"A wise man silently cuts off three types of people: those who borrow and never return, those who promise and never deliver, and those who listen but never hear."
My late husband was one of the Clemens family and not very far removed from Samuel Clemens. He could have been his twin, the likeness is so similar. He too was intelligent, clever, humorous and kind. I still miss him. I’ve missed him for nine years now.
It's difficult to listen to the brilliance of Mark Twain quoted so flatly, without irony or humor. Great quotes, but they are best delivered by someone who actually had a sense of their context and meaning.
Actually, Twain was then a world wide sensation, and if anyone is privileged to read it, he still is. In my youth, we had Jean Shepherd, who had a talk show on WOR radio in the early sixties, his tapes were destroyed by an idiot on the radio station after he left, and now only available on some DIY recordings by fans and posted on TH-cam; Mad Magazine articles, and the feature film "A Christmas Story". So similar!
The most profound quote IMHO is: "I don't fear death. Before I was born, I had been dead for billions and billions of years and never suffered any inconvenience."
And Mark Twain didn't say it. it is actually a paraphrased version of a quote from the book "The 48 Laws of Power" by Robert Greene. The original quote reads: "Never put yourself in a position where you have to beg for someone's attention. You should always be in a position to walk away."
Most of the Mark Twain's quotations are based on the common knowledge, but each of them sounded to me like a revelation I heared for the first time. As a wise genius, with a keen sense of humor, he doesn't teach us - he shares with us his vast, life experience. But this one: " Forgiveness, is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the hill that has crushed it.", in particulary, touched my heart. It's so refined, so heartfelt...Twain, as a great poet, has raised the meaning of Forgiveness to the highest poetic level - sad, enlightening and unforgettable!

His timeless advice reminds us of the importance of courage, kindness, and living authentically. Thank you for sharing such valuable insights!
Guys thanks for putting this together. Not perfect but very worthwhile to listen to Twain. People need to read his books, especially his autobiography. Twain is truly America's Prophet.
People often forget that being honest is so much less work than constantly trying to support a web of deception. I think that for this reason honest people not only have a cleaner conscience, they probably live longer too.
Thank you for re-sharing the often humorous, typically accurate knowledge, wisdom and insightful Southern thoughts and intertwining observations from this famous southerner from Missouri !! 😂

Excellent advice from our Manifest Destiny era. Samuel Clemens, an acquaintance of US Grant, presold Grant's memoirs to enable Grant to die more peacefully from throat cancer, 1885, as he had money issues, and did not want to leave his family destitute upon death. An amazing time, unfortunately not to return. Twain embraced Stoic values, along with an enduring sense of humor. Quite an amazing man of the 19th century. Thanks and subscribed.
Always remember that what comes from the heart is acted upon by the mind. Holy spirit conscienceness that dwells within us. Praise Emmanuel #Bff❤
Nor have they seen killer whales torturing seals, and they have never looked up the chimpanzee wars, they have never seen what nomad lions do to hyenas. i could go on , but i believe the point is made.
The difference is: a cat is a hunter. An orca is a hunter. With regards to the cat: if domesticated, as those most familiar to us are- the hunting instinct is hampered and morphed by regular feeding times and litter boxes. Deep inside, they are still hunters- with no clear understanding of why they aren’t hunting. Hence: feather toys, lights, catnip mice, etc. Humans, on the other hand, glory in making tv shows and media that revel in people being cruel to each other. Pretty sure a cat or an orca has no need of putting others down for amusement. They just want to eat. They are just responding to instinct. IF humans had this instinct, there would be no need for putting others down, back stabbing, etc.- especially once their survival goals of food and shelter are already met. Make sense?
I do love Mark Twain. I must admit however, the delivery seems a well chosen AI type voice, though missing some of the nuance of his satirical intonation on many quotes. All in all, a good collection, none the less.
Twain emphasized the importance of pursuing what truly excites you. As he said, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” Finding and following your passion early can lead to a more fulfilling life and help avoid regrets.
Both my husband and I have always been interested in a number of things,ie: rock climbing, scuba, architecture ( we built our own house), screen printing, photography, he was a graphic artist for a University and I am a singer and musician. We gardened, raised kids and dogs and cats, rode horses, bicycles, etc….you get the drift. Never assume you can have only one passion in life, live your life “ full tilt “ with passion.
