Maybe made it better. New and improved, sort of. Thanks for doing this one. If you watch it again, see if you notice exactly when Jonah transitions from Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder.
Did they do it justice? To me, it’s a great re-imagining of this classic tune, something pretty much new. And as I’ve said before, it’s the happiest Thriller out there 🤣
They all switch instruments for the first half of the interlude; from trumpets to flugelhorns, from trombone to double-bell euphonium, and from saxophones to flute and clarinet. Gives it such a nice and smooth sound. And it's not merely swung, they outright changed the time signature from 4/4 to 12/8. Gotta love their own brand of madness when it comes to making covers. 😄 Dirty Loops are from Sweden, and Cory and the horn section from the US. As a matter of fact, when this album was released in 2021, they still had never met in person, due to travel restrictions during the pandemic. They did the whole album, videos and all, with Dirty Loops in Stockholm and Cory and the horns in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Cory has a podcast, and in the episode where he had Henrik as his guest, he talks a bit about how he and Aron (who also does all the video editing for Dirty Loops) planned all the details for the filming, down to which rugs to get and the height of cameras, to get two films that could be edited together to make it seem like they were in the same room. Brilliant, eh?
Wow!!! Thanks so much for the informative comment! Yeah I am really learning to love this band! So much talent! Appreciate you checking out the channel! 😄
One should realise that they're now playing live. The music is actually carefully recorded in studios (Henrik and Jonah usually record their tracks at home). It's then masterfully edited by Simon Petrén, a music producer, mix engineer and master engineer who is educated in London and also holds a Bachelor's degree in film scoring (which shines through a bit in this song). He also plays several instruments and often performs live as the second keyboard player behind Dirty Loops, although he now lives in Korea where he produces (and mixes, and masters) as a consultant for several companies. He's extremely talented and creates that crisp, well-defined sound where you can easily hear each individual instrument throughout. As a side note, as been noted in the comments, the left and right side of the video were recorded separately and then put together. The video editor of all of Dirty Loops' official videos so far is the person behind the drums - Aaron. It's in the credits.
Haha! Well if you aren’t embarrassing your kids then what’s the point?! 🤣 Thanks for letting me know and visiting from across the globe! Have a great one 😁
There's a very nice set (by JammJam) where they perform at the Roskilde festival in Denmark on TH-cam. Elmo Lovano, the founder and CEO of Jammcard, even hits the drums next to Aaron and looks very happy doing so.
@@RobertClaeson yes unfortunately I wasn't there but I've seen them live when they visited my neighborhood in 2014 - and went to Sweden to see them in July this year.
… and to think those two bands weren’t even in the same room, let alone on the same continent when filming and recording this…it’s just nuts! Thanks again, man for a super reaction to these bad dudes. Yes, they’ve taken that epic tune and made it their own, swinging it in 12/8! Jonah’s singing is so on point, and besides having his very own vocal timbre and style of singing, it slots effortlessly into that Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder vibe too…. 😎 Cory’s horns, you might be interested to hear, are in part members of the famous Hornheads, a brass group touring, recording and performing with such greats as MJ, Aretha Franklins, Prince and many others. They often play and tour with Cory now, and are totally worth checking out. Cory himself hangs back a little in this number, as well as in “Follow The Light”. But if you check out “Turbo”, another crazy tune from this album, you’ll see more of his horn section, including a fire solo by Holmen on sax, and bass solo by Henrik, both way out there! Then there is “Ring of Saturn”, their fourth video from this album (they only made videos to four of them, the rest is audio only.) It’s much more chilled and laid back, and has a Latin feel…. The big bad brass instrument which Michael Nelson pulls out in that middle section, is a Double Belled Euphonium, an instrument rarely seen and played these days… and yes, there is this decidedly cinematic vibe in there…. That ‘reverbed’ three every second bar or so, adds a great effect to it, I agree. And Jonah holding that high note for almost friggin six bars, is something 😱 Check out “Turbo” next, along with all the other great Dirty Loops tunes there are. It’s all fire, you can’t go wrong 😉 Also, your stopping and rewinding: I’m there for it, cause I find it interesting to hear what people think and say and hear themselves, especially on a first listen. It’s THE Best! Only: the window featuring yourself within the screen could be a little bigger if you’d ask me. It’s good to see your reaction. Anyways, thanks again ☺️🙏👍
Also, you’ve picked that they repeat or re-use some of the song’s melody in that instrumental transition section - never heard that, and yeah, it’s so true, and genius! Thanks for pointing that out man 👍
If you've ever played brass instruments, you'll appreciate how crazily talented the Hornheads are. It seems so relaxed when they do it, but it's really, really hard.
@@fiddlestix3025 Playing brass instruments is not (only) about blowing lots of air. Hard to explain, but you basically 'fart' with your mouth to create the sounds. Just air itself creates no sound at all. And doing that at such a fact pace, and in such different ways, and with such precision, is very, very hard.
You should check out the next song from this collaboration with Cory Wong, “Turbo”. Also speaking of being in the pocket check out Sarah Jones who is Harry Styles’ drummer. She is amazing -watch his cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” from The Howard Stern show.
Will do! Thanks so much for the suggestion! I think I have heard of Sarah Jones but I’m not very familiar with her. Anika Nilles is another awesome drummer I’ve recently been listening to. Have a great one!
They are three mates from music school, and what a school. The Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm where they studied jazz and musical composition. As classically trained musicians they write and compose a lot of their music - then record the shit out of it.
Hey! Thanks for pointing out that effect on his snare on every other hit. I didn't notice that until you mentioned it. How are you recording your face cam and audio at the same time as streaming your computer screen?
Thanks! Yeah I think it added a lot to the presence of the snare! As far as recording goes, I use a free software program called OBS. It allows you to screen capture what you are watching while simultaneously recording you. It’s a pretty simple interface and there are a lot of tutorials here on TH-cam to help you with the setup. 🤘🏻
In a reaction I watched a few months ago here on TH-cam, a producer had separated Michael Jackson's voice and Jonah's voice and compared the two. Turned out that Jonah was a much better singer than Michael.

I much prefer Dirty Loops' version these days.
That is a double bell Euphonium.
Love your reaction! Thanks for bringing more folks to this incredible band.
Thanks so much! Yeah when it comes to the brass instruments I have very little knowledge. Appreciate you swinging by the channel and sharing!
