Fluke Fishing in Raritan Bay, NJ (Sandy Hook)

  • Today we're out in the beautiful state of New Jersey. Even though we left our boat behind, we are not boatless as we're fishing with Captain Art of Katie James Sport Fishing out in the windy waters.
    Rigged up with Cattail sinkers and cut bait on Viper Spoon, we drift along the water bottom bouncing for fluke. It was a windy and slightly rainy day, though that didn't stop any of us from landing our fair share of keeper fluke.
    Due to the cloudy weather and darker stained water, we were running the gold Viper Spoons, as gold tends to have a better shine in darker waters than silver.
    The Cattail Sinkers really helped keep our lines from getting snagged up on any rocky debris on the bottom.
    Big special thanks to:

    I was happy to see the t-turn and viper spoons on sale in Brielle, NJ(Reel ? bait and tackle. don't remember the exact name of the shop as I was on my way to another and this was closer). I had already purchased the t-turns online from you guys over the winter. Going on a party boat out of Sandy Hook area on Thursday so I might go get a viper.

    Hi ivo, a question I want to ask is whether the cat tail sinker is good for shore fishing in rocky areas. I find the only thing worse than going fishing and not catching anything is getting in to a lot of snags. The thundermist website says it is for trolling or drifting so I wasn't sure if It would work well for shore fishing or not. As an alternative do you think a sliding sinker would also help in avoiding snags. I usually use a big split shot or tear drop sinker when i fish which are both get in to a lot of snags. Particularly the split shot gets me in to snags like every five minutes. Thanks in advance from Peterborough Ontario.

    • @thundermistlures
      @thundermistlures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Scott - the cattail sinkers are designed to fish from a boat....they could be used on shore if you were on a pier but otherwise, they are not really designed to fish from shore :)

    Hi Ivo, from southern NJ, just started watching your videos and I love all the helpful hints! After watching some videos, would like to try the pyton darter for some fluke and striper fishing. I bought the 1 oz for stripers, what size would you reccomend for fluke? Thanks!

    • @thundermistlures
      @thundermistlures  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great to hear from you in Southern Jersey ...the 1 oz will also catch you fluke and is a good size, as is the 3/4 oz - however, we prefer to use the SS20 Viper Spoons for Fluke...they are much lighter and are fantastic on the drift :) Either way though, you're in for some great fishing!

    I actually released a few keepers that measured just over 18" last weekend.
    Really can't quite explain why.
    Even the seagulls were looking at me with this "What the H*** is the matter with you?" look.
    Anyway...enjoyed your video yet again, Ivo.
    I'll be out there again this weekend. Looks like the weather will cooperate.

    Hello Ivo,
    What size Viper Spoon and Cattail were you using? I want to order exactly what you used in the video ( I think you said SS20 and 6oz. cattail in the video). No doubt about their effectiveness...they are great:) I already purchased a few Viper Spoons from you, but I am unsure of when to use which size because if I use too small the hook is buried in the bait too far. Also, I was fishing for fluke yesterday in Brigantine, NJ. Normally a great time, however, yesterday was very troublesome because every time I dropped the line down my Viper Spoon, and along with either my bucktail or bank sinker, came up full of snagged seaweed. Very discouraging and resulted in next to no catches for the day. Do you have any advice when the seaweed conditions get that bad to utilize the tackle- other than call it a day and head in?

    • @thundermistlures
      @thundermistlures  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Forchetti HI Michael - the SS20 Viper spoon is exactly the one we used that day - you will do great with it. We also used the medium size T-Turn and a 6 oz Cattail sinker. The beauty of this rig, is that you can adjust the height - so if you have weeds close to the bottom, just tie on a T-Turn and then go down 4 feet or so to your Sinker - then use a short like such as 1 to 1 1/2 feet to your Viper Spoon. This will keep you out of the weeds and still in the stike zone of any bottom fish :) Good luck out there Michael - you will do great!

    What Rod and Real are you using?
    Thanks

    • @thundermistlures
      @thundermistlures  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kenny Spadaccini Hi Kenny - the rod and reel were Capt'n Art's - I can not recall the brand of the rod, but the reel was a local brand called Canyon Reels and I really liked it a lot. You could always get in touch with Capt'n Art at Katie James Sprotfishing on face book as I'm sure he will be happy to let you know about the rods :) Good luck on the water Kenny :)

    Ivo do you tie your braid directly to the top eye of the t-turn? Or another length of leader to the main line?

    • @thundermistlures
      @thundermistlures  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MIKEDAMIEN3 I like to use a leader line to the T-Turn and then a leader line to my Viper Spoon and sinker as well.....fish can see braid

    • @michaelforchetti1964
      @michaelforchetti1964 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Ivo, could you send a link, post a sketch, or record a video of the best way/knot to tie a leader to the braid, then to the T-Turn? That would be helpful. Perhaps a swivel between the braid and leader is what you would recommend instead? And what lengths? If you could let us know that would be great.

      David Fenton Hi David - there are a number of stores carrying the Viper Spoons in Jersey, but we are not aware of all of them - some are Newark Sinker, Tackle Direct, Fisherman's' headquarters, Ramsey's, Harry's Army & Navy, S Meltzers & Sons, Fisherman's Den, J & H Outlet, and many more - if your local store doesn't carry them, there's always the on line option :)
