    Aircraft drill bits were originally designed to be used on aircrafts, as the name suggests! You were able to drill holes through deep cavities and then through thin materials.

    • @kalebszymanski4538

      Yeah thats right, as an aircraft mechanic every time you need to drill something on an aircraft you can rarely get the drill in the tight space so the longer drill bits are used to make it much easier

    An aircraft bit is an old school name for the days when aircraft were made of wood frames and covered in treated cloth materials and when mechanics needed to reach into the framing/cloth covering for whatever reason that drilling was required, they used these long bits. In the 25 years I was in the USAF, I never heard of this terminology. However, I have read about it. In my USAF career we referred to them as the bit diameter size by the length of the bit, like 1/4-inch X 10". We never had much need for drill bits like that, but we would need long drivers occasionally. And we also required driver bits with universal joint in them to get around objects, precluding having to remove said objects. In the USAF, repair time, turnaround is very significant so as to get the aircraft back into service. Fly, fight, WIN!
    A little flux and solder will prevent the cables from getting frayed while feeding through the flanges/posts.

  • @buttfingerblaster
    @buttfingerblaster 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I know with swaging control cables on aircraft, you make 3 crimps. First in the middle, second at the termination/turnbuckle end, and the third at the cable end, and all in the same orientation

  • @hallenw
    @hallenw 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Make a U shaped jig. Take two 2x4’s the width of the posts, drill a hole through the center of one, stack the two together and drill through the first and into the second. Screw a board to connect the two drilled boards together into the U shape. Now you have a jig to drill through each side half way to meet in the middle. It will take far less time to make the jig than it took me to type this! 😂

Takes the guess work out of trying to hit it from each side.

    • @frankhazzard3250

No drilling requires and holds the post tighter than a cold weather nut sack

We tried to achieve cold welding using hand tools and copper wire, steel wire and steel cable. There was almost a 100% failure rate among those wires and cables that were crimped by hand. A ratcheting crimping tool was necessary to achieve a true cold welding. And even then, there was about a 20-25% rate of failure.

      The cracks, known as checking, is due to the natural shrinking and swelling that the pine goes through being exposed to the elements. If you fill it, it won’t always stay filled and can sometimes end up looking worse. Not always tho, it’s kind of a crap shoot. Anything left outside is so unpredictable.

    Correct. Also these long drill bits are used to install wiring for security systems in existing homes. Most are 3' or 4' long and 3/16" diameter and have a hole in the tip for a wire to pull the thicker wire cable through the hole 's opening.

    You know, guys, I have not missed a single ''episode''. I have always wanted to move to and live in either Oregon or Washington state. But the views from the job sites you guys construct and create at are magnanimous and absolutely riveting! Then I stumbled upon ''Donnie Laws'' and his content on Appalachia, (myths, superstitions, old homes and farms.......), Now I am really having a hard time making up my mind on where to live when I move. I really want to leave the insanity of Southern California behind, Even if I am like 10th generation or more. Thank you ''PERKINS CREW''!

    I make a little plywood square jig that you clamp around the posts and you just use the 'right angle of the plywood to help guide your drill bit through the posts (drilling posts on both sides), it works really well and your holes are accurate without having to 'eyeball' your drill bit for level/square and plumb, it's pretty accurate and your holes will line up well, no second guessing! Takes 10 minutes to knock up and you just clamp it onto your posts (Irwin quick clamps) to drill your holes.
    Run your cables through each post (put some painters tape on each end of each post so you don't get confused as to which cable is what as you go and then thread your capping on as the same time with each post (it's a bit time consuming but it's the way to do it, that way you don't or won't risk feather out your cable strands or your cables all out of level/alignment) Just a thought or tip.

    Jamie. Seems to me that drilling through posts accurately is an opportunity for you to invent a seriously time-saving accurate jig. Something like a scaled up doweling jig. One that self centres on the post. I’m already looking forward to it…

    Some long drill bits have a small hole near the tip, so you can pull small wire back through the hole. Commonly used by telephone, sound , and alarm installers.
