- Transcription of the clarinet and tenor sax solos on Blue and Sentimental by Count Basie, as played by the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble at Essentially Ellington 2022. I just recently heard this recording, and both these solos are incredible. I seriously feel nostalgic about them despite having heard them very few times. I hope you enjoy the video!
Soloists:
Sean McCoy (Clarinet)
Zeb Jewell-Alibhai (Tenor Sax)
Original: • Essentially Ellington ...
Lol that's me on tenor. Pretty sure that's the first time anyone's transcribed me.
Dude, you sound great. I've been playing for 30 years and I'm really impressed with your time, intonation, phrasing, stylistic choices. Keep it up man!
Good job
You sound amazing man. The amount of times I keep replaying this song and having it on loop is just astronomical. I love the sound quality of that saxophone. Just absolutely beautiful. Also, congrats on your awards. That’s insane bro!
yea zeb!
Oh my god that’s so awesome. I’m new to tenor and if I can even mimic a fraction of your skill and talent my life will be complete. Your playing is absolutely immaculate oml
holy moly the tenor nailed it
Thanks! I appreciate it
we found him boys
Absolutely! Totally insane for his age!!
Goosebumps
@@zebjazz what mouthpiece did you use here? You sound so good on it. One of the best highschool solos I’ve ever heard
I too love the fallout series.
Jokes aside, the tone on the clarinet and tenor sax is fucking IMMACULATE
@@austinsmallwood151 all the music you can play on the in game radio is 20-40s music, so very similiar vibe to what is being played here.
I play both the clarinet and saxophone and imo the clarinet here wasnt impressive at all but the tenor sax was absolutely beautiful

damn the clarinet solo was awesome. He was a little embarrassed by the split tone at the end but had no need to be. It gave it character
yeah he laughed but i found it very tasteful. some of the best moments are accidental in music :D (ehh not some, most perhaps)
Great solo, but his tone needs some work.

It's a real pleasure to see all these young people rethinking the music of the 'old' ones. With good taste and sensitivity. The clarinet sounds sometimes like PW Russell in the high notes and the tenor solo is of a very high level. We are on the right track with this new generation who not only know the 'tradition' but are also able and aware to bring new things.
Congratulations to all of you.😀
The old ones are the ones who had a pragmatic approach to music. Whenever I learn their music, I feel as if I gain better context on how music works as a whole.
Rethinking? No. They're custodians dusting off museum pieces. But they're really good at dusting off.
we’re just trying to keep it alive man
I have hope in gen z. Us millennials are morons. Remember to vote conservative.
@@LoquaciousLemonade cool
Holy shit this guy listens to Johnny Hodges, and you can tell in more ways than just the bending.
And Ben Webster
Less Is more. Either long bend a part of a phrase or short bends across phrases. Too much of both leads to unbalanced melody. Melody is key when playing lines like this.
It's funny I actually don't listen to much Hodges at all. The main inspiration for this solo was Herschel Evans. I've checked out a lot of Ben Webster in the past, but if I'm honest not much Hodges!
@@zebjazz i enjoy listening to you play
@@zebjazz that’s interesting. I hear a lot of his all of me solo in this recording especially.
I’m a guitarist but man do I love the saxophone.
sax is a great thing
Why not do both?
@@spinach6122 I would probably pass out. I dont have the lungs.
@@dananthony6258 Saxophone is actually more of a laid back and easy going instrument, its more so about the quality of the air than the quantity, if you ever feel like passing out while playing you are probably doing it wrong. You should give it a try! Its definitely not easy, im in college and my air control definitely still needs some work, but your lungs shouldn’t be a problem if you’re interested in learning it
@@claytongreenlee7808 how much are they normally
Tenor has been doing his Johnny Hodges homework! Those bends are smooth as butter
in a reply above the tenor says who influenced him more
and some Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young bits here and there
that clarinet dude was at my all state clinic in may! he was the first chair alto sax and his tone was absolutely amazing

That is a PHAT gorgeous tenor sound oh my!!!
Thanks man!

It's a great solo, but his tone is really bad.

I just don't like his tone. Sorry.

Ah just thinking about the video back then… times were simpler
This is beautiful to me. I don't feel it like nostalgic, I only feel a soft sense of love and cuteness between a special person.

whoooo, i love the clarinet player. wicked tone, i hope i have the opportunity to play jazz clarinet this year in high school. we did a late 40s style musical and i was playing for the pit, it was my first real exposure to playing jazz, it was the most fun ive ever had playing clarinet easily.
Tenor sounds straight out of the Harry James band. Killed it!
What is tenor?

That blew my mind! Wow, I haven't heard such smooth playing in years. Beautiful.
a lot of people have mentioned that she seems to be enjoying the music and im convinced that’s why it sounds so beautiful
That was impressive! It was really cool. I played tenor sax in high school. When I graduated, I left it behind. I always kind of regretted it. After what seems like 100 years, I started to learn the soprano sax. It's amazing what comes back to you after a long lapse of time. I fotgot how much fun it was.
If anybody wants to listen to the original version this is based on, it’s the Count Basie orchestra recording in 1938 of “Blue and Sentimental” with Herschel Evans on tenor and Lester Young playing a rare clarinet solo.
Marvelous performance...also trumbone guy in the back 0:16 I hope your life is filled with beautiful nasty feelings and events as much as you enjoyed at that moment
I forgot where I heard this, but it’s very rare to hear a “Smoky Tenor”. And my God this Kid knocked it outta the park. Got the right slurs of bright notes down lock-and-key! Brilliantly done, and well executed.

I’m a proud alum of this group. Gotta give it up for the director Dr. Gregg Gelb
This is fire ... Wow I really hope generations continue to give jazz it's deserved place!
As a fellow tenor saxist, this dude gives me chills. He’s so good at playing his solo.
0:50 It's Linguini from Ratatouille!
The amount of times I've watched this video... I've memorized how to play the solo on my clarinet and tenor sax lol. I'm constantly playing it during my band period and I CAN'T STOP! It's so good
You wouldn’t believe how incredible it was live.
If you’d have told those old jazz greats that these kids would be playing their music like this in 2022, they’d never have believed you.
Every cell in my body wept with sheer joy hearing such EXCELLENCE and knowing the love of such beautiful music didn’t end with the previous generations 🙏🏻
im literally in tears this is so pretty 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I think I just listened to the tenor solo like 7 times. Those were some SEXY licks
life is worth living because i got to listen to this guys' solos
May not be perfection (which is sometimes overrated), but they are feeling the music (which is sometimes underrated) - Behind these guys is a good teacher.
Its jazz, if youre playing it "perfect" youre doing it wrong
Dr. Gregg Gelb, the best
That music just hits hard. the swings and the tone are ABSOLUTLY INCREDIBLE!

Night is dark, so is my heart. Whisky ain't making things better..
Really new to jazz and tenor (played alto before) and I have a goal now: IF I CAN MIMIC EVEN A FRACTION OF HIS POWER MY LIFE WILL BE COMPLETE.
I knew so many kids like these that were incredible and then dropped playing after high school for one reason or another, and it's heartbreaking.
I really wish schools put more into music programs. I got lucky, but a lot don't.
I really adore this kind of music, I think it's above any other kind of music
That tenor sax dude is awesome. Well done !
0:14 I've heard many clarinet players hit that high note, but this is the first time it was intentional. Very well done.
Fun fact that tenor also plays trumpet and won an award for doubling
Indeed I did

Oh jeez the tenor was absolutely beautiful AND THE CLARINET??? I can’t get over how great the two sounded, and that split tone for the clarinet definitely made it better don’t care what anyone says 🙏
How nostalgic can you play?
Tenor sax: YES
Dead meme.
That was SAWEET! Both soloists were fantastic, the tenor had fantastic tone. I've always loved a smooth smokey tenor sax, this one had it all over the place.
Beautiful sound on the tenor sax. For some reason, very few sax players seem to be able to get a great tone like that today.
The clip just got better and better 😂 superb musicians and heck audience too, their applause was timed beautifully.
it’s always the DULL ass sax that lays down the butteriest tone
That dude at the end was incredible. That little piano dingus at 0:25 was even better. It was in odd time too! 🤣😫🥹
I just melt watching these. So young and talented, my goodness.
As someone who plays both the clarinet AND tenor sax (though not professionally) I am very impressed and extremely intimidated by these guys' skill
God damn playing so relaxed his spine could fall out.
Yo that was so good
That’s authentic asf. Wow, excellent craftsmanship all of you!!
The clarinet player is a doctor now, Dr. McCoy
WOW THAT TENOR!!
This is what makes me want to play my clarinet again so goddamn badly. I WANT TO PLAY JAZZ AGAIN MAN
im in the jazz band at my school lol
btw i love ur pfp
Thanks hehe
I love music that you can absolutely feel, something that just makes you want to move and shake to the rhythm. I can’t explain the amount of times I replayed this, it was AMAZING.
Excellent playing.
It's been 2 months since I've seen this and I tried to replicate the tone the tenor makes but never could. I did not know why until I was given a low Bb in piano in marching and I was stumbling 2 days before I had to play it to find a way to play that low and soft. I ended up having to play a mid Bb and it didn't matter much but I did learn subtones. Subtones, to my understanding, is a technique to have more air than reed vibration and it's how the tenor sounds so fluffy. You're welcome
As a violinist, I envy the sound of a good jazz piece
As a saxophonist, I envy the sound of a great orchestra. Absolutely criminal that saxophones have been introduced into the majority if orchestras around the world
Violinists have just as much a space in jazz as clarinets. Don't be afraid to seek a place to bring your own beautiful solo to people
To be so good, so young!
The girl at 1:26: "It was at that moment I knew I would marry him"
Satchmo, Duke Jelly Roll and all them guys dapin each other up in the great beyond!
I pooed my pants in nostalgia
man ever since ive found this video i cant help it but rewatch it everytime i open youtube
1:01 this part sounds like it's straight out of "Everywhere at the end of time"
this guys tone is something else
I wonder if this piece would induce nostalgia/melancholy in someone who never before knew of anything related to european/american culture, like a monk in tibet or maybe congolese tribesmen. Is it something intrinsic in the music that makes us interpret it this way or is it just our own life experiences?
This kinda just sounds gay to me
I LOVE seeing young people playing this music.
That tenor, I want to be able to produce that sound
Genetic is a b*tch my friend.
I really like the changes in texture throughout the piece
Maravillosa interpretación, felicitaciones!!!
Imma steal that pentatonic lick on the last bar
this sounds like it’s straight from the credits scene of a Pixar movie
DAMNNNN, that sax is friggin stunning.
and then the saxophone man quit the saxophone to work as a chef, and to be controlled by a rat.
Feels like I’m 10 years old sitting at an Olive Garden waiting for my breadsticks and salad. Mom and dad are arguing about what color the sky is. Life is good.
The ending of the clarinet solo is so tasty, it's like "well that's all for today guys, but I got more"
oh how i'd love to learn to play jazz music.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the cultural achievements of the Jazz Age
Oh my god that was beautiful. My guys out here killing it.
The tenor sax isnt really good, its his pet rat thats making him play like that.
If he don't got a hat on then what hairs are the rat pulling to get him to move 😂
There are two places and both are really bad 💀
