I spent 4 days on the tutorial since I'm from EU and didn't really speak English well as a kid. This garage was most difficult thing I've ever done as I had to kinda guess and memories what each thing was lol
This was me aged 6. Gave up and never played it again after so many attempts

Yea, the little mini games where you could run from the cops in (I think San Francisco) was crazy. No other games like this at the time
I remember looking at this first cut scene, dreaming that one day I would play games with those graphics. Well, We have games now that are waayy more realistic than that cut scene.

To be fair, the lighting in that cut scene is done really well. To get dynamic lighting like that in real time was definitely some ways off when this came out. Otherwise those graphics have no business looking that good, but with some artistic vision you can make things seem really nice .
It has a nice style, pretty real for the year it was made
With half baked games season passes and less gameplay xd
I remember playing this all night when I was 16 or something, when I turned off the playstation at about 6am as the sun was coming up, I couldn't get to sleep because I could still hear the cop sirens in my head hahaha

A masterpiece for its time. Finished it twice and spent hours and hours just driving about. It was a first of its kind it made us dream of the future capabilities. Never even imagined something like Gta5 online would exist.
Lol, I remember having such a pain in the ass time getting past that test at the beginning and almost giving up on the entire thing.
I had the exact same thing I was 13 and I got so pissed I turned off my ps and was crying haha took me 2 hours to finally pass that stupid garage mission.
Yeah, was hard at first, but then Also it taught us how to drive stylishly in games, so I can't really complain with that. ;)
This brings back great memories of one of the first friends I made when moving to a new town. We spent so much time playing games at his house. Sadly he passed away in 2016 and I still think about him every day. Seeing these games on youtube these days brings back these memories and makes me kind of sad that he's not around to see all the new ones coming out.

I've always dreamt of playing games like this with unlimited draw distance.
I already thought of that, but I think it could look weird at certain edges of the map where there's no playable area past the game's original draw distance so they would just be empty.

Me and my little brother still talk about this game. Loved throwing the car round corners. The driving felt great back in the day. Haven't played in years.
I remember that I was like 7 or 8 when I got this game, I was so happy to get it. As soon as I get home from the store I popped in my ps1, saw the initial cut scene and then was completely lost with the tutorial. I must have spent like a good 2 hours trying to figure it out. After like 3 days in a row of trying, I gave up, never touched it again. Still remember the game every now and then…..how much fun it would of been if I could pass the tutorial.
Really wish I could look it up in the internet back in the day.

The car park test is notoriously difficult and options were git gud or quit. It was many years after when I learned that it was a homage to a 1978 movie, The Driver, where the main character had to prove he's up to the job.

I love the soupy handling of the cars, GTA needs to take notes.
GTA with the handling of Driver would have been perfect. You could feel the springs and the weight of the cars.

This game helped teach me how to drive along with Porsche Unleashed. Had a driving wheel on my PC I think every kid should!

oh man, the render distance sucks, ha ha. anyway: this game still has one of the best digital controls for vehicles of all time. it still plays so buttery smooth, that it's a shame we can't just mod it easily! what an absolute masterpiece!

I used to LOVE doing the roof glitch. I would hit a car and disable it in front of the Miami bridge and gain speed, jump off the bridge onto the roof of the car I hit and watch my car fly into the sky and break the game lmao

Read an early article about this game talking about concepts like walking about the city, entering buildings, maybe playing some arcade games. I’m not sure exactly what was said but I got so hyped up. When I finally saw it on store shelves I begged my parents to buy it for me. I never managed to get passed the garage tutorial 😢

I remember this game. I also remember never making it past the tutorial.
When the tutorial is the hardest mission in the game lol. But its so worth it. I loved the mini game where you have to avoid the cops as long as possible. In San Fran I would go down a hill then immediately brake and reverse and watch the police cars go flying overhead, the ultimate goal being to make it to the bridge. It never gets old, even when you mess it up lol
Also the World Trade Center is in the game (for younger players who might not recognize it)
Dude, I used to do the same thing all the time, and had some awesome replays saved where the cops would land on top of me at the perfect angle to blast them into fecking outer space. Lord I loved this game, that mode was def one of the best too, and the ai cops actually were dang good.
@@tylerevans1700 yes the cops are so aggressive, you can use it to your advantage. You can orchestrate some wild car chases and then watch the replay. Love this game
Damn, when you see it like this, it almost looks like a flash game you could find on Miniclip in the early 2000s.

I could NEVER finish the last mission. And the passenger kept saying “nice driving, son” as the enemies rammed us like crazy. I remember giving up saying “it’s bugged”
