    • @ChineseHerbalPantry
      @ChineseHerbalPantry  28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @Christinechow, my pleasure! Yeah adding seasoning at the beginning will make the soup taste better! However, usually I prefer to add it at the end, as I find it easier to adjust the level of seasoning after all the flavours of the herbs released, especially for beginner or new to a particular recipe. If newcomer, they won't know what the herbs actually taste like, adding the seasoning at the start may make it too salty or otherwise. It is nice to know how the herbs taste before all flavouring, it is learning process to learn the quality of the herbs before adding too much flavouring!

    Great video and so systematically edited! Would love if you added the cost of some these ingredients as well just to see how affordable it is to cook these recipes.

    • @ChineseHerbalPantry
      @ChineseHerbalPantry  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @light ride, I am very glad to hear you enjoyed watching this video. Thanks for your suggestion too. Chinese herbs pricing is vastly different in different countries. For example, I can buy Chinese herbs much cheaper in Malaysia compare to Australia. Many factors affect it, such as shipping,, regulatory, labour, quality/grades of the herbs, packaging, sizes of orders etc . The changes of seasons, supply/demand also greatly affect the cost of the ingredients. . So, if I add the costs of these ingredients on my video, they can be misleading for others depending on the locations of the viewers. I think the best way if to shop at your local Chinese herbal stores and Asian grocery to check out your local costs to cook these recipes. Hope the above help and hope you have fun learning, shopping and learning!

    What is the scientific name for the Glehnia root? I found everything you listed but not that herb?
    Even so, I went ahead and made the soup. The curiosity was killing me. It was delicious. The fungi tasted like an egg noodle!
    I don't know if this was okay, but I added 3 pre-boiled eggs at the last 15minuts of cooking and just half a tablespoon of low salt chicken broth seasoning for added flavor. It's funny how your body reacts to food and vitamins it likes and needs. I could feel how happy my body felt eating this soup. Can't wait to do the soup again when I can find the last herb.

    • @ChineseHerbalPantry
      @ChineseHerbalPantry  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @Bailey, so sorry for the late reply! Firstly, the scientific name for the Glehnia root is simply Radix Glehniae. It is quite a common herb that I think you should be able to find at the Chinese herb section in any Asian grocery shop. Or if you have trouble finding it in a grocery shop, please look for a Chinese herbal shop (hopefully you will find one in Chinatown), and tell them you want Sha Shen (沙参) (please copy and paste this Chinese name and print it in a paper and show them). You should be able to find it!
      Secondly, I am so so happy to hear that you are trying this soup and that you love it and find it delicious! 😊👏 Ha I love the white fungus too! Yes, you can add boiled eggs and the extra flavour of chicken broth seasoning. Yeah, I know hey. When you are eating the food that is right for your own body type, your body can feel it! Wishing you good health and I will see you at my next video 😘

    Thank you for the recipe. Do we need to use chicken ? for vegan people do you have a substitute for chicken? Is it mainly for the flavor?

    • @ChineseHerbalPantry
      @ChineseHerbalPantry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Margarita, no, you don't have to use chicken. Chicken has its function there but also for flavour. You can substitute with vegetables. Depending if you want to move the recipe to more cooling or more balanced. Chicken is warming here, other herbs slightly cooling, so this recipe is kind of 'balanced'. If you want it to be more cooling, then add vegetables that are more cooling, such as celery, radish or just neutral, such as potatoes. If you want it to be a little balanced, you can add vegetables that are more warming. onions. Frankly, while me being a trained herbalist, I am very particular as this is my job 🤣. And that is also why I created an online course to teach people who want to learn who to create simple recipes specifically for themselves. But for very general use, ,you can just mix and match some vegetables! It may not matter that much!

    Dr. Shirley, does the recipe work if you don't use the chicken? I am a vegan and many of your soups use meats. Or is there a possibility to substitute black soy beans?

    • @ChineseHerbalPantry
      @ChineseHerbalPantry  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Laura, yes you don't have to use the meat in this soup, and substitute it with black soybeans is a great idea 😊 Yeah, traditionally, we do use meats in our soups. You can use the same recipes and omit the meat. The herbs will still work. Meat is there to give more flavour and substance (such as protein). Sometimes we do use it to give certain property or enhance property of the herbs, yet it is totally fine not to use the meat. 😊 Hope this helps!

      @Theresia, yes you can make the chicken soup without the Sha Shen and Yu Zhu. However, these two are the Yin tonics to help to relieve the dryness. So, if you only use white fungus, goji and red dates, the functions of the soup is a lot less than my recipe. Yet it would still help as white fungus and goji are yin tonics too, just not as good. Hope this helps!

      Hi @Angela, this soup should be ok for pregnancy if your pregnancy is healthy and without complication. I am trying to be extremely cautious as I have no idea about your overall health. If in doubt, please check with your local qualified Chinese Medicine practitioner.

    • @ChineseHerbalPantry
      @ChineseHerbalPantry  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @Meg, yeah you can drink this during winter too. Having said that, this soup is slightly cooling. So, if you generally feel very affected by coldness, add more ginger, and red dates to this soup. And don't think too often, drink it when you feel the dryness. Check out my video about winter food recommendations, ( th-cam.com/video/UDZBM9XIisA/w-d-xo.html&t ) and have a good balance of those foods too.

    What would go well with this soup? What kind of Vegetables or breads or rice? 🤔

    • @ChineseHerbalPantry
      @ChineseHerbalPantry  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HI @Zinnie988 , for me, any kind of vegetables is fine. For Chinese herbal soup, I usually eat it with rice, not breads. Just my tradition as the soup is clear and not strong flavour like western soup. I find it go better with rice. Usually in Asian cuisine, we will have one soup, one meat dish and one vegetable dish to eat with rice. 😊

    • @ChineseHerbalPantry
      @ChineseHerbalPantry  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @elizabeth, sorry I can't give personal health advice or soup recipe for personal health issue here. A quick answer is, sinus is usually a chronic issue, so I think it is best to be checked by a doctor, especially with children. I don't think there is any soup that will be able to relieve sinus effectively. Herbal soup is mostly for general wellbeing but sinus will need more active treatment by a qualified Chinese medicine practitioner to see the effects. Take care and hope you will find a good Chinese Medicine practitioner to help your child's sinus.
