      Well, cheeks are muscle so stop using it, they'll eventually atrophy. Don't worry muscle atrophy takes less time time building muscle. Probably takes about 2 months to notice significant changes to your cheeks

    Dr mew, why don't you make a film of how the real thing works; show the tongue moving inside the move, with the positions and movements it should make and the swallowing of the saliva, as well as the position of the spine and body posture. Now that would be most helpful and you would get more fans and followers. Once you achieve that, they will demand their dentist to provide them with your apparatus and stop having their children and their own teeth pulled.

The good news is it’s been a relatively short time since all this happened, like a few months to a year, so I’ve been getting back in the habit quite quick. Sir- You've done videos explaining vertical asymmetry, but I don't believe you've ever explained the causes of HORIZONTAL asymmetry. When the jaws shift horizontally to one side causing the entire midline and nose to be off-center and one side of the lip to be longer in horizontal length than the other side. (easily measured from the iris of the eyes) Doctors often mistake this for one cheekbone being smaller than the other etc and will suggest implants and rhinoplasty when the true culprit is the maxilla. I would attach my own case if I could to show as an example, but I believe quite a few adults have this and it would be helpful if you explain the causes of this horizontal shift.

    • @annaknowsu
      @annaknowsu 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I've seen those videos and the pictures in the thumbnails seem to indicate that the nasal midline is in the center, but only begins to shift starting under the nose. I am referring to the entire midface being off center along with the cheekbones. There must be a difference between people who only have that bony shift from below the nose down to those that have it from the top of the nose down.

  • @katherinekvon
    @katherinekvon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You say that you are unaware if an adults maxilla can grow. Are you measuring your own maxillary growth ? You're jaw is indeed much larger since your first videos. Is this muscle growth or bone growth. P.s. Thank you.. 2 weeks ago I had an over bite. Thank you for helping me understand my jaw. I lost my posture after a car accident.. but I have been watching you aswell as combining it with a daily inversion, a d yoga in the hydrapool. • @lpsp442
    @lpsp442 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    That reference at the end made me chuckle.
    So it's best to put the tongue completely on the roof of the mouth, every bit of the top in contact with every bit of the roof, that just the tip with the mount behind the front incisors? I've studied myself with different tongue postures, and putting the tongue right at the top causes a bulge to emerge under my jaw, which makes me look chinless. A short-term price I'm willing to pay, but I have to know if I'm doing something wrong? As putting the tongue merely at the tip tucks it in and results in a clean, flushed look.

    • @StuartRW64
      @StuartRW64 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Scrath Folchester Really? It SHOULD have the complete opposite effect. I don't wish to insult you and say "oh, well you're probably doing it wrong!". However, I suspect you may not have the back of your tongue completely up. Try this:
      Bite your teeth together and do a cheesy smile. Cheese it up and raise your eyebrows high. Put the tip of your tongue where you have been putting it and swallow. If this is your first time swallowing correctly, then you may notice it to be rather difficult or an odd feeling. Try and sense the back of your tongue going up and remember that sensation. Now, try swallowing again but this time try and pause the action mid-swallow so that your tongue is up in the back of your mouth. If done correctly, you won't be able to inhale or exhale.
      Remember this posture. This is how far back and up your posterior third need to be (although a tiny bit forward so that you can breath ;)).
      The space under your jaw is actually your tongue. The more you strengthen it the tighter it should get down there (within limits, obviously).
      You can also try exercises for strengthening your tongue. Search for some Myofunctional exercises.

    • @lpsp442
      @lpsp442 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, I followed the procedure you described and arrived at the tongue posture I had been using, with the tip behind the teeth, the flesh underneath my jaw (yes I know it's my tongue, I'm not blind) tucked up and incapable of breathing through my mouth, but my tongue isn't completely in the roof of my mouth in that posture and the roof of my mouth is not completely covered by my tongue.
      This could just be a product of my malocclusion, but my maloclussion isn't particularly extreme or unusual. It seems to me that getting the front of the tongue behind the front teeth and then pulling as much of the rest of the tongue up to achieve that vacuum gap is the desired effect for someone without ideal dental arches, and complete coverage is impossible or inessential.
      (ps I doubt that I'd have been insulted if you'd told me that I was doing something wrong, given the fact that I was bloody well asking about it. However, the implication that I would be insulted is itself slightly insulting. Not enough that I'm not grateful for your input, it's great to discuss this stuff, but for future reference, when trying to avoid offense, the less assumptions you make about the other party = the better.)

    My problem with the "tongue sweep" is that we are said not to "suck in" or "suck the teeth" but the vacuum in the mouth from correct tongue posture seems to pull on my teeth when I move the tongue. Is this okay or will it have negative effects in the long term?

    • @DavidLee-sz1gj
      @DavidLee-sz1gj 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      its not correct if its sucking on ur teeth or pulling on ur teeth. it should only suck on the hard palate. if its sucking on the teeth u have a habit of teeth sucking when swallowing. this sucking habit is whats causing your malocclusion. it will have negative effects since itll suck in ur skull and make u not have cheekbones and a narrow palate. The sucking is a light, subconscious force. You should not be sucking at all when u tongue sweep or swallow. You should be putting a push force when sweeping or swallowing never a negative sucking force. You need to break that habit and while your resting or not doing anything check if u want to suck on ur teeth or w.e. You need to be constantly moving your tongue with a force not a suck. It developed that sucking habit cuz ur tongue got weak. train it and your teeth should naturally straighten and ur palate should widen. Good luck.

      And now it is two months gone by. I do think about this position a lot of the time. I've worked through several iterations of this advice. There was a while that I doubted my own ability to swallow or everything else but that's come back around again. I'm amazed though at how much I think about it and how much I have to remind myself. Surely I'll get there. Just have to keep on "one step at a time". Thanks!

    Dr. Mew, does the tongue touch the bottom teeth when it comes up to the hard palate in the process of tongue sweeping? Or does it not touch the teeth at all in the whole process? I'm afraid I'm pushing my teeth forward, possibly causing them to move forward too over time, which would make them look bad aesthetically.

    So dr Mew, while I know you are dead on with your findings, I have a malocclusion because of my teeth being shaved on by several dentists trying to fix my bite because of one dentists jacking it up! My bite is too close now, so what I’ve naturally done was try and keep my tongue positioned up, like you explain, to help keep my jaws more comfy and teeth apart because they hurt when I bite because they don’t fit together properly. When eating I try not to chew to hard or else the teeth will bang and possibly chip slightly...molars. Also want to mention I have now developed an open bite and no canine guidance now. Will this technique of me trying to remember to keep my tongue up at all times help my bite or am I fighting a losing battle and need to get my teeth fixed with crowns or maybe bonding? which I’m actually petrified of taking on 😕Thanks

    I'm fine with the tongue to the roof part and the swallowing but I just cannot do any of the sweeping. My tongue feels suctioned to the roof of my mouth and I automatically kind of suck the saliva into place so I can do the swallow. But I guess that is really bad. I don't use any face muscles while swallowing but I assume the sucking comes from the buccinator. But trying to loosen the tongue from it's place on the roof is so hard because it is suctioned there aswell so I basically have to "plop" it off there. I feel like such an idiot because this all seems impossible for me to do.

    Secondly when I do this I feel a vibrating in my throats and its hard to breathe and makes a noise. Will this go away over time? Even if I only do this for 6 hours a day because I cannot breathe like this at school.
