Francie is a terrific broadcaster.
Hiring Francie to revive the podcast channel was a great decision. So much content and a stand in for Kyle to bounce off of.
"you get the full experience, you roll up to a dead charger" 😅😅
At least they are keeping it real, neither the one at the show nor out in the wild is working 😂
@@stefangabler3469 it was a quoted comment from Kyle that's what the laughing emoji is for
I thought I would fast forward some of this video but I'm watching all of it. The dynamic between Kyles brash and saucy attitude and Francies "PBS News Hour" calm voice is really entertaining.
We wonder if Kyle’s mom yells at him for that.
PBS News hour voice, lol!
Francie's interviewer experience shows: she's thoughtful and has really pertinent questions and follow ups. Every time Kyle's being an ass, she asks him to "explain" himself. It makes Kyle look like the entitled guy that he is, riding the TH-cam wave to buy nice toys and dismiss everyone who does not agree with him.
@@jocelyndeguise You're totally on point. I like some of the content on this channel, but this guy's demeaning and elitist attitude is a major turn off. I'd like to see more stuff from her and less from him.
Francie is a natural interviewer. She carries her self so well. She seems to have tons of potential whether on Out of Spec Podcasts or another career all together.
Francie is so much less intense than Kyle. When Kyle says certain things you can see that she is thinking why are you saying that.
Dude just dumped on all Android users. Does he not realize how anti consumer Apple is?
Kyle has a know it all asshole mentality. Francie makes this podcast tolerable and if it wasn't for her I would never watch this channel.
@@paulbram2 Totally ! The guy has no filters. That can sometimes be an asset, but the Starbucks drinking Apple fanboy that he is just pissed off 70% of the global cell phone market. He's getting more and more arrogant, and showing bias is not a very good idea.
The guy's a dick, plain and simple.
What ever happened to Henry Ford s the Old Man???? An Affordable car for everyone. These are for FILTHY RICH, Yuppies. Who have more money than they know what to do with it. Businesses, looking at their spread sheets and bottom line . Are not buying These expensive electric trucks. Electric Mustang, A YUPPIE MOBILE.
Francie is great! I love her!
Our kids call her Aunt Francie.
I have nothing to say about the auto show. However , I was very impressed with Francie's performance as Kyle's controller. She seems to have been trained to do interviews and direct a conversation to expand someone else's ideas and flow with the situation she is in. A wonderful balance with Kyle and his helter skelter style.
@ 4:50 Francie is the voice of REASON, PRACTICALLY, and THOUGHTFULNESS for Out Of Spec. That’s why many commenters here praised her. Why would you want to put a heavy battery into a Raptor and handicap its ability to jump ??
So refreshing to have a co-presenter that can keep up with Kyle's high energy level. It makes it much easier to maintain interest in these LOOONG videos.
I'm glad that Francie can be friends with an Android user, I'm one. I've been so ensconced in the Google world and ease that it gives me, I'd have a very hard time transitioning to IOS. That said, I'm friends with all EV drivers despite what phone they may use!
I'm also an Android user and while I don't wear this as a badge of honour, I still think Kyle showed his true "narrow thinking" colours by saying what he said. What a douche that guy can be when he just spews that kind of garbage.
Kyle misinformed eveyone when he said that the Ioniq 5 wasn't worth reccomending since it' on board route guidance software was so bad. Obviously he wasn't aware of the oct 23 update which vastly improved the software to the point where it is actually good and reliable to use. I monitor the SOC predictions and they are right on. So, I have complete confidence in their software. I don't think that Kyle ever did a review of their software after the Oct update. He's judging the original which was bad, or incomplete.
As an Ioniq 5 owner, i would agree it's worth taking a look at the revised software at this point. It's definitely improved however, i'd still say there's more room for improvement.
He tries to come off as simply being honest occasionally trying to praise others but when comparisons come up he's a Tesla shill for sure
I just want to add to what I said, cause even I have the long learned habit of using Android Auto / CarPlay for nav so admittedly my experience with rhe on board nav is limited. That being said, I took a 1000 mile trip over the weekend using nothing but the on board nav and the route planning was perfectly fine. It took me to all the EA chargers I'd have used on that route anyway. The one exception was when I wanted to use a charger near my destination after having been there for a day that had just opened a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't in the nav system yet so I couldn't pre condition on the way there. They really need to add a manual pre condition mode.
Francie is a great counterweight to Kyle’s caffeine addled no filter talking machine
Francid comes across fantastic!!! Good job!!! Hopefully a bigger roll in the future.
I never seen a show floor so bare and lacking in cars
Well, I've been to the Montreal auto show and it was the same. I think that's where auto shows are going.
This had to have been a pre-opening filming or something. Crazy that there was nobody there.
Everytime I hear about Toyota hedging their bets and going slow on electric I think about Nokia / Blackberry taking it slow with going into smartphones / touchscreens.
Different product and lifespan.
At least in the USA, the Average person keep a car 10-12 years.. a phone 2-4 years..
Toyota has plenty of time to get something done, and they have the manufacturing capability to build them in large quantity once they decide to do it.
I think Kyle is right.. they are waiting to see if EV's are what people really want long term. There is plenty of good reasons to NOT buy an EV.. especially if you just don't like Tesla's. They have a pretty boring interior.. and some things that put people off.. Weird door handles, now no turn signal stalks and shift lever.. lack of buttons.
@@kens97sto171 Different lifespan but also different timescales to gather the necessary know-how and start production.
There's also more and more options beside Telsa on the market. You can get plenty of EV's that look and feel exactly like an ICE.
Replace Toyota with Nokia in your text and Tesla with Apple and read it again with an open mind.
We're way beyond a temporary fad with EV's, change is coming whether we like or not :)
I also 100% agree that EV's aren't for everyone and there's a lot of use cases where ICE is king and will be for a while. On the other hand, horses still have their use 100 years after the automobile came out :)
@@wtfgogu
I think you're underestimating Toyota. You actually think that they're not working on this behind the scenes? Think that's your miscalculation.
Also Toyota has a lot more financial resources than GM or other domestic automakers. Primarily because they have a lot less debt than the others. And are in much better financial shape. They also have a much wider global reach.
By the way I drive an EV for my work car.. 800-1100 miles per week.
I consider myself to be pretty open-minded. But I'm also very much into the car industry and have followed it for decades.
Then all over the news lately about the slowing of EV sales and more and more questions about whether or not it's the future. Or at least the future for everyone. Even Kyle mentioned in this video. The Toyota strategy could be the correct one.
Tesla has been added for almost a decade. But really the last 5 years were there significant sales volume. And they're still selling about 2 million cars per year. That's very impressive considering where they came from. Toyota sells 10 million cars per year globally. So Tesla would need to add at least five or six more new factories to equal Toyotas manufacturing capability.
And the entire time Toyota would have to sit back and do absolutely nothing...
I think there's far more risk with GM and some of the other manufacturers.. They don't have the financial capability to front the money necessary to catch up with Tesla. At least not in the short term. And we don't know how long they might have until it's too late.
I think Tesla's biggest problem though is similar to Apple. Certainly a lot of people like them. But about half the population doesn't and will never. Their interiors are pretty boring the exterior is somewhat boring. And they lack a lot of features even some basic cars have.
And I don't think doing things like removing the turn signal lever and shifter stalks going to help bring in first time EV buyers. They're likely to get in that new Tesla and find it way too different and boring.
You get in a Chevy bolt EV and it's pretty much like any other car people have driven.
The other thing is just your numbers of models. Tesla really only has two mass market models. Toyota has dozens to fit different marketplaces and the needs of the people that live there. For many people a Toyota Corolla would be an absolute luxury car. And they drive very simple basic vehicles.
please understand I'm not against EVs at all I own one and I enjoy it very much. But with my job, I speak to dozens of people everyday. Often the EV topic comes up when they notice I'm driving one. Leads to some pretty interesting conversations.
By the way one interesting thing about the bolt EV is that I would say maybe only one person every day even notices that it's an electric car. Personally I see that as an advantage.
I've owned a Tesla M3 dual motor for 2 years and love it. I watched this video with casual interest, and was very impressed with Francie's thoughtful and genuine comments and demeanor. There was no sense of self-awareness or pretense. Great job by both Kyle and Francie.
PHEVs have been proven in Europe to be just as bad for the environment. Logically it's crazy to put two engines in a car.
Nobody is buying those cars care for the environment, I know I don't 🤷♂️
@@naughtysauce4323 They buy them for possible fuel savings and to avoid going to the gas station. But either way, the ICE engine will kick in with every acceleration, to recharge the battery when it is too low or for the maintenance that has been programmed to do.
Hi, I’m from Belgium and if you buy a Phev it’s a great tax write off. It’s the only reason companies buy them
One gallon of gas in my emissions controlled generator puts 101 mile in the EV6. Do the math.
This actually 100 percent untrue!
Kyle pushing Francies buttons by being a typical indulgent overconsuming american is hilarious
Francie is terrific. I would have her try this tour on her own next time.
What's up with Kyle's grumpy attitude lately
Lately ? The guy's always been like that. We just notice it more and more. But he'll dismiss every negative comment, as expected.
I cringe every time Kyle says the Ioniq 5 does not have proper trip planning. The current version of software not only populates chargers as needed, but adds or subtracts them dynamically as energy needs change. it tells you your state of charge when you arrive at a charger, how long you need to charge to get to the next one. The car gives you real time information about the next charging stop. Things like how many chargers are there, and how many are currently occupied. It also tells you how long since the last car unplugged. There have been 2 back to back over the air updates. The only complaint that you could have about this car is that it’s not like a Tesla.
Do you mean a stripped down poorly painted, poor body fitting over priced auto?
I was starting to watch a lot less Out of Spec before Francie came onboard. She's giving a pretty good boost to the content.
A cool casual walk through of the Chicago Auto show. The commentary was precise, well informed, and impartial as per usual.
I have not been to the Chicago auto show in years but, when I used to go the floor was packed with cars. Now it looks like there is so much space between cars. Does anyone remember past shows? Is my memory wrong?
It was slammed when i went there as a kid. This had to have been a pre-opening press access tour or something. Not sure but there's no way this is the full crowd for the auto show.
LOL 37:00 the conversation in the VW ID buzz. Kyle says we’re not talking about you Francie😂
Kyle says you can’t buy a gm ev and the bolt is still on lots in my area. He never thinks before he talks. Francie for the win
Thanks for the tour. I appreciate the review of what is currently available (EV) all in one podcast.
Trains are the original EVs/Hybrids 😆 Wish they were actually an option on the west coast.
Also good points about auto journalists not knowing enough about EVs! Along with journalists ignoring Tesla because of personal bias and missing the fact the Model Y was the best selling car (electric or not) in the world last year. Whether you like Tesla or not for whatever reasons, you're doing a disservice to yourself when its clearly leading in the market (EV or not once again).
Earth cruiser! Representing Bend, Oregon! Admittedly I think their Hummer EV is one of their less cool builds, but need more EVs in the space for sure.
The media gets a couple days before the crowds. People might think this is the public event.
If you don't put models out it is hard to learn. Not sure there is any brand where the first model they put out was a hit - you just have to learn how to do EV well so if you don't start you don't get there when the mass market arrives. Getting a bunch of mediocre first EVs is unfortunately part of the growing pains to get good ones.
The Chicago Auto Show used to be the largest in the country with three rooms this size full of cars but not anymore. The show in the past was known for its Concept & Production Car introductions, but in the last 10 years or so that's not been the case anymore.
Indeed an interesting Duo, naturally we expect Kyle to throw all of his excessive knowledge at Francie. Good job to Francie for holding her own!
Talk about the full effect of charging. I pulled up to an Electrify America charging station in my Leaf on turtle mode and the only Chademo station they had was unavailable. Had the car towed to a dealer that had a charging station that charged the battery in half the time of any station I have ever used.
The Leaf is a 2014 S with a fast charging port. At 10 years old and with more than 125,000 miles the battery has degraded 25 percent. The battery has been heated to 125°F and been frozen to 15°F. It still gets me from point A to B.
It's good to hear there is going to be an adapter for Chademo, because it's not just the Leaf that has Chademo.
Instead of two contestants as in video tape players we have three in the plug in race. National Access Contest Superiority, NACS. The defense rests.
Thanks for the preview! Headed to the show on Saturday. I agree with Francie: ID Buzz/67 Bus was the highlight of the show.
I'm glad we've reached a point where 180 hp is deemed not enough for an economy car.
Was Kyle hangry?
Definitely his State of Stomach was below 10%
Out of pink drank 😂
When is he not ?
I've always kind of hated Toyota, and their approach to battery electric ensures my opinion won't be changing anytime soon. BTW, nice burn on EVgo.
We had a VW Vanigon years ago. I loved it but the dealer in Houston was abismal. We got rid of it and got a Carivan to replace it. I still loved the VW van, but an EV version of our old VW Van would be fantastic. We used it for our family both around town and cross country.
Dude, a little less caffeine, ha ha. Thanks for showing us around and all the great info.
Francie, I take the Amtrak also typically from Greensboro, North Carolina to DC and Philadelphia. I like it.
Would love a podcast about different OEM's approach to electrification! Comparing Ford, GM, and Toyota would be interesting!
that new kona having airplay instantly makes it better than a model Y
Cool car show walk through vid. Thx for the content.
At 16:40, the man was on the floor worshipping the vehicle. 😂
Glizzy definitely means something else 😅😂😂
You two complement each other, wide angle custom feel to Kyle's impressive run down. Appreciate the opinions and off the cuff remarks. Never seen you do more than 1 car a a time, so the car shows in this format should be added as a staple. Even if the same cars, can still update and evaluate in diff setting.
Thanks for enduring this for us.
I really loved listening to y'alls commentary on the state of affairs with each auto makers approach to electrification.
Thank you for the show
Kyle, Why do some "bad ev's" only allow one rapid charge daily and it "locks down"?
Kyle, i have some nerdy answers about the size of the show For ya. Square footage wise, it is (or was) the largest auto show in North America. That floor alone is 840,000sqft. That said, it has nowhere near the booths or as big as previous shows in the past. In the past, Chrysler booth alone was 1/3 of the floor (that whole back section).Halls B1-B2 (north building )used to have booths as well. That was an additional 400,000+sqft of booth space. They also used to use the grand ballroom for certain auto unveilings and the rooms up on 4th and 5th floors for dealer lounges and such. Based on seeing certain doors not open though, it looks like they cheaped out on that as well and didnt do them. I think as a car enthusiast you really would have enjoyed the show back in its hayday.
Suggestion for future OOS videos: interrupt Francie less, people want to hear her more
My thoughts exactly.
He's playing the "veteran", but shows no serious broadcast experience...
Great video. It would be interesting to know why the Cadillac Lyriq is being sold and delivered while the Chev Blazer sales are on hold considering they are both on the same platform.
I enjoy watching Francie, she’s the reason I watch this channel. Kyle is a little too aggressive to me.
Personally, I have nothing against being "edgy", but Kyle's arguments are very often based on what he likes instead of facts. So when he gets angry because something is not made "the way he wants", he just comes off as a narrow minded entitled ranting douche.
Volvo isn't at these shows? Good to know, but I'm itching to see a full US-spec EX30.
Volvo stopped coming in 2019. They used to show off their PHEV too!
I wonder if you want to see full spec or “it works and doesn’t have software issues out of the factory “
Just a US Owners manual would answer the level of questions in my mind.
One example - appears not to have HomeLink. I appreciate that it was value engineered six ways to Sunday and I can buy a clip-on transmitter but the charger will be in the garage & it seems high value to build in a way to commend the garage door up without having to buy an accessory.
You’d think with all these station wagon looking BEV SUVs out there Subaru would jump at the opportunity to electrify the Outback. It would sell like hot cakes.
3:44 - JOE RAITI AND LORI...!!!🤙 speaking of Cadillac, i was looking at both new and used electric Lyriqs at a nearby dealer and 2 of the Salesmen i spoke to didn't know about the GM "Stop Sale" related to the Blazer EV (or at least they "feigned" not knowing).
26:50 - GUILTY AS CHARGED...!!! finally just got an IO6 AWD loaner last week and both me and my Samsung Fold 4 were duly impressed (although i do use both Mac and PC in my home office).
I think Kyle is incorrect about Toyota. Toyota is not dong anything new with the Prius. Toyota has been doing the same thing for over 30years with hybrid, they will not improve because they don’t want to go battery electric. BEVs will only improve with mass adoption, exactly the same way that ICE did, they evolved over the decades.
@ 1 : 08 : 36 FRANCIE we have so much in common 😀
My favorite thing was the end lol jp. Thanks for sharing and doing what you could.
When talking about full send into EV make sure you call out Volvo. They are planning to be full EV by the end of the decade. That’s a pretty impressive goal.
Toyota making a poor EV in the BZ4X to prove to themselves that customers don't want EV's yet is hardly evidence that hybrids is the way forward.... There are a lot of mostly uninformed anxiety about EV range and charging and some of it is fair based on the mostly legacy auto half hearted attempts to introduce ineffective EVs using unreliable charging infrastructure. But state of the art EVs like Tesla and more brands coming on strong together with reliable supercharging network will work great for most users. Only significant exception is people that need to tow often above 100miles. There a plug in Hybrid appears to be the best answer for a long time
EVs are still half baked (battery chemistries and charging infrastructure) and are high priced for the majority of the population. Hybrids are affordable and accessible. There are not enough EVs compared to Hybrids by volume to make a dent in climate change. EVs only satisfied 0.86% of the US population who can afford it. EVs are hardly a player to lower emissions. A majority of EVs are essentially play toys for the rich or status symbols. Thinking about it now, hybrids probably get driven more than EVs in terms of miles just by the fact the majority of EVs are owned by the rich. I see a lot of taxi owners who drive hybrids not EVs.
Geez, Kyle. Got a few gripes about Chicago?
As someone who has lived in Chicago for 30 years, I wonder where he gets his negative opinion of our city. My guess is Foxnews. Chicago is a great city. If you only visit in February, however, you might not see it.
@@keithv3767Agreed. He just seems like he would rather be somewhere else. As for the show, once upon a time, it was one of the best in the world. Not only square footage, but new product introductions and prototypes displayed. In recent years, manufacturers have cut back commensurate with their budgets. Stellantis, for example, dropped out completely this year. If Mr. Grumpypants is going to be cranky about doing an auto show, in Chicago, save us and stay home.
Unfiltered, as always. Maybe not the best way to win fans.
What was the 1st electric car?
The first electric car was the 1888 Flocken Elektrowagen, a four-wheeled open carriage with a 1-horsepower electric motor, a rechargeable lead-acid battery and a top speed of 9 mph.8 Aug 2023
Great video! Can't wait to share more on the new Kona EV soon! @23:08 Hyundai says they bumped up DCFC speeds but I'll have to test it out myself.
Kona has become more of an E-Niro now
26:00I LOL. I'm an Ioniq 6 mom (owner) and a Samsung phone user.
Great job with your coverage. Far be it from me to defend GM and the release of the Blazer has been a rolling dumpster fire but I think the problems happened early enough that it will end up being a hiccup that people won’t be worried about in a couple of years. I think their EVs are actually really good and will be attractive to regular people that don’t watch videos about EVs.
We love you Kyle and your road trips videos but I think you focus too much on charging speed. I don’t think regular people are going to care if they are charging at 150 kw vs 250 kw. Maybe people disagree. I don’t take my EV on road trips and charge it 99% at home so I don’t really know. It just seems like you get the peak charging rate for such a short time, it doesn’t really matter all that much in terms of time. To me efficiency is more important so you are adding more actual miles per kWh. I also think people care about charger reliability. People will wait an extra 10 minutes at a charger but the charger actually has to work when they arrive.
Kyle you never disappoint the Chicago autoshow is the biggest in hot dogs, you make me pee myself ever time I watch your podcasts you come out with something funny, thank you ,you make my day ever time.
Have they added true OTA to the Ioniq 6. I was between a Model 3+ and an Ioniq 6, but the 6 has so many software TSBs that require a trip to the dealer. Who wants to go to the dealer for a software update.
Refreshed Model 3. Test drove a LR which is new as most showrooms appear to be getting SR models. It was quiet, but the road noise was there. Little to no wind noise which is the result of the glass being thicker. I think tire noise is because they are using Hankook tires instead of a better tire. Also the radio at first was not great even after tuning. It wasn't until I connected my Spotify account and listened to a good source before I was blown away. Makes the system in MYLR sound pretty bad in comparison. Now I need to hear a SR degraded system.
Great context you guys have developed.
Great presentation gang, G
The highlander p s kindness is always free😊
Would be nice to know who has decent software besides in their EV. Maybe an excel sheet.
When are you guys going to do an episode on Aptera? The CEOs are always available for interviews. BTW: I love the content. Keep it up! 😎👍❤️
You guys did great!!!
I remember the Cook County Police from the movie "Blues Brothers". 🙂
I've been attending that show since 2012 and it's never been the same since covid. Their claim at being the biggest used to be true. It used to use both halves of the exhibit hall at McCormick in full but now it seems like every year another automaker pulls out or further limits their footprint at the show. This was the first year I didn't go.
3:30 Is the phone in the back pocket a good idea? High risk of theft?
Aryia it's nice but is expensive.
agreed I got to barrow one and show it for 2023 Earth month 🌎🫶
Japan did well with Nissan leaf in 2009
There's more than 1 floor, guys. Not just the "four walls".😂
@38:57 I love my ariya, and I hope they bring the nismo version to the states.
29:30 It’s my understanding the 2024+ GM Ultium EVs will be fully OTA updatable, just like a Tesla. The reason for the problems now is implementing the brand new full-vehicle Ultifi OS that will allow it. We saw it a bit in the 24+ LYRIQs and the OTA “Velocity Upgrade”. That ability is paused until the software is sorted.
Interesting thing to know about that. The Chevy Bolt actually has over air updates. It's just Chevy don't update a lot and when it does update you can actually drive the car so most people don't actually notice it.
If Toyota made a really great EV and priced it well then their customers might start desiring an EV and hold on to their current cars and wait.
It's not really in their interest to sell an EV now when they've got a really good hybrid business. It doesn't mean they aren't putting a lot of effort behind the scenes on electric. I don't think they are a stupid company.
1:57 what's going to happen to that HUBE screen in the sun or do they think and put charging under ground... just an idea 🤔
3:16 i've heard ford is going broke. any other way back that up?
The problem with the ford evs is that they are still struggling with basic stuff like the HVJB on the mach e is still having problems even after the fix, the lightning had battery issues. I love the look of them and the software is bearable but I don't want to be worried about core components randomly failing
Can't wait for the Explorer in Europe!
@43:30 Raitis rides zonking the Escalade IQ.
Would like to see more of the electric Ford Explorer with the new MEB tech (bought VW platform) and being just a bit shorter than ID.4.
@37:02 Oh no I don’t envision kids! Especially in this super expensive EV world they are building.
😂😂😂
The GTD is a homologation vehicle for endurance racing.
Very frustrated with GM. I have a GMC Hummer on order, but I really want a Sierra EV. The issues that they are having is really disappointing. I have very little to no interest in a Ford or RAM.
What's weirdest is the Chevy Bolt did very well and it supports over the air updates.
Hey let's go to subaru..... why?...? To see the puppys!!!!!!
1:08:31 ahem, that was a pretty crass stereotype and probably awkward for Francie.
With CCS adapter for the Nissan Leaf coming to USA, does anybody know at Out of Spec when will EVS Enhanced have the Thermal Management System (TMS) Battery be available in the USA? This would be the final solution to the inadequacies of the Nissan Leaf.
I like and respect the Tesla brand but Elon takes some of those positive points away. But not a fan of the Cybertruck!
Wow. My money has been on Mazda to be the first Japanese automaker to go under in the EV transition for some time (Mitsubishi doesn't count as they're already basically there). I finally heard someone who agreed.
Cmon car companies, where is the EV available to the “common folk”, in terms of affordability?
Beyond Tesla Model 3, the prices are way too high for many EVs.
Agree with Kyle on the Model 3
The Buzz and the ID.7 should be a good seller HURRY UP 😂
