    I live in Denver and I’ve done the mountain passes several times way before the DVR was invented. I have to say this video far surpasses DBR videos that actually gives you better insight as to the terrain and the sections of the DBR thank you for a great video

    Made it! I have watched waayyyyyy too many COBDR videos. This one is by far the BEST ONE. Concise, relevant, informative, credible, etc. etc. This is everything I wanted in a BDR video. Seriously, great job.

      Made it...! I lived in Durango for 13 years so I know a fair amount of this area. Now in Tulsa with a new adventure bike. I guess my timing is off a bit. Thanks for the details on the trip.

    Buena Vista: park at the airport for $5/day. That is what we did. You can also do the COBAT. This turns the ride into a loop, instead of one straight ride with slabbing on either end.

    Great commentary and info. We ran it in 2022 as well and were a week early, Ophir and Hagerman were closed for snow. Still had a blast on all the other passes on a Desert X.

    Couple updates;
    US 50 from Gunnison to Ridgeway closed at blue mesa res. Due to bridge construction; Bypass is 1-3 hours extra.
    Also section ‘one’ is no longer smooth and fast due to heavy rains.

    MADE IT! I am SO pysched to do this route starting September 5th.I can't wait! I'll be on a 2018 AT, and my brother a Norden 901. We'll be riding 2300 miles to get to the BDR from South FL. We'll be hauling ass. I'll let you know if we come out unscathed. I'd like to think we're competent riders. But there is only so much you can do in south FL. I don't mind rocks, sand and water crossings. I'd like to think we're not in over our head for this one. We both got 2 weeks off work to make this happen, it's our first BDR. Super grateful for this opportunity.

    Made it! Great video. A couple buddies and I did it August 20th-25th, 2023. We went north to south and I was on a Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer. Which, is a lot of bike to handle and I wound up skipping Hagerman and did the easy alt for section 2. Overall, awesome experience!

    Section 6, while easy, is very scenic and if you've never done it before, you should. For a place to stay, once you pop out on the road in Wyoming, head West to Baggs and stay at the Cowboy Inn. If you want more riding, try the BDR Red Desert X Loop the next day. Be aware there's a very hard 10+mile section of sand going clockwise on that loop. Also, doing any of the high mtn passes in Colorado after lunch can be dicey due to thunder storms. Before you hit Hagerman, if you're following the schedule laid out here, check the weather. A mid sized Adv bike is still 500lbs, IMO, the best bike for the COBDR is something no larger than a KTM 690/701, those weigh less than 350lbs....

  • @F1since79
    @F1since79 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Made it twice!! Lots of great info. I laid out the ride the exact same way. Also leaving Section 6 as an option, probably run out to 3 Forks and then back to Steamboat. Coming from SoCal, it makes more sense for me to bench my truck in Cortez/Dolores. I put together a route on REVER from Steamboat back. Should take a long day to Montrose and then a quick run down to Dolores and start heading home.

    Well done, well thought out. Wish I had watched this prior to my first BDR.
    Couple things I might add to the list of necessary items:
    Sunscreen, spf lip balm, ear plugs, neck gaiter/full head gaiter, paper map, small towel to clean screen(s)/helmet, backup usb cords/plugs, TP for ‘emergency’ stops, quarters if doing laundry, good pressure gauge, ‘bacon’ tubeless repair kit, hat for off the bike, and water/hydration system.
    May also include a mini/shakedown trip as an idea for beginners…

    Made it, thank you for an awesome, descriptive, and super informational video, planning a run at sections 2,3 and four next summer. Glad you mentioned what time the Passes opened up, I drove ophir pass with the family in the Silverado August 8 in 2021, no snow to be seen but didn’t realize at 12,000 there would still be snow in late July, I’ve backpack a lot up to 13 and usually wait till middle end of June and see a little bit up around 12 but thank you for your information, picking up my 22 triumph tiger rally in the next couple of weeks and can’t wait to start training in the spring in southern Missouri and Arkansas

    • @DansADV
      @DansADV  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear it was helpful. Definitely a good idea to do some training. Depending on your experience level, you might consider a Bill Dragoo adventure training course in Oklahoma City... I highly recommend it to all riders new to big ADV bikes. billdragoo.com/.... that or a guided West38moto.com tour.

      @@DansADV rode my 1250 GS on the Utah BDR and then GCDR through Wyoming and Montana in 2022. Then rode back home to Anchorage. I have a 2023 1290 R now. Rode that up to the Arctic ocean at Tuktoyaktuk, NWT last summer. Itching to do another BDR with that bike though. Would’ve handled the Utah BDR better than the GS did, and the GS wasn’t bad. Thinking about getting an 890 for a sidekick to keep at my buddies house in Pueblo, so was nice to kind of watch you and your kid getting after it with those here.

      Thanks. The only sand I've encountered is the area just north of Gypsum. Like most sand sections, I'm sure it varies from month to month. I've never hit it when it was challenging. If you want to avoid it, head west on I70 out of a Gypsum and then take the Colorado river road north until you reconnect with the trail. It is a beautiful paved road. I don't remember any other sand sections, but you should consult the ridebdr website and fb page for more current information.

      I usually book day 1 maybe 2 in advance, but I don't get too far ahead in case there are unforeseen issues. After day one, I book the day of. No guarantees, but I've not had any issues. If I remember correctly Buena Vista has the fewest rooms, most of the downs have plenty of lodging.

    @dansadv I totally agree with cutting out lame/less cool sections to save time. Is it possible to get your GPS tracks that is different from ridebdr? I'm wanting to do fri-mon and trailer to near Buena Vista (I have a buddy not far from there).

    On your Day 2, after lunch in Lake City, how long does it take you to get from Lake City to Buena Vista? I'm considering an overnight in Lake City.

      Tough to say an exact number, but I'd guess 4 to 6 hours.

    Hello.
    Maid hit!
    A bit off topic.
    What is your opinion of the Kilm Krios Pro?
    I'm looking at it for a hot weather helmet.
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Regards.

      I like it. Very light and comfortable, a bit louder than the xd-4.. Nice that it comes with a transition lens

    How have you liked the 890 compared to the AT? I’m currently debating which one to get. Had a GS1200 and a ktm 690. Want something in between.

      My first-hand experience is with the 2018 AT Adventure Sports, which is bigger and has way fewer features than today's Africa Twins. That said, I loved the AT. It was more comfortable and a better road bike than the 890. But for the tough off-road stuff, I don't think there's a bike out there that comes as off-road ready as the 890. The suspension and lower center of gravity makes a huge difference. It all depends on what you want to do... Either bike should do the COBDR with no issues.

    I have a crf450l and a 890 adv r - which one should i take ? this is my first time doing the alpine loop in co

      The 450L is the safe answer for me, since I don't know your skill level. The 450 will make the hard stuff that much easier and I doubt you'll regret having the smaller bike. That said, the 890 in the right hands is an absolute weapon. If you have moderate skills the 890 should be fine, but if you're a beginner and want to play it safe go with the 450.
