will probably never see, so I like the perspective and seeing these sights. New channel for you, and I've subscribed. Cheers
What an epic start to your new channel. I have the exact same Kayak you used on order and seeing your video has just made me more impatient for it to arrive. They are not currently widely available here in the UK in Scarlet Red. As it will be replacing the Orange from the current line up. Will be heading of to watch the second part of your adventure. In the morning as it is nearly 1 am here. Well worth staying up late to catch your video.
Fantastic adventure! Thanks Ken! See if you can get hold of the Jet Boil pot support… I think it comes with the ‘minimo’ stove, and maybe try the summit skillet. I’ve never used Jetboil… happy with a trangia stove set for all my back packing and kayaking expeditions.
hey ken, I watched your paddle tv video about the new channel, on the last night of our 5 day paddling trip along the Murray River in Australia, my mate and I are paddling it in sections 5 to 10 days at a time. needless to say I subscribed as soon as I was able to get Wi-Fi, I was watching the paddle tv video on limited mobile coverage. We were tent bound due to inclement weather, first rain in two weeks so. so it helped pass the night, cheers Peter
That's awesome! I never got to paddle the Murray River when I was in Australia. I spent a year raft guiding on the Tully River (late '90s), and got to paddle a few other rivers while I was there, like the North Johnstone and Nymboida... but never got to do the Murray. I'm jealous! Hope it's been an amazing trip for you!

The downside to the calmer launch site in the form of a jammed skeg.
Yup. A great campsite feels heavenly after a big day on the water! :)

Lake Superior has captured my heart. The coastal views are spectacular! Not a kayaker or canker so definitely enjoying this experience through your eyes and videotography. Thank you!
Not a kayaker or cancer.... yet! :). Thanks for watching.
Awesome! I was on. Lake Ontario...and ended up saying ehhh not today...and it was calm Lol....great to see how a great co fident paddler handles those swells...only the best should be out there...loved watching....from land haha
:) Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely love the Lake Superior Provincial Park Coast. Haven't paddled it, (yet) but hiked many sections of it a few years back. Watching this is bringing back many great memories thanks Ken! Absolutely gorgeous area!!
Cheers!
There is a adapter to allow the use of other pans or pots from Jetboil
ReiRichard
Ha! Yes, I bought it as soon as I got home. :)
Yes, please! More adventure videos like this. They were always my favourite part of PaddleTV. Subscribed immediately
Great! Thanks!
Woohoo! More adventures with Ken!! Paddle on!!!
Ha! More coming... in fact, Part 2 of this adventure is about to go live this morning! :)
Thanks for the videos I always love what you put out
I appreciate it!
What a beautiful and incredible adventure. I live in Minnesota USA and occasionally go to our parks along Lake Superior. Someday, I want to take a longer trip and see it from Canada. I don’t kayak, but there’s plenty to enjoy from the shore, too.
Yes there is! The coastal trail looks fantastic, and there are a number of other really nice day hikes in the Park.
Thank you! I'm excited for your upcoming trip. You're going to LOVE IT! Exploring the Gargantua area would be an amazing trip on its own.
I like to cook good food on trips. Especially fish. It makes the trip just more enjoyable. The jet boil is not for cooking.
I can appreciate that! I love good food on trips... especially when someone else cooks it! :)
Lets Go!!!!
:). Heck yeah!
Awesome video, funny thing, that big smile when I paddle in a new place… yeah that’s me too!
:)
Happy to Sub! Great stuff as always. I'm excited for this channel.
Thank you!
I enjoy all three types of videos produced. Here to support the new channel! Your awesome Ken! Thank you for the entertainment
Thank you!!
I live at the baltic sea and most time it is quite calm like a lake, but never underestimate when the weather change quickly and is going rough. Nice adventure, always nice cutted, love it.
Thanks! So true about weather changes.
Great adventure! Superior is beautiful as always 🫶 thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
👍
Thanks George! PS. The pizza was amazing! Ha!
I liked your old set up but like this way just as much. Looking for to the rest of this adventure! I'll go to PaddleTV for this trips gear review. I'm a gear nerd. LOL
Ha! We all have a little gear nerd in us. :). Part 2 releases this coming Saturday, as I'm still editing it right now. Stay tuned...
Wow, that crystal clear water! Awesome 1st video for the new channel and looking forward to Part 2!
Yeah, the water is amazing! Really feels like the Caribbean at times... until you touch it and realize how cool it is. :)
Weather conditions a bit beyond my comfort zone but man, what a trip it is! 🤩 Nothing like that to see in England! Maybe in Scotland around Hebrides but I can't go there yet - got too little experience.
Thank you Ken and I look forward to part 2. 👍
One of these days I'll visit England and Scotland... So many places to see... :)
@@KenWhitingAdventures, consider Poland as well. I know there are 2 videos from Poland on PaddleTV already but there's so much more to see.
Who knows, maybe we'll meet on the water one day. 😉
Love watching your adventures when I can't get out on my own ones. Thanks Ken!
Cheers!
New to the channel but liking it, canoer mainly but experimenting with kayaks.
Cheers!
Maybe this is finally an answer to the rudder vs skeg question? I didn’t know they were so easy to jam with sand.
Ha! It is a downside of the skeg... but I've been hit in the head by rudders while transporting boats too many times to love rudders! :)
That is some beautiful water and shoreline, would love to paddle up there.
When you don't have a skeg, or God forbid, a rudder, you just set an edge and keep the kayak constantly turning away from the wind.
You're right, but it's not realistic to do that in rough water for over an hour. In this situation, I was edging the kayak with my sweeps to make the corrective strokes more effective.
This is awesome!! I'm really looking forward to the rest of this adventure and your future adventures on this channel!! Good luck, Ken!!
Thanks Dan man! Now that you're the whitewater man, we'll have to hit a river with a bit more rough stuff in the near future! :)
@KenWhitingAdventures Lol- well, as I watched this I actually thought, "Ken could definitely help me up my game in the whitewater/big waves department!!"" 😅🛶💪
Amazing trip. I like the formate of this video, so keep them coming.
Cheers!
bloody nice . man what an amazing place to paddle . nothing like wind and waves to put you on edge when so exposed . definitely not my favorite paddling conditions smooth as glass is what i like :) at least you didn't have a headwind as well .
Thanks! This trip got me excited for the next Lake Superior adventure - Pukaskwa! :). Have you been there?
@@KenWhitingAdventures Not yet, but it’s on the short list. As is the Slates. I have been to the LS National Marine Conservation Area on the north shore, and highly recommend it.
In a strange way, they make Jet boil clones that are quite a bit less expensive and .more functional, that will hold a pan like you showed.
As soon as I got home, I bought the adaptor which lets you use the Jet Boil with other pots. Just didn't even think about it before the trip! :)
Well done. I enjoyed watching. These adventures are in places that I will probably never see, so I like the perspective and seeing these sights. New channel for you, and I've subscribed. Cheers
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great start ken...im watching
Cheers Jay!
Looks like a lot of fun.
It's hard to beat! :)
Nice! Good boat choice :) FYI: Next video will come out this coming Saturday... I'm still editing it.
@@KenWhitingAdventures ah something to look forward too. Can’t wait.
Thanks. And yes, I ordered the pot support as soon as I got home. :) Lesson learned...
Suscribed! This was definitely white knuckle, stomach churning paddling but you made it, skegless. Amazing!!
Thanks! Stay tuned for the next video... the conditions get more intense! Right at the edge of my comfort zone. :)
Awesome video Ken. Really like watching it.
Thanks! I enjoyed filming it :)
hey ken, I watched your paddle tv video about the new channel, on the last night of our 5 day paddling trip along the Murray River in Australia, my mate and I are paddling it in sections 5 to 10 days at a time. needless to say I subscribed as soon as I was able to get Wi-Fi, I was watching the paddle tv video on limited mobile coverage.
Superior water is some of the most beautiful in the world.
Couldn't agree more.
