- All of our hearts at HERD, Jabulani and HESC have been shattered into a million pieces. It is with incredible heartbreak and disbelief that I share the news of Mopane's sudden and unexpected passing a few days ago

I only found out about HERD right after you took in Khanyisa. It tears at my heart, too, learning about Mopane...gone decades and decades too soon. Whenever I come across a animal killed on the highways, as often as I can I stop and at least get the poor thing off the road so it doesn't get squished into nothingness...and always regardless, I say a little prayer: "You come on up to (my dogs) portion of Rainbow Bridge, everything is going to be all right for you. You will be healed, returned to your peak of youthful vitality, with the assured knowledge of never ever being hurt again, promise!" I also say this for all the wild animals I see, or hear about that have dies or been killed by my own species. I said the same little prayer for Mopane. Little fella you are not gone...merely gone-on before us. We will all see each other again someday, there to again begin our journey together on into Eternity....Love you Mopane!

Beautiful! I, too, started following HERD shortly after they saved Khanyisa. I am in tears, a year after Mopane's passing...such a lively, loving little spirit. And to be taken so quickly with no solutions available to save him. I cannot imagine the devastation to Adine, all the Carers and little Lammie. While never a replacement for Mopane, tiny, mighty Khanyisa and HERD needed each other at a critical time in each one's existence. God brought them together for a reason. I'm 77, and have a life full of "babies" waiting for me at "Rainbow Bridge". I anxiously await our reunion...It shall be so sweet. God bless and protect all creatures great and small, and His faithful sons and daughters who so tenaciously tend to righting man's wrongs.
Yes. Khanyisa brought me to HERD. I didn’t know about little Mopane until today. So sad. Losing any member of your herd, family, community is sad. For some reason it is a bit more pronounced with babies. They have and give so much joy and don’t get to experience much when gone so soon. I’m sorry for the herd and for HERD.

But WHAT HAPPENED? Please try to share what you can. I've loved elephants for many years, and only in the last month's have I learned of HERD, I think first with Khanyisa. When I tell folks my favorite animal is an elephant, I then share that my husband won't let me have one. Of course, I also believe they should be best protected in their native lands. Thank you for what you do for them, and for sharing with us

The video doesn't explain what happened. He looked so very healthy, active, strong. So different from poor abused starved dehydrated Fenya! His life also held such promise.

I too started watching this channel right after Khanyisa was rescued. I didn't know about Mopane until today. It breaks my heart that he didn't survive, but I'm thankful he died among those who loved him, and not at the jaws of lions, hyenas, or a leopard. And because of Mopane the orphanage was built, which benefited Khanyisa, Fenya, and other orphans to come.

I've only just discovered the HERD, I've come in with Fenya's rescue. I've completely fallen in love with the their beautiful Ellies, the people who work so hard and give their all for these beautiful beings. Have just cried so hard at Mopane's dying. So glad he had a good life with the HERD, once he was rescued, he seemed a little sweetie. As for Lammie💖, what a rock for all the fostering she does.
There's no doubt Mopane knew he was loved by all those humans and Elephants who took such great care of him. At least he knew this before his untimely passing that broke our hearts. Rest In Peace, Mopane.
every time I see this I get lost in tears and sorrow. but then I think-was mopane’s spirit reincarnated into khanyisa. I mean when you watch the many films of khanyisa she has such a large and exuberant spirit. even after what she has been thru she has more fight and life than any animal or human. god must be having a good time with mopane and thought him just the perfect elephant for himself and he is swimming in a giant mud pond and eating the freshest dung and with lots of toys and probably some beautiful angels just like all of you that cared for mopane. I love y’all. I may be tense from the day but when I look at these little films the day melts away and I am left with big peace. thank you and yes I have put my money where my heart and love are, I wish I could give more. love love love

He was the catalysr to make sure everything was fit and ready for Khanyisa as her journey is going to be a strong one.
He was a beautiful boy and I can only imagine how it must have brought you all to tears as it has me now. The only way I can come to terms with it is that it was his time......to go back to his Creator.....but watching these captured moments of his life brought such joy amongst the tears and it is patently obvious that he felt loved and that he belonged. Oh my. I teared up watching this video about Mopane the little elephant who did not make it out of childhood. This is such a sad story but you could see that he was loved by his carers and would have become an integral member of the Jabulani herd and equally cared for. This must have been a terrible shock for all of you.

Perhaps that was the reason Lammie never left his side. He knew subconsciously that Mopane was not going to be there for long. Animals know it instinctively.

@@juliemarchese-temple7749 Yes, animals have so much love and compassion for one another. When my older cat was dying of cancer, my two little young cats would sit with him for hours, trying to offer him comfort and solidarity. It was a beautiful sight to watch.

It was a real tearjerker to see what happened to both Mopane and Fenya, may they both RIP. They were both friendly and affectionate. Also, they were both orphan elephants, or orphants. They are both missed

Even after seeing the title of the video and preparing my mind to be brave to watch the end..iam in tears rolling down non stop..such a precious being leaving suddenly is heartbreaking...but you all gave him the best gift of love and care..he would be born again as a baby somewhere and enjoying his childhood with his mom..i pray for him.

interesting..mopane is also the ironwood tree that grows in Southern Africa and has leaves that look like butterflies. I wonder if the herd named him after this tree.

His sweet soul has moved on. Sadly, he probably spent his last hours before dying really suffering physically. I read that he suddenly contracted a deadly virus which hit him very hard very fast. He was fit as a fiddle the previous day, look at the clip of his last full day in this video, he didn't look ill at all. But his last few hours he had collapsed and had blood and foam coming out of his trunk, the virus must've acted like meningitis where it caused a fatal blood hemmorage in the brain.
As seen in the clip, he was healthy as ever during the day the previous day. He probably started feeling like he was hit by the flu that night, kept getting sicker as it got nearer to morning, and I read that for a couple hours early that morning he was collapsed and hemorrhaging. The poor poor little phant. I've heard that certain viruses can hit very suddenly like that. And the vet thought that Mopane probably caught the virus through rodent urine. He probably ran his trunk over it while checking out a strong odd smell while exploring around, bless him.
He's sadly missed, but is in a good place now
Mopane was a beautiful child of God. He is and will remain in the hearst of all of us and the People in the world that love elephants and that cherish the great work done at HERD.

Nothing said or done can make Mopane’s passing any easier, don’t question whether you could have done something different, your gifts of love for Mopane made his short time the best journey any orphan would want, you were his family and friends who thought only of his comfort and happiness, the selfless lot you are, he was already at heaven’s gate he just needed to make the next step. Time will show that his visit was a necessary step in becoming the best home for the babies that will come. Thanks for trusting us enough to share this difficult time for everyone.
😢so very sorry for everyone who gave their all to make a happy life for little Mopane . He appeared to be a happy , healthy, thriving little boy making friends forever. I’ve browsed all the comments and haven’t seen a word about what happened to Mopane. I’m aware from watching Daphne Sheldrick’s video on the difficulties of raising baby elephants that an orphan baby can appear to be well one day and dead the next. That has to be such a heartbreaking situation for the keepers and Adine who obviously sees them as her babies. RIP little Mopane
Someone in the comments said they had read that he caught some virus, probably from rat urine, that quickly and severely affected his lungs and probably caused menengitis, as well. Either of which finally took his life in such a short time. I was reminded of how Jim Henson of the Muppets had caught bacterial pneumonia and died less than 24 hours after being admitted to hospital. God bless them both.

Beautiful footage! So tragic, but it shows that Mopane was loved by all and gave love back during his short time at Herd! Every day he spent at Herd was comfortable, stress free and without cruelty. At least he was in the best hands possible at the time of his passing.

Could it be that the mother sensed there was something wrong with Mopane and that's why he was abandoned? Whatever the case, thank you for caring for him and making his short life so joyous. He knew love and friendship, play and exploration. That is all we can hope for.

@@herdelephantorphanage It is very sad. Elephants are suprisingly sensitive and friendly beings. It's a blessing how kind you have been to the elephants. You've taken great care of them, including the orphan elephants, or as I call them, orphants
The sadness of losing someone close to your heart, a loss so meaningless and so abrupt, without any possible intervention; is so bloody painful. Nothing can replace that loss. But we live with it, somehow. We give it a place in our own history and we somehow live with it. All the miserey, we try to cope with it. And we have the beautiful people like you. Thank you for all you do.

Hadn’t seen this video of Mopane. He came to the HERD not traumatized from HESC, as Fenya was when she came in physically & emotionally hurt from days in a snare & being by herself w/o water or food). He had all the care & love to make it with his human friends, Lammie & the Jabulani herd and have a happy & healthy life! Why life throws at us/them such destinies so early? Mopane now gets to play with Fenya. The sky is brighter since these two beautiful stars were added to light it up.. ♥️♥️🐘🐘🐑

Did you ever find out what has cause that sudden death, very interesting. I would have had an autopsy just as a precaution for the future. 😭
Could have been a congenital problem that might have been hard to detect. I have heard of young children who have collapsed during PE in school and passing away after that because of hidden congenital issues.
It's on their website. I copied and pasted this : "Wildlife Vet, Dr. Peter Rogers, advised from the initial autopsy that it seems likely that Mopane contracted a Virus called Encephalomyocarditis, which may have been passed via traces of rodents urine on some of the dry feed such as lucerne. As we had been experiencing drought, we have had to source extra food from various suppliers, where we suspect the contamination may have originated." The same thing happened to Fenya!

@@AsIseeitPattiDail It sounds like a virus which acts like meningitis, where it can hit you and kill you in under 24 hours, and can kill you via a fatal brain hemmorage, like it did poor Mopane. They usually probably catch the virus more than 24 hours before dying, but with Mopane, the time from his first onset of symptoms to him dying took less than 24 hours. As seen in that video clip, he was healthy as ever the previous day, and early the next morning he's collapsed while blood and foam was coming out of his trunk.

Nice video. Beautiful video. Ending was heart-breaking especially For Lammie who was with him side by side as best friends for life n can feel it how much Lammie could have gone through. Thanks to Khaniysa Elephant restore all. But Reasons not mentioned why Mopane Elephant passed away. Sad all of a sudden he is no more that too after meetings his family. You all did best. Oh wow, such heartbreaking news. Tears have come. I can't imagine how awful this loss is to the carers and to Adine who did such a good job in getting Mopane to the Herd and to being a happy little elephant. Rest In Peace Mopane. You are loved.
Breaks my heart....
Little lammie at the end of this video, looking so lost and confused and wondering what happened to his friend.....I'd love to be able to speak to lammie, understand what's going on in his mind and placate poor little lammie
It's examples like that which make me sad how animals cannot understand spoken words and language from humans. But animals can pick up information in other ways surprisingly well, and in some ways better than we can! There have been numerous instances where animals have known that another animal won't be around much longer, and pay extra attention to that animal for that reason, I've heard stories. Lammie might've even clinged onto Mopane the little elephant an extra amount because she knew he'd be leaving soon. Alot of the elephants there were very friendly and affectionate, yet Lammie the sheep paid special attention to the little phant Mopane
