- Although Windows 7 support ended in January 2020, I still use the operating system as my daily driver for my personal machine every day. Why am I using this 11-year old operating system despite understanding the security risks behind it?
Watch to find out why I still use the operating system, what my possible alternatives are, and how I go into greater detail describing why Windows 10 is just not a good option for me. Later, I also talk about understanding the security risks of Windows 7 and why I do not find it as that big of a deal and my future for upgrading.

I think people are mad at me because of linux lol. Sorry to those guys! I guess I'll give a small explanation. As of right now, most of the programs I use are not natively supported via Linux. YES, I know there's wine, but ultimately I'll have to do a bunch of workarounds to get linux to run my programs correctly (Office 365, Vegas Pro, Paint.net, etc.). I could rely on the workarounds, but I'm not guaranteed it will be stable or smooth. I could also go for some alternative programs, but really this hassle is not worth a switch to linux in my opinion. People have different preferences and I respect those who use Linux, it's just not something for me ;) Hopefully this clears some stuff up.

Windows 10/11 is a dumpster fire of an OS. They're trying to be Linux, Android and Apple all at the same time. The interface wants to be a one size fits all for all at the sacrifice of the user experience for all devices. Appearance over functionality. If we wanted to get a Mac we would just get a Mac. Microsoft is becoming hot garbage. Not to mention the millions of Windows 7 computers still running internationally.

@@ghostHackd The scaling for desktop users is a nightmare. The fonts and the buttons are very illegible. Windows 7 was built for desktops and you can feel it. The scaling is perfect and intuitive for a desktop workflow. Win10/11 is trying to bridge the gap between the two mobile and desktop but fails miserably, not intuitive at all. Win 10/11 literally are using Android and Linux frameworks because they want to compete so bad, pre-installing candy crush. TF out of here, if I wanted to be basic I would get an iPhone and go to starbucks every morning.

What I miss more than Win7 UI? The actual feeling of excitement when a new Windows version was released. Grew up with Win95 and Win98SE... Upgrade to WinXP was a signifcant leap forward in UI design. Felt like a jumping into future back then. Then upgraded to Win7, it was a significant leap forward too. Subsequent Windows releases felt going sideways if not backwards.

The thing I miss most about Windows 7 is the Classic theme. I love the Legacy look and interface.

I want to downgrade to Windows 7 but Im scared for anything to corrupt or be unusable
here are 2 tips:
backup your stuff on an external hard drive, check if your pc has drivers for win7

The thing I miss in the newer windows versions are that we can't select older themes, like windows 7 have a kinda windows 98 theme and some other customization things. If windows 10 had some kinda windows 7 theme and start menu I would absolutely use it
6:59 Windows 7 start menu is the best Start Menu ever made. I've used a lot of Start Menus, menus in Linux, all the different versions in Windows, and ClassicShell menu which is an app that replaces the start menu in Windows. And hands down the one in Windows 7 is the best.
I can´t leave windows 7 because of the aero interface, it really is the best thing on the whole OS.

I hate Windows 10 because if I put my computer to sleep when I wake up it will BSOD, when I try to use UWP programs it BSODS, most of my programs don't work, the ui is sad, and it just BSODS randomly. Not to mention, it took 2 weeks to get win 10 to even function on my pc (I use a 9 year old iMac), when Windows 7 would install and work perfectly without having to use bootcamp. Windows 10 for me is just, broken, buggy and altogether horrible. It also broke my install of macOS and it won't let me reinstall it :(

As someone who uses Windows XP on one of their main laptops, I agree. You do you. You can use whatever OS you want as long as you like it and you’ve made it secure. Keep on Windows 7-ing.

@@Jackstmc lol I'm the kind of person that, if given the highest end hardware, would atleast set up a dual boot, one of the OS's being windows 7. For real tho, I grew up with Vista, and I grew up to know how it worked. So be glad I'm not saying vista lol. That stuff was a tad experimental (buggy). But it led to something amazing, windows 7 yey.
ngl tho vista would be harder cuz fewer programs support it and its older idk etc.
my ivy bridge pc supports it but since 8.1 has better kernel and stuff, i am using 8.1 as expected

Yeah, I'm still on 7, and it works really well even in 2023. I don't really see a point in installing a worse OS, and people are making forks of the big browsers that will keep running on 7 as long as the community supports it.

Same. My laptop use W7 and now that I have W10, it reached its max update and now, it suffers from corrupted profile. I refuse to make another account because 1) that's not how you fix a corrupted profile and 2), we have made another account because the start buttons didn't work and we are forced to log out.
My dad is worried that I use my laptop and that it is slow. My laptop will work fine with W7. Why are they injected with these fake wisdom?

After Windows 7 every subsequent version feels like a soulless mess of bloatware with awkward UI and unneeded telemetry. Rocking W7 Ultimate on a Ryzen machine built in mid 2021.
I'll stick to it until the Linux ecosystem finally settles down a little, nowadays it's far too volatile.
Windows 7 is still usable, nothing to feel weird.

And that's the big difference to Windows XP, which makes those two systems incomparable: Windows XP was the last Windows OS to use the NT 5 Kernel. With Windows Vista, NT 6.0 was introduced. And even though Windows 7 is called Windows 7, it still uses the same Kernel. So does Windows 8.1 and even 10 (even though they renamed it some years ago) still uses NT 6. When Windows XP reached the End Of Life , it was visibly out of date. It became increasingly difficult to make software compatible for NT 5 and NT 6 at the same time. And not only that: With NT 6, the jump to 64 Bit was made, which made programs much more powerful. There was also a 64-bit version for XP, but nobody really wanted it, because it didn't work very well. You could also see it on the surface, since Windows Vista also introduced anti-aliasing, while with XP you can still see every pixel.
So the jump from XP to 7 was massive. But what about 10? It's not really different. It's still a 64-bit system, has the same kernel, and looks pretty much the same. In my opinion, the support for Windows 7 ended way too early considering that the outdated XP was supported for 13 years, so over two years longer than originally planned. Windows 7, on the other hand, was shot down on time after 10 years. Microsoft is not interested in the fact that a good quarter of all PCs worldwide still run Windows 7, nor that it is actually still very modern. It's a punch in the face in my opinion. Windows 10 isn't that successful because it's good. It is so successful because there is no alternative. And that's actually really sad.
By the way: In 2017 Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 for newer hardware. You're able to install it and it works just fine, but you won't get any more updates, because Microsoft blocks it. To be clear: Windows 8.1 was less than four years old at the time. A system that was almost as good as new was shot down to keep the numbers of Windows 10 increasing.

Whenever I decide to change the colors for win10 just to have some variety every once and a while, it always feels lackluster and just end up going back to the colors and themes I was using prior. win7 by default is just so aesthetically pleasing to look at. When it comes to discord, chrome, or any other app that's converted to this simple design I always look for the ones that were used during win7 and replace the icon with that version.

i used to use windows 7, but when i got a new computer it had windows 10 pre installed, and now i updated to windows 11 only 2 months after windows 10; fast switch but i generally really like the newer windows 11 for its new ui and feature changes.

@@hellomine2849 I dualboot 8.1 and Ubuntu but having 8.1 is just 200 wasted GB on my drive because I have no drivers for wifi, graphics, and sound that work properly. Which is odd, because Dell says my laptop is compatible with 8.1

Wrong windows 10 earlier was good but now it is garbage updates break things like my drivers stops working or defender eating up 2gb ram(yes that happened to me)

telemetry, inconsistencies (as he said), dull look, freaking CANDY CRUSH SODA SAGA, forces edge AND the new edge on you, updates usually make things (such as aeroglass and themes) stop working, not as suitable for people with bad computers, it gets drivers automatically (ohhh, remember the old days of installing drivers manually?), the new start menu (i wanna see my recently used apps not a-z apps)

Still enjoying Win 7. I might set up dual boot to try a few newer games but it's a hard debate. In the meantime I did a comprehensive tuneup then added ram and switched my boot drive to solid state. What a difference in boot time and speed :D

You should use the Windows 7 extended kernel, it allows for Windows 10 applications to work in Windows 7!
Just watching the footage of Seven and seeing how snappy and responsive it is gave me chills. Ten has come a long way, but it still feels bloated and slow as all hell.
Try turning of animations in windows 10 it makes it run a lot more responsive.

@Jill-Al :D the computer the computer the computer!!! Doing stuff on a phone is such a pain in the ass, having a full screen, the extra processing power, and not to mention the full keyboard and mouse will alleviate a lot of stress in your life.

Ive never ecperienced a single issue with windows 10, I get that people have a problem with the ui but windows 7 looks terrible too

Actually the cascading menus from Win 95 & XP were better for power users with lots of programs who like to organize them visually, but you can do that with Win 7 as well with Classic Shell.
As an avid Windows 7 user to this day, I do acknowledge that Vista did basically everything first, even if I've never used Vista more than like twice.
The main reason Windows 7 is my favorite os is because I have almost never had problems with it compared to 10 and 11 and its just very aesthetically pleasing with the aero effects. Windows 7 also has really nice sound effects as well. I grew up using Windows 7 and 10 but Windows 7 takes the cake as my favorite os. Windows 8 and 8.1 were a mess for me lol.
These are the reasons why I'm downgrading to windows 7
My problems on windows 10:
1. Black screen of death when I boot up or restart so I need to end wsappx task 1/2 times
2. Bad performance (the system is literally using more than 50% ram or cpu)
3. Lots of errors when I want to play my games (except for favourite ones)
4. Microsoft store and all games that are installed from it are not opening
5. No aero glass and old sounds that windows vista/7 used

Pheww thank you for saying this! I'm also a fan of Windows 7 and sure, there are some minor inconveniences like no colorful emoji support etc, but it is STILL the best windows OS I've tried yet. Windows 10 was horribly buggy and bloated, not to mention UGLY with those huge tabs and all, why the material style changes always veer toward more bulky and ugly, I don't understand!

I miss the aesthetic of Windows 7. It felt so unique. Unlike the newest OS where it’s following that “simplified” corporate style.
I like windows 7 because it's extremely user friendly and that's what makes Windows 7 very fun.

I held out using windows 7 until september 2020. Back in 2017 I had tried using windows 10 on a laptop for school only for it to fully brick all networking on a weekly basis. The only way to fix it was with a system restore which isnt okay when I need to do school work. On top of all the other issues with windows 10 at the time it just wasnt a good option and really tuned me off using it for a long time. I am happy with windows 10 now and probably wouldnt go back but it took a lot of work to get my installation to this point with many of the annoyances simply not existing or being an issue in windows 7.
I bought my HP back in 2013 and I'm still using the computer to this day and it suits me very fine just did a few upgrades still running Windows 7

There is on my second laptop i use windows 8 (without .1) and turn off the program of update in Task Manager (Start+R\msconfig\ 3 line \ update windows ).

3:37 There is two separate settings menus in Windows 10, they should NOT have added "Settings", now I get confused whether to look in "Settings" or "Control Panel" when I need to change a setting. It was an attempt to make things easier but it just makes things more confusing.

The boot logo, the sfx, the transparency, and the UI are all so nostalgic.
I upgraded to Windows 10 in 2017, it's a good OS but it does crash more often on my Lenovo Thinkpad.
I switched to MacOS Monterary and I absolutely hated it. Everything is just hard to do if you are a Windows user.

Still running Windows 7 on my main desktop. Still getting updates with the ESU patch until 2023 and even until 2024 due to a Windows Embedded POSReady 7 being updated until October 8, 2024. I'm happy to see that there are still Win7 users in 2020!

Interesting. The company I work for is very high tech, and we used Windows 7 until about a year and a half ago. The IT team told us it was more secure and more stable than newer Windows.

I really want to use windows 7 again because of it looks! So I'm really wanting to change the look of Windows 10 or 11!

Imho it's all about the hardware and designation assigned to your specific PC. For ex. I know a person that has 10yo working XP because he's converting old tapes to digital files. Or, a person who has win7 and loves retro games won't dare to reinstall them on win10 because they run better on his older hardware (yes, such thing exists).

Yep, I just made similar setup, I don't know why but I could not install Hauppage capture card and its software under Windows 7. With XP and P4 it just works. Now I have designated P4 box just for video capture.

They should just admit their mistake and return classic start menu completely. They still didn't accept reality, they are returning it very slowly because they want to mask their mistake. Classic start menu is still superior to modern start menu in case of effectivity of using your PC. Also MS still didn't fix search, it's broken since Windows Vista, I don't understand it.....search worked fine last time in XP.
@@Pidalin they probably won't fix it, mainly because the classic start menu doesn't fit with Windows 10, and as much as I hate its UI its design is what makes it Windows 10.

I hate having to use win 10 due to some comparability issues with programs i have to use for my study. There is just so much wrong with the system . since i have started using 10 it
- destroyed itself with an unauthorized update (which was fun bc it was the end of my first semester and i failed 3 classes bc i couldn't recover project data)
- corrupted important data after an update (I could fix that tho)
-forced me to switch my offline account to an online one to repair a corrupted update ( which it didn't suchende in repairing and is still annoying me about )
-forced me to clone the os to my sdd which i only used to store simulation buffers for the load time bc the os started to run unstable with the os still being on the hdd even tho it had been running that way for roughly two years without problem (and yes i know faster boot times and all but i liked knowing that the os was on the 'cheaper' hardware i could just yeet out of the window )
-and it forced me to wipe my old laptop with win7 so i could perform data recovery (i down graded again but it was still annoying)
and the best part even even if I would want to upgrade to win11 I can't ( with the official method anyway lol) bc despite my hardware meeting all the requirements and secure boot being enabled it doesn't recognize it for what ever reason. and i don't have the patients to doctor around in the Bios or use the work around.
I am thinking on switching to linux and using virtuals but truth be told the programs i work with are not exactly the most stable ones so I kinda don't want to risk it.
I shifted to windows 10 just 2 years before and I love my windows 10 so much. You can disable the ads in settings
1:11 I'm a huge fan of Windows Vista, it's a very safe, solid, stable OS, and also the beautiest one i've ever seen. I think the only reason to many people disliked it was because they ran it in poor hardware, like machines with 512MB of RAM and/or not enoughtly good video cards, expecting it to run as fast as Windows XP on the same old computer, blaming the OS, forgetting that Vista does a lot more than XP, and due to this, it needs more resources to do its tasks.
I agree, also I think the whole issue with OEM computers having the sticker Windows Vista capable made it worse.

Not entirely true, for some reason Vista copied vram contents into ram tanking performance, windows 7 on the same low ram systems is much faster.

I dual boot 7 and 10, but recently I've found myself using 7 more than 10, even though I always planned on using 10 more than 7.
I used to run windows 7 on a laptop that (i think) was built for windows vista. it was old and at the end of it's run, half of the clamshell was broken. Battery life was also terrible and I had to have the charger plugged in near constantly. Amazingly, the computer actually lasted for some time until I guess i banged it in frustration one time too many. The computer hasn't gotten past the boot screen ever since. Despite that, I would probably go back if I had the money to get a laptop that supports the OS, even if it was just for nostalgia purposes.
the duplicate programs are actually kinda nice, if the newer or older version doesnt have a feature then you can look to the other one and getting to choose different uis is cool too although i do see why people would want only one, im a tinker-y girl so i love my options hehe

@@worstalentscout Hi and sadly Windows 7 doesnt work with any of the new APU's from AMD since the GPU part has no official drivers for Windows 7. If you didnt get that CPU then yes the rest is fine as the Motherboard should still support Windows 7 been a B450 Chipset. Hope this helps :)

I found Windows 10 a downgrade on hard drives too. The OS is so impatient, any unexpected delays cause multiple programs to freeze up instead of the usual single program freezing when things are backlogged.
The freezing happens more often but it also resolves much faster. It feels like 7 has programs line up and actually wait their turn. Meanwhile, in Windows 10, if a program freezes for too long, the program just crashes entirely. It's a car crash of impatient programs that jumped the gun.
Needing a hardware upgrade in order to function at a basic level is a major downgrade. It almost feels like they purposely rigged it to mess up if you're not running on a SSD.
The thing is that hard drives, while not as fast as SSDs are way better at consistent transfer speeds. SSDs are 200MBps for about 5 seconds and then it gets cut in half for 3 seconds and then after 30 seconds it starts really slowing down because the drives are programmed to bottleneck the writing so as not to overheat the drive.
Furthermore, I have unlimited writes on my HDD, I don't have to worry about how many write cycles I've gone through because I can infinitely reuse my drive so long as nothing breaks.
After using Windows 7 for several years, I got a new Windows 10 pc, but several of my programs won't work. I have been using Windows Movie Maker 2012 for years to edit Tivo videos, but it won't work for Tivo videos in Windows 10. What can I do?
Learn to edit videos on Vegas Pro or Adobe Premiere.
I use Windows 8.1 and it suits my compatibility. BTW, I also use Manjaro Linux and I love it.

I think in windows 12 there should be aero glass background like there is in windows 7 aswell as a new browser (still keep ms edge for a bit longer after that tho), also should be custom colours for taskbar. Remember this is just my opinion

So happy you made this video. You included pretty much everything I think about Windows 10. After 5 years of usage, I still don't really like it, and it feels like it still has plenty of pediatric diseases and optimization problems, not even talking about those resource killer background tasks that Win10 is constantly runnig anyways. Windows 7 just felt so complete with a very well designed and user-friendly UI, that is consistent and logical. I've recently got an old netbook as a secondary device for my trips, which I installed Win7 Pro on. I was shocked how good Win7 actually was, it's a joy to use after years of only interacting with Win10. I'm planning on downgrading my 7-year-old PC as well, and merely keeping Win10 on my main notebook.

I'm completely on the same boat, but had to unfortunately change over to 10 like yesterday. The main reasons was software compability. I could get Blender running thanks to a folk that recompiled it to 7, but my Autodesk apps got more and more broken because of "lack of support". I'm glad it at least turned on at all, but there were annoying bugs like trying to input a number that changed when you pressed enter. It felt like it's actually done to bug you, not as a random bug. Got to also say I'm also running HDD and yes, I've noticed 10 is slower and hangs up randomly on opening apps. I have modern hardware and if not for the lack of program compability (and god damn f*cking DX12 not working on 7) I would stay on 7. It's just so more stable, I never got any BSODs, it was fast, beautiful and you had TOTAL COMPLETE control about what the system is doing in the background, while 10 is like "oh, you want your drivers? get lost, I'll install my own without telling you!". Instead of feeling excited like I was when jumping XP to 7, it's a "meh". It doesn't have anything worth upgrading. Also - the UI is garbage, I've always hated it. 11 isn't better in that regard, it's trying to copy Linux distributions so much that it's funny, while being so broken I have no idea how they could release it.
Final words - Microsoft, maybe try to test your updates before releasing? I've never had a Win 7 update break my whole PC, while on other computers I've used a random update could make the whole PC unusable, break the drivers, break the sound, break the printer, just who the hell bugtests your updates? It's all gone downhill since 7. People though Vista was bad, it was actually decent compared to the show we have now.

I don't know how you see it, but I have a feeling which tells me that sooner or later older Windows versions, Adobe Flash and discontinued media like VHS tapes will return. For example many people wanted Vinyl Records to come back and in 2012 they returned to the market. So there's probably a bigger chance that all of these discontinued things will make a comeback.

I stuck with Windows 8.1 for a really long time (all the way from Mid 2016 until May of this year) and finally switched over to Windows 10, but I went down the LTSC route, it had none of the crap in it and I don't use the Windows Store or anything, it's kinda like Windows 7 but it's actually just Windows 10
I run Windows 7 too (PC is a decade old but upgraded with some new parts). It's just damn discriminating how companies abandoned it because now I'm stuck with a Razer Cynosa keyboard that doesn't do flashy RGB stuff due to Razer not developing driver versions compatible with windows 7
