    Olga Korbuts uneven bars and floor exercise in 1972 are the greatest gymnastics ever seen ..

    Those that weren’t BANNED:
    - belly beat, it just impossible now unless you’re a 6 foot gymnast.
    - Silivas mount, merely lost popularity
    - multiple front handsprings, also lost popularity
    - Comaneci dismount, also lost popularity

    That back flip was badass… and savagely dangerous. Rollouts in particular HAD to be banned- just ask Elena Mukhina. Quad series weren’t banned, they just don’t receive connection bonus so no one does them. A four DIFFERENT skill acro series (Deng Linlin in 2012) do still receive bonus. Belly beats aren’t banned, the bars are just farther apart making them impossible to do. The Sillivas mount wasn’t banned either, it’s just no one does it anymore because it’s not valuable. The Comaneci dismount isn’t banned, it’s just that it isn’t possible with the bars farther apart. Front tumbling is still allowed, it’s just no one is doing it currently.

    Korbut and Comaneci were the greatest so PLEASE do not devalue the difficulty of their flips on the uneven balance beam/uneven bars nor floor routines. What a disgrace. SERIOUSLY? I would love to see some of these back in the routines to see if today's gymnasts could handle it which I'm sure some could. Give them credit where credit's due. Gymnasts are just that. Not runners. Today's routines look so mechanical.

  • @ladycplum

    It's easy to see why the Thomas Salto was banned. You're basically spinning in the air and expected to land in a perfect forward roll. But one wrong move, and you land on your neck, you could snap it and be paralyzed like Yelena Mukhina.

    • @charlessmith263
      @charlessmith263 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      The reason the Korbut flip was verboten - the bar could break or detach due to the heavy weight by the gymnast - and if the bar breaks at the time the gymnast does the backflip to finish off the Korbut - the gymnast could end up like Mukhina - landing hard on one's neck as the gymnast slams hard on the mat ground on impact, shattering it (the C1-C3 spine especially), and end up quadraplegic.

    • @charlessmith263
      @charlessmith263 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      This alludes to what happened to Maggie Fitzgerald in the movie "Million Dollar Baby" who broke her cervical spine after falling down and hitting a wooden chair - although she was a boxer (not a gymnast), and ended up bedridden for life. Being paralyzed for doing risky gymnastics in competition may not be worth the physical spectacle here.

    You don't pronounce Silivas her name correctly. It's not Saliva pronounced. Just because there are three syllable in a word it doesn't mean you pronounce it as in kite with a long I sound. Her name is Daniela Silivas pronounces with a short ''I''' Example: win, spin, twin, chin, bin, skin, thin, fin. and not with long American I. It's not ''Ai'' pronunciation like in kite, bike, pine, invite, wise.glide, prize.Many blessings!

      Few skills have been banned, and those only for a question of security (of those shown here, only the rollouts and the Korbut flip).
      Belly beats are simply no more physically possible, due to the bars being too distant.
      The others are no more executed because they are not rewarded enough and, since the number of elements you can put into an exercise is limited, athletes prefer to concentrate on more rewarding ones.

    The Korbut flip is what makes Ms Olga Korbut a LEGENDARY gymnast. I saw it performed for the 1st time in 2024 and her routine was the BEST I'd ever seen. Should have been judged with a perfect 10. I saw Nadia (Romania gymnast from 1976) perform and although she was also excellent. I felt her routine was no better than Korbut and she earned a 10. They were BOTH 10s and only discrimination if you thought one was better than the other.

    Absolutly right! I agree with some comments below regarding to boring and devalue the greatests gymmnastics moves. In those days it was more important to performe a good quality of skills and competition, and it was really delightful to watch those slim girls. Today it is more important how many medals you can get in not so skillful moves. Even the leotards have changed showing more skin that it gives the nerves to some possible malfunctioning oops. I am aware of the gymmnastics' savety but there must have some difficulty or complexity levels to worth watching, otherwise , the competition gets boring.

    Gone are the days of Olga and Nadia (Olga was always my absolute favourite). I didn't even watch one gymnastics event as the last few Olympics it just looks nothing like it once did. You not only had to be graceful and powerful but many had their own specific move which made them all individual. Now it's just strength moves and there's absolutely nothing artistic involved. It's not pretty. It's not graceful. There's no wow factor anymore. It's just doing the required moves and sticking landings. That's it. Plus the mats are like ten times bouncier now so it wasn't like Olga and Nadia had that in their day. Heaven knows how incredible those performances would have been. The same has been creeping into men's ice skating as well. Everyone has to do a quadruple. No one is wowing anyone anymore like Evgeni Plushenko (who was always my absolute favourite). They took the style out and put jumps in and if you can't do a certain one you aren't going to get the gold...but they sacrificed beauty and elements of "wow" for technical dominance. The last I saw was Yuzuru Hanyu who combined the two but was heavily into style. Sadly, that is a rarity nowadays.

      Who's score was low this time? As a seasoned Olympic Games gymnastics watcher myself (actually paying attention when Nadia, Nelly, and Olga scrapped it out in 76) I thought this was a good compilation. Very, very close!! Japan edged China out by a low score on a poor dismount by Xiao Ruoteng. Ukraine and GB also fielded excellent teams. I dont think team USA was robbed. On the contrary, they did great in a tough competition.

    The uneven bars are to show upper body strength. You can’t put your feet on the bars.

    ALL THOSE GYMNAST WERE DOPING BACK THEN,They didn't have the technology to detect the drugs like they do now,most of them told the truth later in life! Same thing in most all the sports back in the day!!

    I loved watching Olga compete but I never liked the flip. It disrupts the fluency of the routine.
