  • On this episode of Below The Boat, we head offshore from Tampa Bay in the Sportsman 227 bay boat. Treacherous fog lead to a late start but it was well worth the wait. Although the bite was slow, we managed to catch a new PB Mangrove Snapper, along with Gag Grouper, Red Grouper, Grunts, and a large Porgy. We primarily fished ledges and chummed heavy in order to entice the bite. We hope y'all enjoy fishing with us. LIKE and SUBSCRIBE if you want to see more videos like this one.

    Fun to watch. What leader did you have with the 20lb braid? Surprised you were able to get them off the bottom! Nice job!

    Just ran across the channel....already a fan! I’ve been in the area for 5 yrs now, retired from the military...so now I have more time to fish! You weren’t kidding about TBFC....Todd & Chad have been slaying the Mangrove Snapper & Red/Gag Grouper in the bay. I’ve learned so much from those guys! I’m going offshore next week to go Hogfishing. I was unsure about 10 lb braid w/20 lb fluorocarbon leader as this is my go-to setup on a 4000 Sahara Shimano and 20 lb mono/30 lb fluro on a 5000 Daiwa....feel better about the 10/20 setup now after watching this vid! Thanks guys!

    Love the videos. Just got a boat and went out Tuesday in Tampa day close to the bridge. My first experience with zero visibility fog, scary to say the least. As a new boater you guys are really helping me. Keep up the great work. Quick video of my experience on Tuesday Clearwater boating journey is my channel .

      Great thanks so much for the comment. Yah we will not be taking the boats out ever again if it says patchy fog or fog to any degree. Having a boat is like the greatest toy in the world so enjoy and be safe.

    We were on south side of channel in the 90s near the anchorage. No loran. Fog rolled in. Scary when you smell diesel & hear ships fog horns. Had bottom finder so we new when we crossed the channel to Bunces pass. Powered up a little. As we got closer we saw a dark line. Thought it was trees as we got closer it turned out to be a log on the beach. Made it around the bar to the ramp.

      Dude I was literally sweating reading your comment!!!! It is so dangerous on the water I’m glad y’all made it in safe. When we were comin in I was a little nerve racked because I saw 3-4 boat wakes all headed in different directions and could not hear or see boats very scary. Thanks for the comment!

    Just spent a month in Tampa and learned to really appreciate mangos. Super jealous of the size you were catching but we were relegated to the bay. Gotta get off shore the next time im there.

    • @belowtheboat3482
      @belowtheboat3482  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you do cause catching big mangos is so much fun!!!! You know when you come back a lot of guys do awesome for big mangos in the shipping channel specifically in summertime. Also I do fairly well on bridges just depends on what style you like. Full on summertime is great for big mangos inside the bay. A great channel for learning more about this is “Tampa bay fishing channel” on TH-cam. I don’t know if your familiar with their channel but they have a lot of content for big mangos and gags in the shipping channel. They pretty much got it buttoned up in my opinion!! Thanks for the comment and if you come back and do good I’d love to hear about it in this comment section!!!

    What's the lengths on those rods? Thanks

    • @belowtheboat3482
      @belowtheboat3482  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most are just 7.6 rods except for one is an 8 ft with a 6500 size reel. The only reason I have that set up is for big snook and big tarpon. I take it offshore as a backup for bigger fish. The most common setup we use is 4500 with a standard 7.6 rod and 10lb braid and a 20-30lb fluorocarbon leader. Thanks for the question and checking out the video

    Safety first, then teamwork. Was the slammer everything you hoped? What weight braid and leader were you running?

    • @belowtheboat3482
      @belowtheboat3482  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The slammer is so good John has decided to buy one as well. More than what I hoped for!! I run 10lb braid and in this video I was using 20lb fluorocarbon seagaur brand and I was using a 3/4 oz weight. But looking back I would have stepped up to a 1 oz because it was hard to find bottom with the 3/4 oz.

    Would radar have helped in that fog?

    • @belowtheboat3482
      @belowtheboat3482  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never owned or used it so I can’t say. I’m fairly certain that is what most high end boats and big ships are using in these conditions but we just don’t have it. Even with it tho we won’t do the patchy fog again. Super sketchy and just not worth your life, boating accident can happen so fast and that same day at Skyway area there was a boating accident 7 people injured. I must have seen 10-15 boats skirtin across the water, way outside channel markers.

    • @CaptCollier
      @CaptCollier 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. I have radar on my bay boat specifically for Foggy mornings and running at night.
