A Dramatic Moment as Khanyisa Screams and the Elephants Come Running

  • Captured on the Carer Cam! 🎥
After spending time with Mambo, playing in and stirring up the sand for a shower, Khanyisa finds herself alone in the wilderness. Mambo and Khanyisa often spend time together since Mambo’s mother Lundi is Khanyisa’s adoptive mother in her new herd.
But Mambo has a short attention span and likes to keep moving, while Khanyisa enjoys more breaks to fully immerse in her environment as she learns more and more about being an elephant 🐘
Lundi often follows Mambo when he heads off but Lundi was nowhere to be seen. After standing along for longer than she is used to, even though our carers were close by, Khanyisa screams a call to the herd. And the elephants come running.
Limpopo is the first to the rescue with Lundi and Jabulani a close second, followed by Kumbura, Timisa and Pisa! The elephants trumpet 🎺 in response as they rally around the calf to protect her and ensure there is no threat, such as lion or hyena, or opportunistic hunters.
It’s an intense sound and certainly rattling but calm is quickly restored as the herd surround Khanyisa in a circle of safety. Tokwe joins too, as well as Bubi and Somopane, but Setombe and Zindoga engage in some sideline sparring.

To be honest, I thought this was a real milestone. The videographer was in plain sight, however, Khanyisa reached out to her herd instead of a human. That’s pretty awesome and a good sign for her spirit, self-awareness, and herd mentality.

in the order of Protection, Humans are outsiders--other elephants count most, to Esp. a baby elephant. And they to her. We saw this in the firs meeting of K with the herd out in the bush. The three large females charged the video person and the other elephants formed a circle around K. That first meeting was first--Excluding humans first(For whatever reason) and second, Greeting a new herd member. The Herd is the Essential family unit--not the Human care people, who also do many necessary things to help this Herd function properly.

Khanyisa is a real part of that herd. When she found herself without any of her elephant family there (human family was close by filming) she let out a distress call that every herd knows: baby in trouble! (Baby elephants are much like baby humans: if they find themselves suddenly alone it can cause anxiety. That is one of the reasons Khanyisa has Lammie, Nunga, and a human carer at night. She would get very upset if she found herself alone!) And this herd came running! All the cows and juveniles were especially attentive. If any of the cows had let out a distress call then the bulls would have joined in. A few came after the fact to led some support, but several (including Mambo) just went about their business. And that's because a wild herd is comprised of cows, their offspring, and subadults. Females stay with the herd for life; males will disperse when they reach sexual maturity. So, it really isn't Mambo's fault, as it isn't really his job to play nanny. Younger females without offspring frequently play that role, rehearsing for the time they will have their own babies.
I'm fascinated and impressed by the cohesion in this group. Many are unrelated yet form a bond just as strong as any herd of elephants.
Bless everyone involved for their undying devotion and love, for without them this herd would not be.

Katherine, thank you, wonderful comment. Yes, elephants are amazing and hugely (pun intended) caring animal. Makes my heart melt. But the sound of Khanyisa screaming in fear was bone chilling and very loud. Other than finding herself alone I wonder what else might cause her to scream like that. How is the herd protected from dangerous wildlife? What amazing footage.

Mambo is the herd's "Bad Boy". He is always getting onto trouble. I remember reading that the last time he ran after the wild elephants and was lost for three days when he returned, his mother slapped him with her trunk. It is a shame that was not caught on video. As far as this situation, I wonder if Khanysia got scared because she remembers how she was left behind by her first herd. Poor baby, she panicked for a moment. Glad to see the herd taking up the call and surrounding her with their love and protection. 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘

Baby elephants need to be protected by larger elephants at all times- this is the wild. Predators like lions, hyenas and hippos will surround, attack (kill and eat!) baby elephants left to themselves. There are lions and hippos on this wildlife preserve, not sure about hyenas. This is not a "cried wolf" moment. It is deep instinct for survival. Small animals including baby elephants are very vulnerable to predators like lions, and the babies are usually not left alone, always protected by and with their mother. In this case, adopted mother/allomothers/herd. This is a wildlife preserve- there are lions and other animals who would pose a threat to a small elephant all alone. And the carers too; this herd protects the carers too.

I couldn’t believe how loud the sound that came from Khanyisa was, it was lovely watching the herd come to her ‘rescue’. 🐘🐘🐘 💕💕

Their love for her is matchless. It was incredible how quickly they came to her aid and all the while big brother Mambo was on his little hill, doing his Mambo thing. I bet Lundi had some words for him later about neglecting his babysitting duty.

Mambo è un ragazzino… deve maturare, è ancora inconsapevole .
