KTM 1290 and BMW GS riding the best of the COBDR the right way. With Bill Dragoo
This video shows extensive footage of what I consider to be the best parts of the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route.. (COBDR). Corkscrew, Hurricane, California, and Engineer passes.
Not only is footage of the passes shown to help those researching the route, but I'm also following the legendary Bill Dragoo. Ride along with me, study his lines, and observe how he makes these passes look easy. (Side note: if you do much research, you'll see tons of guys having big problems on the big bikes on these same passes.)

Great video! What midpipe and exhaust are you running?
Great video. Gave ya a sub. You deserve it for the hard work. Some people don't realize how hard it is to hit that sweet spot.
Thanks, I appreciate it. You're correct, these are a ton of work.
Those are the 3 passes I did while at Dusty Lizard except the opposite direction. So beautiful there. Engineer, I did the year before.
Looks like perfect conditions; wet but not raining! We weren’t so lucky, Corkscrew was very dry and recently graded. NOT fun. Loose dirt and rock. Especially the steep switchbacks were a real treat. At 13:00 min mark; bill was in left hand track with long sweeping blind turn; def. NOT where I would be. FWIW I think you had the correct line. Hard tell, but it seems Bill rides with little to no bend in the knees/hips/arms. Anyone else notice this?
I suspect if Bill was in what he considered to be challenging terrain he would adjust accordingly. As this was not challenging to him, he's probably just conserving energy. I do the same.
Bill's great and so is Dusty...good stuff!!!
Thanks
What an awesome video. Looking forward to seeing more. I also appreciate you letting me know about Bill Dragoo. I’ve just finished up several days of training with Bill and his son, Ben. As a new adventure bike rider, this was an amazing experience. Bill is a super person, and his son is also a great teacher. I look forward to more adventure bike riding, and especially looking forward to riding Colorado trails. Please keep putting these videos together. You do a great job!!!!
That's amazing. So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment.
This was a great comparison, thanks for the vid. I have an Africa Twin and a T7. I rode the T7 for 7 weeks this summer and I just absolutely can't stand it anymore on the highway. My back and shoulders were sore for weeks afterward. On the AT, my back is usually only sore for a couple days lol. I'm split between the 890R and 1290R now. Sometimes I ride fast pavement for 5 LONG days in a row, but then I ride hard off-road where the suspension on the AT and T7 forces me to baby the bike to keep it on the trail and off the rims. I'd love to be able to pick up the pace and have a safer ride off-road. I wonder if the 890R could work if there were enough aftermarket wind protection parts. The screaming wind in your face on a T7 is just brutal all day on the highway, and that's with helmet peak removed. Still can't hear my music beyond 70mph. Also the T7 guzzles fuel too fast at the speeds I cruise at to cover ground on the long boring days. Have to stop every hour for fuel because otherwise you're only working with a couple liters margin for error if you skip that gas station. A minor headwind increase can take that 2 extra liters like nothing and you're bumming for gas on the side of the highway. The 1290R would obviously be better on the highway days, but I'm a short dude so that would limit me a little bit off-road, although to me they all feel like big behemoths so I'm not sure anything between 400-600lbs is much more or less capable in my hands. However when you've been riding all day fully loaded and have to ride through some downtown in 100° heat through 13 stop lights, holding that extra weight up with just one toe in your Astars Tech 7 really sucks lol. The T7 feels taller and heavier than the AT to me in technical terrain which defeats the purpose of even owning the "smaller more off-road focused bike". T7 for sale by the way, 90% highway driven🙂
@@jetmuchacho That’s a lot to think about 😊. it turns out there are no unicorns, maybe someday. I just returned from doing all of the Colorado (COBDR) passes on the 1290, rode 850 miles each way to do it…. and loved the 1290. The stock suspension on the 1290 is way better than the AT or the T7. However, I’m 6”1’ and can basically flat foot it. The 890 has the best suspension of all the stock ADV bikes, and probably has sufficient wind protection? Tough call for sure.
Impressive riding on those big bikes boys!
Thanks
Fun looking trip!! Makes me SO thankful for my lil CRF300L.
I’d want a dual sport for the pace you guys are running, always amazed those that ride big bikes like dirt bikes. That ride is on my bucket list.
It's an amazing ride on any bike, I hope you get to do it someday.
Great highlights! Can you please tell me what trail that is at 11:43? The scenery looks amazing!
I believe that was A4 1/10 rd going into Gateway CO from UT. I'll discuss this quite a bit in episode three, but we ended up having to pivot for a couple of days to avoid the rain. II plan to download the actual .gpx files from my Garmin so I should be able to tell you more then.
Is that stock exhaust?
No... it's the Termignoni
An epic trip and awesome footage, thx Dan 🤙✊🏻💨

How can I take advantage of riding the trails near Tulsa Oklahoma? Thank you!
Made it :) Thanks for the info, I'm still too new for this route but something to develop towards.

can't wait to get down there once my kid gets a bit more dirt time. Thanks for posting!
Thank you for this video 💪
Lol - not as easy as the Raboconda marketing material would have you believe. Still - a lot cheaper than having to pay my dealer. Appreciate the video!
Made it! I just subscribed to your channel. Great info and awesome video.🍻 cheers from South Florida
This seems very tail heavy. I think I would get some of the weight up front in a couple of crash bar bags.
You're in very good hands with Bill and Dusty. Both are great riders/instructors and quality individuals. Hope you had a great tour with them!
Good review! I have the 790R and a Multistrada V2S (same motor as the Desert X). The Ducati is very thirsty if you enjoy the throttle, the KTM is much more frugal even with the same level of aggression. I live in northern California and the 790R is a beast in the twisties, not that the Desert X wouldn't be. Ducati's always handle well. Tires become the weak link before the bikes do. My 790R wears its numerous scars very well. It is not pretty, but it will be the last bike I sell. Cheers
How long took you to do the job
Fellow Oklahomie here, great video - can’t wait to do this BDR!
Awesome... It's a heck of a long ride to get out there, but the route is amazing. Hope you have a great trip.
I’m doing this in late, September. How was your phone reception?I was thinking about getting a Garmin inreach in case I need help?
There are many times when you will have no cell reception. We had an inreach.
I rode the cartwheel section backwards last week. side by sides have plowed the sage on either side of the road about 3/4 the way up. i made it that far and turned around. I was by myself and just didn't feel like it was a good idea to keep going and that climb is no joke.
An argument could be made that cartwheel hill is the hardest part of the entire route, including all of the expert sections. At least it felt that way when we rode it. Trails change year over year, if not month to month... but you are correct, it is no joke.
Awesome video and narration. Super difficult sections, handled very well. I abandoned Go-Pro after having 5. Insta-360 is where it is at. You can always have the right camera angle, without stressing over camera placement.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
I'm jealous! My factory heated grips for the 790R are a total kluge. They work, but look like cheap aftermarket stuff.
Great Stuff! We rode sections 1-3 last week (8/23/2024) and found the road blocked from junction of 7N08, RN25 and forest hwy 8?, (the start of the drop to the Mokelumne river crossing) and had to loop around. Do you recall what route you took there?. I'll probably go back and try from the north side. Doing more sections in a few weeks. Cheers
@@FanOWater Thanks… we were very lucky, in that there were no roadblocks and no workarounds the week we did it. At least not that we were aware of. I believe the following week is when fire and other reroute started happening.

So how did you get past the fallen log starting 57:21?
There was a path to the right, started about 20 feet before the log, wasn't obvious at first, but people had clearly been going around.

What time if the year did you do this ride? Apologize if I missed it. I checked up and down the comments a few times.
Good question! We were on the trail the last few days of June, first few days of July 2024.
Great video! Thank you for sharing. I am thinking of doing this route next year in September with some friends; some of us like to air down for Offroad sections, a couple guys in my group don’t (I guess they compromise and use less pressure than usual for on road but also more pressure than me for off road). What did you guys do with your air pressure since this route goes from off road to on road back and forth ? Thank you.
You'll see a lot of different opinions on this. The air down trade-off is traction, vs protecting your rims and preventing flats. I would guess maybe 2% of the COBDR is steep and loose. (All of the big passes, which don't amount to that many miles compared to the trip). I just set front and rear somewhere around 26 to 28 and leave it... check it every morning and no issues. Really personal preference though. Hope you have a great trip!
Thank you for your response. What you do seems to be the more practical thing to do.
1290 SAR doubles as a chainsaw.
Great video, both lovely bikes. GSX is more raw so gets my vote.
Section 6, while easy, is very scenic and if you've never done it before, you should. For a place to stay, once you pop out on the road in Wyoming, head West to Baggs and stay at the Cowboy Inn. If you want more riding, try the BDR Red Desert X Loop the next day. Be aware there's a very hard 10+mile section of sand going clockwise on that loop. Also, doing any of the high mtn passes in Colorado after lunch can be dicey due to thunder storms. Before you hit Hagerman, if you're following the schedule laid out here, check the weather. A mid sized Adv bike is still 500lbs, IMO, the best bike for the COBDR is something no larger than a KTM 690/701, those weigh less than 350lbs....
Great review of options to consider. Thanks

Couple updates; US 50 from Gunnison to Ridgeway closed at blue mesa res. Due to bridge construction; Bypass is 1-3 hours extra. Also section ‘one’ is no longer smooth and fast due to heavy rains.
